spot on analysis! one thing that wasn't addressed though is how controlling Darnell was with Maya. He controlled her friendships, he controlled when or if at all Maya would go back to college, he tried to control her spending when she treated herself to that $300 dress, then tried to control her trying to correct the situation. and when Maya had had enough and emotionally cheated, Darnell controlled the terms of them getting back together. He high-key was an intolerable, manipulative husband until the last season of the show.
But you know what as true as all of that is,when they were finally getting back together Mya made Darnell realize his controlling ways and then you see in their 2nd stint how much he improved himself
The way Tony cut off Joan permanently was a hard lesson for Joan that sometimes its hard to let go of someone you love but sometimes you just gotta go with your gut and do it...and in hindsight its like peep how easily Tony cut Joan off and never looked back, so now Joan sittin there lost when she shoulda been the one to cut Tony long ago!
She literally let down her childhood friend during the most important time of her life. On her wedding day if she didnt have her fight with Elis (the actor) she wouldn’t even been at Toni’s wedding (wedding she was bitter and jealous of during the months of planning beside being the maid of honor). She was not there during the trial for custody of Toni’s child trial that she was partially responsible for due to her bad mouthing Toni to Todd about how she was not a fit to be a mother because she was judgmental and hypocritical like always.Toni was a great mother yes she made mistakes every parents did and she needed time to adjust plus she was alone Todd didn’t help at all. She was overwhelmed decided to take a nanny and Joan called her unfit for it

She definitely was not a good friend....Joan had her issues and moments but she was literally always supportive of them and caring for them when they needed it and it was hardly ever really reciprocated from her friends, especially not from Toni cause she was too selfish and set in her ways. The one time where Joan had a mess up and couldn't be there for Toni she turns her back on her and it's unforgivable? After a long time of forgiving them for things they did to her and overlooking their actions....like come on. How can you really defend Toni and condemn Joan after what she did....yes Joan messed up but it was very rare that she messed up or was unreliable to them. They knew they could always depend on her and they took advantage of that. And she tried her best to make up for what happened....whenever they messed up they brushed it off or manipulated her into forgiving them. Joan was the glue in the friend group holding them together and taking care of them, but when it was time for them to do so for her they weren't capable and couldn't do it.
Watching this show as an adult vs younger highlighted so many problematic things. All of Joan's friends used her except William who she used to feel better about her break up with Brock. I loved Tonis character as an adult where else can you see a darkskin hypergamous beautiful successful woman in a sitcom? Although Toni was colorist her marriage to Todd was the first interracial relationship on TV. Maya was selfish and ghetto I did not like how unprofessional she was using her friendship to get out of work. Lynn lazy and ungrateful, she lived off of everyone on the show refused to work ran up here parents credit and had parties at Joans house. The last 2 seasons were blah and I hated how they had Joan spiral when she got successful. Btw, Joan's style influenced how I dressed for work and did my hair!

She told Joan to appear In court. Joan went to party. No one wanted her there but she refused to go home. She asked her ex boyfriend played by Wayne brady to drive her home he didn't want to help her. Then another turn of events happened. The problem Joan should've stayed home and go to court on time.

Tony, definitely loved Todd… When he asked, are you marrying me for the money or for me? She said she didn’t care about the money or anything she just wanted him. And he didn’t cheat on her. The show never confirmed it and he denied it multiple times.

Girlfriends is one of my favorites, I binged the whole thing as an adult and still loved it. Still upset it ended the way it did. Maya was my favorite & I lived for her and Darnell’s toxic love story and still crack up at Toni never getting Mayas sons name right over the seasons. I agree with you about the dynamic between Toni and Joan. Toni was the one character that never grew on me chile.

The problem is Tracee doesn't like Joan and she has said she wouldn't want Joan to marry or have a family - essentially making Joan her lived experience being Tracee and not the character development we deserve from Joan the character
Toni was a colorist too. She didn't want to date a man as dark as her. Joan and Toni's friendship ran its course. They was friends the longest like since childhood. Their friendship should have been ended. Joan was so obsessed with getting married and finding a man yet she always picked the wrong men. And she also hated her career. Why did she she even become a lawyer in the first place? Joan should have been an interior designer or an event planner. That would have been more up her alley since she would always put together and host dinner parties with her friends, and she helped William and Maya with their weddings. Joan never had a passion for law compared to William who lived and breathed law. We've never seen her in court. Lynn never had a clear direction of what she wanted to do with her life until she discovered her love for music. She had a million and one degrees yet she didn't want to work. But when she did work, she never had an issue getting a job. That was one thing that I noticed about Lynn.
There's an episode where after they finish painting Maya's new apartment (or Lynn's, I forget), Joan finds her application to a Fashion Design school that Lynn was supposed to have mailed out for her but never did, and Joan flips out on her because she thought the school just didn't want to accept her, which was how she ended up working as a lawyer.

