  • R&B Guitar Riff - Soul Man by Sam and Dave (Steve Cropper on guitar). This is one of the top R&B guitar fills you must know. Really tasty guitar work by Steve Cropper!
    Soul Man, with its great R&B guitar riff, is a 1967 song written and composed by Isaac Hayes and David Porter, and was a hit single by Atlantic Records soul duo Sam & Dave. Co-author Isaac Hayes found the inspiration for "Soul Man" in the turmoil of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. In July 1967, watching a television newscast of the aftermath of the 12th Street riot in Detroit, Michigan, Hayes noted that black residents had marked buildings that had not been destroyed during the riots with the word "soul". Relating this occurrence to the biblical story of the Passover, Hayes and songwriting partner David Porter came up with the idea, in Hayes's words, of "a story about one's struggle to rise above his present conditions. It's almost a tune kind of like boasting, 'I'm a soul man.' It's a pride thing."

    The exclamation "Play it, Steve" heard in the song refers to guitarist Steve Cropper of Booker T. & the M.G.'s, the house band who provided the instrumentation for it and other Sam and Dave singles. Cropper provided guitar for both the original Sam and Dave recording as well as the live and studio covers by the Blues Brothers.
    In 2019, "Soul Man" was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry as "culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress.

      Thanks so much Bruce! I try to mix it up. Playing lots of styles has its advantages and disadvantages. Personally, switching styles helps me to stay interested. Thanks again!

    Great stuff, Mark. Thank you. More a fan of Steve Cropper and his playing on this, than I am of the song itself.

      I love almost all of it. Cropper's playing is outstanding, but so is the horn arrangement, and Sam and Dave singing it. And that turnaround at the end of the chorus is an absolute classic. Great bridge too. If there's a weakness it's that the chorus itself doesn't have a huge payoff (compared to, say, Hold On, I'm Coming), but that turnaround makes up for it.
      I love the R&B/Soul music of this era so much - Motown, TSOP, Stax, Fame and Muscle Shoals ... so good. I tend to like the "earthier" recordings, but they're all good. And so many great guitarists ... Steve Cropper standing way up at the pinnacle. He simply has a way of sounding unique doing something dead simple. That's so hard to do!

      @@MarkZabel I completely agree about Steve Cropper being 'The Man', in terms of guitar players for Motown, Muscle Shoals and so on; and - just like George Harrison - as you noted, he sounds unique while doing something fairly simple. I think that the melody of the song is what I am not that attracted to - but I love the parts..

    Opening lick sounds a little bit like John fogerty

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, you think so? I guess Fogerty might have adapted some of the earlier soul players into his more rootsy play. I'm sure he was influenced by Cropper and some others, but I don't know how much. Very interesting observation!

      Yeah, makes sense that he's playing 6ths. It's fairly common, so I wonder if he got it from Cropper or someone else. Interesting how the song has a totally different feel though the notes are similar.
