Great video! I'm happy to see that someone has the stones to call em like they are, and tell them (like it or not) why. I doubt if there are many DIY'rs interested in bi-directional scan tools, but the guys just starting out should listen-up: you will save money with the Chinese machines, but when you have a service rider breathing down your neck, and you're working on a bad ticket that doesn't pay the time, you just don't have the time for a scan tool "learning experience". I think you're the first TH-cam guy to honestly explain what to expect from these tools. Well done!
Good video! I got the Maximus 2.0 myself, Im a young tech but work hard educating myself all the time. It has been a great tool for me, so much so that my boss actually often comes and borrows my scanner when he needs one vs going for his snap on. Its menus make more sense when you get used to them and know what to expect, I tell you what though first time I pulled up a Volvo it took me a few minutes to figure out where everything was!
I agree the Snap on is a go too, quick and easy.....even for a experienced tech. it's a time saver. The Autel and Launch do a TON for their price point but like you mentioned if you are not used to them or are not experienced enough, they can send you down the rabbit hole pretty quickly. I've seen guys make wrong diagnosis, or reset adaptives and wind up in trouble. That is when live scope data or numerous scan tools come into play.
Nice coverage of the scanners. I've owed, played with and used most of the scanners you have in the line up. Each one has it's pros and cons. Thanks for the video
I've worked with both Snapon and Autel scan tools and I have to say I warmed up to the Snapon pretty quickly. Once you start playing around with it and learn its functionality, the ease of use is amazing. If I had to buy anything from Snapon it would be one of their scan tools. Loved the vid, very informative.
I purchased a Matco/Launch scan tool for my personal tool. The philosophy I applied was buying what I needed and compensating for what the Snap-On verus lacked in capabilities.
On the snapon scanner... When you go from the modis to a verus or zeus you also go to windows based system. Which is a lot faster and I can use my scope while using my scanner which is really useful if i want to activate something via my scanner while viewing scope.
I bought my first scan tool this year, a used solus pro for $400 from my Snap on dealer it was updated to 14.4, the following week he had a solus ultra used for $1800 updated to 17.4, gave me the $400 back for the pro(should have kept it for home) love that scan tool, found out last Friday it will program keys in a Honda odssey. It's probably one of my best purchases since I started as a mechanic, just my opinion. Buy used when you can it'll save you a few bucks, I would like to try the Autel someday though!
I am a tech who now flips cars. I am about to buy scanners. Tell me what you think. I am leaning towards a used snap-on verus edge with current update and every upgrade you can do to them. Ram etc. it’s 1400 with everything plugs dock etc. And also Buy a New Launch X431 Pro3 ACE global version for $860. I wanted the launch USA torque link but it’s $1700 for basically same tool. I can add the link to the ACE later. I feel I can cover everything well. What are your inputs.
Our shop has an encore, modis edge, launch, Mac mdt 10, and an Autel. I personally like the autel the best. Once you get used to where to find what your looking for on each make, its a great tool. One thing I will say though is the tool seems to be a bit more fragile than others. We had had to send it in twice. Once for the screen, then again because with no comm with lexus and toyota.
Great run through of the different scan tools, very informative👍. I have the Autel ms906 and it can be frustrating at times but it is a great tool for the value for money
I recently got the Zurich from harbor Freight Been kinda impressed definitely for more advanced users. Don’t like doesn’t have a fracture for quick oil light resets
Have been thinking about the Zurich because of the price. I am just a shade tree mechanic and not a professional tech. After using the Zurich, do you like it? Do you still use it or have you gotten rid of it?
This video was 4 years ago can you please do another one current. . By the way I live outside of Atlanta. I was recommended to watch your videos as well as dinner scanner and two others. Hey kind of sort of told me. To watch all of y'all's videos and when I got done with all of y'all's videos especially Danner scanner to give him a call back and he would come out again. But he would come back at any time I needed him
Thanks for the video. I'm totally new to these tools. I need one just about exclusively for fuel system diagnostics for early 2000's Ford, GMC and dodge 3500's. It would be nice to have wiring diagrams also. Would you recommend one for these limited purposes??
