The absolute #1 thing we tell all our incoming customer in Thailand. "Make Thai Friends". Be seen in the community. Forget all the foreigner friends - it builds an us vs them mentality -- and when things go down they can't help you. Quick rule of thumb: 90% local friends. 10% foreign friends. Learn even 1% of the local language. Will make your life really so much better.
This is coming from a filipino. The first one's who befriend foreigners obviously have some motive. Normal people don't just approach strangers acting all friendly unless they see you struggling with something. If I can share my advice, don't let your guard down on people who are too "kind". I had this japanese female neighbor who I only started talking to after several weeks of seeing her(we live in the same building). She usually goes to my place to chat as she's studying english and needed someone to talk to. Then I saw her filipino friends. I asked her where she met them and told her not to trust them. She even gave them the keys to her room so that they can use it while she's travelling. She didn't listen to me and she became a victim of theft. She did not lose a lot but still...
If some random person were to even start a conversation with me. I would not even respond. If they were persistent. I would be brutally honest and extremely vocal, yes the message would be loud and clear; "leave me alone, and find some other target". And if they continue, I would go into the nearest business, and tell the employees to call the police. All of that can be avoided. Simply, leave me ALONE. I would look at it like this. It's me v you. And since my life is on the line. I'm going to tell you no. And mean it. Again, all of that can be avoided, just leave me alone. Also, I would NEVER get into a routine. My door would always be shut and locked. Shades down. From the outside you could not tell if I was home or not. Also, I would NEVER be in an open building, like the one in this video. In fact, I would rent 3 different apartments. Yes I would be there to enjoy the island. But my main goal is to do it safely.
I have been here in the Philippines for a little over three years now and I think the biggest threat to my health is the traffic and associated pollution. The Hospital in Taygaytay is a pretty good one. I am a vet so I get my blood tests done at the VA clinic in Manila. I just celebrated my 80tth Birthday with a big party last month. We live out in the country, near Lake Taal and Volcano. We hire the local people to do our yard work and pay them well. My wife has a liquor store as her business and I just do videos. We are very happy with ourr lives here.

Very good info, I’am 70 years old and been living in Thailand for nearly 3 years, I’ve also spent sometime over the years in Philippines, Cambodia and Vietnam and have experienced hospitals and clinics in all these countries. My lifestyle is all about keeping fit and eating healthy. Luckily I have no health issues and I don’t need any medication and hopefully I want to stay that way. As we get older it becomes very important to keep your body fit! The advice you’re giving here is priceless 👍

My father-in-law was a fraud investigator for the large insurance company. An American man living in the US married a Filipina. He insured his life for just $100,000. He went to the Philippines with his wife and ended up getting murdered. His wife returned to the US made a claim with my fathers in-laws insurance company. He investigated the husband‘s death all Roads lead to the Americans father-in-law. His father-in-law had him murdered so his daughter could collect the $100,000. He couldn’t quite get enough evidence against her , but he knew her father was the main suspect. My father-in-law phone the widow to come in and get her check. She sat down across the desk from him, and he bluntly told her I believe your father had your husband killed. I’ve turned everything over to the district attorney. He handed her the check he called it blood money. She started weeping. He said, someday you’ll all face your judgment, whether it’s through the DAs office or God.

I recently watched a video of an expat who lives in Dumaguete. Had a scooter crash and broke his leg and ribs. He actually had great things to say about the surgeon and nurses and the cost of his care at the local hospital.
I had a bout of acute pancreatitis here in Chicago. Pain was incredible. Drove myself to the hospital. About 10 minutes away. Almost didn’t make it on the drive. As we get older , things happen. You gotta stay close to medical care. Wherever you are in the world
Hello Tim. I grew up and lived in so many countries, including the Philippines. Once you lived in the Philippines the Philippines never leave you. That solid advice of yours is something to live by, no matter where you are. New lands demand to have both feet on the ground, but so do old. When you have something that others want, eventually someone will try to take it from you. It is just the way of the world. It is our job to not put ourselves in positions where we're vulnerable and open to being taken advantage of. Sad truth of reality, but that's just the way things go.
1. Don't give into the peer pressures of drinking/don't drink too often. 2. Don't get into bad business deals with people with land. 3. Create a positive reputation in the community. (be kind to others, donate)
This. Like all countries, there are bad actors in the islands, specially in the larger cities. Careful in the provinces too, for even if they are more laid back, insurgents and rebels are still active so just be chill too and dont let yourself be a target for ransom.
Too late, been here 15 years… but it’s true. The biggest problems in the Philippines might be yourself. Be patient, kind, honest & friendly. Never loan money. Either give or don’t. We tend to give 😂 and it avoids issues. Never disclose your wealth. You’re just ok and happy to be here. Save 😂 it’s never too late to start. I'm 71, living happily and healthfully in Puerto Princesa Palawan. I had a quadruple bypass when I was 45. Even then I thought I understood how to live a healthy life. I know better now. Rule number one: Do not see your doctor unless absolutely necessary. They are programmed to evaluate symptoms and then prescribe drugs. Be proactive and read. No crap food (junk) including deep fried everything. (Common in the Philippines) There are abundant choices of health foods in Asia. Do your life a favor and learn them. Then start filling your gullet with them and give your body systems a break

