+Tim “Tmillz” Miller interesting points ,if anyone else wants to discover making model railway buildings try Boshapra Amazing Scenery Boffin (just google it ) ? Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my m8 got cool results with it.
Man, i love these videos, while hes creating i picture what i want, and the narrator rlly brings out in what i want in my dream, im completely new, O-scale to! And i see this, and it puts a foot into the door for me, got a whole room dedicated to the train set, and i got little cars to go with it, i can play with that while i have my conductors hat on, and move the train around the set, love this hobby so much!:) Great video buddy!
i dont collect trains, im a wargamer by nature, but this video was fantastic and showed me alot of things that will help me in my next board or display piece. Thanks guys!
wow this is really handy for beginners in making model train sets ive began making my model train layout and this video made it a whole lot easier. THANKS GREATESTHOBBY!
I actually used that ground cover method on my current train layout; painting the plywood in earth and green colors (depending on the area) and sprinkling the ground foam turf (it's even by the same brand: Woodland Scenics!) It looks much better than the grass mat I used on my old layout. Since I didn't use roadbed track, I also applied ballast to the track after it was laid, and it looks pretty good.
For the currently layout I built after that one after our move into our current house, I again used that same ground cover method, painting the insulation foam base in the earth colors and sprinkling the ground foam turf in areas requiring grass (mostly using Woodland Scenics and Life-Like's grass material) and Woodland Scenics gray "gravel" for the railroad yard.
Very straightforward techniques with the right amount of instruction to make it good for beginners without being boring for more advanced builders. My only suggestion is to offer alternatives, where reasonable, to ready-to-use products from a specific manufacturer. While these products have a place, using them for everything adds a lot of avoidable expense and does not encourage as much creativity.
I started working on my railroad dream this month. I have 7 10" fastrack straights, 1 5" fastrack straight, 1 uncoupling section, 8 pieces of curve track, some rolling stock and a 0-8-0 Lionchief PRR steamer.
to the one posting this (if your the one that made the video) the scenery techniques and all are fine.. so it the track and such, but so many people are now losing their homes or have family move in that there isn't going to be space for 4X8 layouts anymore.. they weren't really that great anyway. You have to start going more like europe and japan plus like "long time modelers" and do the layout along the wall. Shelf layouts or free standing as they don't take up much space and more designs.
Definitely a good way to start the hobby. However, I would choose hand-made structures instead (made of balsa wood, styrene or, even, thin cardboard. In that case, it would be necessary to purchase the doors and windows). Also, making the grass with wood sand does´t make a layout look worse (even though its a kind of a cliché) while it's a much cheaper alternative. Concerning to the trees, little pieces of real trees sticks (specially fork-shaped ones) with some green painted pillow synthetic foam on them are an alternative.
you could add a switch track that leads off to an area were you want to eventually extend it,or have your coal factory on an end section on outside of overall main line for a future extension.. Going forth into bigger layouts at start, will really hurt you in the long run easier to start with a basic like this one but customize it to your fashion.
Looks great, & I haven't done a layout yet.... but why leave the track down and tape it? Can't you make the track layout & remove the track to avoid getting plaster, paint, foam, and/or ground cover all over it?
There are many factors in building a railroad layout. One place I discovered which succeeds in merging these is the Jareks hobby club (check it out on google) definately the best blueprint i've seen. Check out the awesome information .
To Yaseen Gate Satellite, Stop these cheeky advertisements! There are plenty of resources available for free and there is no need to pay for information on this subject.
I am considering putting Hydrocal on all exposed foam to protect it, because most likely that would be the place where the foam would end up being smashed or cracked somehow.
I got a 3ft by 8ft(with a cutaway in the town section taking it down to 2&1/2ft ) and a 1x3 secondary area through two portals nothing but foam and a dream so far though
Mario man I have good luck with grey poster board. Rip them where they end and create a ragged cut instead of a unreal straight cut. I am sure there ate other alternatives than a putty knife.
32Jonathan32 I also hate plastering. I use roof shingles for grass and ballast and dirt. I use insulation boards to create my different elevations, never polystyrene. I make use of different grades of aquarium gravel as well, especially for my rock quarry. And I use cotton balls for trees and shrubs along with pencil shaver waste to use as texture for the cotton balls. There is more than one way to scratch a cat. There is no need to spend a fortune to create a great layout.
@Xenomorph237 one thing you can do is use cooking foil, wrap it into a ball then unwrap it, then apply plaster to the dull side of the foil then once it has dried, peel off the foil, and you have a rock face!
I'm trying to make the maddison central layout. But what sucks is that I can't find Don's Shoe Store, Adam's Ribs, Bill's Glass Shop, Nor Merchants row lll.
the only close hobby shop around here is hobby lobby can u send me a link to a hobby shop online cause our hobby lobby dosnt have ho scale vehicles or ppl only everything else
I watched all of these videos with my father 10+ years ago when I was a child. Fun to watch them again :)

Excellent video to help get entry level modelers going strong. It's a shame so many punks have to leave their crappy posts for others to see.
Thank you so much for this tutorial, guys!
Pro tips. Could save tons of time and headaches. Thanks so much!
Got some great ideas from this and other parts thanks for showing it.
Exactly why do people leave crappy comments on a great video series on how to get started in a great hobby.

+The World's Greatest Hobby. Good job man :) This really inspired me to make my own layout. Which I'm currently planning to make.

I'm about to make my layout this summer

i'm doing this tomorrow
nice job
make more vids
good
I plan to build this later in n scale and attach it to my other n layout.

now that the smooth it and hydrocal are dry now comes the fun part scenery.

You know, that would have been simpler. Dick, use common sense...
thats really cool

why does it feel like my life savings is about to be thrown out the window?
Probably is as a wise man once said "My heart says HO my wallet says N"
@@ethanbarnett1747.....you in debt?
Cuz they are
How long did it take you to build this layout, because I am planning to build one in my garage?
So tell me! what color is the ground cover Mister GreatestHobby?
hey, um what style ground cover did you use? coarse, fine? a mix? and what shade?
wait, could you tell me how to make a tunnel? HELP its too late to go back, step by step, best method and i sub!
and about how long does it need to dry? before it becomes solid
most of the video is great but the roads could have been done better

Yes

Any ideas how to convert a flat setup to a hilly setup?
+Pendleton 115 Look at how he made the hills in the corner. Use the same technique.
I just found out sadly the guy in this video Dick Cecil passed away over the weekend. RIP

Where do u get realistic water? please reply to this asap. i need it for my project
if you have lights in the buildings you shouldn't glue them. this makes it easier to replase bulbs
i used to be the only one watching this, but thats was 2 years ago
Nice work but why use that cheap track? Why not use cork and ballast?
Maybe it is ideal track for beginners.
don't glue them. you'll have to reach around them and such for cleaning and they WILL get bumped.. just keep them loose.
im starting now
with this i will fix the world
*holds up ground cover
how long did it take to make that
the only close hobby shop around here is hobby lobby can u send me a link to a hobby shop online cause our hobby lobby dosnt have ho scale vehicles or ppl only everything else
This will be good for a user called calleyfan because he has a lionel set
what kind of track do you use.
@1991conrail thanks!
heh heh 1:49 no pun intended
