    Yes, an all double decker will be stunning.

    If you’re gonna make a whole train, I think it would look cool if the observation part of it continuous into the next carriage. So the entire train is taller besides the engine and first passenger cars to start the slope of the observation deck

      A real life solution but much less interesting for LEGO in my mind. The middle carriages look a bit too boxy for my tastes!

      I was mildly infuriated that Robin didn't do that because that's what most train do in real life.

      It took a lot of work. I agree the base train is a little lacking, but all fixed now!

    The roofline is a masterpiece. Helicopter windows work so well it's like they were purpose built for the carriage.
    Work of art. Fantastic to see, and see how it was done.

      Thanks. I was also really happy with the middle line tiled section. That looks good too!

  • @mybobize

    Since the lowered train bases look to be split, it would be fun to see one car where it is extended length from the others. Maybe by putting a larger plate in between the two split bases.

    By removing the lower plate under the lower window you could continue the lime stripe, that is how I have been planning on doing it for whenever I get the set.

    • @RobinHoodBricks
      @RobinHoodBricks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The window is too low then, in my opinion, for the people inside. I tried it on LDD. Sadly the new base is two plates thick which doesn't help!

    I think this is a great modification for a more 'adult' version of this train. Having real opening doors is great for play but they were a bit clunky and out of place - wide middle doors are normally used on trains that have a lot of stops, not high speed trains with long 'noses'. The doors you have put on remind me of old HST train doors (complete with big handle on the outside!).
    The middle panel is great as well though I thought you were going to put a destination sticker on (maybe a possibility if you can find a suitable one for a lime background, or make it look like a screen that could show information about where the train is going?)
    The other suggestion that I have is to try to put one pair of wider doors in so that there's a suggestion of a wheelchair accessible section on the train, possibly at one end? I think the inclusion by Lego of more 'disabled access' and minifigures representing disabled people is great and I challenge you to incorporate that when you can too.

  • @andrewfield176
    @andrewfield176 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The new double-decker carriages elevate this train to new heights. They look great and provide a much smarter overall style.
    When it was going around with both new carriages on, I got a sense of a surfer scene - once it got up to speed do those clever curved side panels maybe resemble a Lego surfboard 🏄? Regardless, it is a strong, distinct look that works really well.
    As you’re going for a ‘full dome train’ (technical term) is there any way you could add a half dome or similar to the back of the train itself? That would then mean every part of your amazing new train has some double-deckerness!

    • @RobinHoodBricks
      @RobinHoodBricks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The loco is a bit short for up and down on its roof. It could go up but then the carriages would have to start up, which might be dull.
      I like what you did there with the double decker "elevating" this to the "new heights". Very good!

They are commonly used for long cross country travel in the United States but are also used on the Amtrak Surfliner on the west coast along the beach routes as more of a commuter train.

    Maybe switch the black strips above the windows on the lower level to lime to continue the the line with a bit of jog in it? I dig the side logo. I think the remade train car with the brick built doors looks better than the set one. Those dark windows definitely want brightly colored minifigs to show thru them. Maybe for the dining car we could do a three stooges style scene with clowns throwing pies at each other- or work some of the more difficult minifigs like the video animal suits into there.

  • @Luke1003
    @Luke1003 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    First thing first... absolute improvement and far better looking than Legos own design, and by far the best looking dome carriage you have not saying the previous ones aren't great, they are great.
    Individually as a dome carriage I love this design, putting one side by side and imaging a full train of it... I can't make my mind up if it will look good or not.
    Now I'm no trainiac (I had to look these up) but the design looks like a version of the Canadian Go Transit train with the up down motion of the roof. Which looks good, but it is not a "high speed" train.
    As I see others have commented, high speed double decker (or BiLevel) trains would be more streamlined like the French TGV train where the locomotive slopes up to the roof, or a slope at the end of the locomotive, or the beginning of the carriages and the roof continues this height till the end and slopes back down. As this train is a "high speed" train my instinct would be to adopt one of the three options.
    That all being said, I am torn as I do like the carriage design as is but struggle with the realism of it for a high speed train. But at the end of the day Lego is about having fun and building what you want so Robin if you like it as is then stick with that. Don't let us tell you what to do. We'll support your decisions all the way.

    • @RobinHoodBricks
      @RobinHoodBricks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for that. I'm no trainiac either. This kinda grew out of what I'd done before. Definitely not trying to do a bilevel as they look a bit boring to me. I kinda like the lumpy look repeating. Let's get the whole train lumpy, see how it looks, and take it from there!

    Great video and I like the fact that the entire train will be double decker (apart from the power cars). I like it when trains have more consistent coach formations, like all single decker or all double decker. Also the doors look like manual slam doors which is quite funny for a modern high speed train. The only high speed train that had slam doors that I'm aware of is the 46-year old diesel-electric powered HST

    • @RobinHoodBricks
      @RobinHoodBricks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So they'd need a button? They kinda look weird in LEGO with no handle, partially because it orientates us as to which side opens. Oh, I just had an idea!

    Had this been the set from the start you know I it might be something I'd want to buy (had I not moved to 5 wide track). If you considering doing an entire train with 2 levels I would suggest making the roof flat and the engine the same height has the second story - that's typically how most high speed trains do it if they have 2 levels.

    • @RobinHoodBricks
      @RobinHoodBricks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @jouebien
      @jouebien 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RobinHoodBricks There has existed a way to get 4.5V and 12V track to form a 5 wide loop of track but no way to do points from what I have seen. The 5 wide track as a 3D print part has only been a thing for a few months as part of my High Iron Bricks open source intuitive. I've moved to modelling 3foot 6 inch Queensland Rail narrow gauge which works out close to 5 wide track (there is about 3.5 studs between the rails). The intuitive has a bunch of stuff from 6 and 5 wide track, to ball bearing wheel sets for 6 and 5 wide track, to curved points to mini enclosures for the powered up hub. At the moment it's verry much a BYO 3D printer as I don't have the facilities to produce in large quantities. You can find it the models and more info at cults3d.com/en/users/HighIronBricks/creations if it's something your interested in playing with DM and I'll see if I can put together a set of loaner pars.

    Actually I think it's still to black. and I did like the double door in the center, it's a shame it doesn't fit the platform, and therefore I understand the change. but Modern trains sometimes have doors there (and at the ends) to allow easier access to wheel chairs, bicicles, bby carriages and the like.
    for an alternative trainbuild, you might want to have alook at the dutch "koploper" train design.

    I think you should absolutely do an entire double decker train! It's gorgeous! You did a really great job! Maybe you should try to do like a sleeping or a buffet one just to make it a bit different! ❤️❤️❤️ Love this, you really made it shine👍
    Edit: if you do the second end maybe you could try to make it a like, half-passenger locomotive like you did on the old train, I really liked it and I think this could be even cooler with that! ❤️(idk if it's possible for it to be cooler than this tho😂)

    As you were building the doors (I like the inset feature), I was thinking about how British trains have doors that are in a contrasting colour for those with limited sight. Robin, in the Netherlands we have railcars, which are also double-decker. Perhaps that is also something for this train. And you could remove 1 white 1 x 10 under the windows and then replace it with a lime above the windows. So that the Lime line continues from front to back.

    • @RobinHoodBricks
      @RobinHoodBricks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1
