    Thanks so much for this. I love the few Unison pastels that I have, but a large set contains so many colors I won't use, especially since I have a set of Richeson sticks in "louder" colors. A collection of smaller Unison sets ends up costing more, though, for less pastels. The Jackson pastels are so much more affordable for someone like me. This video was very helpful!

    Wow fantastic video. I recently became disabled and I've taken up drawing. Last time I did any Art was 47yrs ago at school. I only used water colour paint then but I've been given some soft pastels and this video made alot of sense to me regarding how hard and soft the pastels are and when to put down. Thank you for this

      If you were going to get into pastels and you have experience with watercolor, I believe you would absolutely love pastel pans. They are the best of both worlds and you can use them to do your underpainting. I like them because I can blend them unlike the stick soft pastels. The pastel pans blend like a paint. I know really weird, huh?😊 I wish you the best rediscovering your journey through Art. I became permanently disabled four years ago from a spinal injury. The biggest key is patience and that goes for all avenues, including your art. I wish you the best.

    Thank you for your very useful video. Pastels' brands like Schmincke and Unison are very expensive and I have already noticed the jackson's one. Howewer, would you say that these pastels are so bright than Schmincke or Unison pastels ?

  • @SUSSDUE
    @SUSSDUE 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Thank you for the video. But I have to say that comparing these to Unisons are not doing Unisons any favour. I bought three sets of Jacksons just because of favorable reviews and I have to say I am very dissapointed. They are of a funny ” greasy” formulation. Difficult to apply in thin smooth layers, they sort of clump together. The only paper they behave fairly ok on is Pastelmat, on Mi Teontes Touch and Mi Teintes they were awful. I tried them as a first layer and then unisons on top, hopeless, the fat underlayer these pastels give, even when trying to apply them thinly, made it impossible for the unisons to grab hold and they just skipped. So I am very dissapointed. In art material price really is a guide to quality and I just learnt that the hard way! So my advice is to buy more expensive brands and fewer pastels to get some satisfaction out of pastel painting. But avoid the Jacksons pastels!

    Is there a difference in the quality of the pigment in the soft vs harder brand’s and if so wouldn’t you want the highest quality pigment even if it is very soft and take that into account through the level of pressure that you apply?

    Both Jacksons and Jaxell are made by Mungyo and exactly the same as their original Mungyo "soft pastel" (square) and "handmade" product lines. The handmade ones are nice, but the pigments are pretty cheap and many colors are fading, almost all violets and many mixes (even burnt sienna) use PV3 which will fade eventually. I prefer to hand-pick the colors that I buy from Mungyo rather than buying the sets with many fading colours. Other than that, MDS sheets show that the pigment ratio in the handmade variety isn't bad (25% compared to 5% in the square shaped ones, and 30-50% in sennelier).

    Been using many brands since I started...my favorites are Unison as they cover so well,the pigments is really really rich..but when I bought my first set 10 yrs ago they were bigger in size. So now they keep on rising the price and on the other hand the pastels are visibly smaller and that's something I dont like. Last year I bought a set of 14 Jacksons and considering that they are 100% cheaper and basically bigger in size than the Unison I from now on will use them for the underpainting and other parts...the Unison thing went out of hand imo....right now Im placing my new order to Jacksons Art Supplies and Im searchin for the darkest blue out of the Jacksons Soft Pastels set..

    Hi Jason, thanks for sharing and great insights as always I was just wondering if you would recommend getting these or pan pastels ? In your pan pastels review I got the impresions they are more long lasting and practical to use (knife shapes and sponges) so if given the choice to pick an 80 set for a little less than what would be a similar quantity of Jackson's , which one would you chose ? Or perhaps would you recommend me(new to pastel media) mix both ??? Greetings and thanks in advance :)

  • @lindataylor7757
    @lindataylor7757 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It might be worth checking what pigments are used in the different brands, by looking at the pigment codes, if that information is available. Some pigments are more stable and lighfast than others and some pastels are made with cheaper pigments which might not be very durable.This might not matter too much if you are just starting out, or practising, but it could matter if you want your work to last. Only some companies give this information about the pigments used in their product and even then sometimes you have to hunt for it online. Just saying they use the "best" pigments doesn't mean anything. Artists' paints usually have the pigment codes on the individual tubes or pans, and on their colour charts, so why not on all artists' pastels, especially on the really expensive ones.

    As a general rule, I'm not buying most of the high end soft pastels, because the pricing is so ridiculously high it makes it inherently prohibitive to maintain replacing supplies when you run out. That's just bad marketing making them unable to cater to a wider audience who could benefit from their products. Even if you left these at these insane prices, you could produce a middle ground product to get people in the door, or cater to people with a generally smaller budget.
    Rant aside, I already own a 90 set of Rembrandt's (which is the most I'll ever likely spend on a pastel set at over 200 dollars) but some of these like the Koh-I-Noor might be worth looking into. Part of my problem with the more expensive pastel papers is they seem to favor using softer pastels to get the best work, and those are definitely the most expensive. I've heard decent things about the Mungyo sets which I may also try, but for the moment, sanded paper is a better fit for me, and since I use more pastel pencil than soft pastel, I'm good for now.
    This is helpful, and I do look enjoy your videos.
