    THANK YOU! I have a Janome SW2018 that I love dearly. I thought I had solved the freeze problem after thoroughly degreasing and re-oiling. It was working fine though a project and after a month of sitting... It was frozen again. No amount of oiling would get that wheel to turn and all the other usual troubleshooting ideas didn't bring a solution. For my model, I covered the motor to shield it from any oil since this sits directly outside of it. I didn't have to remove any of those clips. Mine had a little hole. I fed it oil. Let it sit for a half hour... and now it is running smoother than EVER.

    THANK YOU! This was a "life saver". I have a machine from 1983 that I brought with me when I moved to Mexico, but it had been in a basement flood about 12 years ago and I hadn't bothered to try it since then. When I did try, I was astonished to find that the motor itself still worked, but was not able to drive the belts. The hardest part for me was figuring out how to get the end piece off and your video was the key. After much oiling and then removing and cleaning the belts...Voila!

    Thank You so much for this!! Turns out my machine did not need new belts, but that the bottom belt drive had seized from lack of use :) This tutorial was incredibly helpful.

    Thank you for taking the time to share this video. Oiling the hand wheel was just what my machine needed. Never been oiled in all theses years. It works like a dream now :-) My total work time was 1 1/2 hours that included viewing video, looking for tools, oil, reviewing a few sections of video a few times, oiling the entire sewing machine and putting it back together. With no help from hubby ;-). Next the washing machine lol. This tutorial saved my machine and me money to not buy a new one. You know what your doing :-)

    I appreciate you sharing this video! I don’t have the manual for a ‘new to me’ Kenmore 158. I’ve learned so much from these TH-cam videos... If you are learning to fix your own machine, Be sure to take take pictures before dismantling anything! This was a gentle suggestion from my husband when I couldn’t reinstall the top to my Futura ll and needed his help😜

    Thank you for your great video. I had the same problem. Sewing repair/ retail shop here in So. Calif wants $200 to service this old Kenmore same year as yours. At the same time trying to sell me a new machine. said id think about it and left. Very discouraged until I saw your video. I have always oiled top and bottom of my machine but never knew about the side part. I was getting ready to buy new belts, but after following the last part of your video oiled it really well and cleaned around the belts ( I think some of my earlier oiling had gotten on the belts) Its working great. I didn't want to buy a new machine, they are made of cheap plastic, just need one for mending and small projects. Thank you again, Mrs. C

    That little pulley on the end where the belts meet... that 🔩 screw is reverse threaded....lefty tighty... righty loosey. That's where you loosen up to get the lug belts on, then you turn left to tighten. Easy peasy. Taught myself to fix sewing machines years ago. Happy sewing! ☺

    Thanks for the share, excellent video. I'm having the same problem. Lubed everything in sight and it still doesn't turn over. I gave up trying to pull the end cover off because it was late and I didn't want to break anything. Very excited to find your clip. Mine was a thrift store bargain with no manual and yes, everything was dry as a bone.

      The belt tension can be adjusted from the bottom via a flat head screw. He should have loosened this screw when removing the motor belt instead of prying it off with the screwdriver. Tightening the belt could have solved the whole problem in addition to adding lube to the reduction gear/pulley.

  • @fragmentalstew
    @fragmentalstew 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a sewing machine very similar to this and the pulley idler had the same problem with being seized up. The easiest way to remove that pulley is to unscrew it completely. The screw is reversed so right loosens and left tightens. Once it's removed, you can knock the axle free and clean it properly, then reoil it easily. Also, that clip doesn't need to be taken off, because the axle will slide out with it in place. I'm honestly impressed you were able to get the clip off, without first unscrewing the assembly. I'm also impressed you were able to get the plastic back off without removing the stitch length knob. I had to use a long screwdriver to unscrew the screws that held the knob on in order to get mine off. Edit: My sewing machine is a 158.1595281

    Thank you so much for posting this video. You have saved the lives of many sewing machines that may have been discarded otherwise. You are a hero.
    To find this video more readily, might I suggest that you add the sewing machine model number to the title (or is it the headline) for the video? The model number (at least for the one I have that looks exactly the same) is 158.1595 yes, it is completely weird to have a decimal point/dot/period in the model number, but I did not decide the model number--thank Sears for this oddity.
    Thanks again.