At least they were careful not to play into the colorism that was typical for that time. They didn’t make Lynn the dark skinned character and Toni the light skinned character. I know Lynn was biracial but they didn’t have to write her that way.
I love girlfriends. I remember watching the marathon when it came on tv when I was younger. The thing that bothered me so much was how man obsessed they all were , like everything revolved around having a man or getting a man or being depressed because they didn’t have a man. Especially Joan she was insufferable, she was intelligent, successful, child free but still miserable because she didn’t have a man to share it all with. Like I get wanting a partner and companion but Joan couldn’t and wouldn’t enjoy her life because she wasn’t attached to a man.
Watching this back as an adult I realize something. While Toni was narcissistic and toxic, she was my favorite character lol don't judge me! I just appreciated her confidence and her clear standards. And I appreciate the fact that she was herself on apologetically, no matter how narcissistic or toxic she was everybody knew exactly what to expect from her. Joan on the other hand, her desperation was just very cringy and she clearly had no standards when it came to the men she dated. She would date damn near anybody and she pretty much did lol she was just so desperate for man she just jumped on anything. That whole Brock situation was just ridiculous. How do you leave your boyfriend that you've been dating for months for another man who happens to be his agent and you don't even know anything about him but you're saying you're in love with him? @@tinanana- I feel like you're forgetting all the stuff Toni did to Joan... - blaming her for her bf leaving her even though Toni cheated - trying to sleep with her bf - telling her boss she was dating a sex addict - telling Joan she'd donate jewelery to her charity event when she didn't and act like she didn't understand why the WHOLE group thought she was selfish and self centered - even dating joan ex bf BEFOFE asking Joan if she was cool with it. I feel Toni marring her husband was not all his fault. He wanted to show her that love is better than money. I don't see what he saw because she gave mean T Perry woman character. Toni had money dated dudes with money & she still was not happy. She made the choice to date & marry him he was truthful. Toni finds a reason to mess up stuff. If dude had more money than her she'd do the this is not going to work I am a modern woman & that can not happen you making more than me.
OMG sooooo agree about Todd. I watch those episodes and get so annoyed with him. He knowingly married a woman who wanted a transactional marriage, and got mad/spiteful when he woke up and realized that wasn't what he wanted, then tried to change her, which she actually did do...Todd was the one, at fault, if you ask me.
He actually never lied and that’s addressed in like the beginning of season 4. He didn’t say he was rich… Tony assumed because he was a plastic surgeon that he was.

Toni always knew he wasn’t the level of rich she wanted, she told the ladies Todd was ‘doctor rich’ not rich rich, plus she still stayed with him despite his debt, so she overlooked a lot and broke her own standards to be with Todd from the beginning
I completely agree about the scene with Ellis "Im happy for her!" 😭 Not only because of how well Traci acted it out but also i loved Ellis for being willing to call her out on her bs. Also, not excusing Maya cheating, but i also saw Darnell as controlling and afraid that Maya would outgrow him. Like being mad that she got a brazilian wax?!? Sir lol. He needed her to be dependent on him because he didnt like change and was insecure. Love the show regardless though lol. Great analysis 👍🏾
I didn't think Darnell was that bad, I even understand some of the things he was saying, but I think he was misguided and I didn't like that she wouldn't let her pursue her goals.
Toni and Maya were the funniest to me. Joann, I feel like she was all over the place and a pushover like she was judgemental and understanding at the same time and I feel like she overstepped some boundaries sometimes and she could never be truthful to ALL of her friends. Joann should've never had Toni invite her own ex into her house and should've checked Toni, Joann also had the messiest love life, she did had some nice guys, just to leave for the next best thing and couldn't commit at the time like when she was dating the young guy, but broke up with him because her ex who was a sex addict came back to town and said he engaged to someone else (which he lied about) he just wanted to date around and that's fine, but don't lie about it.
Actually, I don't think he actually was cheating. The flight attendant wanted to be with him, being all flirtatious, feeding him strawberries, but nothing was actually happening. Joan was just speculating.
I still watch this show religiously, Toni was very much trash but I love Jill Marie such a beauty but I was t a fan of how they rushed her and Todd relationship and was high key annoyed they made her grovel for him. Off topic what was the “thing” Sevad had that his ex was telling Lynn about, as much as I watch I still can’t figure that one out?
I don’t know if it was in a Facebook group or on Reddit, but someone basically said Joan was a manipulator. They explained that Joan’s constant enabling and people-pleasing is actually a form of manipulation. I thought that was very interesting and never thought of that.
Just my personal view, but season seven was horrendous and season eight was so awful that only super fans should dare watch it. I didn’t like her and Aaron- wasn’t feeling the chemistry.

