Five steps to becoming an advocate | Joseph R Campbell | TEDxAdelaide

  • As a lifelong world wanderer, Joseph Campbell has a particular perspective on advocacy and self-determination. When your race is a barrier at home and an advantage abroad, why would you not choose to migrate somewhere else? But once you do, must you speak on behalf of those disenfranchised in your home country or adopted homeland?
Joseph Campbell migrated from the United States to Adelaide, a simple process that involved a bit of paperwork. The reality turned out to be a bit more complicated. Ten years as an expat from Chile to Malawi to Adelaide has him now wondering about our place in the world as advocates. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I am proud. Thanks for sharing. I know my kid is an advocacy and his is 7. I have to get behind him as a mother. What a get kid I have...one who cares deeply about homeless people, animals and how clean the planet could be if we did over part. I've wanted him to volunteer, but he is too young. They should change that. So I will buy tools off Amazon and we can go and clean up some of the neighborhoods and around his school.

A right from upclose can be perceived as a privilege from afar. These words made me agree more than anything rn

There are so many causes in need of support and advocacy, that it can become overwhelming. For me, my biggest passion is animal rights. I have found my purpose in life, is to have a positive influence in the lives of as many suffering animals as possible, beginning with becoming vegan. I hope everyone finds their cause and works hard to make a positive change in the world.

Im selfish not selfless. Im a warrior for myself. Im Independent. Dont know why ppl find that strange. When everyone is in peril, then want myself to be a stepping stone for others that put myself in a worst position and risky. No gurantee that those same ppl will help myself out and most likely further my peril with lies.
crabs in a bucket I would never advocate for.

@@supaswagg251 Right on - I dont think I expressed the tongue-in-cheek tone enough. I volunteered in Malawi for two years and the biggest lesson I learned was that that experience was for ME...not the people in Malawi. We value our impact in unknown places too much and too little...it's a living paradox. That's why i started the talk off with "do we have an obligation to advocate..." No answers...

@@NRSAonline Greed and selfishness are destryoing the US. Thats why we have reached this point. Its all ME ME ME instead of community and helping each other. Until this changes the US will continue its slide further and further down. Also its nice ppl put BLM on their instagram or other "gestures" for a slew of causes. But until the policies change that are at the root of injustice nothing will change. Every day Im more convinced we are not up for that in the US. It's too much work for our ME FIRST "society".

I fight with that same thought. Thank you for your honesty. I always say you must love yourself before you can love others. However, love unconditionally. Bless you!

And when I advocate for myself why is it attribute to plagiarists and not myself while others attempt to project false narratives thinking Im going to advocate for when its not myself. Then heap more things on myself in attempts to silence myself while amp'n everyone else.

Exactly. The real start of this was a conversation I was having with a friend in the States. I feel relaxed in Australia, away from American racial tension. But then there's Aboriginal people in Australia that are going through similar tensions. So, yeah, it's not my fight, but Im aware. Apart from that, I gotta live, love and hope I get done what I need to do!
