  • Kyle and Alyssa head out from Wolfsburg in a VW ID.3 to hit as many Tesla Supercahrgers as they can during a unique time where Tesla Europe made Supercharging free for all EV drivers! They want to see how a larger than usual amount of traffic can impact the EV driver experience, from charge port location on a bunch of different makes and models to free charging disincentivizing home charging.

    The SuC on the Autobahn A2 from Dortmund to Hannover were 100% full that day, also heavy use on the way to Berlin. Thats the most stressed route here in Germany. East west main route, few SuC and lots of traffic. Other SuC in city locations were also 100% crowded, but most of the chargers were 50-60%, so always available. Indeed a stress test, use has never been that high. No power plant was on fire, no SuC melted, what a success. And not only in Germany, in all EU countries. SuC net is 100% reliable, using it now for 6 years on my trips through europe.

    38:00 I think you were on the A2 near Burg. During the day, a truck loaded with formaldehyde rammed the end of the traffic jam and a truck loaded with nitrous oxide containers then drove into it. When both trucks started to burn, there was a huge fireworks display. The A2 was closed in both directions until the next day. The road towards Wolfsburg is blocked for a longer period because the concrete at the fire site has to be replaced.

    During our holidays in France we used Tesla as they were cheaper than all others. Problem was that you need the cable on the right side for an Enyaq, but all the Teslas need the cable on the left. Just as you said. So we had some problems to find two free parking spots to used on charger. We did not make friends with Tesla drivers by that.

    US-based Tesla Model 3 owner here traveling in Germany with a rental e-tron (left front charge port) for 3.5 weeks. Mostly charged at Tesla SuC because of convenience and cost. Most non-Tesla chargers I used were 79 or 89 cents/kWh, while the Teslas with subscription were ~33 cents. That’s a huge difference with a thirsty e-torn. One simple solution to the taking two stalls problem would be to have a car parking spot next to each left-most SuC stall in each row for e-trons and such to use, or even have an occasional empty parking spot between Tesla chargers. About half of the 7-8 SuC I used in Germany had one of those extra parking spots, but the others did not. I did once ask a Model Y owner if he could move his car to a different charger so I could use the stall at the end that had a regular parking spot next to it so I could charge, because every other stall was occupied by a Tesla making it impossible for me to charge otherwise. He was very nice and moved for me. At another SuC the two spots I could have used by parking in the (wide) approach lane were occupied by Teslas, with only single stalls available that I could not use. One of those two drivers had just pulled in and walked off, and the other was not willing to move. I ended up charging at a non-Tesla charger behind the SuC but had problems with getting it to work, as was often the case. in this case it was because my WISE MC debit card’s contactless payment limit had been exceeded, but there was no keypad to enter a PIN, and no information what the error was until I checked my WISE app later. I finally tried a different card and it worked. Btw, the whole 3.5 weeks in Germany I only ever saw one other non-Tesla car charging at a Tesla SuC. I even had a id4 owner come up to me asking how I was able to charge at Tesla.

      Not the case in cardiff or Newport, I watched the status. Cardiff did go to full a couple of times but I never saw Newport full, 2 was the worst. Of course….when you got there they were ‘full’ as blocked by non teslas and charging ports on the ‘wrong’ side

  • @Wol747

    IMHO the logical position for ports is front centre. Quick drive in without any reverse wiggles and when backing out the turn gives time for any queued cars to prepare to come in.

    I'm lucky, in the UK the eTron DC charging port is on the drivers side (right hand drive ) so in the same place as a Tesla as long, in relation to the charger, as you pull in front end first. The passenger side is AC only. Not sure if the cable is long enough but I've downloaded the app so I will try. Only 25 stations available for non Tesla in England and Wales and nothing in Scotland and Northern Ireland unfortunately. CCS will, IMO, remain as the standard outside of the US and I agree, nobody is going to mandate that the charging ports are in the same position on every car. Very interesting video - thanks

    Experienced Tesla drivers used to leave one charging slot free between one other - due to power sharing on V2 superchargers. Nowadays this causes problems, as no car with wrong charge port location can use the free spots between Teslas. (This behavior could also be used to block other cars from using the SUCs...)

      @nas4apps 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lots of people in the city live in apartments and hold a lower priced car than relatively new EVs. Also, in city centers where people do have an EV, they would look for an affordable charging option: AC charging in Europe goes up to 22kW (most typical is 11kW, but curb side and business destination also often 22kW) and AC is typically much cheaper than DC high speed charging. City folk are often urban so AC charging at destinations or street curb side often is sufficient. And: not many people who are not 'in' to cars (just drive them) probably did not know of the special deal. You can also charge for free (!) at many German supermarkets. Smart move!

    On Tuesday evening I was heading back from Wales back to London and it was pretty clear overall.
    Avoided Telford on the M54 as that's a disaster every day with 2 broken stalls. M40 Warwick v2 at 21:00 was 4/8 occupancy until someone parked next to me (all Teslas). So I just went off 15mins down the road to Banbury v3 where it was just me and another Tesla at 21:30 (2/12 occupancy). A 3rd car rolled up, a Jag i-Pace. Looked like they were having trouble activating, so I did it for them, they took 23kWh whilst I was taking 39kWh. Good to know that you can activate someone else whilst you are charging yourself.

    • @petehelme7714

      CCS-2 and NACS share one good feature, the mechanical internal locking pin, as opposed to the external J1772 latch cobbled on to CCS-1. That's one reason. But the real one is EV manufacturers wanted access to the US Supercharger network. Tesla rolling out Magic Dock (CCS-1 adapted) chargers everywhere would have given us this, but I imagine Tesla balked at that and said change your charging ports on the car instead.
