Once I was hit by a car and during those first moments I was shocked and thought "well it's only my bike that's broken no big deal" and I was mostly rambling about the dentist appointment I was on my way to ... so when I arrived at the dentist, a kind passer-by had called just in case I actually was hurt and would need a witness or detail information :)

    The first thing my Mother said when I started learning how to drive was, "Every time you get in the car remember these two things: Driving is a priviledge and that this vehicle is a weapon. Drive with awareness and respect and if you can't do that, call a taxi or walk."
    I'm so glad you and your Mom are okay. As a sighted person, I do not like crossing roads as well, as there are so many distracted negligent drivers that have almost run me over because they just aren't paying attention to what they're doing. I do have the ability to see them coming for the most part so I can't imagine what it is like to not be able to see the danger coming.
    Sending healing and good energy to Bennix. Hopefully, things will turn around soon for you all 💛

And " When you get in the car remember the danger. A car is a 1800k weapon. Think of Mykala (My friend) crossing the road." So that always made me take it seriously plus I did a whole semester of drivers ed in HS.

      I'm actually watching a channel on urban design and structuring of roads, and he ALWAYS compares Europe with North America for walkability. So, I've had this mentality that North America is just not built for people and only built for cars for such a long time. And this basically proves it. I mean, the cane and linkes marking the crosswalk are there for a reason, people!

      Also the car-dependent infrastructure of most US cities is so hostile to pedestrians that most people don’t walk to shops and stuff, so on busy streets drivers aren’t even LOOKING for pedestrians bc they just assume there won’t be any. And that is so dangerous. PSA to US motorists: not everyone has a car. Keep your eyes off your damn phone and on the road.

      Depends on the area though, it’s also on pedestrians to be safe. Don’t get me wrong obviously in Molly’s case she’s in the right.
      But in my touristy town people on their phones just walk out. Because we are known for being pedestrian friendly.
      And they take advantage of it to the point of blindly walking out. With no personal responsibility.
      They don’t even take a glance. Like don’t take it for granted that I can see you.

So I spent the next two hours soaked in blood with my skull open, climbing back down the mountain without any water… I kept myself as positive and conscious as I could while avoiding more falling rocks and boulders on the way down…. 🙃 And when the first boulder hit me, I saw it coming but I didn’t have anywhere to duck or go. If I would have let go of the mountain, I would have died. And a week later they closed the mountain because too many people have died and fallen off… And what’s even crazier, is that TODAY I just realized marks 4 days since I was hit. And I didn’t suffer any kind of brain damage. Sometimes when I have nightmares that spot swells and even will bleed on the surface. Absolutely wild. I don’t have any affinity for long walks in any kind of risky environment anymore.

    Back in December I was out walking with my dog in the middle of the city. Here, cars are actually supposed to stop and let you cross at marked crosswalks, unless there is a traffic signal in which case you obviously follow that. I had stopped, made sure I could be seen (had my white cane in one hand). I heard a car coming a löittle ways away but it had ample time to stop so I thought nothing of it and started walking... Except the car didn't stop! It only did so when it was literally like a foot away from hitting my poor dog! At which point I had a panic attack and backed up back to the side walk which was a couple of y ards behind me. The car then ust drove away, and people just kept walking past me as I was sitting on the sidewalk hyperventilating, crying and hugging my dog...

    I have also been almost hit by a car. I had the right of way too. I had a walking signal, I got to the intersection first, no cars were turning. When I was a few steps out a car whipped around the corner and had to swerve wildly to miss me. (Now that I think about it, that’s happened twice to me.) It’s a TERRIFYING situation. Like, a life-flashes-before-your-eyes situation, to have a car driving that fast, right at you. So sorry you’ve been having so much bad situations lately.

    I'm sorry you had to go through two scary situations. I'm visually impaired and I no longer go for walks where I live because I was hit by a car once and almost hit two other times when I was walking. Drivers just don't look and a car can come out of no where on an empty street. It's really scary especially because I was alone in all of those situations.

    Whenever I watch your videos, along with your remarkable independence I am also struck by the trust you have to have in those you know well around you as well as total strangers. We, who have no disability, don't generally think about that sort of mental stuff that goes along with whatever disability someone has, so I'm glad that you bring it up here. Side note, I worked at an elementary school for 23 years and I can't think of a day in all that time when our crossing guards didn't almost get hit or get hit by careless drivers in the school zone. Really folks! Pay attention while driving!!!

    I ( a sighted person) have been hit by so many drivers turning right because they don't look to the left. Thankfully it's always been very slow as they tend to slow down before an intersection. I've learned to look at the way the drivers head is turned and try to make eye contact (thankfully I can do that) before I cross.

    • @taraa8531
      @taraa8531 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't drive and so I walk a fair bit. I get so mad when I have the right of way, but because I'm taking care and notice when drivers don't look before turning, I manage to not get hit by cars. It's infuriating when they don't even notice they would have run you over.

    • @alexshaw8167
      @alexshaw8167 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How have you been hit by a car multiple times? Maybe you need to pay more attention to your surroundings while complaining about drivers not doing the same

    • @maureenp2248
      @maureenp2248 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @Alex Shaw
      Pedestrians always have the right of way at crosswalks, so legally/in principle there is no need for them to pay attention bc they should always just be able to cross the street without waiting for cars. Drivers, however, ARE obligated to pay attention and stop if a pedestrian is in the crosswalk.
      Obviously it is good for your personal safety to look out for irresponsible drivers doing illegal activity, but you're not doing anything "wrong" if you don't. Legally the accident would be considered 100% the fault of the driver.

  • @Tykoon22
    @Tykoon22 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I’ve almost been tagged while crossing the street at least twice because impatient drivers got a little too close when trying to pass behind me, i’ve walked right off the edge of several decks/docks and down a few flights of stairs I didn’t know existed, And then there was the time I almost got knocked the fuck out bye some guy twice my size because while I was standing in line behind him, I didn’t realize my ice cream cone had grazed the back of his jacket… at this point, I’ve learned that near death experiences are just a naturally occurring element in the life of a blind person.

    • @ragnkja
      @ragnkja ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As a sighted but somewhat clumsy person, I’m baffled by the idea that accidentally getting ice cream on someone’s jacket is a reason to start a fight.

    My daughter and I almost got run down in pretty much the same situation back when she was a toddler. I had her out for a walk on a bike with a push handle on the back, so she was in front of me. I noticed a car backing down his driveway ahead of us so I approached slowly, he looked around, I thought he saw us, and he was stopped for a while, so we proceeded. Suddenly he floored it in a reverse turn onto the road and I had to push my daughter on her little bike forward so fast and hard she fell off. He just narrowly missed crushing us and he was very apologetic when he realized what had happened. Apparently when he looked both ways before he hadn't noticed us (bright colours, middle of the day, sunny, I question his vision) and when he decided to proceed he was only looking in the direction he wanted to go and not back at what was coming.

    Driving is the most complex thing we do as humans every day, and because we do it every day (in most U.S cities) people get very apathetic to the very real potential dangers involved with driving. I work as an OT at a level 1 trauma hospital, and have definitely become a more defensive driver and more anxious in cars in general as a result (something my husband can attest to as I have become a nervous nelly passenger). I'm glad that you are okay, and that the incident wasn't worse.
    Also, that boulder story-- holy moly! That's terrifying! Again, glad everyone was safe.

She was appreciate of me informing her they were blind and therefore unable to have noticed her mistake. Sucks that the US is one of the countries that allow right turns on red lights. I was watching a couple from Japan where the Japanese husband was surprised about it as it’s illegal in Japan.
