The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center had become synonymous with the skyline of the city. Iconic towers that have become symbols far beyond the city limits. Replacing such symbols seems like an impossible task, and it became a challenge that will end up taking over 20 years, in which countless different interests will have to be weighed against each other.

I love how you recognize the damage to the other buildings of WTC Plaza. Tens to hundreds of people inside of them died, and I feel like it is important to remember that the twin towers didn’t just fall onto the ground, but they hit many buildings around them and many people died from ways different than being in the twin towers or the planes

While it's true that other buildings were damaged by falling debris, what still baffles me to this day is how no other buildings in Manhattan suffered a) catastrophic damage, b) uncontrolled fire and c) complete collapse on 9/11 except coincidentally World Trade Center 7 -- which was 300 feet away from the North Tower. Even the Deutsche Bank Building which was much closer to the twin towers than even World Trade Center 7, only was damaged, but there was no fire nor collapse. The same is true of the World Financial Center 2 and Verizon Building, which were both in relative proximity to the twin towers, yet didn't suffer fire and collapse. It was just World Trade Center 7 on that day.
Even more striking was how Osama Bin Laden, a qualified civil engineer, stated afterward that his intention was never to fully collapse the twin towers, moreless the entire World Trade Center Complex. Given that statement, it would be like winning the Powerball lottery without even entering the lottery. Statistical anomalies like that are almost unheard of in everyday life, yet it all came to pass on 9/11.

There was a proposal to build them back to look the same externally, but to be safer inside and one story taller. If only we had taken that route. It would have been the ultimate middle finger to our enemies, to show they didn't just waste their time, but we came back taller.
I've thought the same thing. It would symbolize that the people are unstoppable and defiant to terrorists' cause.
Doesn't matter if it was safer inside, the government blew up the twin towers.

Im in North Central Indiana, im a conservative, ive never had enough money to be a Republican, but i disagreed with DJT, the terrorists will not win if we rebuild, that whole area is on bedrock, and once were all dead and gone, someone will get the idea to rebuild it anyway, why not do it now, or at least start it, and build it tough like NYC , never to be toppled again !!! Just an opinion from a fly over state !!! The new buildings would make great headstones for all who died there , and lewve a lil memorial section between the two
They destroyed these towers . E-TEAM was on 91st floor of Tower 1 . Exactly where they carved the plane wing shape holes after the 1st explosion. Wake up. We weren’t attacked by Osama. It was elements of our own government!
Are we just going to ignore the fact he 3D rendered ALL of manhattan for a 5-second shot which transitioned to the trade-towers? This man deserves WAY more recognition.

You can 100% find 3D models of Manhattan out there if you look around. One of the most famous cities in the world; so many reasons why someone might want a 3D model of it for some purpose so I'd be *shocked* if there weren't any online.

I was in New York a month ago and had no idea I booked a hotel so close to the site. I walked there with my wife, and it was an incredibly sombre yet uplifting moment when we saw the names of the people who lost their lives there, as well as the beautiful tower built nearby. It was heartbreaking to touch the names of those who were lost that day but also incredibly inspirational to see how New York managed to both recover and remember, with a breathtaking site to honour those lost, remember the day's events, and look forward to something brighter all at the same time. It was an experience I will never forget.

Daniel Libeskind must be one of the most ego-free architects in the history of architects. This video gave me a whole new respect for the man and for his vision. Thank you for sharing this with us.
I agree. I really would've liked to see his full idea for the grounds implemented. I was honestly disappointed as soon as the part in the video came where they started throwing his ideas out. :/
I understand his 1,776 feet symbolism and his entire design, but eventually those buildings would be obscured by other skyscrapers and the sight line from the site to the Statue of Liberty would be gone. The current tallest building on site is huge and blocky from the street level, which I don’t like, but it is also serving the original function (and more) of the two main towers.

