I heard at a music festival, maybe Woodstock, a singer just got on stage and started singing. He literally had to go through video footage of his performance to piece together his song.
I watched a doc about Woodstock that said Arlo Guthrie pretty much made up the song "Alice's Restaurant" on the stage because the next acts were caught up in traffic and were late.
Songs that took LONGEST to write 1 tonya harding - sufjan stevens 26 years 2 bohemian rhapsody- 6 years 3 hallelujah - leonard cohen- 5 years 5 heart of the matter - don henley - 42 years 5 welcome to the black parade - my chemical romance- 6 years 6 josephine - chris cornell - 12 years
I remember in a interview with Mike Chapman that he witnessed Debbie Harry and Chris Stein wrote Rapture in 15 mins. and Debbie did the rap part in one take recording.
Missing is Dreams by Stevie Nicks. _"I sat down on the bed with my keyboard in front of me. I found a drum pattern, switched my little cassette player on and wrote 'Dreams' in about 10 minutes."_
What about the original theme from MASH? Most people know the instrumental version from the TV series, but for the pilot movie, it was an actual song called *"Suicide Is Painless"* . Apparently the needed a song for a scene in the movie and the director tried to write one. He couldn't, so asked his 15yr old son to try it. He wrote it in just 5 minutes and they ended up using it as the main theme.
2 songs I would add to this list are Rock N Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution by AC/DC from their album BACK IN BLACK Pour Some Sugar On Me by DEF LEPPARD from their album HYSTERIA. In both cases they were in the studio and the band went for lunch and someone stayed back and the song was written in minutes and when the rest of the band came back the song was recorded for the album.
It's easy to believe Single Ladies was written in a short span of time. It's simplistic and repetitive with a pretty basic A-B song structure. Supposedly "Ghosbusters" by Ray Parker Jr. and "If You Leave" by OMD were also written in a matter hours.
It's easy to write a song if you take an existing song (I want a new drug) and just change the lyrics, as with Ray Parker Jr. and Ghostbusters. He got rightfully sued and lost.
As overplayed as it is, Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden is still a masterpiece all these years later and Superunknown is still one of the greatest albums of all time.
The problem with this list is it's all based on rumors. An artist will claim that they wrote a song in 10 minutes and nobody can prove otherwise so we just go with it. It's not like artists are adverse to lying to sharpen their image
I Will Follow you into the Dark by Death Cab For Cutie was written in 15 minutes by Ben Gibbard. He had an office for writing songs out side of his house. After he wrote their biggest hit he went home.
Producing team Stock, Aitken and Waterman had forgotten that Kylie Minogue was arriving to record with them. As a result, they wrote I Should Be So Lucky in forty minutes while she waited outside the recording studio.
from what i understand, Billy Joel's We Didnt Start The Fire.. was written on napkins in 5-10 mins.. but tossing together famous people and events over the 50'ish years covered in the song isnt all that hard.. at least for a HoF quality songwriter like Mr. Joel
He said in an interview that I watched that he was in a diner talking to a younger guy that said "You're lucky, nothing happened in your generation". His reply was naming things that happened and it became the song. He stated in the interview that he is a history buff and at one time thought about becoming a history teacher.
9:26 wait, he may have known just a few chords to make on the guitar, but he did knew a LOT of musical theory and did know a LOT of chords on the piano. Have you ever tried to learn to play bohemian rhapsody? (Including the opera part and the ending)
You goobers forgot about Warrant's "Cherry Pie". Janie Lane has said an interview. He wrote the song in 15 minutes on the back of a pizza box because the record label president said they didn't hear a rock anthem like loving an elevator. As far as Lane was concerned the album was done and "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was the single, and name of the record. He said after the president of the label lived with cherry pie over the weekend that was the new single and they changed the name of the album and at the time he hated writing that song.
Black Hole Sun or black hole is defect some early digital camera could experience, where something too light could be rendered as black. For example, early firmware of BMPCC suffered from this defect. No clue if this is the true origin of the term, but isn’t impossible that a reporter would have explained a black sun camera artifact in a live report in similar wording. That said, I’m not sure if any news / ENG cameras had this issue, but maybe?
im kinda surprised that rap god by eminem isnt on here... because he has gone on record multiple times to say that the song was penned in less time then the run time of the song period and that the 2nd verse was pretty much freestyled and that song is in the guiness book of world records and also went to #1 the year it was released... so yeah... seemed like a pretty good candidate for this list...
Ummm I can think of many songs written in seconds. For example daft punk "around the world". All of these songs clearly took longer based on the amount of words needing to be written. This entire list SHOULD be songs that repeat one line constantly. Some songs only have 1 word.
Before watching this video, I already knew the situation Beck was in when he wrote the lyrics, nonsensical as they might be, to “Loser,” an uncut 1990s gem.

