this is an excellent review. Most people go with the more expensive & don't mention the cheaper ones for beginners. It's good to see them all side by side. Art Spectrum were the first cheaper pastels I found with bright vibrant colors but they are very hard. My first better pastels were Nupastels. I recently got Rembrandt darks & a Sennelier white, & 2 types of Mungyeo Gallery pastels. The paper is very important. I thought I hated pastels because I used cheap pastels on bad paper, but I'm giving them another chance.

You need to change the angle of the camera so we can see what you are putting on the paper. As it is we pretty much just see the back of your hand.

Thank you for your review of each brand. I do wish I could have seen some close ups of each one laid down on the paper, but I also really appreciate your feedback on each brand too. It was helpful for me. Thanks! What do you think of Mungyo brand for a starter set?

Using a sanded paper will change your life! Totally! Even a fine-grit sandpaper from Home Depot. No kidding.

Hi. I'm looking for a super fine and soft pastel. I've tried Rembrandt and Sennelier. Rembrandt is too hard and sometimes I can feel the sand in it. So compared to Sennelier, is Schmincke any better? And what about Unison ?

Blue Earth Pastels from Dakota Pastel is a square pastel that is very similar to Sennelier.

Like I have always said "use the right paper i.e. LuxArchival" and you will get the best results from ANY pastels you use.

It's unfortunate because pastels are very pricy, and you need quite a few to work with :(

      Nupastels are a dollar each

You can get away with a basic range of colours which can be blended to create more. Then you can add other colours as you can afford them.
And see if anyone in your area is selling off second hand art supplies like soft pastels because I've bought plenty of pre-owned art supplies and have had a great deal of fun using them. People often buy art supplies and then don’t enjoy them for one reason or another and try to get some of their money back so it’s worth checking out. All the best.