No but if Philippine men weren't such dead beats Philippine women would not be looking to meet men outside the country. Many marriage age men want to just hang out with friends, drink, smoke, sing songs all night. Married or unmarried. My wife told me she would never marry a Philippine man because of this.
Travel a lot of Asia,.... married a Pinay. Like your points, and they are true. After Taal / right at the start of Covid, I rallied my local family and we put together small food pack for the folks that did not have other foreign help (through marriage or FWO). We always give too many gifts during the holidays, as the wife loves to shop and we ship over tons of stuff. We do a 7 month US / 5 month PH split, usually spending the "Ber" months here (PH) for the holidays. This year I had purchased a Santa suit and decked out our trike as Rudolph , with battery operated Christmas lights. Visited all extended family, house of folks who had worked for us, 2 market areas, a poorer area near one of the cemeteries, and kilometers of road time waving, stopping for photos and handing out candy. If smiles were Pesos, I'd be rich! Hot, sweaty and a complete blast. Doing Recon on Orphanages to add to our stops next year.
Tim, very good video, you are completely right I have been in Philippines 10 years and I have been my worst enemy. I seen so much here and I have learned to just stay out of others business. I am a foreigner and will never win a argument with a Filipino. I have bought, remolded and sold a home here. I was up front and honest in my dealings, still alive. I would say having a street smart wife has kept me out of bad situations. We go to brangy and school events. I smile and enter act but always stay out of their business. I protect my family and probably gained more respect for that than any thing. Sometimes just being a honest person here goes a long ways. For anyone moving be prepared for changes and let your wife do the talking it works out better. This is what has kept me safe and happy. God bless all the luck to you in 2023..
When in the Philippines let your wife do the talking. We were at a hotel in Mactan, and I got into it with the staff over reservations. I went nowhere. Called my wife over to talk and suddenly, no problem.
My US doctor, who is married to a Filipino in America, told me that the two biggest killers of Filipinos in the Philippines, is Diabetes and Hypertension. Sadly, most Filipino's don't have the money to treat their ailments and accept their fate. Unfortunately. But great advice Tim..Thanks!
Rice and Fat filled foods ( fatty pork etc ) are the culprits . I know my Pinoy buddies eat and like the fatty pork only . They save me the super lean pork and meats . I limit rice to 1/2 cup at dinner time only . People in the RP say I "hate rice " . The RP rice is very good though . I respond = " No, I love rice , I just hate the thought of diabetes from the Glucose rush ! " . they dotn really get it . Fruit is very plentiful, yet Pinoys dont eat a lot of it . Food habits are cultural in many ways .
My brother in law died of a heart attack a few years ago in a province of Mindanao. The ambulance couldn’t get to him on time and he died. He was a young cat, only 38 at the time. This was before the vaccine.

The best info I’ve found on selecting a hospital for good healthcare has been on the channel World Zoom. He is a recently retired hospital president with current knowledge of the available hospitals in the Philippines. There are world class facilities here and he has some great recommendations on his channel. Thanks Tim for all you do sharing in your adventures with a smile.
I am American I live in Thailand 2004 the first 9 years I drank till I was very sick High Blood Pressure and over wait was drinking myself to death 10 years ago I stopped drinking not one drink and lost 13kg so happy I woke up my wife was crying the last day I drank my doctor told me if I don’t stop drinking I was going to die for I will never drink again ❤🎉🎉🎉😊
I live in Western Canada and have been an avid motorcycle rider. I am also a Family Doc and I ride in the MON (middle of nowhere in BC)most of the time. I have come upon 2 serious motorbike crashes, one woman made it with a chopper landing on the highway after 45 min, one man did not. We waited over 30 min just for an ambulance, the chopper was at least 90 min away. You are on your own out there. Good video.
Never got into a “business deal” but did get lotsa offers to “commingle our funds” (ie my thousand$$$ and their hundreds… of pesos) did hear of one Aussy who built a diving school and ended up in a ditch when he refused to pay-off the mayor…

My ex boss, sold up his business and moved to Philippines. He tried to get a business started over there, and ended up getting shot in the back of the head. Not sure what he was up to over there, but it must of been shady.

Spot on with the 3 dangers Tim . I would just add another one . Building a house or renovating property. You will end up being taken advantage of with pricing of materials and labor . There will be many people (usually relatives of the builders) that will end up working on site. They will then stretch out the build to continue paying for all the hired help .
What about a Contractor? Is there a contract that they have to follow? I also see America contractor building in Philippine. Maybe that's a better deal
When I built my house, I had different contractors bid on portions of the build and went with the average price, however they would only get the bid for the next section of work if the work they just did was good. Also, my mother in law bought the materials and paid any labors above the ones the contractor hired.
Tim, you make some good points in your video. Especially, the first one about maintaining one’s health. I spend about 1-2 months a year living in the Philippines and have watched lots of guys more or less drink themselves to death. I would recommend that everyone who has moved to the Phils, or anywhere in the world for that matter, find a good, reliable doctor (there really are plenty in any metropolitan area in the Phils) and get regular check-ups and blood work; at least once a year. I disagree that it’s hard to eat healthy in the Phils. If you’re cooking for yourself, there’s lots of fresh meat, fruit and vegetables. The danger is if you eat out all the time. I also really agree with your point about visibility and involvement in the community. Great idea to provide some rice to the barangay chief to distribute periodically. It makes the chief look good and makes you look good. As you indicated, you never know when that goodwill can come in handy. It looks like your channel is hugely successful. Congratulations. But, from on vlogger to another, I would simply offer this advice: plan and script your videos a little more. This material could have been covered in a lot less time. Maybe it’s just me, but I like things a little more concise. I hope you don’t mind the feedback.

Tim I agree,worked 25 years in ERs,here 30 -60 mins most cases some 10,3 hours time to pray for a miracle while you are conscousness,also our modern ambulances and EMTs are near ICUs on wheels,in Phils its multicabs with someone who knows nothing,has no real equipment, 3 hours is a long ride.

My wife bought property at a resort on the Bataan peninsula and were building a house there. I'm really looking forward to being able to go there for vacations. Not too worried about corruption etc being an American because my wife is a Filipina, and her brother is the current Chief of the PNP.

SunStar CEBU reports that the Philippines is seeing 80,000 to 250,000 medical tourists annually. Patients come from Sri Lanka, East Asia, the Gulf States, Europe, North and South America, the Pacific Islands, Australia and the Pacific Islands. I wouldn't bet that just because you or I haven't observed something, that it doesn't happen. One of my ex-pat friends was nearly killed by an accident in 2012 that brought me here for the first time I visited. The neurosurgeon he worked with in Manila was world class.
I don't think I ruled it out. I was just saying Thailand with its 3.8 Million medical tourists last year (I looked it up) dwarfs the Philippines in that regard. It isn't even close, which is consistent with my broad brush thinking at the time.
I’m in 30s but I agree with the health issue. 😢 I live with a family and the Filipino food is just so oily. I also had a vacation in Palawan and got hurt swimming. I was bleeding but unfortunate the boat operator did not have first aid kit. Hospital is far away. I also agree with bad business deals but it can be anywhere actually.
Good video. All the info is spot on. As a builder, I cannot help but look over the construction techniques of the patio you were standing in. I would consider it unsafe. Avoid it if the wind blows hard.
until the Philippines were occupied by the western world it was very common for the people there to live into their late 90'2, early 100's...Introduction of western food products into their diets has been a major cause of early deaths...
I know Philipinnes well. Yes , you are your own worst enemy. This is no country for rookie travellers. SO MANY broken expats with legal issues back home. Pick your friends wisely. Community relations is a must. Buy 20 kids some pops and drinks. Buy a extra chicken and drop it off at at the house with 10 kids needing to eat. The country is unforgiving if you screw up- remember that. Getting drunk leaves you vulnerable- dangerous . Pinoys first, your last- get use to it. Never by land or business in the Republic- are asking for HUGE PROBLEMS, with any land deal. Expats get zero legal protection in the RP. Women? Careful… remember they have 4-7 brothers with Bolo’s knives. Love the country- but head on a swivel- ALWAYS. God be with you Guy …. Keep safe.

