It was extremely popular on Skulltag, to the point where the only consistently populated servers were GvH ones where traditional Doom deathmatch/coop servers sat mostly empty for months.
I absolutely loved classic GvH down to the Santa update. I hosted servers of the 2b8 version until 3 came out. Great times were had, also it's worth mentioning YureiBattle, a full on proper boss battle against the Yurei which was hard as balls but pretty fun, and multiplayer compatible as well
Gotta love that you didn't skip over the real gore Mike snuck into GF3. Doom modding could get fucking dark back in the day. I think out of the classic doom levels(not counting final doom) e2m4 was the scariest in terms of atmosphere. Also the sheer contrast between how e2m3 starts - instantly getting into the action by throwing 2 imps or more at the start and cacos acting as turrets in the cages up ahead. E2m4 starts out in a dim lit corridor with slow ass music and a chorus of voices. Huge difference

Just pure dread, yet intoxicating enough that I still proceeded to play it.
Glad you gave Myhouse recognition it deserves, this mod is absolute modding masterpiece and one of best games you can play in your life. I still dont get why it happened but im so glad it did. Perfect House of Leeves interpretation in Doom engine before Alan Wake II who also reaches from that book.
Ghoul's Forest was in Cutman's own words strongly inspired by a game from his youth, The Forbidden Forest, a title for Commodore 64 where you play as a hunter with bow and arrow, fighting various monsters and creatures in a forest (a forbidden one!) as the night grows darker and darker. It was a very ambitious title which made the most with the hardware, it's very detailed and good looking for a home computer game of its time. The first two Ghoul's Forest .wads are more simple, but Mike put a lot of additional effort into making the third one much more like The Forbidden Forest, with multiple different ghouls doing different things, arrows you would have to draw on your bowstring before firing, a limited supply of them, and then a final boss which draws ever closer and closer to you. This also makes the .wad All Ghost's Forest a demake of a remake, which I think is a funny thought. Extremely well executed demake, too.
