One way of starting from scratch is to imagine you have experienced a catastrophe. Hopefully, this will never happen to you, but when I evacuated for Katrina, I had limited funds (local bank account was frozen). I went to Target and bought bargain versions of a presentable wardrobe: 2 pairs well fitting jeans, 2 nice T-shirts, a lightweight blazer in a plaid earthtone palette, and the Target version of Frye harness boots. En route to my final destination, I visited my brother's young family in a Chicago suburb. I was treated to a hair appointment and afterwards stopped at a hospital thrift shop where I 'scored' a new black cashmere turtleneck. I later found a man's smaller size Harris tweed jacket and an oversized denim jacket at another thrift. Fewer than 10 items got me through a Wisconsin autumn.
So this may be a nosy question, but I'm curious about why your local bank account was frozen...if it was for a personal reason, that's understandable, but if it had something to do with the evacuation/impending catastrophe, then why?
What a lovely video, thank you Jennifer! May I make a suggestion for the ‘maybe-pile’? It’s from the wonderful Diane in Denmark (she is also on YT). She suggests wearing your maybe-clothes for a day ‘on probation’. This way you will quickly experience why you never reach for this item (too itchy, too tight, etc). After that it’s easy to let it go. No need to store it for 6 months or feel guilt. I hope this helps! Best wishes from the Netherlands!
It takes time but it is possible to find quality clothing at thrift stores. Some of us have tight budgets but that doesn’t mean we can’t dress nicely. 🙂
Thank you, Jennifer, for sharing the video. I am originally Japanese and your book (Lessons from Madame Chic) was introduced in a Japanese paper 7 or 8 years ago. The Japanese title of the book was like "French has only 10 wardrobe." I was so fascinated by this title and purchased the book immediately. I don't have so much clothes now as I used to do. But, thanks to you, it is so much easier to choose my daily outfit and enjoy combining the clothes that I have.
Thrifting helped me so much when I realized that I wanted to over haul my wardrobe from frumpy, baggy, unkept, stay-at-home-mom, to reflect my true personality. I made a lot of experimental mistakes and it was nice when I had only spent $4 on each item that I ended up realizing that I didn’t like, and vice versa. Also, aligning with aesthetic styles that I was attracted to really helped narrow down what felt like “me”. I really love a rugged, feminine, Boho style. But I also love the look of a 1940s archeologist/explorer. So as long as I have both these elements in my wardrobe, I feel like “me”.
I do keep older, less favorite garments for wearing while doing grungy chores, painting walls, etc. I have a work clothes section in my closet. Thank you for your great tips and encouragement. 💕
I started completely over. I didn’t have a lot to begin with but I hated it. The key for me was shopping second hand near wealthy neighborhoods. My aunt told me about a second hand store near her that had incredible name brand clothing for under $4 a piece with specialty items marked at $10 or $20. It is right next to a wealthy neighborhood. I make the drive 1.5 hrs away seasonally and stock up for less than $100. Life changing! I am excited to get dressed now!
Thank you so much for this video. I do have a capsule wardrobe. Interstingly, like you, I also have lost weight, and have quality items that are too large at this point. Instead of donating them, I have a wonderful tailor that I take everything to, and will do so in this situation as well. I look forward to creating new outfits with my once-again well fitting wardrobe!
You introduced me to the brand Karina. I love their dresses with huge pockets and now, only wear dresses. If it’s chilly (I live in Florida), I add a sweater and/or leggings. Seven dresses make up my entire seasonal wardrobe. There is absolutely no thinking of what to wear each day! It’s simply the dress on the left side of the row of dresses.