Well….. that’s not what was being reported at that time… they definitely compacted the drama here…. Every day there was a new story about Child’s vs Libeskind… fighting tooth and nail over windows lol… and Silverstein playing referee
Libeskind published a timely autobiography entitled "Breaking Ground". It was about his humble beginning and career until being chosen for the commission of a lifetime. I'd hardly call the effort egoless, despite the underdog "David vs. Goliath" theme. Still, it was easy to gain a liking for the man, and it's bittersweet in retrospect- since his ideas were only partially implemented.
I still think that Libeskind’s design was so much more well thought out, and generally seemed more heartfelt towards the families due to the huge inclusion of a memorial and a museum, and rebuilding the original streets. It was also just a far more unique design that doesn’t just blend in with every other skyscraper in Manhattan like freedom tower. Now don’t get me wrong freedom tower is a very cool building, but the original proposal would’ve been so much better.
One WTC isn't very cool, it's completely meh. Libeskind's design and the compromised design with the other guy looked good, this one just looks like a generic blue shape.

I agree, I was mad when they didn't use Libeskinds idea because it was so much more thought out. Sure, it sounds like I'm overreacting, but I didn't want it to just be a giant blue shape!

I think many people don’t realize that the towers were basically tubes with the stairways and elevators going down the middle. I saw a documentary about the building of the towers and from the windows to the elevator shaft was all open space so that it could be configured however the occupants wanted. That’s why when the planes hit them, them, there was nothing to hold them up.

They were designed that way so they wouldn't be destroyed if hit by aircraft. It was a major design consideration.

The core of the towers was held by 47 steel columns, with elevators, and three emergency stair wells. The first tower that was hit, was hit straight on, destroying all the stair wells. The second place hit the tower at an angle and destroyed two of the three stairwells. The steel columns were bent and shrunk by the heat. After approximately an hour of burning, the steel could no longer hold up the upper floors. Thus, resulting in the fall of the towers. The towers were actually built to withstand hurricane and earthquake strength.
Small detail about Libeskind's design: the towers, in addition to being viewed in hight order from Liberty Island, also include the titled roofs which - if i recall correctly - are meant to symbolise the buildings almost respecting and bowing to the site of the original Towers. A really wonderful idea in my opinion.

Why didn’t they build like before?
I wish that the WTC 2 site would match the Freedom Tower but take tons of inspiration from Libeskind, and make it ever so slightly taller at 1787 to commemorate the signing of the US Constitution. That would really complete the NYC skyline.

I wish that lectures in schools could be as interesting as this.
Reflective absence has to be one of the most beautiful architecture projects ever. It gives visibility and complete protagonism to the victims which were the real losing from this tragic event, and to grief, peace, and respect. Im so glad that project was the winner.
The other buildings in the WTC complex seem so small when compared, yet when you look at them individually they were still quite big. The size of the twin towers was absolutely huge.
In addition, Daniel Libeskind`s entry for the WTC design competition, his buildings are strategically placed that in a certain time of day, the glass buildings reflect a ray of light from the sun, that ray of light is where the approximate flight path of the planes before hitting the original towers. Daniel Libeskind is renowned for his architectural design by incorporating the play of light in his works.
Kudos to the production behind this documentary, neo. This is more than just a documentary, this is an exceptional kind of storytelling. 💯💯💯

@@dmr8914 the terrorists weren't the only ones on the plane. 147 civilians were on just the two planes. No one survived. They aren't glorifying the terrorists, those planes were the last moments of almost 150 people. I would have found it comforting know that where that ray of sunshine was, is where one of my family members was that day. And the attack has already been immortalized. Maybe you oughta rethink your outlook. Instead of immediately thinking of the 150 lives lost, that those rays of sun represent, you went to the worst thought that he was some how immortalizing the 10 terrorists.
By your ridiculous logic, building any memorial there at all would be immortalizing the attack. Think before you spout nonsense.

I had the honor to be a contractor on the Freedom Tower which I will never forget. The amount of techs/workers who came every morning for years was unreal. The massive engineering it took to design every inch of that building was incredible to see. I was there for few weeks, every morning, working on the antenna and the view will stay with me forever. I have never seen even one construction worker ever going number one outside on the property. Not even one guy/girl spit on the floor. I was so honored to be a part of it.

