      80 kwh battery pack so that you have the option to go just electric and then hydrogen fuel cell range extender with regenerative bracking fed back to the battery pack . Only down side I think would be the wheel base would have to be long to fit everything .

    The 2 cars for me are the Mazda and the Toyota (MR2?), although that Subaru looked interesting. The GTR with a Honda Civic front end is not for me, but each to their own, I appreciate the uniqueness of it. One reason we're having so many EVs now is the quota enforced on manufacturers by governments, if they don't make a certain % they get huge fines. Anyway, great to see Mazda at it again!

    the prelude reminds me alot of the 92-95 I'm all for it , it looks like it's ready to go I wish it was petrol or petrol/hybrid assist but we all know where we are and what the future holds. could that prelude possibly assist a 2dr integra 🤷‍♂️. the rx7/8 is great move I'm happy to see fun cars and not just suvs.

  • @maiy8786
    @maiy8786 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I doubt pure EV sports cars will sell well (granted they even reach production).
    Seeing how short batteries last while driving spiritedly (let alone going proper fast) and the time it takes to fully charge them I don't see many enthusiasts wanting to put up with these issues. Plus you have the lack of exhaust note which (to me at least) makes up for at least half the driving pleasure. Driving EVs is like watching a movie with no audio.
    Hybrids on the other hand I can picture selling well. You can use the EV motor for putting around town, going from A to B and when you want some fun you have the ICE engine.
    Looking forward to what Mazda is going to do with that RX concept.

    • @niallk9336
      @niallk9336 ปีที่แล้ว

      Performance hybrids are amazing. Imagine a turbocharged V6, but with no lag. Instant and massive torque from a dead stop and at every RPM. Plus the gas engine for the higher speeds.
      The formula for performance hybrids is usually big hp engines paired to big torque emotors. They compliment each other amazingly well. And you only need ~2kWh of battery to do your thing. You recover tons of battery in braking zones, and there's always some overhead from engine going to the batteries (comparable to the draw of a supercharger).
      The batteries on a hybrid can also be set with huge buffers near 0 and 100. Such that the battery is always between true 25-75% -- this will extend the lithium ion longevity by 100x.
      Compared to 100kWh EVs that only can go a couple hundred miles... and will be shot after 10 years due to all the charge cycles and need to use the entire range of the battery (true 0-100%), which will kill the battery health.

  • @justinly974
    @justinly974 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Very excited for the Prelude, and I'm glad it will be offered as a hybrid and not only as a pure ICE or BEV (those would be welcome, too). The market needs more not-boring hybrids. I hope Honda focuses on using the hybrid powertrain to improve performance and not just efficiency.

    The hybrid rotary probably works like the 1st gen insight
    The electric motor output shaft will be bolted to the eccentric shaft on the 4 rotor (it is rumored to be a small dispalcement high revving 4 rotor hybrid)
    The electric motor will take care of torque until you get to the ~6k rpm that a rotary likes and that torque and power will take over. This is how it works in the 1st gen insight, the electrical system maximizes the efficiency of the ICE

    I pick - of course becuase of my love for RX series - new Mazda ICONIC Sp (hopefully called RX-9 in production stage). Petrol, rotary engine with EV system is for me - far most resonable combination. Also for big plus - 16C engine is capable to burn not only normal petrol but also synthetic. And synthetic petrol, in my opinion, is real future for cars. EVs will be option - still good, but only a option in powertrains catalouge

Like it has the niche touches of the modern era designs with slit headlights, sharp edges leading to the rear, front end of the cars looking like Goofy's shoe (if they arent going for a hyper car design), yet it has this suble 2000'ish front bumper design that lets you know this vehicle has been here for a long time. Loved the “Buy N Large”, Wally reference. Not sure we have to go ev but that’s what the current “we are being sold” trend is I suppose. I like ev since watching a 510 at PIR late on Fridays, rockin a fork lift motor and batteries via a hand throttle busting v8 and 4 cyl turbos alike. They got plenty of soul, we just don’t have plenty of infrastructure. I mean it’s taken 100 years to develop our current situation and they think in 10 we will have it dialed like it is now? Ha. Doesn’t take away from the new tech from over 100 years ago finally having the right amount of current processes to make it more efficient. Not sold on an all out ban of ice, I would like more hybrids that are good but we’ll see.

