2024 Toyota HiLux review: GR Sport | Tough new 4WD dual-cab ute / pick-up targets Ford Ranger Raptor

  • The 2024 Toyota HiLux GR Sport is here and ready to shake up the dual-cab ute segment in Australia, which is currently led by the second-generation Ford Ranger Raptor, with the Nissan Navara Pro-4X Warrior and Mitsubishi Triton Xtreme also in the flagship mix.
    Much like its rivals, the new HiLux GR Sport levels the dual-cab ute up with a series of upgrades. For starters, just look at it! If appearance counts for anything, it's the toughest HiLux to date. But there's more to it than just looks, as it also ushers in a more powerful version of the tried-and-true 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine.
    In this expert review, CarsGuide Senior Journalist Tom White puts the HiLux GR Sport through its paces to find out just how capable its mechanical changes have made it. After all, it also takes an already successful 4WD formula and adds to it a series of helpful 4x4 features, so it should be good.

    raptors are great when theyre running but they are riddled with quality issues and just too risky proposition, this on the other hand whilst not as wild as the raprtor is fine more subdued cheaper and bulletproof like most toyota products

  • @DW-10
    @DW-10 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    It's a real shame that they didn't take the opportunity to incorporate stuff like wider body panels (not oversized flares), the AWD transfer case from the Prado to give more capability and further differentiate it in the Hilux range.
    Given they are obviously keeping the 2.8 in the next gen Prado, it is strange they haven't further developed it from a power/litre perspective. If they made as much torque per litre as the biturbo Ranger it would make 700Nm. 550Nm brings it in line with the 2.3 Nav and new 2.4 Triton. Only Mazda/Isuzu have a lower specific output. Not saying it needs 700Nm, but 550 is hardly ground breaking.
    On the subject of "digital" tech, I'd take analogue gauges over a digital display and actual buttons over a large central screen. It's a vehicle, not an ipad.

      And it had a decent payload too so it could actually be used … plus, its suspension didn’t have dodgy spacer plates.

    Judging by the huge line of Ford Rangers outside of OZ dealerships all with warranty issues, Toyota have nothing to worry about.

    Ranger Raptor is praised too much here because of the 3 liter V6 gas engine but Aussies never wondered what it's like if it had the 2 liter biturbo diesel instead which other markets get. Compared to that, this would definitely make more sense.

    ehh, I dunno, I'd much prefer the Ford raptor, not only for comfort, but for technological features as well, in the infotainment system. alot of buttons as well that have it's own purpose. Hilux is the best for old peeps who likes more rugged feel and stiff steering.

    • @rubytuesday1345
      @rubytuesday1345 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      As the guy says, if you want to make a lot of noise and have a more refined drive then go for the Ranger. If you want a proper ute that can go off road, tow a boat all day and be reliable, well you’d better get a Hilux. Simple.

    300 Kgs less payload, what is the GR supposed to be … it’s not like it’s a more practical or useful Raptor or a direct competitor.
    You cannot use this vehicle as a base for a touring set up or a tradie as you are already 300 kgs out of pocket. And all the journalists say it needs weight in it to settle the ride, so something is wrong with the setup.
    Toyota missed a big opportunity to build a Wildtrak X but with the GR engine and slightly more power and torque to smash it out of the park.

    For a mid size or smaller pick up “truck” that’s right bogans its not a Ute , at best it’s a light commercial vehicle which sits within a range of vehicles based on weight, Toyota hilux sport is essentially a sows ear pretending to be a silk purse. Attempting to sell it as bigger, what by a few centimetres is a con for a start, it’s still the same old SR5 with a few aesthetic changes, being flogged at a higher price. Toyota could at least mirror the Tacoma and sell that as the upgrade. Frankly car reviewers should call it out, not continue to flog what we don’t want. Keep your Thailand Tonkas in Asia thanks.

    The thing that bugs me about all the different youtubers reviewing this car is they dont compare it to the Ranger that is at the same price point. Always comparing it to a Raptor. Raptor is way more expensive..like 25k. That Ford 10 speed auto is junk anyway and its in alot of Rangers. Who wants a huge ipad on the dash...too much distraction.
