We had more games with hyper attractive character design like ZZZ and First Descendant than we do games like Concord. Pretending there's a big industry shift towards the bad designs is just pushing a dork ass narrative. More importantly though, Katawa Shoujo, hell yeah.
I think, more than anything else, people are tired of video games like Dustborn lecturing them, and the ugly character designs are just an easy thing to point to and criticize.