Joan dated a 21 year old mail room clerk and dj. Even the group told her she was wasting her time. Joan dated Ellis the expectation of marriage. She dated a sx addict. Joan has looked down on her friends and even her partners. She has verbally said the nastiest things to everyone around her. Sometimes she said it as a joke and sometimes it slipped and dismissed it. Joan felt because she had a good job and living in a good house that she can talk down on her friends. She did favors for people but expected things in return, like that’s not how things work. I need to rewatch this again.

I could not stand Toni or Joan when I watched Girlfriends when it first aired (I’m 31) but I always related to Lynn haha and still kinda do - free spirited, very human, and college educated but not knowing what exactly what I want to do haha
You did an amazing analysis! Girlfriends is my favorite show of all time. So nice to see younger people still into the show. I loved how you analyzed the characters family structure and upbringing, because that is so important into who they are as characters. I never thought about Joan being a product of divorce and seeking the affection of both parents and that’s why she’s a people pleaser -that was awesome. I do think Brock and her were a great match. He was actually my favorite boyfriend. I wanted to know your thoughts about season seven and eight once Toni left. S7 had moments that were still watchable and I think for every fan you should watch season seven of course. Season eight should be set a blaze in a dumpster fire. As a super fan I had to watch it but I will never ever ever watch it again. Their budget was slashed into a quarter of previous seasons. Most of the scenes were filmed in cheap looking sets, and the storyline was weak, and I hated it.

The vibe was toxic. First of all, the relationship between Jones and tony. In real life, Tony would’ve been the friend from college you wanted to forget. It had no redeeming qualities. The whole show just fostered the bad stereotype among black women that they can’t really get along. it was like they were using each other to fulfill a neurosis. Tony’s wedding broke the camels back. The show just always drained my energy. I had to stop watching. I’m glad Tracy Ellis became the one who made it. She knocked it out of the ballpark with blackish.💕

Joan and William dating was a mess but i got what they tried to do because sometimes a guy and girl friend have so much chemistry they think it means its supposed to be a love affair. I didn’t rewatch GF’s on Netflix because I watched the first run. BUT maybe I should because as an adult with some life experience hearing you say “enchanted” is a dog whistle for a particular behavior that I clearly missed as a young adult.
Understood that William n Joan exploring more than a friendship, they started it in season 4 n officially ended it in season 6. I felt it lasted 2 long. As 4 Todd cheating on Toni it seemed 2 be ambiguous 2 me. Todd says he didn't Toni says he did. The police officers names was Yvonne. I feel like Joan and William could’ve worked but Davis would’ve been a good fit for her. I liked Aaron for her though, I feel he grounded her. Toni was a terrible friend and overreacted to cut her off. Lynn would’ve remained friends with Joan cause she mothered her but I think Maya and Joan’s relationship would’ve fizzled.
Brock was my favorite out of her boyfriends. I hated that they wanted different things when it came to having children and actually cried with Joan when their relationship ended. I have always rooted for Joan regardless of anything because out of all the girlfriends, I could relate to her the most. She is the unhealed version of my former self. When the show was on television I was that unhealed emotionally neglected people pleaser with no boundaries. I felt like she was the underdog in the relationship department. Darnell was a controlling BULLY to Maya sometimes. Straight up! I loved Darnell too and in the newer episodes he changed his ways cuz he needed to. But, All Maya had to do was tell Darnell right then and there about Stan. Sh*t would've got real for a minute and Maya deserved to get divorced. She needed to grow up. They both did. They really were the relationship success story of the show though! 🥰🥰🙌🏽🙌🏽 And Lynn pissed me off so much, she would've got cut off 1st and then Toni next! 🤦🏽♀️

For most of the seasons, Toni only cared about buying expensive stuff and making money before getting married and having her daughter. Even Toni told her. " I want a husband, but unlike you, I don't complain about it. " Joan is obsessed getting married. She was frustrated with Lynn because Lynn loves a painting she would go to the museum every day because Sean didn't call her back. And Lynn lashed out. " You always say the guy has a problem. Maybe you have the problem ?" She doesn't want to admit she has a problem. She has a controlling nature in friendships and relationships. She doesn't want to admit it.