Great video thanks brother. That's a lot of scan tools and a lot of money. I can't believe the price of the updates. I guess if you do enough it's worth it but dang it man. Keep up the great work see you in the next video thanks again brother
Absolutely I work for ford and was use factory scan tools of course for our line bit our snap on we have is very unimpressive I actually use my autel for all my diagnostics outside of our factory line and I'm an import guy but trying to do things with snap on is just a pain when u realize its not supported
Good video! New subscriber here. Love your channel. I’ve heard you talk in a couple of your videos about not upgrading to the snap on Zeus and maybe some dislike of the Zeus. I was just curious what you don’t like about the Zeus. If you have a video about that I didn’t see it yet. I was thinking about buying the new Zeus plus Wanting to get into using a scope and I know the snap on has a lot of useful information built into the tool that would be helpful. I also thought about getting the pico as well because the scope is what I’m mainly interested in. Any advice would be appreciated.
Have you had any experience with the Innova tablet scan tools?. I am a diyer wanting to get more into obd2 diagnosis and was wondering about the inovva sds tech 50. Any recomendations would be greatly appreciated on this or other scanners for the home mechanic.
Very nice video. I definitely have to agree with the Chinese tools. We have two Autels and going from a Chevy to a bmw can be hard if you dont know the nomenclature. Trying to read simple things like fuel trims or watching oxygen sensor wave forms on the scanner if you don't have much experience with it. Would love to hear your opinion on the new Bosch ads625 compared to these scanners.
I have a Verus edge. I do like it, but it cannot do everything for the money. It definitely makes me regret purchasing it sometimes. If I had to do it all over again I’d stick to Mongoose factory cables and buy a Picoscope. If you don’t have a scanner yet, and you’re working on only a few different makes all day, buy the Mongoose cables and the licensing for the factory software. You can buy the Mongoose cable for Toyota for under $500, and Techstream subscriptions are around $1400 a year with TIS access. That’s the cost of two updates on the Verus. On top of that, a four channel Pico with the majority of tooling you’ll use day to day is under $2500. The cost of a laptop isn’t much these days either. Just saying...
Hey can you hit me up I work for ford but have a toyota dealerhship over state lines that we see I'm trying to decide to upgrade to a higher end autel or do something like this mongoose but idk anything about it. I usually work on ford but any imports I get so if I can cross to hyundai, kia, Honda toyota that would help if you could give more information
R230Tuner, not many shops or techs can afford to work on all makes and models nowadays though. It makes more sense to specialize in what you’re seeing all day than to try and cover everything. If you’re seeing mostly Asian vehicles, for example, this may be a better route to go. Not only are you able to use the factory scan tool completely, but you’re also able to flash update and reprogram without the add on expenses of the Snap On J box. Snap On’s updates every year would cover at least one manufacturer subscription, add on the $8k-$10k cost of the Verus and you’d be more capable and further ahead working on 4-5 different Asian car makes than putting all your ducks into one scan tool. Just my opinion. Thanks for the comment!
I use the Mac MDt 10 aka Bosch. 600 a year to keep updated, but keeps the warranty going. Has built in wiring diagrams. Still need a scope. Can program through the VCI. Still need a pica scope
Ive been looking into the possibility of getting a better scan tool soon. The autel line has options like the maxicom starting at $500 on amazon. I dont do much diag work since switching jobs and the shop has a ms908bt i believe. The lower end in the maxicom is not bidirectional but i did see a video where on the guys vehicle he was able to power the fan on and off. Im between the mk808ts for 700 (wireless bluetooth and built in tpms tool) or a bidirectional ds808 for 800 or the mp808ts for 1000 (prime version of the ms906ts). Idk yet but we will see when that time comes. Thanks for the info FRM.
Just left dealership for independent world a couple months ago im seeing alot more European diagnostic work what training or seminars would ypu suggest to get me proficient in euro diagnostics
I've had an Encore for 3 years and had good luck with it. I have noticed that with the latest updates (this year) it has sped up considerably. That being said, usually a couple times a month I have to send in a field report on missing PIDS or some other kind of tomfoolery. Bosch (née OTC) usually gets back to me on my issues. Certainly not the best, but for the price it's hard to beat.
Hi Everyone, if there is any technician that knows about SnapOn ethos pro scanners could you please answer me this question. Will a Snap On Ethos Pro scanner function perfectly fine without updating from now on at the older software version level it is currently at, or do they become "bricked" and useless at some point? I have the opportunity to purchase an older one in nice shape and it hasn't been updated in several years, I think the software version is 18 something. This is just for my personal use on my own vehicles.
Look at something that runs with a J-box. The ~$2500 autel comes with a J-box, you'll have to buy which ever manufactures online setup for the car you are working on.
