  • Anki is a flashcard-based program that is extremely popular among medical students in order to memorize the high volume of material in the medical school curriculum. In this video, I discuss exactly why I struggled to find success with #anki and my recommendations, advice, and tips for medical students using the app.

I hate doing chores. And honestly, anki felt like a huge chore burning me out every single day

You're actually right. It's good to know oneself and do what works for you..! Not because everyone is doing it. Thanks for sharing. I personally do not use flashcards. I know it's kinda crazy but I still hit those goals without using flashcards.

This is so good and I’m really learning that memorization without understanding will screw u for the situational construct of the questions on exams

Exactly, Danielle! Major difference between memorization for recall and understanding/applying knowledge to answer questions.

@@thejuliacarter I am currently in the Rutgers MBS-PWAY program and completely had to change my study habits from flashcards to recitation and a 3 pass study approach. It's helping me retain things more easily! I feel good about applying to medical school lol

@@thejuliacarter how does this work for classes like gross anatomy that seem to be memorization based ?

I would love a video on how you studied in medical school

Same here. I was shocked after I realised after 2 months of Ankying that I need to recall again and again, fight with brain to make sure not to forget it but If we understand we do not need that many recalls
I was also trying to Recall Random individual facts

Anki is just a tool to reinforce what you LEARNED, not to use it as a primary tool of learning. You must first understand the material, then you reinforce it through Anki to retain it through spaced repetition. If you are just using it and brutely memorizing without understanding the material, then it won't work well for you.

Not sure if you have a video on this already but can you make one on what does work for you/ your study routine?

I failed 2 courses in my first year of medical school as a result of mis-using anki. I dropped anki altogether, found my own method of studying and shot up my grades dramatically.

Justin Sung elaborates on this, anki without deeper processing is counterproductive

Anki is just terrible. I take the physical flashcards over anki every time. The code, the algorithm, user interface. It's just a poorly written software.

Yes Mercy, there are many. Ones that come to mind are the Zanki deck or the Lightyear deck. You can find them online.
