    I found a shortcut which is to cut squares of Ditra the same size as your tiles and stick them to each tile. Then you can put down the tile and the Ditra at the same time only using thinset. I've done at least 30 kitchens this way and it saves a ton of time if I have a helper do this task before I get there.

      Hi there! The best practice for installing DITRA is to follow the steps as shown in our video and the DITRA Installation Handbook. This gives the best opportunity for a successful installation, ensuring proper thin-set mortar coverage for the membrane, as well as the tiles on top. Please note that this technique will not only provide insufficient uncoupling to the tiles and grout, it will also void any warranty. If you have any questions, please contact our Customer Support Team at 800-472-4588 (US) or 800-667-8746 (CA).

    Just having a discussion about going over control joints. According to ditra installation handbook it says to honor them. Doesn’t say put soft joints at random location every 16-20’

    • @LightGesture
      @LightGesture 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      TCNA handbook states every 16-20' and the tile dictates what is necessary. Not every tile is the same

    It’s adhered to the slab with thinset? How does that not remove uncoupling attributes of membrane?

      Hi there! The DITRA and DITRAXL are polyethylene membranes with a grid structure of square cavities, each cut back in a dovetail configuration, and an anchoring fleece laminated to the underside. The anchoring fleece is embedded in thin-set mortar to provide a mechanical bond to the substrate. The membranes provide uncoupling through its open rib structure, which allows for in-plane movement. Hope that helps!

      The modified thinset (all set) is awesome but a little pricey

    How many millimeters can the ditra system "bridge" before the tension breaks the tile?

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, DITRA can be used to bridge in-plane cracks in concrete slabs (e.g., shrinkage cracks, control joints, saw cuts), up to 1/4" (6 mm) in width. DITRA is not separated at such cracks; however, surface movement joints must be provided at the appropriate place in the tile covering in accordance with the Schluter®-DITRA Installation Handbook.

      @@schlutersystems1 up to 6mm if shrinkage cracks are already on the surface before laying the Ditra or even if the cracks happen after applying Ditra and tiles?
      Thanks in advance

    Nothing over 70# but you can walk over it right away??

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With a 75# roller, you will have much less area in contact with the surface than you would with a person walking on it, so that would raise the point load quite a bit. This is the reason it is best to keep the roller to 75# or below. Hope this helps!

    can you install over floorboards

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. DITRA can be installed over properly fastened 3/4"+ structural plank subfloors when a minimum 1/2" plywood or OSB underlayment is installed over the subfloor. Please see the Structural Plank Subfloor detail in the DITRA Installation Handbook for complete details.

    Can I apply Ditra uncoupling membrane over a painted concrete floor?

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Rich! The DITRA Installation Handbook states "slab to be free of waxy or oily films and curing compounds (when present, mechanical scarifying is necessary)". Paint can be a bond breaker for thin-set, so it's best to remove. So even a crack isolation doesn't cover crack isolation without a soft joint?

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Crack isolation membrane companies have requirements in their literature regarding soft joint placement when their membrane products are installed over cracks, which point back to details (F125 - Partial or F125-Full) in the TCNA Handbook. This is to help address the movement accommodation in the assembly.

    So not needed when going over a mortar bed that is unbounded to a wooden subfloor?

    • @schlutersystems1

      Hi Ryan, For mortar beds, you would install KERDI waterproofing membrane over top. For more, have a look here: sccpublic.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/sys-master/images/h14/hb0/8984385519646/Shower%20System%20Installation%20Handbook.pdf

    What is a soft joint?

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael, A "soft joint" or "surface joint" provides stress relief from movement in the tile field due to thermal and moisture expansion/contraction and loading of the tile. These are used in the tile field as well as at the perimeters.
      Please see the "Movement Joint" section of the DITRA Installation Handbook (current pages 14-16) for complete details about movement joints. sccpublic.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/sys-master/images/h66/h6e/8917114126366/DITRA%20Installation%20Handbook.pdf

      An example would be a grout joint that you fill with a caulk that matches the color of the grout. That caulk/silicone is flexible and allows movement where grout won't allow movement.

    Can I use DITRA on my apartment's top floor ? Some people will bring their clothes and quilt on the top floor for drying under the sun shine. Could it possible that their step or the clotheshorse damage the DITRA ???

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ren, Ditra is meant to be installed under tile and should not be left exposed to the elements or wear-and-tear. You can read more here: www.schluter.com/schluter-us/en_US/Membranes/Uncoupling-%28DITRA%29/Schluter%C2%AE-DITRA-%26-DITRA-XL/p/DITRA
