#3 is a huge deal, but it is really really hard to know how to do correctly. At times, it’s quite hard to rank order things of most to least importance when seeing it for the first or second time. How do you speed this process up? Do you read, do practice questions, then write or unlock cards?
I think I usually do questions and if I get MULTIPLE questions wrong on a particular subject, that signals that I have no idea wtf is happening, and accordingly, I will add more cards to that subjects. But de novo making a shit ton of cards on everything to start has not proven to be the best approach from my experience.
#4 is extremely valid. Especially for anxious students. One wants to complete the cards for the day to feel accomplished than to pause and reflect on a card, but it is very needed. Anki, when used correctly, is still a red pill though!

I was just having this conversation with other premeds the other day. anki is great for content review and knowing the barebones information necessary for the MCAT. however, once you know this information it is essential to apply it to AAMC practice questions to understand how to apply that knowledge you've accumulated.
This is a really solid informations. im currently experimenting my anki to "schedule" my review session for concepts and practice tests for potential solution for anki not good to learn big concepts. the cards are simple, usually like: question: review the concept of indifference curve, if i understand the concept really well, i will have to review the concept lesser; for practice questions, i usually do like: question: do algebra 1 question pack on book A, i'll specifically focus on problem that im struggling the most. In a way i do this because im just that type of guy that dont like scheduling my activities to calendar, i like flexibility.
Great insights and thanks for sharing! I struggle with oral exams in which I have to exhibit knowledge from A to Z on a topic and not recall it in questions. I am not sure if I should make my own “sketchy” to visualize mentally during examination... I feel ANKI gives me lots of power, but fragmented: excellent for a multiple choice exam, but still haven’t figured out the best fit for oral exams.
Anki is good for critical thinking. When I am making my flashcards, and coming up with a suitable translation for some Japanese grammar, I have to consult various websites and dictionaries until I finally get it, then solidify it into flashcard form to study.
As for #2 - it depends. When I took physical chemistry we weren't provided with any cheatsheet with formulae. I made flashcards with sample problems and formulae as well as testable facts from the lectures, which allowed me to pass the final with flying colours.

Hi Prerak! Thanks for always sharing helpful contents. While using Anki, have you ever encountered the problem of Cloze deletion? Eg. I accidentally made some error while editing my card. And then Anki requires me to add a cloze deletion or use the empty card too.
I have a question, can one use almost all (80-90%) of the most important anki features for making flashcards using ipad? I have a budget for either an ipad or a laptop and I want to buy an ipad for several reasons... But I also wanma use anki a lot. ( I already use anki on my phone, not as much regularly but I do hv my first yr decks made on my phone only... I managed to use image occlusion :p )
iPad or Tablets are not laptop replacements even if you buy an iPad with magic keyboard it still going to feel like a mediocre laptop beacuse the operative system like mac or windows have better features in programs like the offices,drive sheets or docs and anki

I’ve always wanted to use Anki but would quickly give up because of its interface and more importantly because I didn’t feel like it was effective for me 😅 I especially love the part where you said you keep building your deck and you didn’t use them until closer to end of term! This made so much more sense why I always found anki to be a chore and just impossible to finish if I have to keep making new decks while keeping up with the review concurrently Hopefully with your tips, I can be more effective when prepping for my board exams

My experience with learning goes like this: Feynman + Anki is perfect! Feynman without Anki is OK. But Anki without Feynman is foolish. "Feynman" refers to the Feynman technique where you prepare a perfect presentation for the topic you want to learn -- even when you have no idea about the topic (like "Citric Acid Cycle"). Google for "Feynman technique" if you don't already know it. It's worth a million since it forces you to wrap your head around the big picture.