Stopped less than three minutes in because "funnily enough" is just grating and poor presentation. Colour me petty, but I will die on that particular hill. 🤨

It's my understanding Jerry Reed come up with "East bound and down" pretty much right on the spot when he was asked to write a song for the movie Smokey and The Bandit

10:07 Was written in a single office bathroom visit, but mixed pretty heavily after work in the garage.

Yeah, not exactly a masterpiece that scholars will be struggling to interpret in 100 years.
It's easy to write a song if you take an existing song (I want a new drug) and just change the lyrics, as with Ray Parker Jr. and Ghostbusters. He got rightfully sued and lost.
What about Dolly Parton where she wrote Jolene and I will always love you in the same night
As overplayed as it is, Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden is still a masterpiece all these years later and Superunknown is still one of the greatest albums of all time.
You forgot "Cherry Pie" by Warrant, and "Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin. Both written in about 5 min.
"Free Fallin" was Tom's first SOLO album
The BeeGees had a habit of writing songs in like 15 minute increments. Just prolific….and bloody brilliant.
Sia has written so many songs in a small amount of time. She wrote Rihannas Diamonds in 14 minutes!
The problem with this list is it's all based on rumors. An artist will claim that they wrote a song in 10 minutes and nobody can prove otherwise so we just go with it. It's not like artists are adverse to lying to sharpen their image
Wow! Incredibly talented people. It took me weeks to write a paper I couldn’t imagine writing a song in mere minutes!
I Will Follow you into the Dark by Death Cab For Cutie was written in 15 minutes by Ben Gibbard. He had an office for writing songs out side of his house. After he wrote their biggest hit he went home.
This reminds me of "Ladybird", where the title character tells her dad that Alanis Morrisette wrote "One Hand in my Pocket" in ten minutes.
Producing team Stock, Aitken and Waterman had forgotten that Kylie Minogue was arriving to record with them. As a result, they wrote I Should Be So Lucky in forty minutes while she waited outside the recording studio.
You guys knew exactly what you were doing with that thumbnail
John Lennon and Paul McCartney met The Rolling Stones manager and quickly wrote I Wanna Be Your Man and gave it to him for the Stones to record.
Tjere's also Paul M the song yesterday that was written in 15 minutes no?

You could have included Stone Temple Pilots-Plush I remenber reading it only took them like 2ish hours to make it.
"Bond on a boat. Bond on a bike. Skyfall. Skyfall." (Śean Lock)
Beastie boys! Bob seger! Yes! Also John Denver Annie’s song - amazing to write that so fast

A couple of Colplay songs were 'sent' to Chris Martin rather quickly, for example 'Yellow'
Outside by Staind was basically written on stage live, in the moment, by Aaron Lewis...this is no. 1
You should explore the creation of 30 Days in the hole by Humble Pie

What about Extreme's More Than Words? It was written in about 30 minutes.
According to rumor, Bob Dylan wrote "Blowing in the Wind" in 10 minutes

Lennon and McCartney wrote eight days a week in 20 minutes! The Beatles are amazing!
'"Before I go" by Graham Nash. "American Woman" by the Guess Who should have been #1.
Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote That Would Be Enough from Hamilton in 45 minutes (one of the quickest songs he's written)
Not only did you omit multiple Beatles songs, you forgot probably the best one. Hey Bulldog.
Sherry by The 4 Seasons was repotedly written in 15 minutes
Wildflowers came easy to Petty because it was about his recently deceased mom.
I'm surprised you don't have "Smells like teen spirit" here
Someone really likes the word "funnily".
I have to assume My Humps is going to be #1
I’m sure it was easy for lady Gaga to write essentially a song that Madonna wrote decades previously.
Yoou missed Kendrick Lamar's Not Like Us, dude wrote that one and put it out FAST!
Led Zeppelin wrote "Rock and Roll" in about half an hour.
Im suprised Better Days by OneRepublic wasn't mentioned.
And, guys? It’s kinda weird not to have Ohio written by Neil Young on this list.
Electric Callboy castrop x spandau is missing
17:10 And it took Vanilla Ice les time to rip this song off!!!
Wonder how long baby shark was written.
With lyrics that complicated, I sure it took at least 15-20 seconds to come up with 🤣
