Colour Wheel 101: First steps to master colour theory
Understanding the basic colour wheel, including its limitations, is a great first step to understanding colour mixing.
A store-purchased colour wheel shows three primaries, plus the secondaries and tertiary colours. It’s misleading though, so don’t expect to be able to mix the exact colours on the wheel - it’s a guide.
There are different colour wheels available in stores. I’ll share what is on mine and how you can use it when painting. I'm using acrylic paint but the same concepts can be used for any paint medium.

Is pyrrole red acrylic paint worth trying?
มุมมอง 161หลายเดือนก่อน
I’ve had a couple versions of pyrrole red in my pile of acrylic paint colours. When standing in the art store as an absolute beginner, both enticed me with their beautiful reds, each seeming to be a “classic” red. I’ve used them occasionally, but mostly relied on cadmium red and quinacridone magenta as my “warm” and “cool” reds. Now, I’m putting them to the test and seeing how they work and if ...
Cerulean blue and cerulean blue chromium acrylic - what’s the difference?

Choosing a green-leaning blue for your palette can be tricky. Do you go for the dark phthalos? Or the paler ceruleans? This blog post looks at cerulean blue and a similar colour: cerulean blue chromium. Both paints are a middle value - not overly dark or pale. Landscape artists particularly love them because they are the colour of the sky, almost straight from the tube. Both are a somewhat brig...
Titan buff and N8 neutral gray acrylic paint

Today I’m taking a closer look at two pale neutral acrylic paints - N8 neutral gray and titan buff. I’ve used titan buff quite extensively and have just recently added N8 neutral gray to my collection. Both are quite pale - they land at about 8 on a value scale from 1-10, with 1 being black and 10 being white. This means both are two steps darker than pure white. Either will be useful if you wa...
Learn to paint a strawberry in acrylics!

I love summertime because it’s berry season! I love strawberries so much and they’re fun to paint too. I’ll show you how to paint a strawberry in acrylics. Strawberries are a simple subject to paint because they’re kind of an oblong ball-ish shape on one end, that tapers to a rounded point on the other end. Just think of it as a larger round ball connected to a smaller round ball with a tapered...

As a aspiring graphic designer and one who just started learning, will this tool helpful ?
@@Yohaan_8 yes. Understanding the colour wheel can help you understand what colour combinations are pleasing. You might not need to understand colour mixing as much and you’ll also want to understand the additive colour wheel because that is the colour wheel that computer programs use (red, green and blue as the primaries which all mix to make white)
So, I use all of these. Mechanical pencils in .3, .5 and .7. I use those with leads that are nearly unbreakable in normal use. You have to get the ones that are very flexible. I also have several clutch pencils, which, they do also make in click advance styles. Some of the rotrings are. Also, I like koh-i-nors for 2mm and 5.6mm clutches. Talk about shading, it's like a magic marker of the pencil world. Check em out. There's this great pencil sharpener that has two holes for sharpening pencils, one does the wood and then the other does the lead, so you can choose how much lead you want out of the pencil without using a knife or a razor. And on the side there are two holes for lead sharpening for clutch pencils. I love it. It's called the automatic Long Point. But be careful I think only the blue one has the lead pointers included. Oh also it comes with good German blades for the pencil sharpeners and it comes with two extra blades stored inside the pencil sharpener. And it's this little pocketable awesome sharpener and it's cheap! Or use the Mitsubishi lead pointer it's very awesome and very small. I do like The Staedtler because it has the two different options for a normal point and then the obscenely sharp stab you through your hand point.
I use 0.5 and 0.7 pencils for several hours every day and never get the lead breaking. My use case is a bit different because I use them for mathematics, but still. I do also really enjoy using clutch pencils. I have a thirty year old Staedtler like yours and a couple of others (Rotring and Kaweco). I don’t really have a good excuse for owning six expensive pencils but I just enjoy using them.
Great video! If you’re not planning to use it for a few days is it best to let the sponge and paper dry up?
@@bsdbryn I find it’s okay for at least a week but if I don’t use it for a couple weeks, I get pools of water condensation on the inside. Use that timing as my rule of thumb as to whether I leave it or clean and dry it.
Thank you! What all does a cleaning consist of? Removing excess paint from paper and sponge?
@ yes, and letting it dry
Thanks for the feedback!
2 hues
Thank you - this is very helpful!. I was debating whether I’d find zinc white useful. I enjoy transparent colours and now understand what a gem it can be in the right circumstances.
@@vwood2 I’m learning more and more as I use it. Zinc white can be great for painting water or plants with a transparent glow of light
@ Neat - I can see how it would work better than an opaque. I’ve been thinking about mist over water. Thanks for the tip :)
Thank you! I couldnt think of any reason for the two holes and my leads kept breaking. Now I'm all set!
I LOVE this sharpener. I can get needle sharp points.
I thought you would explain the different mediums for acrylic paint.
@@Coco-ne5ix that’s an entire topic on its own and a great idea for future videos - thanks!
Very helpful, thank you!
cobalt blue mixes brings vibrancy no other blues can achieve.
What about mounted Lino blocks? I have considered a 1x4 frame around with the block in the middle but I’m concerned about accuracy with more variables like that
I haven't used mounted Lino blocks in a while because they don't fit in my press. They have slightly taller pins, which might help with thicker mounted blocks.
I’m using I’m using 2b lead and it just keeps breaking
I've never had that happen. Are you using the 2mm thick lead? How hard are you pressing while sharpening? It doesn't really need much pressure.
I really like this idea. I invest too much emotion in my paintings starting out and I think this will help me practice ideas without too much attachment. Thanks for sharing.
Super useful, thanks!❤
Just what I was lekking for...thank you
Just found your channel!! Love it! Keep up the good work. I especially love the pigment comparisons. Thank you for sharing your hard work!
Excellent work. Please keep showing comparisons of various colours
I wished you had used real Alizarin Crimson. Most Alizarin Crimson "hues" contain a quinacridone (magenta, red, rose, etc.) as its base (or sometimes, as the only pigment).
Thats been really helpful, thank you!
Actually, the Staedler Mars does have a lead sharpener on the top… it’s the hole on the top of the button. It’s not on the inside hole like other lead pointers, it’s on the outside. It won’t get as sharp as your lead sharpener you bought, but it works good enough. Only downside is when you finish, you should dump the graphite out of the cap.
@@CodyCannon11 thanks for sharing! I tested it out and it’s a bit messy for at home while I have the external sharpener but will be great for when travelling
@@theweekendbeckons9439 I’m glad it worked out for you. Happy drawing!
Thank you very much for this mixing series. It’s very helpful ❤
thank you for the comparison Have not found much about Zinc-White.😊
Thank you for your video. Just wondering if you have come across an acrylic 'warm' grey paint. If you have, what brand and color name is it please?
Not exactly. You could try a raw umber, which is an inexpensive paint available from most paint companies.. It's definitely a brown but could be considered towards a greyed-out brown. You could also add a touch of raw umber or an orangey-yellow (like a cadmium yellow medium) to a grey to warm it up a touch.
Vibram are a con I had continental much better material and lasted me 9 years.

