    This is without a doubt the most dangerous wood burning stove that I have ever tested and I do not recommend it!
    This is my review of the VINIDA Survival Stove!
    ..
    Agenda Free Link : www.amazon.com...
    Price : $20 on Amazon
    Weight Stove : 7.4oz
    Weight of Storage Bag : .5oz
    Measurements Standing : 8” x 4.5” wide
    Measurements Broken Down : 4” x 4.5” wide
    Materials : Stainless Steel
    Stove Features :
    Stainless steel copy of the Toaks Titanium wood stove which costs $45.
    Gasifier Stove
    4 piece system
    Stove Review Pros :
    Not difficult to lite and get doing.
    Efficient?
    Smoke?
    Easy to use
    Fun as well.
    Reasonable size; not the smallest when it comes to gasifier stoves
    Gasification process can begin quickly but it will depend on the dryness of your materials.
    I’ve had no issues in terms of quality with the storage bag
    Pot supports are good and offer a stable platform.
    Fuel is free
    No warping so far with my testing.
    Large feeding port
    Stove Review Cons :
    Quality isn’t impressive even for the money.
    Has lots of sharp jagged edges which could possible cut you. There are some minor dents in the material around the edges.
    Be careful what you place this on as it could scratch table surfaces and even rip fabric. It should be mentioned that this is a common complaint with this stove.
    Metal is thin but haven’t had any issues with use.
    Arrived in a state of filth; the stove was covered in black metal dust.
    Storage bag quality is….just ok and looks like it could begin coming unraveling at any moment.
    No instructions included; for those who have never used a stove like this, it could be confusing.
    Holes in the bottom are WAY to large; coals, burning sticks/twigs will fall through onto the ground.
    Also because of this, you can kill grass that is below the stove and can causes external fires easily.
    This is a natural aspect of all wood burning stoves; it takes work and it takes time. Do you want to collect fuel and feed the stove; that is up to you. Such stoves are much slower to use than your average canister stove and that needs to be considered; for myself, when I am on the trail, there are times where I want to wake up, pack up, boil water for coffee and go but that isn’t going to happen with such a stove. You will have to collect unless you did so previously and take time feeding the stove until your water is ready to go.
    Another con for such stoves is that efficiency will vary depending on numerous factors; you aren’t guaranteed to boil water at a certain time nor will you have a consistent level of heat throughout your cooking experience. It can be difficult to achieve a consistent hot flame.
    While the stove is efficient it will leave your pot very dirty and you need to be prepared for storing this in your pack.
    You could always do the soap and water treatment trick for easier cleanup but you are making the pot slick which doesn’t bode well with an already slick system.
    In windy situations, a wind screen is recommended as performance of the stove will be hindered in adverse conditions.
    I mentioned in the pros that fuel is free but there is something that you need to consider; if you are taking this to heavily trafficked area finding fuel can be a problem. Some areas are going literally be picked clean so make sure to plan accordingly.
    Summary :
    If you have followed the channel for a while, you know that I generally like type of gasifier stoves; their designs are interesting and in most cases their quality is good.
    With this one, the quality misses the mark even though the design isn’t bad at all. Because of the quality issues and a potential to get cut, rip clothing and scratch/damage surfaces, and cause external fires, I would advise skipping this stove. For the money, there are better gasifier stoves out there.
    Good for backpacking, camping, kayaking trips and even emergency use. Not well used for long distance hikers or those who want to go light and quick. Those in wet environments may not want to consider a different stove type.
    Side Note :
    Taking a look at sites which analyze Amazon Reviews, one such sites stated that around 40% of the reviews were fake on Amazon and that deception was likely. They also stated that once the fake reviews were removed, it was a 2.5 star product instead of a 4.5 star product.

      It’s not California. You have to work hard to get a forest fire going around here. Unless it’s in the middle of a drought. Which this year certainly has not been. That little bit that escaped would’ve burned out on its own in a few more inches. Still a dangerous stove for sure. But his demonstration of it certainly was not.

  • @stewartrv

    I have a similar stove from Lixada and have been very pleased with it. What I recommend is taking a bigger diameter log (I used a silky saw to cut one) about the same height as the loading port, then split it so you can have the wood inside vertically and top light it. That allowed me to avoid loads of black smoke it ran a little cooler and also went for more than 1 hour on that single load. If you have a nice dutch oven or a cast iron frying pan it can be great. Certainly easier and quicker than making an open fire.

    • @jeffwells641
      @jeffwells641 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I second this. If you're getting a lot of smoke and soot in a gasifier stove that means you're not actually burning the extra gasses coming off the wood. Those gasses ignite and burn most all of the extra carbon in normal operation. The key is that extra air must be drawn over the top of fuel to the hottest part of the fire so it can ignite all those extra gasses and particles that don't burn in the initial phase of the burn.
      This design is not great, but the way you're supposed to run these is to keep the fuel below that lower set of interior holes. So it LOOKS like it has a huge fuel reservoir, but it's actually only like 3-4 inches deep, which is the same as most other gasifier camp stoves.. That top section with the cutout for adding fuel is meant to be kept clear, not filled with fuel. It's supposed to give you access to the reservoir below, not become part of the reservoir itself. This is meant as a feature, because other gasifier stoves require you to lift your pot in order to add fuel.
      The best way to run these is as you described: relatively thick pieces (maybe 1/2 inch to 1 inch diameter) maybe 3 inches long. Pack them in relatively tight, and it should burn pretty clean and hot for quite a while.