Visiting as a tourist was incredible. The timeline of the NYC skyline you see on the elevator was powerful. I was born in 2001 so I never got to see the towers, but it was still emotional seeing how quickly they fade in and out.
The US Government was behind the attacks. Most are too stupid not to believe it.
World Trade Center 2 would look great with the 4 diamond design.
I'm on a Minecraft survival server and I am building a 1:4 scale of the New World Trade Center complex. That's the design I'm building, it's simply the best looking from the outside and that's what most people will be seeing, unless you work there or take a tour. The max you're seeing is the lobby. The server and irl public will admire that in the skyline way more than the other designs. Simple as that. (Btw I'm currently in the pathway for Architecture, and will hopefully get into an Architecture program in a year and a half

I always get mixed feelings around this time of year. I was born mere hours before the attacks, and growing up we always watched the memorial documentaries every year in school. As well as on my birthday. I was always told these stories by people older than me that I met. They would talk about the exact time and place where they watched the tragedy unfold, and they would tell me "I'm sorry about your birthday".

You could see it as the only nice thing to take away from that exact time is that lives like your own were being created and filled with potential. It’s a real shame what happened and I recall the day well, although I live in a different country. But your birth is sort of the antithesis of that provided you are a good person! It's pretty messed up for someone to say they're sorry about your birthday. It's not like you had any say in the matter.
I remember watching the towers fall live on TV while my brother and I were getting ready to catch the bus for school. It was an intense event, but I never understood why people put so much stock in the date. It was a trajedy, but it doesn't require reverence.
I visited Ground Zero once maybe a year or two after the attacks. I remember there were still remnants of the original subway station and the trains would slow down as they passed. Everything was boarded up and taped off but you could see daylight through the cracks. And a pair of firefighter boots on the platform.
You had to get off at the next station and walk back to the site, which was a giant hole in the ground with a construction fence around it.
That image is still what I picture in my head even though I know things have been rebuilt since then.
I had the opportunity to visit last year and you know…they’re doing well, man. The memorial section is beautiful with plenty of places to just hang out and reflect. The mall area (at least when I was there) was still very much in development. One WTC towers over it all like a behemoth. But the centerpiece is absolutely the pools at the original towers’ foundations. Looking down into them, you get an idea for the unbelievable enormity of the attacks, those buildings and what an incredible achievement it was just to clean up the aftermath…the piles of insanity must’ve been a hundred feet high in every direction. Definitely a worthwhile visit for anyone, American or not, who wants to see what’s doin over there nowadays.

Nothing can match or replace the Twin Towers! Nothing
so glad they went for strong, more simple designs. The site of the towers didn't need much pimping and decoration. The solemn empty space filled only by the infinity pool and surrounded by the names of the victims really make you feel the weight of the event after all these years.
Sans the pools, they aren't strong though. The originals by Yamasaki definitely were. These? eh....
First, the site feels like key chain architecture. Nothing really working together. Just each structure tacked on as another item.
Second, Freedom Tower is a half effort attempt akin to when you were in school and you had to sit through another student's definitely half baked presentation. I mean it's a building. It's like every other building, VE'd (being polite) out of it's mind that any symbolism is post rationalized poorly and incredibly weak.
I walk by it every day on my way to work. Once in a while I stop and look at couple of the names and imagine who they might have been. Someone pretty similar to me, maybe born about 20 years earlier than me for their life up to that day being similar to my life now.
I get carried away imagining it, and then when I stop and remember where I am, I am met with just the sound of nothing but the water running. It's a strange feeling.

What's amazing is I came up with the same idea for the reflecting pools surrounded by names in late September of 2001, long before any proposals were even being drafted for the site. I still have my original sketches that I made while at work over lunch break. I was inspired by the Vietnam memorial in Washington D.C. with the walls of names.

My mom worked in the Deutsche Bank building, and my dad was a first responder at Ground Zero during and after the attacks. 15 years later, my boyfriend(now husband) got assigned to the Oculus. I’m lucky that my parents survived, and it was such a full circle moment for me. I got emotional when he received the assignment.

