During old days nasi kandar is the food for labours and poorest…nowdays nasi kandar for richers even some of middle class cant afford to eat them anymore
But local nasi kandar is usually still affordable
to beat price woes ; eat once in 2 months. My first experience at Penang's Hameediya is Nasi Bryani tambah Ayam Goreng kampung (RM24) plus veggie long bean (the yummiest ever eaten (RM2.50) last month Nov. 2023 : total bill RM30 for 1 person One plate :
back then in certain places of course theres less dishes to be presented . Like westeners introduced kfc mcd stuff but the same thing you compare the price nowadays . It just plenty of food now why need to eat nasi kandar everyday ?
Yes, lamb shank, chicken kapitan with either their fried prawn or sotong goreng and briyani rice is the way to go for me

used to be a weekly place for my family from SP to eat here when there still a old shop with tables. I loved the beryani rice but now soo hard to get a table because of the long queue and I heard the price already went up

Even as an Indian, I wouldn't want to mix all the curries together. But I would still want to try their dishes (individually)!
But curries in India taste terrible whether you mix them or not. Had it twice when I was in Delhi and had food poisoning both times at different restaurant. Really not worth the trip. I suspect it is the water, it tastes funny. I heard from my guide they cremate and dispose corpses and carcass into the river and drink from it. Hope wasn’t the case for me.

They tend to overcook the fish and squids.
Uncle, some people said also add ganja to make curry nicer. True ka? 😄
They use kaskas (poppy seed) not ganja..ganja leaf just for the rice when cook. But now not sure their use kaskas or not in nasik kandar gravy
I’m sorry I stopped patronizing mamak shops because of this stigma of sputum in my food.
Looks nice, take squids, prawns, lamb shank will set you back more than 100 buck one person.

I was about to have dinner at B Bintang last night. However my Singapore guests declined. Was it so so only? Nothing great to shout about?
@@giant108 You should try Nasi Kandar Hameediyah in Bukit Bintang because I feel it is the first Nasi Kandar restaurant with a high-end concept. As for taste, it is subjective. For me, Hameediyah easily ranks in the top 3 Nasi Kandar in Malaysia that I have ever tasted because it has its own unique identity and taste. "makan tutup mata pun boleh teka nasi kandar mana". In terms of price, it is slightly higher in Bukit Bintang, ranging from RM0.50-2.00 compared to prices at other branches of Hameediyah due to the area and concept offered.
@@aminziqreemohdazlee Just curious to know about the average price of Hameediyah@Bukit Bintang for a plate of nasi kandar with only a piece of chicken & some cabbage. I suggested to have it last week with a childhood classmate. He declined as he told me nasi kandar isn't his favorite.

I never get the appeal of having your rice drowning in sauces. Its more like souces with some side of rice 😅.
apparently that is how Nasi Kandar is served but you can always customize the sauces to your liking
Only for tourists. Penangnites will never go there. Just like the cendol.
Mediocre nasi kandar at best, with a high premium to boot
Their food is tasty for sure BUT they are not the best. There are other nasi kandar outlets in Penang that are very good. Not Line Clear, not Beratur. Those are tourist attractions.

@@corgansow6173 … no best as they have variations in taste. Good ones, the ones worth visiting are like (not definitive ok):
- Nasi Kandar Merlin (breakfast to lunch time)
- Nasi Kandar Rafee (breakfast - supper)
- Nasi Kandar Bangkok Lane (mornings only, curries are light but flavourful)
There are others too. Equally as good.

@corgansow6173 buddy,I'm still on a nasi kandar epiphany in P.Pinang. Still ongoing BUT thus far the taste at Deen in Jln Gurudwara and Nasi Kandar Datuk Keramat outstrips Hameediyah. Watch this space when I'm done.
Average taste and expensive food. They may be legendary, but other Nasi Kandar shops have clearly leapfrogged them
