Jennifer Hudson not winning _American Idol_ but two years later goes on to win an Oscar for her first ever film role will always be such a beautiful story of triumph. I would love to see JHud do a TV show (drama) and get more film opportunities. We were this close 🤏 to seeing _Respect_ only for the movie to drop in August.

About the “always 16 to me” part: I agree that was very predator-like from Curtis, but Deena was an adult by that point in the film, because when the movie first started Lorrell and Deena were like in their late teens (as Lorrell was seen whining later on that she was a woman because she had turned 18), but then like 10 years passed when the whole Cleopatra thing came up. So Deena was an adult, but still had no rights so-to-speak. Also at least at one part of the film, CC did send Effie some money years later, but she rejected the money because of the animosity she had towards him (understandably, like what you said in your video). Anyway, really good video. 😊 I enjoyed Dreamgirls a lot when it came out, but I kinda resented it because a friend of the family who frequented my parents house would always ask to watch it, would try to sing the songs but was tone-deaf, and would blast the volume so loud; it was very annoying. Lol I don’t think I would enjoy it as much as I did as a teenager. And yes, most of the characters in this were rotten and Effie was done beyond horribly.

This is a bit long ; The extended cut of this film really helps tie up some ends that the final cut may have left in my opinion. Curtis for certain wanted Deena from the beginning, in one of the cut scenes he seen Deena first, which makes their (Curtis & Deena) duet make more sense “when I first saw you...I said...that’s my dream” he used Effie to get closer to Deena.
I think the plan from the beginning was to give Deena the lead anyway. He had to build Deena up, so later in their marriage it would make it easier to have her dependent on him. Effie was collateral damage, she helped them banish her bc she wasn’t clearly stating what was going on. Even after she left the group she still did shows and it’s suggested that her drinking is what really black balled her. Her and her brother’s (CC) relationship was my favorite dynamic and their making up was my favorite parts of the film.
Curtis was a well written villain, and when you watch it over and over again you can see that him doing Effie wrong wasn’t out of left field at all. He had been slithering since the beginning and telling everyone what they wanted to hear to further his agenda all until it caught up with him. I love Dreamgirls...honestly one of my favorite musicals. It being loosely based on true events only furthers my enjoyment bc it and of course tell all books are as close as we’ll get to old school tea.

In the musical, it’s actually her that gets on CC and tells him that he needs to go back to Effie and make things right with her. She even was able to accept her part in what happened to her and said that even if CC had to break up with her it would be alright because his relationship with his sister was more important than there’s. The scene as a whole takes place in like 45 seconds but I still feel like it was super important and the movie needed that.

I think they did Effie wrong but I do believe that Deena is the reason the trio was able to take off because back then they wanted a certain look. I honestly don't know if the actual group would have taken off the way it did if Effie was in the front. Curtis told us why he chose Deena because she had the look and a voice that was made for pop. The replacement tried to walk away from Effie but she kept coming at her. Effie was entitled to be honest but they all did Effie wrong. Curtis was trash.

This movie hurts my heart. This was based off of the supremes Effies character was inspired by Florence Ballard and Dena was supposed to be Diana Ross. The only difference is that Diana had a child with Barry Gordy and Florence ended up marrying an abusive man (Thomas Chapman, a Motown Records chauffeur) and having three children with him and later died b/c of cardiac arrest when she was 32.

I remember them saying Florence Ballard was r***d around the time the Supremes were taking off. That may have been where many of her 'attitude' problems came from. She never gave a name of who did it, but when you think about Memphis in the 60s, she probably couldn't say anything. Even now, r**e victims are hardly protected. I can only imagine how suffocating it was then with no help or support system.

To be fair though Effie did jump in the new girls face first! Lol All she did was take an opportunity just like she did when she became the secretary! It wasn’t her fault they were letting Effie go so she wasn’t wrong. A check is a check and exposure is exposure and a helluva lot better than being a secretary lol So my point is who wouldn’t. So for Effie to come at her like that when all she tried to do was calm the situation down and remove herself from the hostility and drama I don’t blame her for eating Effie up like she did. Second rate diva was definitely harsh but hey why not especially when Effie basically called her a hoe to get the position. Lol Just saying from her perspective. She thought her voice was amazing that there was no way anybody was seeing her and she could be nasty. And everybody knows just because you talented mean people HAVE TO HAVE YOU. It’s about being a good person and at the end of the day Effie was a diva from day one when she never EARNED that right hence “Second Rate”. In reality they wasn’t that big yet when she left. I don't think its totally fair to call them all gas lighters. i think its far more accurate to say Curtis is an unbelievably charismatic narcissist who's skill with manipulation is unmatched. he's the Master gas lighter and the rest very easily fell into being his tools. i think CC and the rest of them genuinely believe at first that the "Deena in the front" change IS temporary. Curtis is too smart he knew Effie would respond very negatively to the change and used it to his advantage pitting them against each other. is very easy to do this when you hold peoples dreams in your hands. you can see it from the moment he sees Deena for the first time, she's his Obsession, Effie is literally just his way in, he never cared about her ever. its also sooooooo easy on a human psychological level to get very tired of someone always being upset, even when you know why... its very easy to get over having sympathy and to become very jaded by it. the movie and original broadway show move so rapidly through the events of the story its easy to miss that between Deena moving up front and them getting rid of Effie its almost a year of her "causing problems and making scenes" its really easy for someone in Curtis' position to manipulate the circumstances so that everyone "feels they don't have another option" but to replace her. I'm not at all saying what happened to Effie was by any means fair or justified I'm merely saying that i think its unfair to say they all were gaslighting Effie when the group as a whole was Gaslit by Curtis and Effie was really the only one who could see it for what it was...so Curtis had to remove his "problem" luckily for him the others were getting to their own level of being "over it" its very easy for Curtis to use that to accomplish his "end goal" of making Deena the star. also neither the broadway show nor the movie really imply that Deena and Curtis were actually cheating on Effie. there is a whole line of conversation in the Broadway show during "heavy heavy" about how Deena is NOT sleeping with Curtis during all this and it comes from a very genuine place form Deena. we don't even see them married till 5 years later. We see Curtis' desire towards Deena but its very clear that Dina isn't really responding till after Effie is out of the picture. even that small moment during "love you I Do" when their eyes meet during a fitting Deena looks very surprised and taken aback. she's not responding like a lover she's responding like someone who's being looked at like a full grown woman for the first time. however your general rage and feelings about what happened to Effie i can fully relate to i just really place most the blame on Curtis. I don't at all agree with the others but i can understand how they got to their mental place with it all. and i FULLY agree with u on the Lorelle and Jimmy. SERIOUSLY 8 YEARS?!?! GIRL!!!!