  • @V8DV
    @V8DV 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I noticed most of these stoves have somewhat open vents at the bottom. They all risk dropping embers out of the bottom. But my adhd engineer brain tells me maybe a solution would be to drop a disk of stainless mesh in the bottom of the fire cup? The size mesh they use as flash arrestors in gas cans. It's fairly cheap and can be cut really easily. And it shouldn't affect the air flow from the bottom too badly.
    I might be wrong but any feedback on that would be appreciated.

    Just bought one of these... wish I had seen your video first! Planning to try it out next month. The other downside is that it is extremely loud, with the metal pieces rattling around in the bag with the slightest movement. I'll probably wrap all the parts in newspaper (fire tinder) to quiet things down during transport.

  • @udornyc

    0:50 seconds into the vid... if that big closure hole is an issue, just put the cooker "upside down" into the netbag... or pull the bag from top to bottom and close it on the opposite side. Nothing would fall out then.
    I use different stove system for winter and high altitude hiking/mountaineering, but that "problem" looked pretty obvious to me. Well, you may give that remedy during the remaining 11 minutes... just sayin'... :)

  • @roliver7773
    @roliver7773 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's got problems for sure, but some are borderline. The "hole in the bag is too big" (turn it upside down) and "it's noisy" (stuff it with coffee packets or a bandana to clean it) and when they invent "sootless" wood let us know. No such thing as a clean wood stove. Maybe cleaner but not clean. Your choice of fuel is important if less soot is the goal. Split some out instead of burning little sticks. Fire hazard? You should have cleared the area around the rock. That's building fire 101 (takes 30 seconds). A piece of emery cloth and five minutes to knock off the sharp edges. A lot of your criticism is legit, but a few are nitpicky. Thanks, and I always enjoy your videos! Don't take this wrong.

      @@jeffreywhitaker5154 In a nutshell, a gasifying wood stove has a double walled burn chamber, creating a gap between the 2 walls. This gap then has vent holes on the bottom to allow air to flow up and out near the top, introducing a second oxygen source. This extra flow of oxygen near the top combined with the heat in the burn chamber allows the pyrolyzed gases that are given off by the burning wood (which normally just float off into the atmosphere, mainly as smoke) to ignite causing a secondary burn. This results in a more efficient, cleaner burn. An example is attached. th-cam.com/video/iGZbplZogG8/w-d-xo.html

    I do feel I have to share that using a identical model from Lixada, I had virtually no smoke, absolutely no dropping ashes, no burnt ground patches, zero flying sparks, no soot in the oven and very little soot on the pot. This might be related to how the fuel is supplied. That said, the burning itself felt completely clean and save, with my only issues being the tall rickety construction (fixed by using two tentpoles), the pot holders and the horrible machining (fixed by sanding the holes down with a dremel).

    Let me be the devils advocate for this design. I have an XMund Stove which is exact copy of this one. The thing I love about that construction design and made me buy one of those is a reservoir capacity and big feed window, I can put sticks when I cover the top with kettle. The pros you mentioned about, the fast heating and boiling, is definitely a thing. I have even set up a small campfire in this stove and grilled sausages on a stick as the flames go very high. Cons- it burns out really fast so, as you pointed out, I need to add woods frequently. I will not refer to the poor finish and quality of this stove as my XMund is finished quite good (no cutting edges). Also as every fire stove, its messy so you get dirty when packing and setting it up (I use black gloves so no issue for me). And finally- Yes, those vents on the bottom are dangerous for the environment. I almost burned down a stump, I set my stove on, due to the hot ash and fire twigs falling through the holes. But only ONCE. Now I use a Tin foil (yeah, I know, more things to carry, no Bushcraft-ish). I set my stove on a tin foil "ash catcher" and everything around is safe. One more con about this construction is that the shape after folding it- It takes a lot of space in the backpack and I don't have a container nor cup that would fit inside that so no chance for saving up space. But after all, I'm very satisfied with this stove construction and with little effort you can make it your best friend while camping (maybe not perfect out of the box).

    I bought that stove about two or three years back and I really don’t know why. I’ve used it less than ten times because as you mentioned it’s annoyingly loud when packed, very dirty after use, and waaay too heavy for most backpackers on the lighter side to justify carrying.

      Oh yeah, and I’ve cut myself on it a couple times too. I won’t even give this stove away. I must have been drinking when I ordered it, I really can’t imagine what possible motivation I’d have had besides it was cheap.

