FIRST LOOK: Rotary-Engine Mazda Previews Next RX-7

  • It’s called the Mazda Iconic SP, a compact, classically proportioned sportscar built to simply embody “the joy of driving”.
The fundamentals are fairly straightforward. There’s a rotary engine featuring twin rotors, though here - as in the MX-30 R-EV - it’s used merely to charge the battery which in turn powers the electric motors.
As ever with most things with batteries and motors, it’ll be pretty powerful, but slightly heavier than you expect; Power is quoted at 365bhp, weight at 1,450kg. So it’ll be fast but not silly.
So, is the Iconic SP more son-of-RX-7? Top Gear Magazine's Tom Ford takes a closer look.

@@biggiebagel Still a rotary engine. Just spending most of it's time as a generator. But, yes. The action of the motor is the same. So, it is still a rotary.
Just like a diesel motor outside of a hospital is still a diesel motor, even though it's serving as the cranking force for a backup generator.

Literally this. There's a lot of cookie-cutter-sports car designs out there today and very very few are actually "cool car" designs. I've seen countless kids (and adults) turn heads for an Mx5 RF just sitting in a parking lot. There's something about that design language that elicits an untainted response.

He said something that resonated with me: "you know you've bought the right car when, after you park it and walk away you stop and look back at it with a smile". It's a work of art. No over the top hypercar design. No over stylized motorsports themed bits. Just pure, sleek and simple.
I first laid eyes on it at the Tokyo Mobility Show (auto show) last October and was stunned. Easily the car I spent the most time staring at during that show. Interesting to note how Nakayama-san mentioned how it looks from above as not only did Mazda have the car on a rotating platform to view it at ground level, they also had a large raised platform off to the side so we can also view it from above.
My goodness that car is stunning.

MX-5 NC owner here. I do not thing this is a RX-7 or mx-5 Kind of car, i do believe this is Mazda designers becoming artists. Just like Italian car designers were artists back in the 60s and 70s. It looks more like modern interpretation of a classic Alfa Romeo/Ferrari or even Lancia silhouette than anything else to me. To achieve this you have to come back to the simple basic shapes and proportions. In a day in which every design is as complicated as possible (no wonder modern cars are becoming less and less appealing), having the courage to go back to the basics takes courage. I think they did exactly this with the MX-5 ND, making it smaller, and lighter, exactly the opposite of what the industry is doing today. I salute to the designers, I haven't seen a car so beautiful and appealing in ages. Surprisingly, it comes from Japan, but it had to be Mazda. Hats off.

Seriously, today you can have it scanned or 3D scan it yourself or find pre-made 3D scans and take it to a 5-axis shop and have them make the body/chassis for you.
Then slap in a V8 or rotary or whatever crate engine and the usual 3rd party components (suspensions, Willwood brake kits, MSD box, entertainment suite if want etc)
You can remake anything for around $50-60k especially if you can do some of the timeconsuing but easy labor yourself.

I've driven various miatas (including my own NB) and have heard great things about the driving dynamics and quality of each of their models, from their smallest hatchbacks to their largest SUVs. It truly feels like they care about putting out a well made, elegant product that's enjoyable to drive, no matter the form factor. It'd be nice if they walked this back to a more traditional hybrid with a proper rotary drivetrain and electric assist, but that's mostly just wishful thinking. FYI. 1450 Kg = 3,196.7 Lbs. Or did you add your weight 203.3Lbs + 3196.7 = 3400.0 Lb? Porsche Efuel is a long way from prime time, very expensive to make right now. That's why they use it only as racing fuel.

Mazda NEEDS to know their design has a market. This thing is gorgeous. And it might not be a classical rotary engine in the brap-brappy way we all hoped, but it's a rotary without doubt and that means its true to both its branch and unique mechanical heritage. Add to that a crisp and modern design and all it needs to be a hit like the MX-5 and the former RX-7, is an affordable price point. I'd be happy to see these on the road and track, but it shouldn't just be a car for executives or collectors. Real drivers need to drive this.

  • @riskin620

It obviously looks fantastic, as does the interior. Two things I don't love so much: the additional weight of a rotary generator (if you're making an EV, just make an EV, otherwise make a hybrid), and the pop up headlights (they look great, but moving parts add cost and decrease reliability). Give it excellent, usable performance at around $50k USD and you have a winner.

This car combines things people like about the different generations of MX-5. The popup headlight from the NA, the seductive curves of the NB, the stunning front of the ND. Add the barely contained, dynamically strained shape of RX-7, that makes you think of a big cat ready to jump at any moment... You get this car. It is awesome, and shows real heritage to the greatest Mazdas of the past.

In the 60s, Mazda had the balls to pick up the rotary design and make it work when no one else wanted to risk it. They gave us the FD RX-7. Hearing that this is directly inspired by the RX-7, and will do what it can to carry on its spirit, how can we not want it?
And the rotary-electric combo powertrain actually sounds interesting. Rotary engines, for how incredible they are, also have limitations. Perhaps utilizing it to power an electric motor is the exact next stage evolution it needs. Hope this car actually becomes a reality.

The rear end in general doesn't look great. I like the rest of the design though. I owned an RX-8 for 8 years and would like to see them make another sports car, although I'm not convinced there's any place for a rotary engine anymore.

    • @notdaijoubu5062
      @notdaijoubu5062 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@DavidScotton I have skepticism for the "rotary" part too. Mazda have been shoehorning it over half a century. Not to say they can't be made "reliable" but the upkeep and fuel efficiency for rotaries are too uncompetitive versus a more traditional engine design. I have no doubt that if they do make another sports car aside from the MX-5, it will definitely be soulful and very characteristic of Mazda regardless of powertrain.

It is the Evolution of the RX lineage. The Iconic SP is beautiful enough to make non-car people happy. It is a electric hybrid will will make the greenies happy (I'm one too). And it is a beautiful rear drive two seats sports car which will make the car nuts and gear heads happy (I'm both of these too!).
I'm eyeing a one of the BRZ/GT86 siblings or a Miata RF. If Mazda brings the Iconic SP to production as new RX then I will be very upset with myself if I don't buy one. It will go in the garage next to my 1987 FC Turbo II and my 2009 2-door GTI.

I'm not, however, loving those wheels... they don't make any sense with what are such beautifully clean lines. The tilt up dynamics of the doors are also a source of doubt. Love the simplicity of the interior... but corduroy? That's not going to age well at all...
Full disclosure, I own a 93 FD-3 that I have a completely unreasonable emotional attachment to. Even though it's been by far the most expensive car to own for me, I can't imagine ever selling it. It's just SO much fun to drive... and gets admiring looks whenever I take it out.