Thank you for this inspiring video! I have a tip-do this on laundry day. You can see all the clothes you chose not to wear that week-and then it's easier to notice what you are continually not choosing to wear, and make a decision 🙂
I’m so guilty of holding onto old items I went clubbing in 😂 ..but since watching you, it’s helped me to be more realistic about letting go of sentimental items. I’m almost 40! And I also have changed internally; desiring to be more modest ❤
So I don’t know how 10 items will work for me. Because our life style includes many different aspects. Church, Civic, government, corporate, maritime etc😊
This is wonderful Jennifer, thank you for sharing guidance and motivation in this area. I’d love to hear your views on the KIBBE body test and perhaps how you found your seasonal color palette. I find all of this so very helpful in building true style. Gros Bisous ! ♥️
I needed to pack clothes for a week trip to Europe in the fall. I had to share half of the suitcase with my kids. Before running to the store I shopped my closet for a capsule 10 piece wardrobe. At the beggining was stressful but at the end was satisfying.
Jennifer, I have just finished reading your book and I must say that I really loved it, I found it very inspiring. We currently live so carelessly, that is is really refreshing to be reminded that it may be different. However, I found in your book one very problematic thing: promoting “fois gras”. Geese in France are treated with such a horribly cruelty, that United Kingdom and Poland even introduced a ban on importing fois gras. I hope you will make in any next edition a correction and remove this fragment. I wish you all the best!
Love all your content and books. My biggest challenge with the 10 item wardrobe is that I work full time and need to balance a professional closet with what I wear chasing toddlers on evenings and weekends. Would love to see a video illustrating how this concept would work for such a scenario.
I love this whole philosophy! Thanks to you, Jennifer, my closet is a joy to walk into! For me, it wasn’t easy. I was clinging to my comfortable sweatpants. Might I suggest that you mention that for some, The Lethal Option is the only way to go. What do I mean by The Lethal Option? Donate, kicking and screaming, your “safety blanket” clothes. Every. Last. Piece. Otherwise, you will do what I did and wear the ONE track suit (sweats and sweatshirt) you permitted yourself to keep, EVERY day🤣 while beautiful dresses hung in my closet, unworn. What on EARTH was preventing me? It was so strange, and I guess I really needed that wakeup call to take the leap and let go of “the old me”. It was a HUGE leap! But worth it!❤
I am looking forward to tackling my closet next month when my spring clothes return! I definitely need to be firmer with myself on the maybe-to-donate pipeline. It's hard because I have been trying to lose weight for a while now and I love all my clothes that are too snug on me right now. I do store them outside of my closet space to avoid overcrowding, but I still know they're there!
Hi Jennifer! The ten item wardrobe concept is what hooked me when I started following your channel many years ago - in addition to who you are: your authenticity and pleasant demeanor. 🥰 I can attest to the ten item wardrobe giving clarity. Whenever I choose my 10 items & extras at the beginning of each season, I have many “ah-ha” moments as to why I am not as inclined to wear, for example, a particular pair of pants over another. This clarity helps me to hone in on my true style and what works best for my lifestyle. I get many comments from friends saying that I am always well-dressed. 💁🏻♀️ Thank you for all your guidance! ~Emilie
As I was watching this video I realized I have done the 10 item wardrobe for 10 years now! It has worked so well for me over the years. I have adapted it slightly, as I live in an area where the weather is very varied. And it is great! I've tried other capsule wardrobes too, but I always come back to the 10 item wardrobe. So thank you, Jennifer 😊
I get inspiration for classic, sophisticated and still stylish and modest clothing from a channel that uploads many short videos….Nikki from Treating the Streets like a Runway. Her smiles are infectious and truly makes the saying so true….You are never truly dressed without your smile😊
I think this has to be my favourite video of yours as ut came just in time. I feel like my wardrobe is in crisis and my personal style non existent. I have a lot of clothes I've been struggling with and by your definition rhey don't belong in my wardrobe but I have been having something inside me just keeping me from doing something about them. You've given me a lot of direction, thank you.
Hello Jennifer, thank you for breaking it down so easily. This video inspired me to empty out my drawers and get rid of about 15 shirts/dresses that were a polyester blend when I want to switch to natural fabrics. Just the beginning...
This is such a great idea! I have tried capsule wardrobes (more than 10 items) and I can’t seem to get rid of things I don’t wear. I feel motivated to do that now. Your style is beautiful and I see myself wearing similar clothing (although I live in Minnesota so need warmer clothes). Thank you!