    • @cliftonmcnalley8469
      @cliftonmcnalley8469 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The model number is not an oddity. The 158 prefix designates the manufacturer of the machine. 158 was a Japanese company whose name escapes me at the moment. (Later 385 models were made by Janome). The numbers after the decimal point signify the exact model you have from this series.

    Belts are MUCH easier to remove and replace if you remove the motor from it's mounts and lift it up slightly. Put on the new belts, move the motor back into position and re-attach it to the mounts. Then make sure the belts are not TOO tight, they should have a little "play" in them, I suggest you also go back and re-oil everywhere - top, bottom and needle function assembly - before running it again. You should also clean out the gear box and add fresh grease. The motor is working too hard and it's noisy - it should be much quieter. It sounds as though it's straining.

    I have used that machine for over 30 years, and think you should also clean and oil under the needle plate, also take off the top and oil the rest of the moving parts, and you will have a much quieter, smoother running machine. Then the motor and belts will run at peak efficiency.

    The old belt you removed looked like it had been put on backwards. With the teeth on the outside. The new belt was shipped teeth on the inside and that's how you installed it. I wonder if that was the issue. I accidentally put oil on my lower belt. Lol!!!... I have an endemko. That's an earlier version of Kenmore. Kenmore bought them out. Great video. Thank you sir.

      My belts are original, so they are over 20 years old. I live in an area that is high desert so things tend to dry rot here, especially rubber. I have used this machine I can't even tell you how much, a lot! I have made several pairs of scrubs, an entire wedding of stuff, too many repairs to count. I got my new belt in the mail the other day. I live here in the states and got free shipping from Sears, so the belt was $8.

    I have a Rossiter? machine, looks practically the same. My belt keeps slipping. A friend gave it the once over and said the belt needed to be tightened, as it had plenty of wear in it.
    Now seen 3/4's (12.58) of your video. I'm going to guess that your new belts are now too tight, and the noise is coming from your motor under too much tension, and the bottom belt needs to be slackened off, using the large bolt holding the cradle which holds the motor below the base.
    Best continue to watch what you do.

Also oil the machine a dry machine turns over harder.😊 Or pause at 1:03 you can clearly see the belt is not worn out it's just loose you can also see how to tighten it....😍

      I recently had this issue with one of my Kenmores. I found that the arm that controls forward/reverse was moving, but the pivot that actually engages the mechanism was stuck. The grease had dried and wouldn't allow it to move freely. It moved, just not smooth like it should. After removing, cleaning and lubricating the pivot, it worked like it should. Took me a while to figure out since I'm not an expert, just like to fix stuff.

  • @david78212
    @david78212 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am really sure that is not the way to install a belt... The motor or that intermediate pulley loosens to allow for removing and adjusting the tension of the belts. Not even watching the entire video, you desperately need to oil that machine... before you burn out the motor that is... a machine should move freely, if not, the FIRST thing you do is oil it... not replace belts and then oil it. Oiling a sewing machine is the first step of problem solving, not the second or third. ESPECIALLY if the machine has been sitting. Sewing machine oil evaporates and then there is no lubrication anywhere.

    • @salomra
      @salomra  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      At first oiling was done according to the manual. Tension is not possible to adjust. Manual don´t define oiling for the pulley. Right or wrong, but machine really works now!

      I fix sewing machines all the time. Love those Kenmore.
      I don't think the belt needed to be changed. All you needed was a good cleaning and oiling. Tighten the tension on the belt pulley on the bottom with that screw on the right.
      Not a very good example of video as far as taking the machine apart. Lol

It moved, just not smooth like it should. After removing, cleaning and lubricating the pivot, it worked like it should. Took me a while to figure out since I'm not an expert, just like to fix stuff.

      It was useful for all the comments, and for me to see what is holding the upper pulley and hand wheel to the machine. As yet I've not found an online manual for my machine, nor a video.