That one cut seemed like “Geno” from the Snap On mafia showed up. Was half expecting the next scene to be you with your arm in a sling singing the praises of Snap On. 😂😅😂
Snap-on scan tools are like Apple products. Nicely put together, easy to use, somewhat behind the technology curve, and waaaaay overpriced. The Chinese tools are like Android. If you don't know what you're doing, you can brick a module. They are more difficult to use, but the price and power is worth it. Great video!!
Great video, big help. A few years ago when I first got into diagnosing I borrowed a buddy’s snap on scanner and I noticed it showed as a note what a normal range should be. Very cool feature considering I wasn’t exactly sure what would be considered normal. I’m trying to buy my own now, but more than likely going for a cheaper Autel MS906ts. I figure it’s not as powerful as a MS908P or the elite where I can do reflashes and all but it would be just powerful enough to do the things I need to test and diagnose. Any way you could get your hands on one?
I really miss Clymer and Haynes manuals. Direct, informative and cheap. Trusting my life to a computer doesn't make sense. I'm on my 8th PC due to failures.
I would love to see n I depth look at the autel. Like graphing recording and pid refresh rate compared to the snap on. Also would like to see how well activation test work compared too since autel is a tool I'm looking at purchasing in 2019
phillip zanders glitches constantly on pids, no where near real time same with Matco scanner. All really depends on what your gonna do with them. Identifix is expensive too Snapon’s guides component testing is built in and has a scope. Amp probe and multimeter capabilities as well. Autel and Matco has to have scope capability but perchased separately. Matco’s is like 2000 or something extra so it’s not worth it to go that route to me. My 2 cents as I use them
Thanks for the video!!!! I own a autel ms908pro and it's been really good for programming pcms, keys on Ford's and Honda's. Besides having it repaired twice it's been a good tool. The first time I sent it out for repairs was when the hardware crashed and was unable to boot up, second time was when the screen would go black unless I had power hooked up to it. I purchased battery's from Amazon and installed them myself because the warranty expired . Now the unit is working properly again. Its currently updated to 2014. But I hear that I might loose some of the special fucntions if update. Are you still able to program pcms with the latest update?
Be nice if wage increases for serious technicians kept up with price increases on diagnostic tools. I have a Launch that purchased new for about $2100.
@@colemanbonner No they haven’t. I’ve talked with numerous technicians from union shops that actually moved down South to non union shops because their wages could not keep up with the cost of living where they were.
My snappy driver said regular price on the Solus edge was 4 grand i could have it for 2 grand on special. Im not in the auto repair business so doesn't make sense to spend that kinda money, even tho at half price
The one I used very well could've just been to abused by the shop I worked at seemed like they didn't much take care of it. So yeah I didn't last there to long before I left to a better shop lol
I love the Autel line. It has simple and cheap devises that are meant for service of the car. To like programming a module when installing a new one. I have MS906TS, and find it user friendly. Had a Launch, but did not like it
Chrysler cars 2018+ right now you have no choice but to buy the WiTech from them because of the Security Gateway Module. Total PITA, I hear GM is going this route too.
Willy Queen With the way it’s heading currently, It is gonna be a matter of time only before it gets too complicated that a dedicated auto programmer is needed to deal with computer related faults in a modern vehicle. It’s like doctors, a few centuries ago, there was less of a handful of medical specialties, nowadays, there are subspecialties and it’s becoming more and more branching out. One day, auto technician won’t be able to handle the so complicated computers doing a lot of stuff in the car specially when autonomous driving eventually becomes a reality.
Well Tesla is able to push updates over wifi so my guess is down the road someone will schedule an appointment and the diagnosis for most issues will be done before the customer shows up. I don't think so much an actual programmer as in someone who know C will be needed but a few guys that do software (diag/updates) only and some part swappers.
Sorry flat rate master but im gonna have to disagree. I have used all of these scan tools. Comparing the processing speed to the verus and Chinese tools are no contest. I have had nothing but problems with the matco tool and maxisys tool. My verus pro with ssd has blown away all the other tools. I would like expansion on your experience.
Autel is so powerful pretty much because they literally pirate/ copy the orginal mfg software and make it in a android format. I have mercedes Star diagnosis and I compared it to autel and they are almost identical as if they copied the software. Just a few left out menus.