I can relate to getting rid of things that are no longer an indication of my style. Our tastes change through the years and my love for less quantity and more quality has made for a beautiful closet over here in my world 😊Thank you for this nice video …
Thank you so much for writing your book Lessons From Madame Chic. I read the chapter on her style. I laughed as you described how you felt when she turned to tell you bluntly the color you were wearing didn't suit you. It inspired me to step back and take a look at what few items I had in my closet compared to what I had just purchased. I was happy with my recent purchase, but not the old ones. They are in a bag for a local clothes closet where I live.
Dear Jennifer. Words can not describe how much inspiration and beauty you bring into my world. The ten ítem wardrobe is my inspiration for every season and I can not wait to see your spring one. Thank you so much. I wish you , and all friends here a beautiful week. Best regards from Spain 🌼
Absolutely love the inspiration on how to get to the FINE choices of limited but high quality clothing and accessories. I am still progressing toward few, but superb quality items that are fully worth the expense. Grateful for a dose of added mindset change!!
You inspired me. Again. Ha! I have moved out of the rhythm of being pregnant every 2-3 years, but ahem, my wardrobe didnt. I literally had to realize even after kids, the clothes i had cycled through, and the pre-baby clothes that are never to be wearable need to go. It is joyful to purge and joyous to share in donation to the pregnancy relief clinics. It was embarassing to take such massive numbers of clothes out!
I found this video very helpful and more of an explanation and system for the 10 item wardrobe. I have not had trouble with choosing the 10 core items, but still struggle with the extras and feel I have too many items. We moved a few years ago where there is 4 distinct seasons; which may be the reason for the struggle with the extras. I am still a work in progress.
I'm guilty of having all the seasons in my closet! My jackets and coats rob much of the space... But i'm mindfull of my choices now. Thank you for your inspiration!!
Wonderful idea to focus on a few high quality pieces. I have all my clothing out at one time so will try packing the off season items away to truly see what I might be missing and to wear my fav pieces!
Great advice in this video!! I live in Central NY and our temperature was 20 degrees today and our winter will last until the middle of April so my transition clothes as well as seasonal have a long season! So looking forward to cleaning my closet for the Spring and Summer 😊
During my corporate career years (which, sadly, ended in early retirement because of an injury), ten different outfits, repeating most separates in different combinations, was considered an adequate or good work wardrobe. Each outfit only had to be repeated once a month, that was fine. Many women had even fewer outfits, especially when starting their careers. Nowadays, we have enormous wardrobes and I am among the worst offenders! The “problem”, if there is one, is that I love and wear every item, they all fit well (now) and are high-quality natural fabrics/materials. Yes, my storage space is tight and it’s hard to find things, but there’s nothing I currently want to part with, I edit constantly, most are very recent purchases. I had to nearly buy a whole new wardrobe last year because of almost a decade of weight loss, so nothing is particularly dated, except maybe for some of my footwear, but that’s ok, if they’re high quality, classic and comfy. I probably over-purchased, but I love having the variety and selection that I never could afford before. I also still wear many of my older, bigger items, some coats are ok, and all footwear and accessories, which I love. Plus, getting dresses is so much more fun now that I’m a size 6/8 again!
Don't feel like you are doing something wrong by having a large and loved wardrobe that you actually wear. No one should tell you to give up loved items of clothing just to get down to a certain number. Everyone is different.
I agree w @rocketmom. I have quite a lot of clothes for a couple of reasons: my size has changed minimally since my early 20s, and I try to buy good quality classics or clothes that are unique, so never in or out. My closet is pretty small so I don’t have a ton of clothes but they all fit and I wear them all. There’s one particular skirt that I’ve had for probably 35 years!! I still love it.
My problem isn't to curate what I have but rather to wear what I've decided on, instead of the same default around the house stuff. I'm an extreme introvert, homeschooler, so I don't get out of the house more than two or three times a week. I can't get over the mental block of saving my better clothes for leaving the house. I also don't wear shoes indoors (cultural upbringing), so I don't feel totally put together, which means I'm comfortable in my slippers or bare feet. I will not compromise comfort, especially in my own home. Is there a work around for this?
