To be honest, we can’t tell you with 100% certainty why the rockers broke/jumped off. We can say that it coincided exactly with 3rd gear failing though. SR20s are well known for the rocker arms being problematic as they are quite heavy and hence their mass/inertia can be an issue at high rpm. Two possible reasons for the failure include the slight over rev which resulted when the gear broke at full throttle/full boost, or potentially the rate of change of rpm when the gear broke.
As I said, we can't tell you exactly what caused the failure to occur. Rate of change of rpm will have an effect on the valve train because the rockers need to deal with the static rpm as well as the acceleration of the valve train as the engine rpm increases. While the ECU has a rpm limit, with a very high rate of change of rpm, we have seen engines pull past the limiter. This is quite common on rotary drag engines where we have seen rpm of 12,000+ with an engine limit set to 10,500.
The rotary engine was just an example - I have seen piston engines pull past a rev limiter too. In the end it shouldn’t have made much difference though. If the engine had seen 8500 or 9000 rpm I would agree that an over rev was the cause. In this case though, 7800 rpm was the max rpm recorded, just 300 rpm over the limit. Nigel’s valve train (with heavy duty springs and rocker stoppers) should have been quite safe there. That is why I said we don’t have a 100% firm conclusion for the failure.
There is nothing wrong with finger-follower valve actuation, but the problem with the SR20 is the way it was applied. More specifically the mass of the rocker is the issue. This just isn’t comparable to an F1 head. :)
Head over to www.engineeredtoslide.com for all the info on this truck. Just note that it's fully tube framed, there isn't much Hilux left under there. - Ben
I have a 1988 toyota hilux and I'm looking at turning it into a drift ute as you know it's leaf sprung should I change it to 4 link? I don't want to go all out like him just want to have fun. Any suggestions on suspension.
Hey Steven Emes I'd go and check out Nigel's website. www.engineeredtoslide.com He was the one who built the ute. We took care of his electronics and engine management :)
High Performance Academy I messaged him a while ago on his site and no reply. Could you maybe get him to contact me. I think I'm getting into to this way more than I should haha. I'm looking at an Ls1 conversion, sequential 6 speed gearbox, hidraulic handbrake, full braided lines all over coil spring front and 4 link rear.
Great Video and Interview. But you could have shown more of the car. It is a bit annoying hearing Nigel talk about the car but not seeing it. Sorry, but the camera angles are terrible.
Found this because of the new video of you both with the S13 NA so young

I own a 92 Toyota short bed pick up I got it lowered but have a few mods left but am keeping the up grade to straight Toyota
love the hilux , keep up the good work! when is HPA doing a technical tour of nigels hair cut.???
If there is it would be hard to find ;)
awsome vid, loved it, subscribed for sure !!!!
Eat that microphone boy
nom nom nom - Taz.
Haha, your right the world needs answers :)
Good day. whats the air lift kit used on this ride?
Oh no my friend. This ute doesn't air ride ;) - Ben
I know its not air suspension..am asking about the lift kit used..what brand.

Yeah it's a real pain!
Those bloody flies!
Hello friend, what motor does he use in the car?
It's a Nissan SR20 :) - Ben

Steven Emes I've emailed it through. But Nigel is a busy man so can't make any promises. :)
Ok mate cheers. I bought an LS1 today and a heap of other goodies.
I have been building mini trucks for a while now. parallel 4 link plus a watts link with coil overs are the way to go for drifting
is there a single stock part on there? haha
that truck is badass I wish I could have seen more of it less talking more pictures
+Vicente Koroneos plenty of photos of it on his website. engineeredtoslide.com/category/ets-drift-ute/
Cool thank you
Builds greatest Hilux of all time..
DOESN'T KNOW ABOUT ROCKER ARM STOPPERS?!?
There is rocker stoppers on it man..
What the hell is that hair cut?
No idea mate, we were there for the cars 😎 - Taz.

+Versatzgetriebe Check out Nigels website. engineeredtoslide.com/category/ets-drift-ute/ He has extreme detail on all areas of the car.
+High Performance Academy Thanks a lot! I appreciate it!
Shouldve done a 720 or 620 datsun keep it nissan
Thanks for watching Alina Rodriguez maybe you could build one, then you can have it exactly like you want :) I know Nigel loves his Hilux :)
+Alina Rodriguez hahaha pwnd