Mike whats your desert island scan tool, assuming you have no internet access in any form and you do 40% American, 40% Asian and 20% Euro, nothin but diag, what's your go to tool, I know what mine is
@@flatratemaster you must not realize all the verus has to offer. Snapon troubleshooter is kinda like a built in identifix with no internet required, the component test section has connector views with specified voltages , then there's the 4 channel scope thats works awesome
@@BobbyCulpepper.srv3fender i have used snap on since the red brick, so yes i know all about that, you said scan tool, you didn't say i couldn't bring my pico😉
The Pico is not built into the autel, but i wiould assume you had the scope module with the maxisys... snapon even has specs like firing order and cylinder layouts, spark gaps. I guess you have gotten really lucky using the autel. I'd say take this challenge.... next ten diags use only the autel. If you have to switch tools its fails the test. Then the 10 diags after that use only the snapon. If you have to switch tools then it fails the test. Also take note of the time it takes to get to a diagnosis.
The big thing is that Autel USA and Launch USA are not the same as with their Chinese counterparts. So you have to buy them from the correct source. I like the Autel. The US service number works. If you order one from Amazon they'll send you a Chinese market one. You don't want it. Best to contact Autel USA direct to see how to buy.
I have an Autel MX808 i use for home side work. For ~$350 it's great. Does electric rear brakes on every car i've tried, resets oil/service stuff etc. Doesn't do much service functions or coding of course. I'm looking at buying a higher end Autel is that shows how much I like it. Should have bought the ~$1200 to begin with.
@@flatratemaster . No worries Mike , I'm trying to find something to keep at home to do idle relearns after a throttle body clean and automated brake bleed activation .
Yep..I use the Matco/Launch for PrePost....all ya need is a 50 dollar wireless printer...then download a printing app and sync them. Makes a nice little report telling you codes and all modules scanned.
I am looking into adding a Snappy ApolloD8 to the diag drawer....or maybe even a Zeus if they c ok me out with some rebates or price breaks as I dont need a lot of the bells and whistles for the collision side.
Those are all made in China boss... Snappy and otc software is probably written by someone with an English native language. Other two tools that is not the case... But they are all manufactured overseas.
launch x431 diagun . autel ms 906ts . hantek 1008c . aes wave u scope . i can with these tools fix 95 % of all cars on the road to day . for under 2500 hundred dollars
Are you a professional tech? I am just a shade tree mechanic and am thinking of buying the Zurich. After a month of using it , do you still like it. I am not worried about updates because I only drive older vehicles. Do you think it would be ok in my situation or should I look at the autel 906?
I hate how the Chinese tools list mass air flow pids in lb/s . You have to raise the rpm to 1200 before you even see a change.. it should be grams not pounds
Parameter IDs, looking at live data, say you pull up bank 1 sensor 1 O2 sensor and it shows it moving from .100 mv to .800mvs that data line is called a PID

My 2 cents as I use them
Can I use for diesel engine and gasoline your scanned tools
Newbie question... how old of vehicles do these work on?
Launch X431 pro mini best scantool for Asian vehicles.
Recommend
My biggest issue with Snap on is exotic support is non-existent and they are 2 years behind on some manufactures especially Chrysler
Not quite there yet as far as buying one but good information
I can't say on that as I have not tried to do any programming with it as of yet
Autel's return on investment is tough to beat.
Where do you get all these scan tools?
The u scope seems to be good as a single channel alternative but not comparable to a pico
Do vous absolutely need to update them or they block it? i only work on older models 2008 and lower
No, none of the tools i talked about will lock out without updates
Be nice if wage increases for serious technicians kept up with price increases on diagnostic tools. I have a Launch that purchased new for about $2100.
They have kept up in unionized shops.
Wtf 4,000 what are they smoking???!!!
I’m not covering the Zeus, it’s stupid. Ook great job!
Check the Zurich out that's available at harbor freight
I've had experience with the otc and didn't seem to reliable to me but I love my snap on modis edge
I have had zero issues with mine and if it has a function everytime it has worked
The one I used very well could've just been to abused by the shop I worked at seemed like they didn't much take care of it. So yeah I didn't last there to long before I left to a better shop lol
What is the cost update the Bosch yearly ?
I love the Autel line. It has simple and cheap devises that are meant for service of the car. To like programming a module when installing a new one. I have MS906TS, and find it user friendly. Had a Launch, but did not like it
which scan tools work for hybrid batterie systems?
@13:33 what happened? That look you gave was very concerned lol. That aside, great video!