Great video that I totally get. I also want to say I appreciate listening to you channel. Thank you so much that we can listen to you and not worry about hearing obscene language. I have had to unsubscribe to many youtubers because of their foul language. A lot of them have been women who unfortunately would have good content. Not classy at all!
Are all the workout clothes t-shirts, and nightwear extras? I also have a gardening category. In summer I usually put on gardening clothes that get worn and dirty, then shower and put on something lovely...two different aspects in my life. It seems you cycle shoes and bags in and out with seasons too?
Hi Jennifer, since reading madame chic and watching your videos I thoroughly enjoy switching my clothes from season to season. It gets easier to purge and be honest with oneself to make the decision whether to keep or let go. Thank you for the Blumene offer… wow I’ve been looking at and wanting to invest in this type of facial tightening device for a while now …. Looking forward to receiving it ❤
Hi Jennifer! Well, dear, you knocked this one out of the park!! I literally just time-blocked (I hope that's a word...phrase??? haha!) two afternoons this month to get into my closet and get serious!! You just made me so excited to start thinking about my spring wardrobe choices!! Sending you so much grateful affection for all your hard work! Can't wait to see you tomorrow!! With love, Kellie
Hello. Thank you as always for putting out amazing content. I know in the past you did a video on purses. Can you do one again for functionality of everyday versus going out and dinner parties etc?
It at the same time the smaller wardrobe makes that easier because you’ll just have load or two by the end of the week that you have to do rather than hours of laundry at the end of the month.
Hi Jennifer! Thank you for your suggestions!, my "problem" is that i have plenty of clothes but i like every piece😊! I stopped buying more for the last few years. I would really like to know how to properly store the items out of season. I hope you gives us advice on this subject. Merci encore, et bonne journée!
Hi Jennifer, I have a problem with hanging gowns and long skirts they always have gold lines when it’s time to wear - any suggestions? Thank you for reminding me of the ten items wardrobe I read your book as well 🥰
Please help me with my wardrobe what can I do to get a 10 item wardrobe and add classy essentials. I just don’t know what my style is anymore. What I do know is I love jeans and trousers with a nice jacket. I have the vision but never find what I actually like.
??what if your lifestyle is so simple (walking the dog, retired, super casual) that sports pants and t-shirts is all your wardrobe requires? How do you get pleasure out of your wardrobe when this is your daily life, as good as that life is?
If it’s an option for you, you could buy somewhat dressier clothes that are still comfortable. Just because that’s all you require, it doesn’t mean you’re not allowed anything else! 😉
When you look in the mirror do you say, that will work? If so elevate to what you see to "looking good" to you. Last week I put three items I've had for awhile, put them on together and loved it! That is where the pleasure is.
I work in increments so that I don't get overwhelmed. Every season I have a big garbage bag to be donated to a local charity. Books I give to my book worm friend. Of course, undies get thrown out.
Thrifting. Search out 5 places on your routine outings be it a thrift shop, flea market, etc. in a more affluent area. Whenever you are in the area of one, stop in. It really doesn't take long. Before you know it you will have 2or3 you know will most likely have what you want.
I understand wanting to try different styles of video now you gave a professional editor but I really didn’t enjoy the purchased B roll. It made the video feel quite mass produced and like any one of hundreds of other style TH-camrs. It really didn’t really feel like a Jennifer L Scott / Daily Connoisseur video.
9:31 how interesting, I find that interior designers also have the best style as well 🤍 it must be the principles they follow in interiors that they apply to themselves!

I'm glad you were ok!
Such an.inspiring story. Glad you were alright, and had family to go to.
@@jenniferkessener1111 - just for several days. From there I got up to Wisconsin and convinced the Milwaukee Ballet to hire me on the spot.

What about having shoes that you only wear indoors? They would stay clean.