On her wedding day if she didnt have her fight with Elis (the actor) she wouldn’t even been at Toni’s wedding (wedding she was bitter and jealous of during the months of planning beside being the maid of honor). She was not there during the trial for custody of Toni’s child trial that she was partially responsible for due to her bad mouthing Toni to Todd about how she was not a fit to be a mother because she was judgmental and hypocritical like always.Toni was a great mother yes she made mistakes every parents did and she needed time to adjust plus she was alone Todd didn’t help at all. Watching this show as an adult vs younger highlighted so many problematic things. All of Joan's friends used her except William who she used to feel better about her break up with Brock. I loved Tonis character as an adult where else can you see a darkskin hypergamous beautiful successful woman in a sitcom? Although Toni was colorist her marriage to Todd was the first interracial relationship on TV. Maya was selfish and ghetto I did not like how unprofessional she was using her friendship to get out of work. Lynn lazy and ungrateful, she lived off of everyone on the show refused to work ran up here parents credit and had parties at Joans house. The last 2 seasons were blah and I hated how they had Joan spiral when she got successful. Btw, Joan's style influenced how I dressed for work and did my hair!

Joan and Toni's friendship ran its course. They was friends the longest like since childhood. Their friendship should have been ended.
Joan was so obsessed with getting married and finding a man yet she always picked the wrong men. And she also hated her career. Why did she she even become a lawyer in the first place? Joan should have been an interior designer or an event planner. That would have been more up her alley since she would always put together and host dinner parties with her friends, and she helped William and Maya with their weddings. Joan never had a passion for law compared to William who lived and breathed law. We've never seen her in court.
Lynn never had a clear direction of what she wanted to do with her life until she discovered her love for music. She had a million and one degrees yet she didn't want to work. But when she did work, she never had an issue getting a job. That was one thing that I noticed about Lynn.
There's an episode where after they finish painting Maya's new apartment (or Lynn's, I forget), Joan finds her application to a Fashion Design school that Lynn was supposed to have mailed out for her but never did, and Joan flips out on her because she thought the school just didn't want to accept her, which was how she ended up working as a lawyer.

It's clear Joan was initially supposed to be the main MAIN character which is why they like to make it seem like she's not really the problem.

At least they were careful not to play into the colorism that was typical for that time. They didn’t make Lynn the dark skinned character and Toni the light skinned character. I know Lynn was biracial but they didn’t have to write her that way.

I love girlfriends. I remember watching the marathon when it came on tv when I was younger. The thing that bothered me so much was how man obsessed they all were , like everything revolved around having a man or getting a man or being depressed because they didn’t have a man. Especially Joan she was insufferable, she was intelligent, successful, child free but still miserable because she didn’t have a man to share it all with. Like I get wanting a partner and companion but Joan couldn’t and wouldn’t enjoy her life because she wasn’t attached to a man.
Watching this back as an adult I realize something. While Toni was narcissistic and toxic, she was my favorite character lol don't judge me! I just appreciated her confidence and her clear standards. And I appreciate the fact that she was herself on apologetically, no matter how narcissistic or toxic she was everybody knew exactly what to expect from her. Joan on the other hand, her desperation was just very cringy and she clearly had no standards when it came to the men she dated. She would date damn near anybody and she pretty much did lol she was just so desperate for man she just jumped on anything. That whole Brock situation was just ridiculous. I completely agree about the scene with Ellis "Im happy for her!" 😭 Not only because of how well Traci acted it out but also i loved Ellis for being willing to call her out on her bs. Also, not excusing Maya cheating, but i also saw Darnell as controlling and afraid that Maya would outgrow him. Like being mad that she got a brazilian wax?!? Sir lol. I didn't think Darnell was that bad, I even understand some of the things he was saying, but I think he was misguided and I didn't like that she wouldn't let her pursue her goals.