Chrysler cars 2018+ right now you have no choice but to buy the WiTech from them because of the Security Gateway Module. Total PITA, I hear GM is going this route too.
Chryslers diagnostic software always has been better than there vehicles
@@dayanordonez6876 hahaha true bro
What are you thoughts on dealer level programs? I have the Ford IDS loaded on my laptop.
OEM is the best option always. And i love IDS😉
Did you do it yourself?
Who is the top dog for European vehicles?
dayan ordonez Launch
Autologic for sure but quite expensive
Autologic for European
Autologic.
Top Dog is Autologic for sure, but in this list Autel or Launch, defiantly not Snap On
Updates for the solus edge are 550 not 800 for the loyalty price then non loyalty is 1000 then subscription options
What does a technician and a lesbian have in common?
Snap on tools
Great video,thanks Mike.
Nice job. Thanks.
Thanks great video and do you think we will see computer programmer in auto shops soon ?
Willy Queen
With the way it’s heading currently, It is gonna be a matter of time only before it gets too complicated that a dedicated auto programmer is needed to deal with computer related faults in a modern vehicle.
Nope, but everything is getting more and more module programming and replacements
i have The first gen maximus. i'm Not Impressed. Next I'm Buying the Altel. I've Used another Shops. Does Much more than my maximus
How often do you have to update the matco?
You pay by the year and multiple updates during that year, via internet connection. if you don't pay everything still works just no updates
Like my dealer said ...it doesnt matter what it costs. Its only $200 a week. Sounds a lot less than 13000.
lol
Autel is so powerful pretty much because they literally pirate/ copy the orginal mfg software and make it in a android format. I have mercedes Star diagnosis and I compared it to autel and they are almost identical as if they copied the software. Just a few left out menus.
I have the autel MS908P and the Verus D10. I use the autel way more, but on domestic vehicles Snap on is much better because its more user friendly
shhhh! ;)
I would agree with that
Very informative thank you
great job!!
Mike whats your desert island scan tool, assuming you have no internet access in any form and you do 40% American, 40% Asian and 20% Euro, nothin but diag, what's your go to tool, I know what mine is
Autel
@@BobbyCulpepper.srv3fender last 10 diags i used the Matco Max 3.0 does that count😉
Have you tried the mac tools MDT10
Same as the OTC
Thanks from P.R.!!!!
Good Video! Thanks!
I'd like to know more about autel and launches lower line of scan tools . Not code readers but Scan tools . In the 500 to 1200$ range
@@staydriven578 . Good info . Thank you !
That is a problem for me as I have no experience with the lower models, sorry
@@flatratemaster . No worries Mike , I'm trying to find something to keep at home to do idle relearns after a throttle body clean and automated brake bleed activation .
Excellent video
I have been looking at scan tools for collision pre and post repair scanning. Can any of those tools print ?
Yep..I use the Matco/Launch for PrePost....all ya need is a 50 dollar wireless printer...then download a printing app and sync them. Makes a nice little report telling you codes and all modules scanned.
I am looking into adding a Snappy ApolloD8 to the diag drawer....or maybe even a Zeus if they c ok me out with some rebates or price breaks as I dont need a lot of the bells and whistles for the collision side.
Both the Snappy tools I mentioned have printing capabilities also...hit you have to use snappys cloud system...but its do able.
I have the zurich pro from harbor frieght its great.....
Are you a professional tech? I am just a shade tree mechanic and am thinking of buying the Zurich. After a month of using it , do you still like it. I am not worried about updates because I only drive older vehicles. Do you think it would be ok in my situation or should I look at the autel 906?
@@rogergooden7812 yes I'm a line technician work with different manufacturers
Would you recommend it for someone who does not work in a professional setting?
Happy Friday
lots of misinformation - for example, there are only 2 updates per year, not 4. Plus, the last update for Verus Pro was 21.2, not 17.4.
I hate how the Chinese tools list mass air flow pids in lb/s . You have to raise the rpm to 1200 before you even see a change.. it should be grams not pounds
Cool tools. 😉
;0)
EXCELLENT
Fait 6 colour cables.
We will you do a review on the Zeus by snap on
Nope, not buying one and my dealer knows my thought on it
Ok tks for info
Is it that bad of a scanner cuz I'm thinking about buying one
Hey mike what are pids
Parameter IDs, looking at live data, say you pull up bank 1 sensor 1 O2 sensor and it shows it moving from .100 mv to .800mvs that data line is called a PID
@@flatratemaster thank you