    I have the lixada version of this stove, with no burr issues. Also you never put small twigs in the base, you pack the bottom with large sticks and do a top down burn. I've had mine burn for 15min without any re feeding, and with the longer sustained heat it produces a cleaner burn.

  • @AldoSchmedack
    @AldoSchmedack 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Holes are too big for a gasifier. To much low temperature air for second stage. Flame should be more clear. The Toaks is a much more refined design. Black smoke is a sure sign the fire triangle is mismatched.

    I think you will find that this type stove will run cleaner if you don't put in so much fuel. All the fuel should be below the air holes about half way up the side.

  • @snowflakemelter1172
    @snowflakemelter1172 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The stove isn't dangerous , you just didn't clear the area around it and you sat it high up so the wind blew embers out of the base, if it was on the ground they wouldn't go anywhere. You are getting soot because you have incorrectly loaded the fuel above the gasifier holes in the inner cup and the fact that these stoves require very dry fuel to burn cleanly. Many people are disparaging these kind of stoves because they don't know how to use them properly, they are very sensitive and need specific skills to use.

    How about a good de-burr and a Svea alcohol burner or similar used in place of solid fuel? Really looks like it could be OK and in a pinch solid fuel used instead of alcohol.. I have a couple of Swedish? mess kits with Svea burners in them, the burners are great but the pot system is bulky and heavy. I think sometimes you are better served harvesting components from several designs and making a better one.

  • @tonyperone3242
    @tonyperone3242 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Im not sure this design including the Toaks and others are a true gasifier stove.
    The Gasification takes place in the lower portion of the stove where the gases are reburned, but the fuel burning above this cannot gasify because its burning above the portion of the stove that actually performs
    the gasification process.
    The end result is a lot of soot.
    I have a smaller version of this stove and it too has soot issues though no problems with build quality.

      @@williambranham6249 The urn chamber is double walled so fresh air can come up the outside of the burn area and exit through holes at the rim which reignite smoke rising out by injecting hot oxygenated air at the top. You can see the holes in the lower burn chambers upper edge in this video. adding fuel above those holes negates the effect. Solo stove ads show it better.

    That stove is a brushfire waiting to happen, especially during the dry times of the year here in Central Texas, and anywhere it gets dry for most of the summer. I wouldn't pay their asking price. It could be user modified with some stainless steel screens to keep debris from falling out the bottom, but who buys a stove that is incomplete and half ass built just so they can spend more time and money modifying? Great review!

  • @alexanderweaver8650

    Great honest review and much appreciated, Luke! I love trying out new stoves especially wood burning and alcohol ones. Butane/propane ones are much faster in regards to cooking and boiling water but they are noisy. When I'm cooking outdoors I would rather hear pops and crackles rather than loud hissing...which ruins the ambiance for me. That Black Rifle coffee is good stuff and Amazon sells grounds, Keurig cups and individual packages. The AK 47 packets (12 count) are my favorite but kind of pricey at $15; 10 packets of Tasters Nasty sell for $1 at Dollar Tree...quite a difference. However, a great cup of coffee can make your day that much better. Another good coffee is Juan Valdez, comes in a small jar at Walmart. I put 3-4 teaspoons in a clean medicine bottle and it's enough for an overnighter.

      Joseph Zugoola Allow me to clear this up. Scientific facts are those rocks were at one time part of a larger group of rocks. Time has broken down what once were boulders and mountain sides. By placing those very rocks next to a fire for 30 minutes up to an hour, what you are doing is fire hardening those very rocks. That process will in fact preserve those rocks for future generations. Hope this helps.

    You're getting a dirty burn because you have fuel combusting above the jet line. Keep the fuel short so that the heated air jets are above the fuel.

  • @robertmarsing8086
    @robertmarsing8086 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Luke. Love your reviews. I recently purchased a stove of similar size. I have not been able to test it properly however yet because ALL of the wood available to me in my area is a VERY low quality "sticky" elm (that's what my Dad called it anyway). It is extremely hard to light and once lit, it has to be kept burning large and hot or no matter the size of fuel or it just sputters out. Anyway, from what I have seen on my stove and the one tested in this review, I have a couple things to say. First mine came with a bag that looks just like the one in the review and I found that if you turn the stove sideways it will still fit and the small opening is then on the side instead of the top. Secondly the bottom of the stove on mine has smaller but a lot more holes and the same with the base. I believe that this is the real problem with how hot and fast the stoves burn. Just WAY to much air entering from the bottom creates a bottom burning fire and "gasifier stoves" are supposed to be top burning. I am going to try to put some kind of plate with holes in to the bottom of the fuel/ash bin and possibly some kind of metal band around the base with holes that can be moved to align or partially block the air intake and make it adjustable for heat and to slow down the rate of fuel consumption. Mine actually got so hot that even though I set it on a thin steel plate, it actually BURNT the wood top of the table I set it on after about 20 minutes of use (work table outside of course). Not just blackened or discolored. Deeply charred.
