    You can surely grow dahlias in hotter climates and those are good tips. Giving them every advantage to establish and adapt always help. But there’s definitely cool weather in the mountains of Mexico.

    Fantastic video Randi! I had no idea it was our national flower 😆 I’m excited to try them again this coming season! It will be mostly dwarf dahlias from seed (if they actually grow true 😂) because that’s mostly what’s available to me. Will you be growing any from seed next season?

      Yes I will! Growing from seed is fun, so I'll probably try to do a whole tray or something. Dwarf dahlias will look so pretty in your garden! You could even make a border with them.

    Thank you. This is a tremendous resource. Can you suggest some hardy dahlias for So Cal 9b. I’ve had to cover mine so much with shade cloth this past month mine are looking stunted. I’m growing Cafe au Lait. Moonstruck. Fabulous. Raspberry Punch. SunKissed. Ice Tea. What dahlias have thrived for you? TIA.

      Hello! I can't speak specifically for zone 9, but some really strong growers for me have been 'night silence,' 'diva,' 'enchantress,' and there's a red anemone-type dahlia that was so amazing for me but I lost the name and then it fried last year (my mistake). Cafe au lait grew to be incredible for me. It got better and stronger every year it stayed in my garden. 'Bacardi' was super vigorous for me but it presented as pure pink....so I'm not sure if it was the heat or if I was sent the wrong tuber. Honestly, I haven't added more dahlias to my collection in a while so I've done less trialing. I plan to curate this one bed to hold about a dozen varieties good for zone 10b.....future plans!

      Ooh! so I reached out to a garden friend who loves dahlias in zone 9b, and she said the best performers have been jowey winnie, strawberry cream, crichton honey, alpen cherub, coralie, and golden scepter. There are truly so many varieties so very difficult to get a good comparison. haha

    Does your mom in 10a plant new tubers in fall or spring?

    • @FreckledCalifornian

      In spring! The majority of the ones I plant at her house are my seed-grown dahlias so it's a little different, but any tubers were also planted at the same time. They grow and bloom at the same times my dahlias do, but mine actually appear earlier in spring because my garden climate gets warmer faster.

    Hi, how often you water your dahlia’s in hot climates?

    • @FreckledCalifornian
      @FreckledCalifornian  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! It really depends. Some raised bed soil drains faster than in-ground, some weeks are hotter than others, and when the plants are larger I have to water less because they shade the soil....so I recommend getting to know your garden soil and how long it takes to dry out. Hope that helps!

    Hi lovely dahlias. Is it possible to grow dahlias in tropical climate?

    • @FreckledCalifornian

      I think it depends on the specifics of "tropical" but I know gardeners in Florida, humid parts of Colombia, and Hawaii that do. Sometimes they will struggle more with powdery mildew and diseases that like humidity. You'll never know unless you try! I recommend checking out my dahlia growing articles on the blog too.