I lived in PI for 5 years in the 70's. I found Filipino people some of the nicest, kindest people I have ever known. I am so envious of you to be there, in the countryside. No big city for me.
Tim, this is great advice you are giving. Westerners should understand that this is not your country, the laws are different. Don't make enemies, understand their cultures, there is nothing to lose to help the community in time of crisis because they will always remember any good deeds you do.
The first 2 problems you mention are also true in America. There are areas in America who either do not have specific equipment, or it is just flat a terrible hospital. There are also areas which are hours away from the closest hospital. Bad business deals are also a thing that in America, and those can lead to...we will say a challenging life.

I think that everything is that Tim says is true for most countries. The foreigner deaths are most like going to be from Business deals, family issues, girl problems (also kind of family issues when the wife's family kills you for the money that they think she'll get from you being dead) or a mix of these. One guy got shot in the face and died in Bohol a few years back because he knew the local dialect. Some drunk locals at a dicey bar for locals (best to stay away from those in the first place), told him to pay for their beers. When he refused, the two guys started to insult him in the local dialect. Unfortunately for the foreigner, is that he understood the insults and insulted them back in the local slang. The drunken Filipino felt that he had lost face, so he pulled out his pistol and shot the guy dead on the spot.
Congratulations on your Awakening and I think I even softly warned you about alcohol. It's extremely hazardous socially or healthwise and some of those guys just have a stupid mouth that is going to betray them. I'll call being Insidious, it is so cheap so available and interesting ly so acceptable until your behavior becomes unacceptable. I will tell you you look like you're in much better shape these days, I could see the alcohol starting to drag you down., I can see your innocent wife begin to reject you. Good job Tim. As a TH-camr I really appreciate that you will voice some negative realities because a lot of these guys all are basing everything on.. is , oh gosh I always felt safe , and I don't want to hear about that, so negative, and the guy probably was a screw up, looking for trouble and blah blah and the biggest one is well I never had a problem I'll say it again well I've never had a problem that is so entitled and so ignorant you didn't even have a clue. My experience started in the '90s marrying very quick and innocent pretty girl. We were definitely in love and lasted more than 5 years, but there you go again, don't send money to the Philippines she even later told me that it's not possible to send money back from the Philippines! I was laughing at that and things had degraded. Just never do business in the Philippines sometimes it works but you'd be surprised how many times you might end up dead in Mindanao the value of your life could be as little as a pack of cigarettes. The terminology I forget but the Filipino phrase is basically better to kill the debt then pay the debt.. traveling alone is so typical and despite that's how I always travel myself it has a huge amount of danger and liability that you just not realizing. Somewhere someone should have your back that was barely covered on any of a dozen trips. When my son was 14 years old we had an intruder on the property in a yelling match out in the street I can tell you I was both shocked and impressed when I came back in the door trying to decide if I was going to grab the gun there's my son he had my back, he had the 12 gauge shotgun ready if it got worse and he said in a cool collected voice Beyond his 14 years and already being schooled in self-defense already taught him many things about firearms he looks at me very calm and says daddy you sounded upset and I just looked at him and I said you're damn right. Thanks for having my back. In the Philippines you might think you have a good friend and that can flip so fast leaving you staggering.. I don't make things up so you can take what I say as serious valid truth. I was staying at a mature businesswoman's rental. I in fact was told that she was connected to Marcos being her profession was legal among other things, she commanded respect and no one talked down to her ever as it got more involved she introduced me to about 10 different women from her office and one of her close relatives. Well the story progresses and she extorted a few hundred dollars or her messenger told me that would be very stupid cuz you'll end up dead so I thought about it and well okay paid the money. A few days later she contacts me or I'd contacted her, she straight up forbid me to see her relative. Well the problem was I was falling in love with that relative and I just married her and brought her to America. Later on probably not directly related but always making a statement of her power and her ego. Call her dragon lady, apparently had her own relative murdered and it was pretty obvious who done it. He was my father-in-law and I really liked him he was very tiny but a martial artist instructor. Could there be an insurance claim for his death? About 5 years later, yet another murder and this was a niece that was totally infatuated with me I would have married her? Absolutely cute smiley gorgeous and innocent. I hate to say sometimes I have predictions Manifest Destiny in the last time I saw her I could see she was growing up fast about 16 years old and I made the mistake of saying " that girl's going to destroy her life " and that's pretty much what happened.. couple years later she has two kids typical Filipino guy runs off, she's the single mom and some Shabu addict, keeps hounding her until finally she goes out with him. that was the end he raped her beat her ,and then she got away , until he ran her down and he stabbed the hell out of her on one of the places I had walked the very ground I'd walk by before. This is really not that uncommon I made efforts and I also want to know both of these cases, were Pure Evil, I spent a few hundred dollars on Filipino detectives and some other connection that basically ripped me off I could see there would be no justice especially with this guilty party. You have to understand that many times someone already has a reputation someone already owns the police and just by going to the police you're notifying the guilty perpetrator that you are involved in making steps that could cost you your life. You may be already outbid outsmarted and certainly overpowered. Even losing face you may not understand what you did wrong but you did it and it's best to leave town immediately and this is in general I'll just say in Asia. Just dating a woman that has any kind of x not even previously married they are already aware they can kill you and walk away because it's a crime of passion do you know how many times I've been blindsided by an Asian woman and even had death threats. Not knowing the ex-husband was in inches of me about to attack and I didn't have a clue Thai lady set it up and told me this guy was her friend's driver. Well it took me a couple of months to figure that out after seeing This Woman's child and finally figuring out putting it all together that's why the guy was driving insanely and purposely rough abrupt and then threw the money down when I paid him. Later I found he was stalking her and that scar on her throat all came together.. I won't even mention the rest of that story it gets worse, and multiple times I'm lucky to be alive. Other cases include guys that oh maybe he got depressed the list of those after they found them apparently jumped off the top floor of the hotel. Happens in Cebu. Or the friend of a friend quickly comes from the US retires blah blah sold everything got a bunch of money never admit to your finances. Married one week next week he's suddenly deathly ill about 3 days after buying a very nice resort. To expat foreigners previously was my neighbor and then the other European down the highways. Both murdered either in their house or at the gate both killed by their own wives boyfriend oh Filipino boyfriend. And I believe both of those women basically got away with murder and loaded up everything they wanted with their boyfriend and just went to a different Island. If no one stands up for you and files murder charges you can bet the police are never going to do anything even so you don't know who you're dealing with and that could end your life .... many times I hear TH-camrs and of course especially tourists saying oh I never had a problem I never felt unsafe. That's because it's a mesmerizing tropical Paradise that you know nothing about don't portray things as you know something which you are absolutely innocent and ignorant of. Every time I hear those words I've never had a problem people are so friendly uh h a.. straight up that is providing a false sense of security and I could bring you pages of guys that did not come back from Philippines most of them were alone and single which means you're probably not going to hear about them. I never felt unsafe did you know the Cobra was on your Trail and yet the last moment you were lucky.. or the expat walking down the street daylight in Cebu this was on the news by the way, he was pretty clever had his money in the McDonald's bag but how could you escape anyone not knowing that people everywhere always watching. The expat refused to hand over the money and he was shot on the spot. Frequency? That happens about once a week in Cebu. It's like the guy that died recently in Dumaguete, obviously no seatbelt, life can change or end in an instant, maybe you felt good and safe and never had a problem until then. Best of luck and be careful how you approach a new life you know nothing about like the old Filipino judge, forgot his name, oh yes enjoy our beautiful islands and pretty women but just sleep with one eye open 🙏🙏

The # 1 cause of death in the Philippines is respiratory problems. I lived there for 9 years. I have a Filipina wife, and 4 children still living there. I had to leave because of the climate. I developed a constant cough with a very sticky white flem that got in my sinuses. I tried to blow my nose to get some relief, and damaged my ear drums. I had all the symptoms of Meniers disease. I lost my sense of smell, and couldn't taste food. I had vertigo and lost 30 Lbs of muscle mass during the year of quarantine. I've been back in Colorado for a year and a half and I'm finally regaining my health a little more every day. The Philippines will kill you! If you are a Filipino or an Expat you have to have a regular check up every 6 months or every year. Health is very important but most people don't care about there health. And luckily for me nd my partner/husband we live here in Panglao Island, Bohol which is very close to Tagbilaran City (that has a lot of hospitals to choose from. Yes my husband has hypertension and a heart problem. He had a mild stroke last 2019 but he recovered after a month and had no problem during the stroke because I know how to care and know what to do with a stroke patient... Great video Tim. Business deals. Theft and corruption are why Intel left and never looked back. Even had/got the U.S.'s own crime solving department involved in the investigation. My own father (U.S. Navy) told me the first thing a kid is taught there is to steal. That happened to me on the way out to Guam through customs, the woman saw something she liked and said, Oh this is not allowed, but I knew what was happening so I just said Ok and kept it moving. Main thing is I'm home now, safe and sound. Would I ever retire there?!?!? As of right now, after seeing Laoag and Manila, nah, I'll pass. I never felt threatened but did feel looked at... and watched. It was nice to be twice the size and height of the dudes there and admired by the women. I am married to a Filipina who was always with me. I could sense the envy of the local girls and women there but also the ire of the men (foreigner steals another one of our women). Good to be back home in the U.S.A. though. And I couldn't care less about the dollar to peso ratio, I still wouldn't want to be there long term. Looking/studying harder than ever now at the Las Cruces/El Paso regions, currently in Hawaii.
Aloha Tim Well spoken! I have been coming to Philippines since the day Marcos was ousted. I agree with all you said . The food in most cases is crap and unhealthy. I recommend eating a salad daily. My brother in law is 45 and has major medical issues from smoking and eating nothing but pork 3 times a day. In addition he only drinks soft drinks all day long. Coke and Pig is the curse of all Philippinos. Drinking with the locals is a major mistake and most business deals will not work out. Opening a restaraunt or sari sari store is a great way to lose money. My rule is to be friendly, not to give money to anyone even beggars. (It is illegal!) And refuse any open drinks that someone offers to you. Last tip that I learned is not to use the electric water kettle in hotel rooms as Asian (especially Chinese) tourists tend to boil their socks and underwear in them. Stay safe!

A few years ago, an American was going to marry a Philipine lady and she got him to take out a one-million-dollar insurance policy payable to her. Her brothers beat him to death with baseball bats and only got one year in their prison system.

I had gout after being here for a few years eating the local food and fast food, I felt kind of hopeless about being healthy here at first but I experimented with my diet and discovered that it was the cooking oil they use most often here, the canola, palm or whatever it is. I read about these oils and turns out they can disrupt your kidneys, so the kidneys are unable to filter the uric acid and it builds up in your bloodstream. So you could eliminate all the 'high uric acid' foods you want but if you're still eating food cooked with that oil you're screwed. I haven't had a single gout attack or any inflammation period since I started eating food that's either completely unprocessed (fruits, vegetables, rotisserie chicken, nothing fried) or when I do eat something cooked with oil I make sure it's coconut oil. So you can still eat healthy here, and it's not hard other than the fact that you have to do most of your shopping at the wetmarkets/farmers' markets rather than the grocery store. you'll save money on food AND medical bills.

I'm assuming that you can't buy your own business as a foreignor since you bought one for your wife rather than yourself? Or are you also allowed to purchase your own business now that you are married to a local? When you bought the business is your name on the title as well as hers or is that not allowed? Are there any major pros or cons whether both your names are on the title rather than just hers? Lots of questions, sorry lol But I've never heard anyone who's lived it explain it before.. This is coming from a filipino. The first one's who befriend foreigners obviously have some motive. Normal people don't just approach strangers acting all friendly unless they see you struggling with something. If I can share my advice, don't let your guard down on people who are too "kind".
I had this japanese female neighbor who I only started talking to after several weeks of seeing her(we live in the same building). She usually goes to my place to chat as she's studying english and needed someone to talk to. Then I saw her filipino friends. I asked her where she met them and told her not to trust them. She even gave them the keys to her room so that they can use it while she's travelling. She didn't listen to me and she became a victim of theft. She did not lose a lot but still...

If some random person were to even start a conversation with me. I would not even respond. If they were persistent. I would be brutally honest and extremely vocal, yes the message would be loud and clear; "leave me alone, and find some other target". And if they continue, I would go into the nearest business, and tell the employees to call the police. All of that can be avoided. Simply, leave me ALONE.
I would look at it like this. It's me v you. And since my life is on the line. I'm going to tell you no. And mean it.
Again, all of that can be avoided, just leave me alone.
Also, I would NEVER get into a routine. My door would always be shut and locked. Shades down. From the outside you could not tell if I was home or not. Also, I would NEVER be in an open building, like the one in this video. In fact, I would rent 3 different apartments. Yes I would be there to enjoy the island. But my main goal is to do it safely.

I have been here in the Philippines for a little over three years now and I think the biggest threat to my health is the traffic and associated pollution. The Hospital in Taygaytay is a pretty good one. I am a vet so I get my blood tests done at the VA clinic in Manila. I just celebrated my 80tth Birthday with a big party last month. We live out in the country, near Lake Taal and Volcano. We hire the local people to do our yard work and pay them well. My wife has a liquor store as her business and I just do videos. We are very happy with ourr lives here.
The traffic is insane in Taygaytay especilly on weekends. Love Leslie's restaurant..

Very good info, I’am 70 years old and been living in Thailand for nearly 3 years, I’ve also spent sometime over the years in Philippines, Cambodia and Vietnam and have experienced hospitals and clinics in all these countries. My lifestyle is all about keeping fit and eating healthy. Luckily I have no health issues and I don’t need any medication and hopefully I want to stay that way. As we get older it becomes very important to keep your body fit! The advice you’re giving here is priceless 👍

My father-in-law was a fraud investigator for the large insurance company. An American man living in the US married a Filipina. He insured his life for just $100,000. He went to the Philippines with his wife and ended up getting murdered.
His wife returned to the US made a claim with my fathers in-laws insurance company. He investigated the husband‘s death all Roads lead to the Americans father-in-law. His father-in-law had him murdered so his daughter could collect the $100,000. He couldn’t quite get enough evidence against her , but he knew her father was the main suspect.
My father-in-law phone the widow to come in and get her check. She sat down across the desk from him, and he bluntly told her I believe your father had your husband killed. I’ve turned everything over to the district attorney. He handed her the check he called it blood money. She started weeping. He said, someday you’ll all face your judgment, whether it’s through the DAs office or God.

I recently watched a video of an expat who lives in Dumaguete. Had a scooter crash and broke his leg and ribs. He actually had great things to say about the surgeon and nurses and the cost of his care at the local hospital.
I had a bout of acute pancreatitis here in Chicago. Pain was incredible. Drove myself to the hospital. About 10 minutes away. Almost didn’t make it on the drive. As we get older , things happen. You gotta stay close to medical care. Wherever you are in the world
Hello Tim. I grew up and lived in so many countries, including the Philippines. Once you lived in the Philippines the Philippines never leave you. That solid advice of yours is something to live by, no matter where you are. New lands demand to have both feet on the ground, but so do old. When you have something that others want, eventually someone will try to take it from you. It is just the way of the world. It is our job to not put ourselves in positions where we're vulnerable and open to being taken advantage of. Sad truth of reality, but that's just the way things go.

Yeah those fries get hard quick after they get cold. Its like they are cooked in varnish. Boiled linseed oil is a vegetable oil, like glue in the veins. In sipping olive oil now to get the hardening reduced.

I'm 71, living happily and healthfully in Puerto Princesa Palawan. I had a quadruple bypass when I was 45. Even then I thought I understood how to live a healthy life. I know better now. Rule number one: Do not see your doctor unless absolutely necessary. They are programmed to evaluate symptoms and then prescribe drugs. Be proactive and read. No crap food (junk) including deep fried everything. (Common in the Philippines) There are abundant choices of health foods in Asia. Do your life a favor and learn them. Then start filling your gullet with them and give your body systems a break

Like your points, and they are true. After Taal / right at the start of Covid, I rallied my local family and we put together small food pack for the folks that did not have other foreign help (through marriage or FWO).
We always give too many gifts during the holidays, as the wife loves to shop and we ship over tons of stuff. We do a 7 month US / 5 month PH split, usually spending the "Ber" months here (PH) for the holidays.
This year I had purchased a Santa suit and decked out our trike as Rudolph , with battery operated Christmas lights. Visited all extended family, house of folks who had worked for us, 2 market areas, a poorer area near one of the cemeteries, and kilometers of road time waving, stopping for photos and handing out candy. If smiles were Pesos, I'd be rich! Hot, sweaty and a complete blast. Doing Recon on Orphanages to add to our stops next year.

Tim, very good video, you are completely right I have been in Philippines 10 years and I have been my worst enemy. I seen so much here and I have learned to just stay out of others business. I am a foreigner and will never win a argument with a Filipino. I have bought, remolded and sold a home here. I was up front and honest in my dealings, still alive. I would say having a street smart wife has kept me out of bad situations. We go to brangy and school events. I smile and enter act but always stay out of their business. I protect my family and probably gained more respect for that than any thing. Sometimes just being a honest person here goes a long ways. For anyone moving be prepared for changes and let your wife do the talking it works out better. This is what has kept me safe and happy. God bless all the luck to you in 2023..
When in the Philippines let your wife do the talking. We were at a hotel in Mactan, and I got into it with the staff over reservations. I went nowhere. Called my wife over to talk and suddenly, no problem.

My US doctor, who is married to a Filipino in America, told me that the two biggest killers of Filipinos in the Philippines, is Diabetes and Hypertension. Sadly, most Filipino's don't have the money to treat their ailments and accept their fate. Unfortunately. But great advice Tim..Thanks!

