    have you ever found that booking your tickets separately as one-way flights costs less points than booking it roundtrip? i am currently looking at tickets on the ultimate rewards portal and have found that the roundtrip ticket is at least 10,000 points more

    Thanks this video helps me out a lot it’s kind of BS how these companies do this stuff found a flight with spirit airlines for $109 at a great time of day on the days I need it and a comparable flight through the Chase portal was $284 that’s like .004 points per dollar definitely just gonna pay for the cash flight

    So I have found the best value by transferring. I needed a last minute United flight from San Pedro Sula, Honduras to Houston this past Christmas. I did the math, and their award travel was valuing my points at slight over $0.01.5 per point, like 1.51 cents per point or something. With only the Preferred card, because my spending is not enough to justify the Reserve at this time, I decided it was best to transfer out to United, and pay the Fees and surcharges on top of it. Basically got a $460 flight for $200, and I spent 17,500 points. With IAH in my backyard, United is typically the easiest airline to hop to fly direct as well, so the 500 points left in their account from the transfer that was not used, will most likely come in handy.
    Compared to the travel rewards portal, the point value was significantly higher I remember.

    Thanks for making this video! I just got my Sapphire Reserve card in the mail yesterday and have barely started using it. I've never had an account with Chase before, so, I was having a hard time understanding how to redeem points / what they all mean. Usually I just go to Google Flights (because I too find that it's very accurate for the cheapest travel) and book through the airlines directly, but now I'll be starting to search on the portal too! Thank you for explaining a bit better :)

    What doesn’t make sense to me is with the Sapphire Preferred (that’s the one I’m looking into), you get 1.25 cpp. The only multiplier the card has is 2x on dining and travel. In the chase portal that brings you to 2.5% as a travel credit.
    With my no annual fee savor one card I get 3% back on dining and entertainment. So wouldn’t it make more sense to just use the savor one card and buy tickets with my cash back? I’d be getting 0.5% more for my spending.

    I just received my Chase Freedom card and am eventually wanting to get the CSR or CSP. My main question is, if I were to get a World of Hyatt card, how do I know when to make spend on my World of Hyatt compared to the CSP/CSR. Also, are you able to combine points from the WoH to the CSP/CSR to give it that bonus.... I’m new to this and am loving all of the information! Any help would be great

    I want to apply for the Saphire Reserve, but I fear being rejected and getting a negative hit on my score. I make +$90K a year, have a Fico score of 758, and I have 3 cards: Freedom Unlimited, AMEX Everyday, and a Macy's Star card; 1 year credit history; 3 closed (paid-off) auto-loans. Should I worry about rejection and negative hit?

    Sebby, I have a question. NOT using CSR points, but when you book a hotel thru chase and pay with your CSR card, and stay at ANA Crown Hotel, do I get the 10x points (or whatever it is) PLUS points from ANA Crown? That seems like I am getting points thru Chase for booking thru them and also points from the hotel. Can you please help me understand this? Thank you.

    Don't forget the value of the miles and flown-miles/mqms you get by using the portal versus transfer partners. If you're going for status, an mqm is worth around 5 cents and a skymile is worth about 1.2 cents. That's an additional 6.2 cents per mile flown. I just did a quick look for ATL to SEA in April for $356.60 or 23,773 UR points. That's 4360 flown miles x 6.2 cents or 270.32 dollars of value. Adding that to the dollar value of the trip, you're actually getting $627 of value for 23,773 points, or 2.64 cents per point instead of just 1.5 cents per point.

    So for the SF->Vegas flight and you only had the CSR, you would say that 1.1 isnt good enough and just book it via the credit card and not use any points?

    • @AskSebby
      @AskSebby  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes. I travel enough that I know I can get 1.5 CPP (or significantly more via transfer partners) in a future trip.
      Example: You have a Starbucks gift card with $100 on it and you're a regular coffee drinker. Someone is willing to buy it for $80 cash. Unless you're strapped for cash, you'll use the gift card at a future point anyways, so selling it is non-optimal.

  • @brownvilleboy1

    Seb, great video! I am very close to getting this credit card any day now. I currently have the Wells Fargo Rewards (have had it for over 7 years) and Bank of America Travel Rewards. I do not like those cards and want to get the CSR. Any advice before I do? I have been thinking of cancelling the Bank of America card since I have had it only for about 2 years. For the Wells Fargo card, I want to change it to the Amex Propel card if that is possible, I think it is. Also, I live in Marin so it's cool that you are near by. Let me know what you think!

I use my CSR to pay for all my travels, but using the portal, how would it be going from JFK to Manila, Aug 17th to Aug 27? I am also, going back Oct 19th to the 29th, this year 2017. Hey - I really like videos you're doing. It would be great if you could do the same with Membership Rewards points. I fly mostly domestic and am struggling to find good redemption options, especially with the 0.06 cent fee that it costs to transfer to Delta.

      That's when using transfer partners and when there is a published award chart (* STARING AT YOU, DELTA *)

    • @AskSebby
      @AskSebby  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you want to get 2 CPP (or more) in value - and assuming you're willing to deal with finding award flights via transfer partners - yes.
      Otherwise, it's mainly about making sure you're actually getting 1.5 CPP (~33% off) using the points. If you're paying a premium on the Chase portal, it's not really a discount.
      Unlikely premium example: Google was $80 and Chase was $150 (10k UR points). In this unlikely situation, you're better off redeeming your 10k points for cash as a statement credit for $100 and paying for the $80 flight.

      Ask Sebby Hey Sebby! I was seriously considering the sapphire reserve until I saw this video. As an alternative, there's a travel bank card from SunTrust in my state of Florida that has no annual fee, 3% on travel, 2% on dining and most other benefits that the reserve has (minus the airport lounges), and offers your redemption as a cash deposit into your SunTrust account at 1.5% value. Would you say this is a better deal?

    Hey Sebby, just curious - Do you think the Chase Sapphire Reserve will still be an available product in about 2-3 years time? Right now, it's my "dream" card if you can call it such. I really like the perks on it, the look, everything. But I heard Chase lost several hundred million on it last year when they first introduced it, which is why they lowered the sign-up bonus. I'm afraid if that continues, the card won't be available by the time my 5/24 is up, and I'll have to settle for something that would make my UR points useless.

    The difference in price is because chase doesn't show basic economy iirc but Google flights does. If you book that Google flights trip you pay for your carry-ons.

    • @AskSebby
      @AskSebby  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My understanding is that it's because Chase is using bulk tickets: www.flyertalk.com/forum/chase-ultimate-rewards/1545930-united-pqds-ultimate-rewards-3.html
      Even when you run through the booking on United and make it Economy instead of Basic Economy, you're looking at $97.40 (not the $112.40 figure). This represents a $15 difference; 15.4% increase in price:
