I used to play this at gigs in the 70s and 80s. I see now I didn't play the verse part exactly right so thanks for the more accurate rendition since I plan to do a cover with my musician kids. Steve Cropper came up with some of the most clever, perfectly fitting comp parts ever.

I used to play this at gigs at university in the early 2000s and I did exactly the same! Learned it by ear and didn't realise that the verse riff started with the lower G chord, so used the higher inversion that it goes up to. Still sounded ok and nobody noticed (I hope...)

Actually - this is the best lesson for this song on youtube. For a start, the tone is pretty decent, you explain the harmonic structure, and you don't labour the fret numbers overly. So helpful when you are explaining it in terms of the intervals and triads. Thanks!

Steve said that he sat down during the recording of this song (he’d normally stand in the studio) with a zippo lighter balanced on his thigh. He grabbed it to play the slide lick, then placed it back on his thigh.

I started playing in 1967 @ age 14 and yes by "15" I was playing in Nite clubs and the Tele was king and on almost all the hits. It had the dominant sounds of the time. And this guy has a very nice looking "TELECASTER".

This was awesome gave me a big lift, im playing for a year and a half, 8 hrs a day 7 days a week....Its my main job, bc i built a studio, and with covid its been dead!, but it gave me all this time to learn..And tonight this was so easy for me when i had trouble with rythm and my right hand...Im a lefty, i learned some chords as a kid right handed...So, when i started again at 39, i said why relearn how to play with my natural hand,,,when i stated already right handed! my dexterity and picking is great...but my right hand couldnt move rythmically, it was a dead fish lol, but perseverance paid off! a couple days ago i told myself i dont think ill ever be able to play any 16th note rhythm..i was wrong.....

Can't make that d over c chord with the thumb thing...literally painful, so I figured it out with fingers sans thumb. It's a sweet sounding interval...sometimes these little details make the song. Thanks!

By the way, Cropper never overdubbed parts during this classic period (they couldn't have if they wanted to, they didn't have enough tracks) and AFAIK never used slide in his playing. (There'd be no way to get it on and off in time to get back to the rhythm part.) He's famous for combining rhythm and lead at the same time.

Quick note, the Blues Brothers version is in E. Ask your singer what key they do it in unless you wan to transpose everything down a minor third on the fly.
