12:00 The way those cupholders work is that the left button with the champagne holders brings out a lower piece of nice wood and chrome, but the other button when pressed brings out a different top part made of nice wood and chrome with regular cupholders
Yes you can see that one piece of wood is inset into the drawer and the other is on top. Very cool feature.
The backseat/intercom part was hilarious. Doug’s the type of guy who can laugh at himself and have fun. Not something seen much these days. That’s what makes these videos fun too, love it.

I want to point a thing, Maybach's names are actually their lengths in meters. 62 is roughly 6.2 meters (244 inches) and 57 is roughly 5.7 meters (224 inches). So when Doug mentions 62 as "chauffeurs' car" and 57 as "drivers car", remember that the "Short Wheel Base" version is actually 5.7 meters long which makes it longer than every single F segment car including their LWB variants. Im talking about BMW 7 series, Mercedes S Class, Audi A8; the SWB Maybach is longer.
I started following this channel for the reviews of 90´s JDMs and super cars but these LUXURY car reviews are probably the most entertaining. 😄

I’m suprised that doug didn’t have someone drive him around while sitting in the back to see how that feels.
Yes - until he does, I consider this review incomplete.

He called his car dad Jay Leno, but he was busy practicing by roleplaying his knowledge about his cars with himself.
Doug's the type of guy to get picked up in one of these and sit in the front seat.
I kind of expected a two part test drive.
The Maybach 62 is truly a magnificent car. Keeping in mind that Doug is over 6'3'' the front seat is not
as cramped as purported. Also, the big issue with this car is maintenance cost, which is prohibitive
for most drivers.
Ok I've been binging these vids and the FUN he had with telecom is right up there with my FAVORITE Douge FUN moments, even over the faces/ reactions to the speedier cars. He's just a regular ole car nerd like so many of us

Doug, whenI worked for Lucent Technologies in the early 2000’s, our Denver Executive Briefing Center had similar glass. In the main briefing room there was a long conference table, the back wall was opaque glass, about 30’ long. The executive briefer when they wanted to could press a button, instantly the opaque glass became crystal clear, showcasing the Definity PBX Cabinets and other data gear.
It’s electrically charged glass, called…Snap Glass.

When I started this video, I thought to myself: this is going to be the longest "quirks and features" segment yet. I was not disappointed.
This car is the living proof that technology that will be ‘common’ in 20 years is already available, but too expensive to put into cars. Mercedes really went all out on this. Really impressive.
Even today, I'm somewhat impressed by some of its features such as the auto-tinting sunroof and self closing doors.

What I don't understand is a) why all the buttons are still plastic, and b) why they didn't add the option for fogging all the windows, not just the sunroof. Much classier than the curtains.

The 2000's Maybach [especially the 57, which is somewhat better proportioned than the 62] is one of the best looking ultra luxury cars ever, I reckon. It gave a lot of design cues to the contemporary Merc S class and various other car makers.

I’d rather be in this than any other new roll Royce, Bentley or Mercedes nice car, this seems so nice and comfortable. This one of the best cars I’ve ever seen and it would be so nice to take a long road trip in this car.

Honestly as a person in 2023 if I could ride this car I would in a heartbeat!!! Awesome car and even with some outdated features I would be VIBING in the back. Absolute luxury and so well thought out. An amazing car. Mercedes always killing it with that amazing ride quality too. When I was a teen my rich uncle gave my mom his Mercedes to take care of while he wasn’t driving it for a few years and that thing was AMAZING. I went from a Toyota Avalon to absolute smooth driving. There’s nothing like it! If I thought that was good I’m sure this car is like driving on air! Amazing car and I hope I can ride in one even once in my lifetime!

In 2005, I was in Manhattan and out on the town one night. I walked up on a brand new luxury sedan parked just down the block from the Plaza Hotel. Such a beautiful car, super classy looking. It had a hood badge I hadn't seen before. At the time I'd never heard of the Maybach brand. I was very impressed by the full curtains (which were drawn for privacy). There was a bodyguard/driver standing outside of the car. This was the ride of someone at the height of society. I was having a cool NYC moment. To my delight, the rear door swung open and out came a foot, a leg, followed by the silhouette of this mysteriously elegant maverick. The bodyguard extends his arm to block me from passing in front of his boss and I'm so excited to see who I assume is going to be one of the most influential and memorable encounters of my life......the figure slowly turns and the lights from the city street illuminate his face, revealing the now infamous and notorious..............R. Kelley.
Wonder what he was doing in there. Bet it involved the fancy little mirrors.

I would love to have one, but there's one fatal deal breaker -- I wouldn't always be driven around, I would drive a lot by myself... The front seats can't recline and they don't move back much, even Doug barely fits in there, I'm a bit taller than Doug, so no Maybach 62 for me. :(

I'm aware that this is extremely late but the solar panels in the sunroof was a design feature borrowed from Mazda! The HE series 929/Luce had an (admittedly very expensive) option where the solar panels powered the climate fan, just like this car! The HE series sold very poorly, and the solar panel option wasn't very popular even among those that did sell, so it's very rare to find them.
I felt I recognized the area, and noticed it’s my local track haha. That’s definitely aviation and Manhattan! :)
Besides the screens and styling, this car is pretty timeless. The interior holds it's own even 15+ years later.

@@Fifthcell these luxury cars have deprecated in value super fast. Look at some of the Japanese cars from the 90’s like the Supra’s and Mazda’s going for what this maybach is going for. They keep going up in value. Crazy.
You can get the 57 version without the separate Fond for around 40k€, but the cheapest 62 with the fond wall etc in Germany is 100k.
And that one doesn’t have all the options Dougies version has, it lacks the amazing sunroof and the shades for the fond windows.
If you want all that you still pay around 150k€ (which is around 180k$ or so I think), which is still stupid money for such an old car.
But if you want that much privacy, I guess that’s what you need to pay.
If you can get one with all that options for under 50k$ in the US, I want one!
I’ll let my wife drive me around every day, haha.

My 2004 VW Phaeton had some of the features that were quirks of this car (the sun visor, the heated/cooled rear seats w/ Massage feature etc). a the time it felt so cutting edge (had Nav w/ color screen, & vents that hid themselves behind wood). i totally miss that car. anyways memory lane aside. Great review on all the features of the Maybach & just how truly opulent it was & how amazing it coudl have been if they'd punched it up a little style wise.

I used to work at an arena in Detroit that the pistons played at and a basketball player by the name of rip Hamilton had one of these. I’m told the owner of the pistons bought one of these cars for the starting 5 players who won the 2004 nba championship. It would also make sense that these were popular with pro athletes as the back of the car had so much leg room and a run of the mill NBA player is like 6’5 to 6’8

I know how the magic cup holder works, it’s quite simple. The drawer that pops out is completely hollow - the buttons only change which wood insert slides out. One with holes and one that is flat.
My S-Class has the sunshades plus 5% tint all around and 35% on the windshield. I just lack the partition but for my rear passengers, they can ride in privacy. If I had this car I would definitely put 5% tint on the windows and partion for extra darkness and privacy. Too bad there's a center console in the back 🙂