Looking forward to receiving it ❤
Wonderful!
Thank you, Kellie!
Always appreciate your wardrobe videos! Thank you. 💕
Perfect video for this time of year . A total refresh to welcome the Spring.
Thank you Jennifer 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Good advice. I have done a lot of your suggestions, but needed to be reminded of them. Thanks
Always love your wardrobe videos the best of all! Thank you!
I always love your wardrobe videos. I need to give my closet some attention again.
Hello. Thank you as always for putting out amazing content. I know in the past you did a video on purses. Can you do one again for functionality of everyday versus going out and dinner parties etc?
Great motivation for an early Spring project. Thank you Jennifer.
Video suggestion: I have hangers of fashion scarves. Dear Jenn, if you luv scarves as I do, how about doing a video on how you style yours. Txs.
Love this! Where is your beautiful white sweater from in 0:50?
Loved this video - packed with guidance. Thank you x
Ty a great idea,i love your hair
Hi, Jennifer! Thanks for sharing the tips in this video. Would you mind sharing what size you took in the cream Lily Silk ribbed wool sweater?
Thank you for sharing this video. It was very helpful.
Great video!❤
One thing that has to be highlighted. If you have a smaller wardrobe you have to stay on top of laundry!
Great video, thank you
It at the same time the smaller wardrobe makes that easier because you’ll just have load or two by the end of the week that you have to do rather than hours of laundry at the end of the month.
@@fundamonium yea but if laundry is an issue for you, then this is not beneficial.
She linked the storage cubes as she used. I believe she stores these in her closet. I've seen similar cubes in Aldi and the dollar tree
Thank you!
I so need to see this, thank you ❤
Hi Jennifer, I have a problem with hanging gowns and long skirts they always have gold lines when it’s time to wear - any suggestions?
Thank you for reminding me of the ten items wardrobe I read your book as well 🥰
I have to work on my wardrobe. I have nice clothing and home, garden one which are to small and uncomfortable.
Great video! Can you tell me where you got the belt you are wearing at 7:30 please?
Yes! It's from Thursday Boots!
Good stuff
Love the plaid trench coat, can you please tell us where you got it?
Yes! It's BCBG but about 15 years old...
Please help me with my wardrobe what can I do to get a 10 item wardrobe and add classy essentials. I just don’t know what my style is anymore. What I do know is I love jeans and trousers with a nice jacket. I have the vision but never find what I actually like.

Hello Jennifer I am house hunting any suggestions for what I should look for in a house?
Look for potential. And a nice garden/ views to the garden are critical. I think it's about the space and visualizing what you can do with it...
Thank you
The running tip is to buy the house you can afford in the best neighborhood
Do you have 10 items per season?
What's everyone's thoughts on having a luggage rack for current seasons?
Jennifer- are you wearing the Merit signature lip in “Baby”? 🌷
I work in increments so that I don't get overwhelmed. Every season I have a big garbage bag to be donated to a local charity. Books I give to my book worm friend. Of course, undies get thrown out.
❤
👍👍👍👍👍👍
🥰
Most people can’t afford the more expensive items you get for free. How are we to live on ten items a season they will wear out so fast.
Thrifting. Search out 5 places on your routine outings be it a thrift shop, flea market, etc. in a more affluent area. Whenever you are in the area of one, stop in. It really doesn't take long. Before you know it you will have 2or3 you know will most likely have what you want.
Oh, MerSea annual warehouse sale will be in a few months. It's a true sale, great deals!
Maybes are no
I understand wanting to try different styles of video now you gave a professional editor but I really didn’t enjoy the purchased B roll. It made the video feel quite mass produced and like any one of hundreds of other style TH-camrs. It really didn’t really feel like a Jennifer L Scott / Daily Connoisseur video.
Is that curly haired lass one of your darling daughters?
No
9:31 how interesting, I find that interior designers also have the best style as well 🤍 it must be the principles they follow in interiors that they apply to themselves!
They understand color, proportion and quality.
This is very helpful, thank you.