Rice and Fat filled foods ( fatty pork etc ) are the culprits . I know my Pinoy buddies eat and like the fatty pork only . They save me the super lean pork and meats . I limit rice to 1/2 cup at dinner time only . People in the RP say I "hate rice " . The RP rice is very good though . I respond = " No, I love rice , I just hate the thought of diabetes from the Glucose rush ! " . they dotn really get it . Fruit is very plentiful, yet Pinoys dont eat a lot of it . Food habits are cultural in many ways .

My brother in law died of a heart attack a few years ago in a province of Mindanao. The ambulance couldn’t get to him on time and he died. He was a young cat, only 38 at the time. This was before the vaccine.

The best info I’ve found on selecting a hospital for good healthcare has been on the channel World Zoom. He is a recently retired hospital president with current knowledge of the available hospitals in the Philippines. There are world class facilities here and he has some great recommendations on his channel.

I live in Western Canada and have been an avid motorcycle rider. I am also a Family Doc and I ride in the MON (middle of nowhere in BC)most of the time. I have come upon 2 serious motorbike crashes, one woman made it with a chopper landing on the highway after 45 min, one man did not. We waited over 30 min just for an ambulance, the chopper was at least 90 min away. You are on your own out there. Good video.

Spot on with the 3 dangers Tim . I would just add another one . Building a house or renovating property. You will end up being taken advantage of with pricing of materials and labor . There will be many people (usually relatives of the builders) that will end up working on site. They will then stretch out the build to continue paying for all the hired help .
They will even rip their own family members off on jobs. Its dog eat dog.
What about a Contractor? Is there a contract that they have to follow? I also see America contractor building in Philippine. Maybe that's a better deal

When I built my house, I had different contractors bid on portions of the build and went with the average price, however they would only get the bid for the next section of work if the work they just did was good. Also, my mother in law bought the materials and paid any labors above the ones the contractor hired.

Tim, you make some good points in your video. Especially, the first one about maintaining one’s health. I spend about 1-2 months a year living in the Philippines and have watched lots of guys more or less drink themselves to death. I would recommend that everyone who has moved to the Phils, or anywhere in the world for that matter, find a good, reliable doctor (there really are plenty in any metropolitan area in the Phils) and get regular check-ups and blood work; at least once a year. I disagree that it’s hard to eat healthy in the Phils. If you’re cooking for yourself, there’s lots of fresh meat, fruit and vegetables. The danger is if you eat out all the time.
I also really agree with your point about visibility and involvement in the community. Great idea to provide some rice to the barangay chief to distribute periodically. It makes the chief look good and makes you look good. As you indicated, you never know when that goodwill can come in handy.
It looks like your channel is hugely successful. Congratulations. But, from on vlogger to another, I would simply offer this advice: plan and script your videos a little more. This material could have been covered in a lot less time. Maybe it’s just me, but I like things a little more concise. I hope you don’t mind the feedback.
Yeah, I told him the same thing. Way too many long pauses, and the video cuts were jarring.

Tim I agree,worked 25 years in ERs,here 30 -60 mins most cases some 10,3 hours time to pray for a miracle while you are conscousness,also our modern ambulances and EMTs are near ICUs on wheels,in Phils its multicabs with someone who knows nothing,has no real equipment, 3 hours is a long ride.

I wouldn't bet that just because you or I haven't observed something, that it doesn't happen. One of my ex-pat friends was nearly killed by an accident in 2012 that brought me here for the first time I visited. The neurosurgeon he worked with in Manila was world class.
I don't think I ruled it out. I was just saying Thailand with its 3.8 Million medical tourists last year (I looked it up) dwarfs the Philippines in that regard. It isn't even close, which is consistent with my broad brush thinking at the time.
Medical tourists in Thailand are mostly cosmetic.
I’m in 30s but I agree with the health issue. 😢 I live with a family and the Filipino food is just so oily. I also had a vacation in Palawan and got hurt swimming. I was bleeding but unfortunate the boat operator did not have first aid kit. Hospital is far away. I also agree with bad business deals but it can be anywhere actually.
ask for steamed veggies and grilled fish. you can choose to eat healthy. vegetables and fruits are plenty . learn to eat those.
If you can't adapt our food then I suggest you must go back to your country or go to other countries, that way you'll feel better.

until the Philippines were occupied by the western world it was very common for the people there to live into their late 90'2, early 100's...Introduction of western food products into their diets has been a major cause of early deaths...
I know Philipinnes well. Yes , you are your own worst enemy. This is no country for rookie travellers. SO MANY broken expats with legal issues back home. Pick your friends wisely. Community relations is a must. Buy 20 kids some pops and drinks. Buy a extra chicken and drop it off at at the house with 10 kids needing to eat. The country is unforgiving if you screw up- remember that. Getting drunk leaves you vulnerable- dangerous . Pinoys first, your last- get use to it. Never by land or business in the Republic- are asking for HUGE PROBLEMS, with any land deal. Expats get zero legal protection in the RP. Women? Careful… remember they have 4-7 brothers with Bolo’s knives. Love the country- but head on a swivel- ALWAYS. God be with you Guy …. Keep safe.

I lived in PI for 5 years in the 70's. I found Filipino people some of the nicest, kindest people I have ever known. I am so envious of you to be there, in the countryside. No big city for me.
As a Filipino we have plenty of bad people too sadly.
Tim, this is great advice you are giving. Westerners should understand that this is not your country, the laws are different. Don't make enemies, understand their cultures, there is nothing to lose to help the community in time of crisis because they will always remember any good deeds you do.

The first 2 problems you mention are also true in America. There are areas in America who either do not have specific equipment, or it is just flat a terrible hospital. There are also areas which are hours away from the closest hospital. Bad business deals are also a thing that in America, and those can lead to...we will say a challenging life.

