    I have that same sewing machine. Exactly the same. I purchased it in 1981 new in Lawton, Oklahoma. The lift up part is where the decorator cams go. It comes with three boxes of decorator cams. I maintained it always and love that machine. It is a work horse. If you lift the top portion of the machine up you should see small red dots and those are the oiling points for the top of the machine head. If memory serves me there may be some red dot underneath that do the same. It was an expensive machine then and was the top of the line. I've had it for 38 years. I'm not sure if you still have that machine but it is a work horse and very easy to maintain. As any piece of equipment if you are the singular user and keep it maintained it will last you a lifetime. Of course we always want to update after a few years which I also have done but I still love that machine. The new electronic one I got a few years back is plastic and slips and slides and I still prefer the one shown above. It's heavy stable and like I said a real work horse. Thanks for having a video on this. Awesome to see it on You Tube!
    Blessings

      Just oil your machine real good in all the areas the manual describes and it will run smoothly again...oil is the key to nonworking machines....

    Never use any oil on a sewing machine but pure sewing machine oil. The one you are using has additives that can gum up the machine and cause problems.

      Thank you for saying that. When I saw what oil he was using I couldn't believe my eyes. Yes, never anything but actual clear fresh sewing machine oil, not the old golden color one that's been sitting around since the machine was bought in 1982.

    • @cliftonmcnalley8469
      @cliftonmcnalley8469 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually Triflow oil, originally developed for bicycles, is the new standard for sewing machine oil in the U.S. The 2 Oz bottle with the great applicator is available in most bicycle shops. It is especially excellent for any machine that's been sitting. I've been using Triflow for 10 years and recently had 2 completely seized machines (both were stored for 25+ years) functioning in 15 minutes.
      I've also read that OSMGs are no longer using the "Singer" oil coming in small bottles from China. It isn't what it used to be.

    10:44 when you go around the tension dial to this point, give the thread a little tug to the right , against that wire loop- pulling it towards the top of the tension dial- before going up. At 11:00 - raise the take up lever all the way up using the wheel at the far right of the machine before threading it thru.

      Bell S the first oil I used was a penetrating oil called PB blaster. If it’s not locked up don’t use it. It’s not really a lubricating oil. If it’s not locked up I used Singer Sewing machine oil. There are several brand names but I highly recommend you get one especially for a sewing machine.

      Yes, I work on a lot of vintage sewing machines. The 3 in 1 oil is not good at all. My favorite is Tri-Flow oil. It has little teflon particles in it. I usually order it off line from sew-classic (not affiliated with)

  • @PibbleMom297
    @PibbleMom297 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Dear Diversity2,
    I have been sewing on Kenmore machines for 50+ years. The one you show on this video is a beauty, but it needs much more attention you've given it. It needs to be fully cleaned around and underneath the bobbin race. It needs to have the top removed and everywhere that metal rubs metal it needs to be oiled. The end cover should be removed so you can examine the belts to make sure they're not too tight or loose. They SHOULD give a little bit, otherwise they would stress the motor. Be careful not to get any oil on the belts or pulleys. And don't forget the needle lift rod and other metal connections behind the light cover. The bottom cover needs to come off so you can again, oil everywhere that metal rubs on metal. You'll also need to remove the gear cover, clean out the old grease and put in fresh. And PLEASE, use Tri-Flow synthetic grease on the gears and a genuine clear white sewing machine oil everywhere else. With the covers off, hand turn the wheel toward you to see and feel if it's still stiff anywhere. I realize this is A LOT of work, but you won't regret it. It will allow the motor to run more easily, last longer and you'll find the machine will be much quieter too. I'd like to suggest you clean off as much as possible of the oil you already used and then re-oil will the correct type. I might also suggest you see a video made by James Rogers, entitled "Freeing a Stuck or Stiff Vintage Sewing Machine". James is working on a different model Kenmore, but the principles are the same. Good luck.
    Not only is that machine a beauty, it is a workhorse that will last for generations if taken care of properly. And if you don't want it, put it up for sale somewhere. There are many people who prize vintage "Kennies" for their functionality and durability. I'm one of them - I own four.

      Easy, peasy. Grab your handwheel firmly and pull outwards, that is, to the right. It will make an audible "snap" and that allows you to wind your bobbin without actuating the needle.

    Dang! Too much oil. I see drip from ur needle. Sewing Parts website has oil specifically used for sewing machine. It has built in long tube to reach hard to reach areas easily. I know back in the day, 3 in 1 oil was used. But for some reason, it's frowned upon.

      Hi CHeth, Actually, sewing machine oil has always been the norm. 3 in 1 oil is very handy stuff for cleaning and un-sticking joints, but it's not good for sewing machines because it loosens gears and linkages then dries up. Bad News Clear, "white", quality sewing machine oil can dry up too, but oiling on a regular basis prevents this. A good rule of thumb is to check "under the hood" of your machine about every six months if you sew regularly. And DON'T forget the motor! About once a year is good for motors, again if you sew regularly. Most vintage motors have a tiny hole at each end which require ONE drop only. Having said this, you also need to know that there's frequently a big difference between vintage motors and antique motors and I don't know how old your machine is. Antiques often use little cotton grease wicks that are wrapped in springs and treated with oil. There are lots of helpful videos on TH-cam if you need it.
      If oil is dripping down the needle arm, just put some paper toweling under the presser foot for a little while until it stops. Then sew on some scrap fabric for a little while until the oil no longer flows. You can also open the light cover and use a soft cloth to wipe away as much oil as possible.

      @@PibbleMom297 - I kinda figured that. Since you seem to know enough about this. Is there sewing grease? There are some parts fitted with grease.

    • @PibbleMom297
      @PibbleMom297 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cheath8705 Yep, there sure is: Tri-Flow TF23004 Clear Synthetic Grease - 3 oz. Tube. I use this in all my vintage machines (I'm a collector). It has Teflon in it and has always worked well for me. It's readily available on Amazon for around $10. You also might find it in auto parts stores - at least I think you will. I remember seeing a blogger somewhere mentioning that he or she had found it there.
      If I may, what make and model machine are you working on?