I visited the towers in 1997 when I was 11 years old. There was so much I didn’t understand then. Looking up at them from the street and looking down from them at the viewing floor are experiences I hope to never forget. Thank you for this video explaining the lay out.
I've been fascinated by this drama for years and I've always wanted to know what exactly was there before the attack, thank you for this perfectly detailed video, it's the only one that contains the perfect information about what was before and now
Last time I visited NYC the site was still an inaccessible hole in the ground that everyone in my circle kept mumbling would never actually get built. It makes me really happy to see all the complications at play finally come together to make something beautiful.
While I'm not a biggest fan of the final OWTC design compared to the other ideas, the memorial is absolutely perfect. Nowhere else in NY can you be so surrounded by the sound of moving water. It really creates this bubble of focus on the tragedy that happened there, while also somehow making it hopeful and powerful.
I agree the memorial is great but One World Trade needs a twin. The empty Two World Trade Center lot would be perfect.
I always wanted them to rebuild the twin towers like a big middle finger to the terrorist. I understand why they didn't though. The memorial and museum is absolutely gorgeous.

Daniel Libeskind earned himself a new fan. After researching some of his projects and learning about his design language/methods I am truly enthralled by the man. Meanwhile Larry Silverstein earned himself a new enemy. Fantastic video.
Silverstein is a shady dude. He took out a insurance plan just before the attacks too.
Gotta love how rich people only care about profits and willfully neglect what the people of the country wanted-something to show how the American spirit can't be so easily swayed. Libeskind more than deserved to have his vision put into place, as an artist, I LOVED how he put so much love and compassion into his design and even included the height to be a specific number reflective of American history.
Been to the memorial and honestly, only the water memorial sight meant more to me than the new tower. The tower now feels devoided of anything worth showing emotion, which is extremely sad that many other Americans I spoke with there during my time all felt the memorial waterfall meant more to them. Silverstein is just a fine example of being out of touch with reality and only seeing dollar signs-which is repulsive in the wake of a national tragedy.

I felt the same. Daniel Libeskind conducted himself with such humility and good grace regarding the process and outcome.
I watched the Towers fall with my own eyes, and never returned to Lower Manhattan since. I admire the new tower and our perseverance as a nation. Libeskind is incredibly talented and humble. The memorial looks amazing, maybe its time i return.

I actually really like the sloped roof design for WTC 2. It’s really elegant and fits very well in the mix of all the other buildings in the complex.

in 2003 i was 21 years old and i had a job as a cater waiter. that summer i had a gig on governors island serving at an event which hosted the architects who'd contributed designs. Norman Foster was there and so were several politicians. it was an impressive occasion. there were foam models of some of the designs. it was a really special thing to bear witness too. i remember also one of the wine bottles cracked when unloading, and the manager said to get rid of it to be safe. Instead, we poured it into a pitcher and myself and 2 other staff secretly drank it in the back room. i was almost drunk by the end. a nice buzz. it was forever our secret until now. its a fond memory.

My mom worked at the dutch ‘marachaussee’. She was a teacher there and while she was teaching, they saw it happen on the big screen, a warning came up of possible danger coming to us. They needed to all stay inside because danger may come. After a few hours, some of them got to NYC, but only the real deal came there. My mom didn’t go, because she was inside with her students. She didn’t die but crazy to see that even other countries we’re affected by this.
Why is it crazy, many people in Europe do business with us, our closest allies are in Europe

Honestly, I really loved Libeskin's idea for the leaning rooftops as a sign of respect and I think it would have made a beautiful addition to the skyline.
But I disagree where people originally thought the Freedom Tower's design was uninspired - though the description is sort of fitting as that's what the public originally said with the Twin Towers' design [i.e. being the boxes the Chrysler and Empire State Buildings were delivered in]. The symbolic height is a nice touch and overall the building feels grand. Like it knows its place - not graceful perhaps, but strong. And that's a good message. Maybe the building just grew on me - who knows!
Went to nyc recently. The freedom tower impressed me in person when before, I felt it was just okay in pictures

Always feel freedom tower is the most bland uninspiring shape of yet another office tower that was just given one gimmick twist like any other early 21st century office tower.
Lmao! I like the actual design better. It symbolizes strength in my opinion.. you can perceive it as that. But the diamond shaped tower at 2 WTC is the perfect one to make in that area! I hope they make that one there once they find the tenants for the site.

I went to New York recently. Did not plan to go see the trade centre memorial and museum. Was dragged along by a freind. But I’m sure glad I did. It was incredible. Museum was very well and tastefully curated. Reconstruction of this memorial site and buildings was just beautiful the moment you exit the subway into the oculus and make your way out the building. It’s a must see when going to New York

If you're an American, you shouldn't have to be dragged there. I remember that day and haven't been to NYC yet... but ground zero is the first place I'm going when I'm there.

I didn't realize the WTC had that many buildings, I thought it was just the Twin Towers. I feel like this should have been explained in school, but I'm just now learning this as a 27 year old.

The information that was withheld from that day by congress, and major media is staggering. It was the largest crime scene in The United States and they started tampering with evidence a mere few hours after the buildings were brought down. Do your own research.

Maybe it's just me, but even after so many canceled concept design ideas, i find this one successful not only from an engineering point of view, but also from symbolic side. New tower looks like a merge of previos two (by different angle), personifying the rebirth of twins into something new even stronger and majestic.
He has a lovely soothing voice while watching this. It was cool to see the different design ideas. Nothing will ever really replace the towers, but I do think what they did turned out elegant, classy and respectful. The names surrounding the waterfall designs is beautiful.
as a now 37 year old german, the twin towers have always been iconic for the skyline and i always wanted to see THAT new york and those towers. when we were visiting relatives in pittsburgh in 2000 and 2001, i was nagging them about going to new york, since its not that far away, but they wanted to go to washington instead.. i still remember them saying: "next year.. its not like theyre gonna tear them down anytime soon. theyre older then you, so dont worry, they will wait for you".. well, ive never been up there, although ive been "near" them twice and ive never been to the states again after that point. a year later, my aunt died and her family didnt have much interest in keeping up the contact to german relatives by marriage and those they only saw twice in their lives. it just broke apart. maybe one day again.. but having low income, such a trip is a heavy load to carry. overall: iam not against one wtc, i just wish, theyve build 2 towers instead of one

Everyone loves those towers now that they aren’t there any longer, but they got plenty of justified criticism while they were still standing. The original was architecture by committee, worse, by government committee, worse, by the combined committees of two governments. Quite frankly, the only thing you missed was a hell of a view. The buildings themselves were a wreck long before 9/11.

From a personal perspective I loved the original World Trade Center. The huge open plaza and the low level plaza buildings utterly dwarfed by the soaring twin towers. The huge lobbies like a cathedral and then it hits you, there's 110 stories on top of this. The new site doesn't quite make you fall back on your heel to take it all in, yet I understand why they've done it this way. I think the footprints reflecting with water and marking where the twin towers stood as hallowed ground is most appropriate.
I assume the site is too small, but I'd have loved to have seen, or to see the new Two WTC use the same design as One. Becoming it's twin and standing guard over ground zero. A symbol of defiance that creates a new life, but that never truly heals the scar in the skyline.

Totally agree. I thing they should have rebuilt the twins back off set from the memorial pools. Unfortunately the new one world trade really doesn’t have anywhere near the presence that the twins did. Don’t get me wrong it’s a beautiful building but it honestly looks just like any of the other glass clad towers they build today. Not to mention that it’s fundamentally a smaller building than either one of the towers and that there is only one.

I grew up on LI Ny and was 12 on 9/11. First time I had the guts to visit WTC was when I had a friend staying in the Club Quarters Hotel off of Atlanta and Liberty - we sat on the balcony having drinks that same week the Canadian fires were making a smog (the next day was the bad one with orange haze, June 2023). The site IS magnificent. The Oculus blew me away. I got sick the next day from inhaling the smoke… while at the WTC (ironic, huh).