I think that everything is that Tim says is true for most countries. The foreigner deaths are most like going to be from Business deals, family issues, girl problems (also kind of family issues when the wife's family kills you for the money that they think she'll get from you being dead) or a mix of these.
One guy got shot in the face and died in Bohol a few years back because he knew the local dialect. Some drunk locals at a dicey bar for locals (best to stay away from those in the first place), told him to pay for their beers. When he refused, the two guys started to insult him in the local dialect. Unfortunately for the foreigner, is that he understood the insults and insulted them back in the local slang. The drunken Filipino felt that he had lost face, so he pulled out his pistol and shot the guy dead on the spot.

is , oh gosh I always felt safe , and I don't want to hear about that, so negative, and the guy probably was a screw up, looking for trouble and blah blah and the biggest one is well I never had a problem I'll say it again well I've never had a problem that is so entitled and so ignorant you didn't even have a clue. My experience started in the '90s marrying very quick and innocent pretty girl. We were definitely in love and lasted more than 5 years, but there you go again, don't send money to the Philippines she even later told me that it's not possible to send money back from the Philippines! I was laughing at that and things had degraded. Just never do business in the Philippines sometimes it works but you'd be surprised how many times you might end up dead in Mindanao the value of your life could be as little as a pack of cigarettes. The terminology I forget but the Filipino phrase is basically better to kill the debt then pay the debt.. traveling alone is so typical and despite that's how I always travel myself it has a huge amount of danger and liability that you just not realizing. Somewhere someone should have your back that was barely covered on any of a dozen trips. When my son was 14 years old we had an intruder on the property in a yelling match out in the street I can tell you I was both shocked and impressed when I came back in the door trying to decide if I was going to grab the gun there's my son he had my back, he had the 12 gauge shotgun ready if it got worse and he said in a cool collected voice Beyond his 14 years and already being schooled in self-defense already taught him many things about firearms he looks at me very calm and says daddy you sounded upset and I just looked at him and I said you're damn right. Thanks for having my back.
In the Philippines you might think you have a good friend and that can flip so fast leaving you staggering.. I don't make things up so you can take what I say as serious valid truth. I was staying at a mature businesswoman's rental. I in fact was told that she was connected to Marcos being her profession was legal among other things, she commanded respect and no one talked down to her ever as it got more involved she introduced me to about 10 different women from her office and one of her close relatives. Well the story progresses and she extorted a few hundred dollars or her messenger told me that would be very stupid cuz you'll end up dead so I thought about it and well okay paid the money. A few days later she contacts me or I'd contacted her, she straight up forbid me to see her relative. Well the problem was I was falling in love with that relative and I just married her and brought her to America. Later on probably not directly related but always making a statement of her power and her ego. Call her dragon lady, apparently had her own relative murdered and it was pretty obvious who done it. He was my father-in-law and I really liked him he was very tiny but a martial artist instructor. Could there be an insurance claim for his death? About 5 years later, yet another murder and this was a niece that was totally infatuated with me I would have married her? Absolutely cute smiley gorgeous and innocent. I hate to say sometimes I have predictions Manifest Destiny in the last time I saw her I could see she was growing up fast about 16 years old and I made the mistake of saying
" that girl's going to destroy her life "
and that's pretty much what happened..
couple years later she has two kids typical Filipino guy runs off, she's the single mom and some Shabu addict, keeps hounding her until finally she goes out with him.
that was the end he raped her beat her ,and then she got away , until he ran her down and he stabbed the hell out of her on one of the places I had walked the very ground I'd walk by before. This is really not that uncommon I made efforts and I also want to know both of these cases, were Pure Evil, I spent a few hundred dollars on Filipino detectives and some other connection that basically ripped me off I could see there would be no justice especially with this guilty party. You have to understand that many times someone already has a reputation someone already owns the police and just by going to the police you're notifying the guilty perpetrator that you are involved in making steps that could cost you your life. You may be already outbid outsmarted and certainly overpowered. Even losing face you may not understand what you did wrong but you did it and it's best to leave town immediately and this is in general I'll just say in Asia. Just dating a woman that has any kind of x not even previously married they are already aware they can kill you and walk away because it's a crime of passion do you know how many times I've been blindsided by an Asian woman and even had death threats. Not knowing the ex-husband was in inches of me about to attack and I didn't have a clue Thai lady set it up and told me this guy was her friend's driver. Well it took me a couple of months to figure that out after seeing This Woman's child and finally figuring out putting it all together that's why the guy was driving insanely and purposely rough abrupt and then threw the money down when I paid him. Later I found he was stalking her and that scar on her throat all came together.. I won't even mention the rest of that story it gets worse, and multiple times I'm lucky to be alive.
Other cases include guys that oh maybe he got depressed the list of those after they found them apparently jumped off the top floor of the hotel. Happens in Cebu. Or the friend of a friend quickly comes from the US retires blah blah sold everything got a bunch of money never admit to your finances. Married one week next week he's suddenly deathly ill about 3 days after buying a very nice resort. To expat foreigners previously was my neighbor and then the other European down the highways. Both murdered either in their house or at the gate both killed by their own wives boyfriend oh Filipino boyfriend. And I believe both of those women basically got away with murder and loaded up everything they wanted with their boyfriend and just went to a different Island. If no one stands up for you and files murder charges you can bet the police are never going to do anything even so you don't know who you're dealing with and that could end your life .... many times I hear TH-camrs and of course especially tourists saying oh I never had a problem I never felt unsafe. That's because it's a mesmerizing tropical Paradise that you know nothing about don't portray things as you know something which you are absolutely innocent and ignorant of. Every time I hear those words I've never had a problem people are so friendly uh h a.. straight up that is providing a false sense of security and I could bring you pages of guys that did not come back from Philippines most of them were alone and single which means you're probably not going to hear about them. I never felt unsafe did you know the Cobra was on your Trail and yet the last moment you were lucky.. or the expat walking down the street daylight in Cebu this was on the news by the way, he was pretty clever had his money in the McDonald's bag but how could you escape anyone not knowing that people everywhere always watching. The expat refused to hand over the money and he was shot on the spot. Frequency? That happens about once a week in Cebu. It's like the guy that died recently in Dumaguete, obviously no seatbelt, life can change or end in an instant, maybe you felt good and safe and never had a problem until then. Best of luck and be careful how you approach a new life you know nothing about

from a Filipino, both sides of the story are true... philippines being a paradise, and sleeping with one eye open... are true. But Tim gives good guidance here on how to enjoy life and still stay out of trouble. Be careful of business, be careful of women who have lower level men interested in them, love wont conquer all if you stay where your presence whipped up a storm .
Seems like you are just out in asia to exploit women and not be sincere with them. Filipinos are intuitive people and can see right thru bullsh*t. Filipinos are reserved but theyll match anyones energy if theyre outspoken its called (sakyan kita) but be aware theyre already reading your entire personality

The # 1 cause of death in the Philippines is respiratory problems. I lived there for 9 years. I have a Filipina wife, and 4 children still living there. I had to leave because of the climate. I developed a constant cough with a very sticky white flem that got in my sinuses. I tried to blow my nose to get some relief, and damaged my ear drums. I had all the symptoms of Meniers disease. I lost my sense of smell, and couldn't taste food. I had vertigo and lost 30 Lbs of muscle mass during the year of quarantine. I've been back in Colorado for a year and a half and I'm finally regaining my health a little more every day. The Philippines will kill you! I laughed when my Uncle Robert told me that, but now I know he was right. Don't Go To the PHILIPPINES! Get the best thing they have to offer, a Filipina Wife, and get her out of there.

