    The removable motherboard tray is such a good idea, why was it abandoned? Not only is it convenient, but it also gives you a test bench to make sure everything works without having to install it all into an awkward to fit case and then uninstall everything again to fix it. Perhaps the modern day coolers just make this kind of design unergenomical.

    • @ask4kobebeef
      @ask4kobebeef 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Probably because without the motherboard tray the case is flimsy and flexes a lot. Most cases nowadays are made out of thin aluminium sheets while back then cases were much more rigid and robust, made out of 1.5mm+ thick steel.

    Man, this sure brings back some memories! You might not want to connect your relatively “fast” 7200RPM HDD into the same IDE-channel with your optical drive though. Most optical drives of that era only support up to UDMA-33 transfers while your HDD and motherboard support up to UDMA-100. The entire IDE-channel transfer speed is determined by the slowest device in the channel so your 7200RPM drive now gets a very noticeable performance hit. This was a very common mistake back in the day so some motherboard manufacturers started to clearly label their bundled IDE-cables as “CD-ROM” for the UDMA-33 cable and “HDD” for the UDMA-100 cable. The recommended way to connect your drives was HDDs in the primary IDE-channel using UDMA-100 cable and optical drives in the secondary IDE-channel using either UDMA-33 or UDMA-100 cable which ever happened to be at hand. You could also leave the jumpers at the default CS (Cable Select) setting if you’re not building any unusual configurations. In this setting the drive at the end of the IDE-cable will be considered as master and the one connected in the middle connector will be considered as slave, regardless of how many drives you are connecting. I seem to recall some benchmarks actually showing a slight increase in disk performance using the CS setting but don’t quote me on this. It’s been a long time.
    Some ideas for improvement;
    If you would like to have a large HDD storage in a period correct way (for Tualatin era) you could try to find an old PCI IDE RAID card and 4 (or more) period correct 60-80GB drives. I remember some people did this back in the day and it was darn impressive! Oh did I wish I could afford it myself.
    For the ultimate Tualatin experience you could try to find the legendary Asus TUSL2-C motherboard and unleash the beast by some overclocking goodness! For the maximum fun factor you might need to look for some highly overclock-able RAM too especially if you’re overclocking a Pentium3 that runs 133MHz FSB at stock. Back in 2002 I built a cheap Tualatin gaming rig from used parts and even though it wasn’t the cutting edge technology anymore it was still insanely powerful! I had a Tualatin based Celeron “Tualeron” overclocked somewhere around 1.7GHz with a huge aftermarket HSF. My Radeon 8500 64MB DDR graphics card had an AMD K6-2 CPU cooler bolted on the GPU and HUGE memory heatsinks cut out from an old Pentium2 passive heatsink! And of course it was volt-modded and overclocked to the absolute max. I even had a similar full-size ATX case like the one in the video with 4 powerful Papst case fans but it wasn’t too loud because I effectively sound-insulated the entire case with materials bought from the local car parts store. This rig used to run in circles around the early top-of-the-line Pentium4 Northwoods of the day that were outrageously more expensive than the old Pentium3 based Celeron! Had I built this system a year earlier from brand new parts it would’ve been even more phenomenal. It was my main computer till September 2005. It even used to run Half-Life 2 quite nicely with decent quality settings. Don’t expect to see that happening with the Voodoo5 though. On the other hand it might be fun to try :) Sometimes I still feel the urge to build a new Tualatin rig and do it even better than the first time. Just for the sake of nostalgia…I think building a PC used to be more fun and interesting those days; so much more challenging and rewarding than now.
    By the way you could always go for a period correct PSU and simply recap it if the caps have gone bad. Seeing how you did the Voodoo card it should be a piece of cake for you. IMHO it would add greatly to the nostalgia factor keeping it as period correct as practically possible; the loud fan noises, the HDD grinding and all, would be like a time machine for every sense :)

I remember using a ZIP Drive in this “era” (had one with parallel interface, I think I still have it somewhere in the house), just before CD-R and RW completely killed ZIP Drives. At least here in Brazil (and we were a few steps behind the US due to high prices of hardware). Anyway, very good video, I collect some things and hardware IS not one of them, but I appreciate things from the past so well taken care!

      And here I had to use my older brother's stash of Hustler and Playboy with the pages all stuck together which he in turn stole from my Dad. I still remember the issue of Playboy with Laytoyah Jackson on the cover. But these were the days before computer porn was a common thing. I had to make due with that, or with the porn on Pay Per View cuz we had one of those cable boxes that gave you all the channels. Or if that wasn't available, I just had to make due with scrambled porn on the other TV without a box. Or movies with sexy scenes, like that scene in Ghostbusters 2 when the bath tub tries to eat Sigourney Weaver and she's in her bra. Man my standards were low back then.

      Awesomeness Plays for pc at that time? 480p is low res. Common is 1024x768 at 100hz. And if I remember correctly, year 2000 I was using 24" 1200p crt monitor. And that's the reason why most gamer back then were very late to adopt LCD screen. LCD were Low res and low fps.

    • @AxzoYT
      @AxzoYT 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well, i mean still MOST were using CRT's until like maybe(?) windows 7. But yeah now the standard is 720 or 768 or mostly 1080/1440

    Great video! Thanks for sharing! It brought back a lot of memories from that time period. I worked a lot with Intel boards a lot during that time because they were quite stable and reliable for the corporate world. It was fun to see one being built again. I agree that the Inwin Q500 was an amazing case! I think I had 2 or 3 of them at different times. Still have one in storage.
    I'm surprised that you put the CD drive and the hard drive on the same ribbon. PATA can only run as fast as the slowest device. Most CDs were usually capped at ATA/33 while the newer hard drives could go as high as ATA/133. This motherboard was capped out at ATA/100, but with that 80 conductor ribbon, you could definitely get more performance out of it with the CD drive on the secondary IDE interface.