I have feelings about the Twin Towers similar to yours. I'm an old ... whatever. I watched those towers get built. I grew up within visual distance of the construction. I marveled at them. In the day, they were the largest buildings in the world. They were more than symbolic, they were iconic.
As such, I am also glad that it worked out the way it did, a memorial and a new iconic Freedom Tower and a new World Trade Center complex. It took a long time, but Job Well Done.
The One World Trade Center is a nice building, I’m always in awe every time I pass by it, whether it be on a train, or walking past it. And also, I send my condolences 💐.
1 WTC is depressing and a sad reminder our country became irrationally paranoid and afraid ever since 2001. It’s base is a closed off concrete bunker, it’s curtain walls are just boring glass, it has less floors-the top are mostly mechanical, it’s observation deck is lower, the roof is only a parapet and the ‘spire’ is a skeletal antenna that helps the tower cheat and claim tallest building in the U.S. And it’s dumb symbolic height of 1,776ft is now a cap on buildings afraid of crossing it for silly touchy reasons. Meanwhile China has numerous buildings over 2,000ft but not in the U.S…
@@BarberJ95 The Twin Towers were just deathtraps with business and tourism slapped on them if we’re being honest, most people saw them as two more grey and bland office buildings being built in NYC.
The thought of having the reflecting pools represent the scar of what once was and have the names of the victims along the sides was a nice touch. Standing and looking down at the pools just hits you with so much emotion. Growing up, I remember using the temporary PATH station they had surrounded by all the construction going on whether it'd be for the Oculus/new Westfield or the Freedom Tower/One World Trade...seeing the complex now coming together and respected as it should be brings hope. And the Oculus is such a stunning piece of architecture inside and out.
Another touch I thought was just as nice that isn't mentioned here is at the WTC terminus of the E train. As you use the passageway to get to the Oculus from the E, there's a set of doors you pull open. One of these doors is spray-painted with "X MATF 1 / 9 13". "X MATF 1 / 9 13" was spray-painted by the Beverly, MA-based Urban Search and Rescue Massachusetts Task Force 1 who were on the site on September 13, 2001 (hence, 9 13). The X was in a box, and X was marked if an area was dangerous. As a condition for getting funding for the Oculus, under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, PATH had to preserve the pre-9/11 passageway's original design (the last surviving piece of the 1970s WTC station concourse). This passageway reopened in December 2016, but this door was kept with the spray-paint, and a glass case was put on both sides of it with a plaque talking about the door's significance.

I am also happy this memorial scheme was implemented. A close second would've been the tree-filled park over the footprints, perhaps drawing memory even further back to the island's pristine state long before today's megacity. Also, I think there would be a powerful message of regeneration and timelessness of nature. As it is, the abstract and starkly beautiful reflecting pools that drown out surrounding noise are as sensitive and inspired as anything ever regarded in reverence and respect.

I personally don't like it. I think it looks ugly and totally out of place. First time I seen it I was like WTF is that 💩. Not a fan whatsoever of what they've came up with and done with the area.
I recently visited the site and I was absolutely stunned by every aspect of the site, particularly the Oculus station. It is a truly unique and iconic landmark in its own right, does well to indicate progress and is stunningly beautiful in person.

I’m not sure if it’s cause I was only a baby when the twin towers were still here but personally I’ve always thought the freedom tower design we have is pretty great. To me it’s a super simple design, yet it conveys the message of two towers combined into one. A lot of the designs were great though. I’ve also been to the memorial/museum, it’s beautiful and gut wrenching.
If either design were simple, it would have been the original WTC. It was literally two rectangles

I think it's very pretty too, and the entire memorial site, pools, and museum use negative space to really make you feel the loss...

I've read so much about the original WTC complex, the development of all the different new buildings, and I go and visit the memorial site every week to take it all in, and this video covered everything about everything. Having visited the site, I’m really glad the way they rebuilt the area, specially the infinite pools and the museum. It’s very emotional and a perfect tribute to the lives lost that day. The new tower is very iconic too, I can’t imagine it being any different as it became a symbol to NYC.

I’ve been to the memorial of Ground Zero in summer 2015 as a 16 yr old from Louisiana and I haven’t been since but I would love to go back and see how everything has been completed so far since I’m now the age of 24!