    • @niallk9336
      @niallk9336 ปีที่แล้ว

      Infrastructure isn't the real issue. It's the battery technology. Lithium Ion was a huge leap forward from the NiMH in Prius, but at the end of the day it's still only a viable solution for a hybrid. The materials needed. The amount of batteries you need to stack. The long-term longevity of those batteries. It all adds up to a massive L for most pure electric applications.
      If your commute is within 20 miles, OK. If you're using it on a 10k motorcycle, OK.
      Otherwise, the resource limits combined with increased manufacturing cost and the fact that every one of these cars will be garbage in 10 years is a huge L for the consumer.
      They will need to field a different energy storage solution besides Lithium for me to ever buy one of these cars.
      100kWh SUVs and Sports Cars do literally nothing for the environment either.

    Some of these EVs are gorgeous and they are going to be speed machines but I think the real answer is fuel agnostic hybrids. Less battery required, better range, every positive of the electric drivetrain is maintained and you can have your engine/generator run at it's peak efficiency always (minimum emissions no matter what fuel is used).

    I'm not particularly attached to ICE cars. For me, it has to do with driving dynamics and passion. Look at hybrids. They used to be boring, but now we have cars like the 918, AMG One, and Valkyrie.
    EVs aren't quite there yet for me. There are some interesting cars like the Rimac Nevera, but they are far from affordable. I'm hopeful that Japan can bring EV driving passion to the everyday man. I imagine weight and packaging will be the biggest challenges.

      So long as they're using Lithium, EVs will never be there. And I'm an early adopter on the Hybrid train... but I'll be sticking to Hybrids for the forseeable future. EVs are not viable. Can you imagine buying a mid 1990s GT-R -- still worth 40k 25+ years later. You buy that GT-R, and it will be in a trash yard 10 years from now. Doesn't matter if it only has 30,000 miles, garage kept, etc. -- those batteries aren't lasting and cost too much.

    I work on EVs, including Tesla, and people shouldn't dismiss them just like that. EVs are evolving fast, it's nothing like 10 years ago. Performance Tesla models are wild and much fun at Touge. I'm even looking forward getting a beaten up Model S Plaid to repair and make my Touge fun car.
    PS. Increase in EV sales has nothing to do with quotas. I don't know anyone that bought an EV to say they prefer going back to ICE car. You have to try to understand.
    When I move to Japan, I'll probably get an EV for daily driving. Might even do a Tesla motor JDM car conversion, that could be much fun.

    Mazda has been dropping amazing looking 2-door RX concept cars for the better part of a decade now with nothing to show for it. Unless I finally see one in production within the next 18 months, I'm going to assume that Mazda has zero funding for this type of car and these are all design exercises, nothing more.

    I don't like the politically driven push to position battery electric vehicles as the only adequate solution for future mobility. I feel we need to develop and offer multiple solutions, in order to meet an ample range of consumer needs.
    But I'm not against electric power itself. In fact, I'm looking forward for manufacturers to further develop and improve the technology, and show that fun and excitement with EVs is possible.
    It's not a doomsday scenario like some make it seem to be.

      It is no more justifiable making a fire to get from a to b. Car manufacturers had 150 years to develop alternitives. Now we have access to the technology to get rid of ice step by step. Maybe the next step is going in the air... who knows... Technology moves on. Its the nature of humans to struggle with changes.

      I agree. EVs aren't even a real solution, they just sweep the pollution problem under the rug. Most electricity is still coal or fuel generated and lets not get started talking about the pollution and contamination that is created in already impoverished countries when their resources are stripped to make the batteries. This is just a rehash of manufacturing jobs being outsourced to overseas countries that happened 30-40 years ago, except now the pollution is getting outsourced and naive people are thinking they are saving the planet.
      A real green future would be nuclear power plants that provides electricity for hybrid vehicles that could also run off biofuels.

    You're right we shouldn't criticize the ev thing BUT I really with the focus was hybrid. All electric isn't a good thing, we'd be slaves to the grid

    That Mazda concept is just beautiful ....this is the first time I ever even consider to get one if it really goes into production; The new Prelude is just meh...the 90s soul has lost....somehow, Honda/Acura designs has always been polarizing ....They should learn from Mazda...stick with heritage...

    There are some cool designs but too many wrong engines, hope tuners would fix this.
    Another thing would be prices, I expect to be stupidly high, high in a way that they will sell 1/10 of what they expect.
    Manufacturers are digging grave with they're own hands.

    Hybrid could be more interesting.
    I have hopes for hydrogen.

    The Mazda concept is sharp.
    I don't like the EV platform, but I appreciate the styling.
    The Toyota concept is impressive, but I suspect it will not see production.
    The GT-R/Hyper force concept.... absolutely atrocious. Terrible design.
