This is nice and fast which is good. The downside, however, is that the outer edge of each block is on the bias which is less stable than straight of grain. Pressing must be done very carefully to avoid distortion.

@flanmaryj: You could, BUT if you don't leave that 1/4-inch cleanly on EVERY piece, you'll have big trouble. It's much more precise to rotate the ruler. When using the Double-Strip Ruler, you only have to leave the 1/4-inch once.

oh..one more thing....can this be done with a straight ruler? if so ...how? as funds are really low at the moment but i HAVE to make one of these quilts...also, while i'm here, i always have problems calculating how big i have to make the quilt to end up with a king size, queen etc...i always end up with either single quilts or the ones that sit on top of the bed without the overlap .....any help would be so greatly appreciated

+caroleroberts25, any quarter-square triangle (QST) ruler large enough to cut 4-1/2” strips will work, but I imagine the traditional QST method would make the units as well. A QST ruler really is the best way forward since your units will be more accurate and come together faster. A more economical option would be the 90 Degree QST ruler (www.thequiltpatch.com/90-degree-quarter-square-triangle-ruler-8-inch-finished.html), but we highly recommend the 45 Degree/90 Degree QST/HST ruler (www.thequiltpatch.com/multi-size-45-degree-90-degree-triangle-ruler.html) as it makes super accurate quarter- and half-square triangle units. It's two rulers in one and an excellent value. :)

+caroleroberts25, Kathy can some tips for you: you can make it using the 45-degree lines on straight ruler, but, yikes, that would be hard. A single quarter-square triangle that would work fine. If you need to use a straight ruler, make sure to measure the blocks before cutting the center square. Whatever measurement you get on the QST is the size square you'll need as the center.
The solution for the second issue is to take a tape measure, lay it on the bed in both directions, and build the quilt to that size. Adding blocks or borders is the only way to "grow" the quilt to the correct size. I hope his helps!