They have goon squads driving around giving citations to anyone who smokes in public, or is just sitting in their vehicle waiting for a place to park. 500 pesos fine for anything they can get you for. I never signed any one of those or paid the fines. I told them that I was taking my 1/2 million pesos that I was pumping into their economy every year and going back to the States. They can kiss my A ss good bye, and I'm never going back.

I go to St Lukes Hospital in BGC Taguig, Medical City (family friends). There is a newer hospital next to our condo, but we have not needed to go.

If you are a Filipino or an Expat you have to have a regular check up every 6 months or every year. Health is very important but most people don't care about there health. And luckily for me nd my partner/husband we live here in Panglao Island, Bohol which is very close to Tagbilaran City (that has a lot of hospitals to choose from. Yes my husband has hypertension and a heart problem. He had a mild stroke last 2019 but he recovered after a month and had no problem during the stroke because I know how to care and know what to do with a stroke patient...

Business deals. Theft and corruption are why Intel left and never looked back. Even had/got the U.S.'s own crime solving department involved in the investigation. My own father (U.S. Navy) told me the first thing a kid is taught there is to steal. That happened to me on the way out to Guam through customs, the woman saw something she liked and said, Oh this is not allowed, but I knew what was happening so I just said Ok and kept it moving. Main thing is I'm home now, safe and sound. Would I ever retire there?!?!? As of right now, after seeing Laoag and Manila, nah, I'll pass. I never felt threatened but did feel looked at... and watched. It was nice to be twice the size and height of the dudes there and admired by the women. I am married to a Filipina who was always with me. I could sense the envy of the local girls and women there but also the ire of the men (foreigner steals another one of our women). Good to be back home in the U.S.A. though. And I couldn't care less about the dollar to peso ratio, I still wouldn't want to be there long term. Looking/studying harder than ever now at the Las Cruces/El Paso regions, currently in Hawaii.

Well spoken! I have been coming to Philippines since the day Marcos was ousted. I agree with all you said . The food in most cases is crap and unhealthy. I recommend eating a salad daily. My brother in law is 45 and has major medical issues from smoking and eating nothing but pork 3 times a day. In addition he only drinks soft drinks all day long. Coke and Pig is the curse of all Philippinos. Drinking with the locals is a major mistake and most business deals will not work out. Opening a restaraunt or sari sari store is a great way to lose money. My rule is to be friendly, not to give money to anyone even beggars. (It is illegal!)
And refuse any open drinks that someone offers to you. Last tip that I learned is not to use the electric water kettle in hotel rooms as Asian (especially Chinese) tourists tend to boil their socks and underwear in them. Stay safe!

Yes, most people not just Filipinos but foreigners too they just jump into this lifestyle of not just great abundance of both good and bad food. All of us are given a one shot to use this body so, we must feed and use it properly. Wherever you are, it's the good lifestyle that you live in that matters most. A few years ago, an American was going to marry a Philipine lady and she got him to take out a one-million-dollar insurance policy payable to her. Her brothers beat him to death with baseball bats and only got one year in their prison system.

I had gout after being here for a few years eating the local food and fast food, I felt kind of hopeless about being healthy here at first but I experimented with my diet and discovered that it was the cooking oil they use most often here, the canola, palm or whatever it is. I read about these oils and turns out they can disrupt your kidneys, so the kidneys are unable to filter the uric acid and it builds up in your bloodstream. So you could eliminate all the 'high uric acid' foods you want but if you're still eating food cooked with that oil you're screwed. I haven't had a single gout attack or any inflammation period since I started eating food that's either completely unprocessed (fruits, vegetables, rotisserie chicken, nothing fried) or when I do eat something cooked with oil I make sure it's coconut oil.
So you can still eat healthy here, and it's not hard other than the fact that you have to do most of your shopping at the wetmarkets/farmers' markets rather than the grocery store. you'll save money on food AND medical bills.
Pay your farmer now OR pay big Pharma later!
@Not Expat Joe Well that is if you are afraid of saturated fats? Or do you know if its it directely linked to Gout? Olive oil only got one double carbon binding molecule. Its probably a good bet. Canola and soja oil and the like oxidise in the blood and then it can cause cloths and inflammations.

Lived there in Samar 15 years, good advise Tim. I lived really isolated for years. The snakes and a few insects but only in the jungle, On sand and living close to the beach is pretty safe. If you plan to stay and have not yet retired and need to build extra income. Hard unless your married, If your married can live good by buying your wife a business to run. I bought my wife a donut shop and its worked out well.

I'm assuming that you can't buy your own business as a foreignor since you bought one for your wife rather than yourself?
Or are you also allowed to purchase your own business now that you are married to a local?
When you bought the business is your name on the title as well as hers or is that not allowed?
Are there any major pros or cons whether both your names are on the title rather than just hers?

@@thewatcher9539 being Married makes the difference. No way to really make money. Better to start your wife a business and let her run it and show her. If your wife can make donuts taste like Krispy Creme american donuts. Thats good. Better to ship your equipment and buy things here. Also the best donut fryer there is is a large wok.. A giant bag of flour in Phil is less than $20 US. Another thats good if in area with other foreigners, then shoud do Fish-N-Chips.Either way those businesses turn a good profit even selling at filipno peso should make $100 a day, = P 5000. you can live good on that in many areas.
You can buy a good fish there thats very good for fish and Chips. There are several names for it, but its Grouper called Lapu Lapu.
I married and was able to live well for 15 years. I was only 47 when I got married. Im 62 now.. Now I can just retire. lol