Your not the one paying 10 million a month to rent a rubble heap. I don’t see how waiting years is going to honor the victims, the way to honor the victims is to take actions that would prevent something like that from happening again. If the public wants to have wait to build something they should not expect a individual to bear the burden of their decision. It would be like if someone crashes into your house during a party and kills some people, you want to rebuild your house as quickly as possible but the victim’s families are preventing it. If the victims families want to have that type of decision they should provide the occupants of the house somewhere else to live.

What seems unique about the ground Zero for me is that compared to other areas of the New York, that very area (literally) stands out from the rest. In my perspective, New York is gritty, old, and monochromatic yet Ground Zero has a futuristic and bright ambience that the rest of the city doesn't have. It catches the eye of the viewer while being the most significant part of the city.

I'm heavily disgusted by Larry Silverstein's position to not get into an agreement for such a long period and force the NY Ports Authority to rebuild office space so revenue is coming back. If there is one place on earth where it's not the most important thing to earn money, than it's places of fates. Of course it's not optimal to have a lack of revenue when you need them, but i'm sure that Larry Silverstein could've managed this without having such an infantile urge to get the same things as before.

I've only been to that mall once and it was a field trip passing through it all. I remember it was like 3 or 5 floors of retail space. So many things destroyed and have not been replaced so far.

Visited grund zero when i was 14. I Vividly remember the firefighters memorial, just hit different, knowing they without hesitation went into the crumbling tower to save as many they could. True hero's. Shall they never be forgotten
I've always been torn between rebuilding the towers or making the memorial site. I kinda think they should have merged the 2 somehow. Maybe make a memorial within the ground floor or build the towers back but in line with the memorial to preserve the skyline without building on top of where the original towers were. Idk I feel like the absence in the skyline would be a more painful reminder to the victims' families than seeing the towers back in place
growing up in new york state a few counties away from NYC in the early 2000s, the freedom tower means a lot to me. not only because of how the attack shaped america, but how it impacted my community. i know people who were working and living in the city at the time, but i also know people who lost loved ones in 9/11. i’ve visited the city countless times, and it is truly one of my favorite places on earth. but i’ve never made it ground zero. in exactly one month, i’ll be moving to manhattan for college. for the first time ever, i’ll be in the city on september 11th. but i also plan on visiting the memorial i’ve somehow never been to. despite everything, i think the final design was the perfect choice.
I’m from Massapequa Park. We lost a lot of people that day. Not only that we lost people in the coming years as a result of cancers from the low air quality following the attacks.

I would think so given that it the billions of dollars that were being investigated with the Clinton’s were on the same floor the plane happen to strike. So it’s convenient that it feels lively instead of a real historical sight where actual unplanned deaths happened
I remember as a kid, the view of the towers around Exit 15 on the NJ turnpike, looking back it was an optical illusion… but in comparison to NYC skyline and Empire Stage Building which is mid town…. The towers looked so almost ridiculously massive, awe inspiring.

This was such an eye-opening video to watch. I really appreciate the graphics that demonstrated everything so well. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes of these projects that you only really hear about if you really closely follow the events. I think the design that was ultimately decided upon is perfect. I also really like that it wasn't all planned and constructed at once. I haven't been there yet but am definitely planning to go as soon as I can.

The Irish Hunger Memorial's construction began in March 2001, and despite 9/11, it was completed and dedicated the next year in July. Dedicated to spreading awareness about the many lives lost due to the Great Famine/An Gorta Mór as well as those who chose to emigrate to the US to start new lives. It features not only labeled stones from every Irish county as well as native Irish plants but also an actual 19th century cottage from Attymass in County Mayo that was abandoned in the 1960s as the family who lived there all left for the US.

This is a very well made video for various reasons. I just visited the site this week after last being there back in 2002 about 8 months after the attack. It was an emotional visit and the memorial is beautiful. I also very much like the design of the new WTC tower 1. Thank you for this.

I’m not from New York, I wasn’t alive before or during 9/11 - I can still place the towers within pictures of the NY skyline without them. The cultural impact of the towers themselves and the subsequent attack is insane.
