  • This unique film documents two decades of the rescue, recovery and rebuilding at the World Trade Center site in New York City. It is the longest running time-lapse project in the company’s history, including never-before-seen EarthCam footage spanning 20 years.
EarthCam has been on site since 2001 when EarthCam CEO & Founder, Brian Cury, installed a webcam just days after the attacks to webcast the rescue mission to the families of the missing. As rescue became recovery and eventually rebuilding, EarthCam set to work to develop new robotic DSLR camera technology necessary to document this revered 16 acre site in the highest resolution possible.
Every few minutes for 20 years, panoramic images captured the transformation of downtown Manhattan from over 100 viewing angles, totaling 13.3 million individual photos.
“We appreciate EarthCam’s unprecedented contribution of 20 years of historic images, which have meticulously recorded the rebuilding that transformed this sacred space,” said 9/11 Memorial President and CEO Alice M. Greenwald, “This creative time-lapse both honors the legacy of those who were killed and embodies hope for the future, as we see these remarkable new structures that surround the Memorial as evidence of lower Manhattan’s resilience and renewal.”
All two decades of content, in addition to the original EarthCam camera have been donated to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
“This is an emotional milestone for EarthCam, as the history of the company has been so intertwined with this site.” said Brian Cury, CEO and Founder of EarthCam, “We’re grateful to many partners, friends, and to the extraordinary team at EarthCam whose dedication and passion supported this effort over the past 20 years, so that we may share this historic archive and honor the lives lost due to the September 11th attacks.”
Produced & Directed by Brian Cury
Archival Producers: Lana Moskalyova & Juan Navas
Webcam Technology: Bill Sharp, Colin Sheehan, Dylan Stark, Michael Winfield
Editors: Travis Cooper & Brian Cury

I remember the controversy when it was announced but i still cant believe they went ahead and did it. Truly embarrassing.

I can tell that so much emotion went into the rebuilding of this site. Sure, not every New Yorker got exactly what they wanted out of the new skyline, but it’s truly the thought that counts the most when you’re building on such hallowed ground. Americas hearts will always be with those killed on 9/11, and the vastness of the new memorial proves that. 1WTC has also gained a following of its own as the city begins to warm up to its ever-present reflection. So much heart and soul went into this rebuilding that it’s hard not to simply shrug off any criticism. Amazing work.

I was there around the same time, only a child, but I remember seeing the massive hole in the ground and lots of dust and dirt from the construction/cleanup site. I was visiting NYC (and various other US and Canadian cities - Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Buffalo, Toronto etc.) from England with my parents, it must have been around 2005 or 2006 I think. The head of the Statue of Liberty had been closed to the public as the threat of a similar event was still present, so I could only go as far as the feet/lower legs I think.
I also saw ground zero from inside an adjacent building a few floors up and it was such a strange place - the vast hole and emptiness contrasted to a dense downtown financial district. The sense and aurora of loss was clear to me. Even as a young child the visual atmosphere made me feel uneasy, I’ll never forget it.
I’m glad I did visit as it will probably never feel and look the same way again, it still felt raw and real to me, but now 20 years on it’s just history and a distant memory for many my age (if any memory at all). If you are young it’s easy to walk there now and not fully realise the scale of what happened...
I have a photo of me and my mother taken from inside the other building with the huge hole outside in the background. Even now it still seems massive, but to a little kid you can imagine how much bigger it must have felt.

It's truly a tragic incident which happened in 9/11 however it is quite intriguing that they relentlessly keep mentioning "we will never forget". After all it's a big historical incident we are aware that it won't be forgotten any time soon. The way they repeatedly reminding us poses a revengeful intention. It seems they are unaware that the revenge is already been accomplished.
The countless casualties of the innocent civilians of Iraq and Afghanistan and the millions displaced and got involved in a decades long war for something they never did, under the false slogan of "war on terror" as an excuse.
Well then, that's won't be forgotten either.

This was an incredibly amazing video. Hard to watch still to this day, and I'm probably 2,000 miles away from NYC. My husband was a 25 year volunteer firefighter. He was home on vacation when 9/11 took place. I'd gotten our son dropped off at school after an appt. where we saw the plane hit tower 2. As soon as I got home, I called him from our roof where he was working and told him that I needed him to come down right away. Normally he would have asked why but he didn't. He came down, and followed me to the living room where hell was raining down as one and then two towers came to the ground. He kept working on getting old roof off but came in often to see what was happening. We held each other and cried. Never did I think I would see something this horrific in my lifetime. I'm so scared for my grandkids and their futures.

I remember watching this unfold in a state of disbelief and utter sadness, at the time it was kinda overwhelming but watching all the documentaries since that time the most amazing thing is not the sense of horror or the sadness, it’s the New Yorkers incredible strength and bravery shown by every single person and the lack of any anger. This day was an attempt to spread fear and anger throughout the Western World and it simply had the total opposite effect. New York stood strong and the Rest of the civilised world stood behind them. RIP to those lost on this day, you died as hero’s in the war against pure evil. Love from Ireland 🇮🇪

As an American, when ever I look at the construction of the memorial, I feel immense pride in my country and the fact that I am a citizen of it. Although our politicans can do things groups don’t like, we are still a very transparent, free and great country. We can be like a phoenix in some ways. When an attack by a foreign group happens on American soil, we rebuild from the ashes. 9/11 was one of these examples, after the shock, Americans as a people wanted a war in terrorism, and the memorial construction began, we never have and never will forget those who died in 9/11, god bless America.

    • @robtyman4281

Yes, because of the sheer amount of debris (including bodies to identify first before the rubble was cleared).
Then they would have had to 'de-contaminate' the land of harmful dust particles such as asbestos and other nasties. Then digging out all the foundations that made up the footprint of the Twin Towers, and turning them into the water memorials.
So yes, this is why it a took so long - the best part of 20 years. Probably a good thing they didn't rush things when you consider all the things that needed to be done.

My Dad turned on the TV in time for us to see the second plane hit and realize that it wasn't an accident. Seeing your video remind me of how much was lost and yet how resilient the American people are. Those two holes in the ground where the towers were hurt every time I see I see them but it's a good kind of hurt. It reminds me that this nation can and will endure any attack and will always rebuild and grow.