Thank you for showing me how to use this one. I literally went and bought and old vintage point sharpener because I thought these ones were garbage that never worked.
Apparently the first number relates to the depth, with 1 being flat and 15 being deep. The second number is the max witdth of the cutting face in mm.
Hello, thank you so much for amazing video! Colors from Golden so beautiful and more deep, rich and bright. Instead of a lot colors better buy this set of colors. Which Cadmium Yellow do you use - light, medium or medium nue?
I use cadmium medium, usually the cadmium-free version from liquitex but the true version from Golden is very nice.

Hi! Can I use this recipe fir mixed berries ?
I don't know if it would work. I tried with sour cherries, thinking that they'd be sour enough but it didn't work. It was very sweet and cloying. Raspberries have just the right level of sourness for this recipe.
Awesome Video Thanks! What happens when the eraser gets dried? can It be fixed?
@@raynazario6495 I’ve never had it dry out. Maybe after decades, but in that case, I might just toss it and get a new one.
very good presentation. thank you.
INSTRUCTIONS that came with Sta-Wet : 1-SOAK - just one piece- of the white paper sheets in HOT TAP WATER. (I fill up my clean sink about 1-2 inches of hot water to do this) OR put piece of white paper in a microwave safe bowl & microwave 3-5min or until water boils. 2- YELLOW SPONGE is to be SOAKED in cold water & wring out 1/2 of the water of sponge. 3- Place the SPONGE in first, smooth side up, then your paper. Use a paper towel to wipe off excess water. If it’s the 1st time using sponge- rinse it thoroughly under RUNNING water. DARK COLORS sometime bleed so FYI CLEAN UP- simply rinse out the sponge, you can do the same with the paper. Doesn’t have to be perfect! Especially if you’re using good quality paints. ❤
As I was standing literally 1 hour ago in front of the store shelf and tried to guess, which white I need, I ended up buying neither, but now I know that I should probably head back and buy Titanium white. Thank you so much for your video and it couldn't come on more right time. :D
Should I scrape the paint that dried off then soak it I only used it once so far. But paint is drying so I can scrape off paint and reuse the same side of paper or flip paper
@@brandyabdelaziz4430 you can scrape off the paint and then wipe clean with a paper towel. If I find it’s drying, spritz it with water to keep it from drying
Is there not a sharpener in the top section? There is on my 2mm pencils.
Not on the pencils themselves! That would be very handy.