Toni and Maya were the funniest to me. Joann, I feel like she was all over the place and a pushover like she was judgemental and understanding at the same time and I feel like she overstepped some boundaries sometimes and she could never be truthful to ALL of her friends. Joann should've never had Toni invite her own ex into her house and should've checked Toni, Joann also had the messiest love life, she did had some nice guys, just to leave for the next best thing and couldn't commit at the time like when she was dating the young guy, but broke up with him because her ex who was a sex addict came back to town and said he engaged to someone else (which he lied about) he just wanted to date around and that's fine, but don't lie about it.

You did an amazing analysis! Girlfriends is my favorite show of all time. So nice to see younger people still into the show. I loved how you analyzed the characters family structure and upbringing, because that is so important into who they are as characters. I never thought about Joan being a product of divorce and seeking the affection of both parents and that’s why she’s a people pleaser -that was awesome. I do think Brock and her were a great match. He was actually my favorite boyfriend. I wanted to know your thoughts about season seven and eight once Toni left. S7 had moments that were still watchable and I think for every fan you should watch season seven of course. Season eight should be set a blaze in a dumpster fire. As a super fan I had to watch it but I will never ever ever watch it again. Their budget was slashed into a quarter of previous seasons. Most of the scenes were filmed in cheap looking sets, and the storyline was weak, and I hated it.

When Joan got popular, Joan went too far. Toni was car jacked with her baby. Joan did not show up as a character witness when Toni almost lost custody of her baby. Joan was a terrible friend. Toni should never let Joan back into her life.

Okay but Joan also has her own life tho. If she wasn’t able to make it (especially seeing the circumstances) then it’s understandable and let’s not forget how Toni has never once shown up for Joan. And the only way Joan got toni to do something was to beg for it. Like how she had to BEG toni for a nice gift for her auction and Toni just played it off. Then Toni had the audacity to be upset w Joan for buying a new car and not being “on time” even though Joan still showed up. Even had the audacity to talk about how Joan got her the car when that wasn’t the case😂. And Joan taking Toni back as a friend doesn’t mean it’s a clean slate bc Joan obviously wanted to work it out but Toni never actually tried. Toni never tried w anything. Joan put in more effort then she needed to when it came to Toni. If it wasn’t for Joan toni probably wouldn’t even have bounced back the way she did. If it wasn’t for Joan toni wouldn’t even have enough money to move to New York (yes she has the Fresno funds BUT even when her car was gonna get repoed she never touched it) showing that she expected someone else to handle it so she doesn’t have to touch her precious money. So as much as you wanna say “Joan was a terrible friend” she wasn’t. Toni did significantly more. And speaking of Jamaica, toni left to go and try to have sex with Joan’s boyfriend but Joan is the bad friend? NO. Joan never tried to hurt toni. Never was it malicious but toni did. Toni did malicious things. So toni was a worse friend than Joan (coming from someone who doesn’t like Joan too much either)

tbh all that past stuff has nothing to do with Morgan. Joan did more than disappoint Toni. By not showing up, she let Morgan down who is just an innocent baby.

I want to say something. Joan doesn't like Marcus because of the wide hips but she can be with Chris even though he gave her x. She can be with Sean, a sx addict, and she can be with Ellis, a struggling actor with a baby mama. ( I almost got kicked out of her friend's wedding, Toni, to start drama on set ), Kenneth, the old man who is older than her mother.
She wasn't dating for the sake of marriage. She didn't want to date a good quality man but men with issues. Maybe she probably doesn't think she deserves a good man or she was desperate.
She almost lost Aaron because he is a high school teacher. She spent too much money on a stove, and she doesn't want to listen to him or anyone. William and Joan were supposed to be the end game. However, Toni character left, so they brought back Monica's character to fill the void.
She is jealous of all of her friends. Maya because she married her high school boyfriend. She is jealous of Lynn because Lynn is single and loves being single. The only men she loved were the singer Finn and the celibate poet. I think. She enjoyed Vosco until she had to care for him. Joan wanted to live vicariously through her because she refused to be happy being alone. For most of the seasons, Toni only cared about buying expensive stuff and making money before getting married and having her daughter. Even Toni told her. " I want a husband, but unlike you, I don't complain about it. "
Joan is obsessed getting married. She was frustrated with Lynn because Lynn loves a painting she would go to the museum every day because Sean didn't call her back. And Lynn lashed out. " You always say the guy has a problem. Maybe you have the problem ?" She doesn't want to admit she has a problem. She has a controlling nature in friendships and relationships. She doesn't want to admit it.

Same here. Maya & Toni were my faves and were the best characters on the show. They both had the most growth and became better people. Unlike Joan.
