the new A-Class IS a cheap car. The worst part is that cheap cars like the A-class diminish the value and prestige of the brand. It's exactly why mercedes quality has been going down the toilet.
Doug, the "Seat Kinetics" feature is primarily intended to address the health concerns of sitting in the same position for long periods of time. It's a really smart feature we're gonna see more often, and it should be standard on every car with power seats (although I think everyone should have the option of turning it off, and going into sport modes should disable it automatically for obvious reasons that it's subtly distracting)
You know, here in Europe, the A class used to be a laughingstock, mocked for being ugly, overpriced and tremendously prone to rollover. An old time classic meme here was the A class having an additional set of wheels on the roof to fix the issue as an option. In all fairness, it was a poor attempt by Mercedes really failing to find a vibe to be a more casual, which is kinda preposterous with that kind of brand image and brand history. But recently, they really upped their game big time. I have the feeling that they want to directly compete with Volkswagen those days. Volkswagen went from the bottom-up in terms of price and features, while Mercedes seems to want to go the top-down way. At the moment here in France, they are marketting A class and B class like crazy, with a mantra about being Mercedes for actual people and not super rich, old people. I think that new A class is really nice in that prospect, directly targeting younger active potential customers, not in the market for an E or even a C class. There IS a market for people wanting some luxury in a compact car in Europe. The wealthiest people here live in city centers and not in the suburbs contrary to the USA. And since European cities are extremely compact compared to American ones, it's often a nightmare to go around and park with a full sedan. People with enough money don't want to be seen at a street corner with a Dacia Logan or Renault Twingo yet that market was not really properly targeted earlier. If Mercedes is able one day to have the luxury of an S class in a compact car, they'll win big time in Europe. For America, those cars will always be confidential I guess, since outside some rare densely populated places like NYC, there is still no real need for a compact car, as space is still plentiful.
over here in southeast asia, small cars are just great since parking is at a premium and usually really tight. more so for people living in an apartment with tight parking. they've always been easy to park but with the addition of modern tech, parking them almost becomes effortless. the only way it could get any easier from there is for the car to park itself.
It’s obnoxious enough to deal with these issues in New York City, though, and the SUV mania is beginning to fade a little in the US, so this is decent for the US market, too.
That warning chime sounds frantic. I don't like it. It's like an 80's horror movie at the scene where the last girl alive is trying to start the car and get away.
"The CLA is no longer the entry level Mercedes Benz, it is replaced by the A Class at $32,500." The CLA came out at $29,900. My, how times have changed.

Just enough power to cruise around? In Europe you can buy e-classes with less power (184 hp) xD this a class is available with only around 120 hp as well. You became a bit crazy about what is an underpowered car after time...

For these reviews of practical weekday cars, you should totally include a safety category (not part of the Doug score, which is could be if you see fit) but just as a visual based on NHTSA or some other car safety distinguishing company just for a reference and that can add onto one of the weekday score categories.
I rented a 2020 Benz C class for 2 weeks in LA. It was a nice ride, but the infotainment system not being touch screen was odd. I also didn't like the stalk for the gear selector. After 2 weeks of driving I got use to it, but I still prefer a center type shifter. It's safety features were top notch. On our departure date, my girlfriend was getting off the 405, she was.... distracted and the auto breaking jarred me from my nap. Saved a front collision which is amazing. Especially with all of the spoiled brats driving their Benz while texting. It had ample power for a 4 cylinder and it made navigating SoCal traffic a breeze. Very responsive. When just puttering it around, it was quiet and docile, but when quick get up and go was needed, the turbo I4 really surprised me. It wasn't an AMG or Vette, throw you back in the seat experience. It was a snappy quick acceleration that will serve the average driver well. I really think the new Benz are an amazing bargain. I don't think I would own one for longer than 3 years, as i feel that the cost of the impending repairs would quickly add up. Trade it in for the new model. Rinse wash repeat.
@@Theaverageazn247 You are sooo wrong. Station wagons and SUVs of the same size have (almost) the same interior space. One has more (useless) ground clearance, worse fuel economy and worse handling. So which one would you get?
@@nathanyoung8284 I'm always surprised about that, because here in Germany the sedan is usally the type of car your old retired neighbours drive, while hatchbacks and wagons are the choice of younger and active people. Besides that: People in southern and eastern Europe prefer sedans, hatchbacks and wagons are only more polular in central and northern Europe.
The model Doug is sitting in cost over 50K, this car makes absolutely no sense. Even at the base price of 32k, why not just get a 2017 E class for 35k, or a C class for even less?...The car makes absolutely no sense and is completely useless.

Cyber Tv 291 for a Mercedes lease is reasonable because then you don’t have to it the unbelievable maintenance cost past 60,000 miles. Anything in the 400 range and you’re better off getting something else
The new A-Class is actually really good in its original hatchback style. The problem here is that in sedan configuration it looks seriously bad. Sedan only works on longer cars.
The original A Class has great visibility and is okay to drive.. But owning one for half a year now.. It is not really a good car.. It is unbalanced, leaning in corners way to much and is not really comfortable.. Also.. have you looked at this car.. who would design such crap.. It does not look good. neither inside or outside. Switching to the more flat design after two generations was the best decision they have made.
Seat kinetics is really great - it helps with soreness on long road trips by moving your posture ever so slightly now and then. This could be replicated in a cheaper car by moving your seat, but this way you don't get too far from your desired seating position and it resets when you park.
Mercedes experience for everybody! Get your own for less than $40k! They should put option to read codes straight from the infotainment system. Now you know what broke without even visiting the service! Ohhh the future. (some cars have or had that in the past)
Isnt it always like this or do I understand something wrong? At least here in Germany cars are lighting up all check lights when you start the engine for a few seconds
@@Flyfan24 ALL of the accessory lights stay on for maybe half of a second. These lights were on from start to finish. Also, when those lights first come on they all light up (oil temp coolant etc) not just the airbag and check engine.
The kinetic seats minutely move the various adjustments back and forth. This is supposed to ease discomfort on long drives by giving you varying seating positions.
Car2Go will also use them, lol. That said, I'm interested in the soon-to-be-released A35 AMG Hatch as a slightly nicer alternative to the VW Golf R. A GLA35 AMG would also be tempting. (Note: I'm Canadian, so I can buy the A hatch).

I will point out that in the US, a lot of people favor such smaller cars because of fuel consumption and maneuverability as well as cost.
