    Paul makes a trip to the Netherlands to see the progress on the build of Distant Shores IV, our new custom aluminum Enksail Orion 49 cruising sailboat. While he is there, Paul attends METStrade, the annual Marine Equipment Trade Show in Amsterdam, to speak to suppliers and learn more about the options we are considering for the boat.
    At the show, he meets up with a group of other sailing TH-camrs, who are either experienced Arctic sailors or metal boat owners or both. Later, this fun-loving group drive up to the Gebroeders van Enkhuizen Shipyard in Makkum to give their thoughts on whether Distant Shores IV will be a good Arctic cruising boat or not, based on their experiences. Lots of good info here!

    From a construction perspective, I'd suggest spray foam insulation against both the aluminum hull skin as well as all ribs and stringers. It's okay to place fuel next to the skin, but not water, as sea water can easily fall well below the freezing temperature of fresh water. Thermally isolate the interior, then install interior water tanks, as well as all control lines, wiring, ducting and plumbing.
    Just my two cents.
    Oh, and double-pane portals with thermally isolating structures.

    The time line to sail back for Norway to the UK in November is a biggest challenge. Dan and Kika are right when to leave for the north but sailing the North Sea in winter can be havoc. Be prepared to hunker down at a good spot for longer periods.

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree it will a matter of waiting until there is a good weather window. We did the same when we left UK (Falmouth) in late-November to sail across Biscay to Spain back in 2008. A good window came and we grabbed it :-)

    Best wishes on the launch. I would have thought 700l was not a huge amount of fuel but I guess it depends on sailing plans in the ice and desired time off grid.

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi James! I think 700L should be good but you're right to be thinking of more difficult access in case of ice cutting us off! Hope the cat project is going well! Hugs to you both!

  • @michaeldobson8859
    @michaeldobson8859 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would have thought it would have been more efficient to install the interior prior to installing the deck on the hull structure. It must take many more man hours to move the interior into the inside of the boat rather than lower it into the boat. Plus there is also access questions from a vertical install (drop in) verses how to navigate interior sections into a space.

    What a nice video again, and, seeing Uma here too. As to being on watch, e.g. for "ice" has anybody ever tried to mount a depth sounder horizontally under water on the bow of a ship as an instrument to be warned of big things that you might need to avoid bumping into?

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you enjoyed it JP!
      I looked into forward looking sonar many years ago for exploring in shallow waters. Back then it wasn't very effective especially for the very shallow waters (less than 6 feet) that we needed. I'd love to hear from anyone who has had any luck with forward scan sonar to find ice.

    • @jpdj2715
      @jpdj2715 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DistantShoresTV - I feel we have to break this down into two: (a) shallow waters and (b) forward looking elsewhere. I would think that (a) your sonar pulses in shallow waters, fired forward, will not reflect back in a usable way, just because of the angles between water surface and bottom. This may "look" like a long triangular cross section and reflect nothing back.
      If you have a chance to look at a few videos of the Adventures with Purpose YT channel, then you can see what sonar can do.
      This is a specialised "volunteer" dive team travelling the USA to specifically scan water bodies around locations where a person went missing. What they see on their computer displays from their sonar is almost eerie and would be called photographic if a bit better. A car on the bottom of a lake, a school of fish, tree trunks. They started with the noble idea to clean waters from car wrecks and now they have become an authority for cold cases revolving around cars intentionally or accidentally driven into a body of water - with people in them.
      They do an excellent job on the scales of humanitarian help.
      My point here is that the kind of sonar they use has an extremely detailed resolution and precision. It may be too expensive for your use case - I simply don't know what this technology costs and of course not what it would be worth to you. It would certainly work horizontally too, as obstacle detection. If it could deal with shallow waters remains to be seen. Whales, containers, ice - I think it will see that effortlessly.

    I'm curious how aluminum boats are in the tropics. Do the decks get too hot to sit on or touch? The hull is immersed in water, so I assume that helps dissipate heat somewhat.

    I really really really hope that you will not do what You said in the programme.
    that you will go straight from the Netherlands to Norway.
    because you will really miss something incredibly beautiful.
    if you want to do it the (right way) with the maximum amount of enjoyment and beautiful scenery.
    I would personally recommend go through Denmark and go up the coast of east side of Denmark.
    and then cross to Sweden and then start your journey around the coast of Norway.
    the part between Germany and Denmark and going up the Danish coast is really amazing.
    a lot of good harbours and beautiful places to go lie on anchor it is really something that is not explored enough.
    and it is not Known enough.
    it would even be better if you would go straight up to Finland and spend some time there. because it is amazing and pretty much no (sailing channel) has done it.
