thanks for the clarification - the majority of my peers believe they are great at multitasking and i just stand by watching their malfunctioning brains
*Why you can't Multi-task!* What you think it being productive as you are doing loads at once is an illusion. Actually an illusion in two different ways. This video looks into the research about multitasking and how it affects you. You might be able to tell, it is not always a good thing. *Video* th-cam.com/video/nM3xVPBA62M/w-d-xo.html *References* www.forbes.com/sites/travisbradberry/2014/10/08/multitasking-damages-your-brain-and-career-new-studies-suggest/2/ www.brainfacts.org/sensing-thinking-behaving/awareness-and-attention/articles/2013/the-multitasking-mind/ hbr.org/2015/01/the-curious-science-of-when-multitasking-works www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-24645100
I'd be curious to read how the studies for this were actually set up. moreover, it seems patently absurd to me that man would be incapable of multitasking as, if that were the case, then nobody could play an organ, a piano, or a harp by ear or follow a layered melody. This easily seems like it could be a case where the researchers have tested a very specific definition of "multitasking" that doesn't necessarily match up with how the word is commonly used.
if you're playing a piano you're not multitasking, you're playing a piano. There's difference between doing an activity that requires multiple actions at once, and doing multiple activities.
So according to this video, being a musician is impossible. Musicians have to stay on tempo, play the instrument, read music WHILE playing, watch the conductor, keep a steady rhythm, and know what the music says to do. Also according to this video, marching band is also impossible.
Someone who is brand new to playing an instrument can do none of them things you mentioned, however they learn one by one until they become more automatic. In making them more automatic, they don't have to think about it. But it still isn't perfect. Take driving for example, even if you have been driving for years if you turn your head while driving, the car starts to drift. But anything is possible when you're a magical talking trash can
Lol Multitasking is real, with Neuroscientific evidence. There is a difference between "Everyone is really bad at multitasking" and "Everyone cannot multitask at all". True fact that everyone is pretty trash at multitasking doesn't mean everyone can or multitask at all

well and then there are companies/academies that simply expect you to be able to multitask...
