    QUESTION: Do you feel climate change is playing a role in intensifying these storms? If not, what is?

    • @erice5150
      @erice5150 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Climate change always feels like fighting words. It’s always changing. I think my issue is climate change can find its way into a lot of discussions and I’m not sure if it’s because it’s overbroad or literally the aftermath of the changing climate.
      I can say for certain these storms don’t feel the way they did before. I hope for the types of storms I remember from when I was younger… instead of this “all at once” situation

      I remember the Sacramento area floods of 1986 and 1997. Those storm periods were no joke did a lot of damage. They seemed pretty intense. I think the thing that makes this one stand out is the long period of dry winters we've had (where people forget how winter actually is) and the elevated sensitivity to global warming, climate change and the pushback against it.

      These storms are not as bad as the ones in the past. 1968 had far worse storms and the term "climate change" had not been invented yet. That term is way overblown. Weather is always changing. Back and forth. Up and down. California is the land of extremes. And everybody with any level of education knows that. Also the AR storms of the 1800,s were much worse than anything these days. What makes these storms so much worse is all the developed land. When rain falls on a roof or driveway or street it runs off right away...not into the ground.

      Drought conditions open up a lot of space for surface air circulation. Vegetation is thinned. Erosion makes channels wider and deeper and hills steeper. Steeper hills entail steeper updrafts.
      Changes in solar heating of surfaces lead to changes in atmospheric circulation.
      Climate change is a boogeyman. It's just weather.

    • @Jefuslives
      @Jefuslives ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The facts of climate change aren't affected by our feelings about it. The science tells us that wider extremes in weather will result from a warming climate, and the observations back that up.

    Watching from Oregon. Some folks are really good at their job. Is there an Oscar for this ?
    If there's an award in this category Monica should get one. She doesn't just explain the weather, she makes you 'feel it'. Beneficially hazardous - got it.
    She's like a Ted Talk on California weather systems and hydrology. I am much better informed by listening to her. Well done ABC10

    Spend your time listening to the detailed, weather commentary on Monica's Atmospheric River, rather than watching the Oscars smack, it's fascinating, but doesn't help CA residents, who run out of home. broken doors because of natural disasters, a lifetime of construction workers is empty-handed, where is humanity, where is compassion, Americans now, are no longer like the old days, they are too selfish, have lost the good spirit of mutual support of American people in the past .... !!!

    In an ironic illustration of the 'double edged sword' effect of this phenomenon, the big reservoirs so depleted by the drought have been collecting water that would have compounded problems in the Sacramento and American rivers are now full with no alternative but to release the overflow. Great news that the reservoirs are full again. Bad news that all of this tremendous snowpack will mean a miserable spring for many.

      @@w.p8140 You could sit in your car with the window down and the heater on, ice-fishing on Lake Erie and Ontario. That ended a long time ago. They don't freeze over, what moderates us. Birds don't fly south. Crops that began to grow during a January thaw would die when freezing again, losing that, growing canola for oil. Record wind, water and ice levels have decimated the Lake Erie shore. A thirty foot wall of ice was pushed ashore in Fort Erie, moving houses and cottages. I'm going for long distance bike-hikes, nice for me, but not nice for what I see. A forest beside Buffalo Beach had all the ground cover washed away, replaced by over a foot of sand. That made me a stranger in a stranger land.

      @@johnwattdotca Jonh when you where ice-fishing in your car with the window down and the heater on..Was the car running so the battery wouldn't go flat Jonh, Because that wouldn't be very good burning all that fossil fuel while your fishing putting all that carbon monoxide in to the atmosphere, I hear thats one of the main contributers to global warming..But at least Buffalo beach is nice and sandy...And Jonh we all love the beach, So just grab a couple beers and go fishing John...🐳🐋🐬🐠🐡🦈🐙🍺🍻

    For 50 years weather men called these rain squalls , "Pinapple express" cause these rains come from the tropics around Hawaii. Then something happened, the reliable weathermen retired, new weather people took over and changed the definition of "Pinapple Express" which everyone easily undstood, they changed it to "Atmospheric River" that makes NO sense. The rains still come from the Hawaii tropics and its still a normal yearly weather condition. change your words back to what we all undersand. b.t.y. THERE IS NO MODEL THAT SAYS THERE WILL BE 100MPH WINDS ANYWHERE IN THE SIERRA MOUNTAINS. GUST WILL BE 45 MPH MAX. ON TUESDAY.
