22:52 - The building where the explosion actually happened was without electricity or wifi for 2-3 days while the electrical box was “drying out” and there was people working on it day and night for a good few days after!

100% agree, as someone who witnessed a terrible fire and many deaths as a result of it. Many people in the apartment believed staying in the house was the best option to avoid smoke inhalation, it wasn’t- they burned alive. Get everyone in your household out, knock for your immediate neighbours to tell them & GO.

So weird that there was a false alarm a week before the real alarm. Did the building manager say why the one electrical box exploded? Was this related to the fire in the communication room? Get the manager to clarify exactly what happened, and what steps will be taken to avoid this type of issue in the future. I admire Molly and her Mum for being able to relate this incident so clearly.

    So Glad you're safe!
So, about 13 years ago I had just moved in with my boyfriend (husband now) and we were awakened by super loud pounding on the door accompanied by shouting. "Police! Open up!" This was a 3 story apartment. We were terrified. Before we could even get to the door it was busted wide open and suddenly I was aware of the Fire alarm. We slept right through it up until that point. I had a habit at the time to just skip wearing pajamas because I love the feeling of sheets after a shower. I was so glad I randomly wore a nightgown that night! They were evacuating the building because the apartment below and one over to us was on fire. The occupant had fallen asleep smoking on the couch. It was a huge fire. We could see flames close to the window on the inside of the apartment. The Firefighters we're able to keep it contained to just the one apartment. I'm so thankful they made sure to get everyone out but it was one the scariest things ever to be woken up and burst in on like that.

@@alexshaw8167 Not sure why you used quotation marks as it feels invalidating my experience. Not everyone banging on a door announcing themselves to be police are, in fact, police.
Can it be frustrating that not everyone can hear the fire alarm as an emergency responder. Yes. I believe so. However, I don't think it would be infuriating unless people did hear the alarm and decided to not act in the interest of their own safety.

It's definitely possible to actually not hear a very loud fire alarm if you're in a deep sleep. I'm glad you guys ended up being ok. I remember one time an apartment fire alarm first became part of a dream, until I slowly woke up and realized it was real. My hubby was sound asleep beside me, so I roughly woke him up, and then ran to my toddlers room to find that he was also fast asleep! We got to the halfway and smelled smoke, so I was glad we'd actually woken up and got out. In the end, it turned out that someone had put lit matches into a few mail boxes and it was more smoke than anything, but still...😳 I couldn't get over how the alarm didn't startle us all awake immediately.

As much as it hurts me to hear you didn’t want to be alive, I appreciate you saying it openly. I feel like a lot of people make it seem like you shouldn’t talk about depression/unaliving thoughts or think if you say it you are an active threat to yourself. I think a lot of unaliving could be avoided if people would just openly listen to how someone is truly feeling and not give some sappy speech or get so uncomfortable with the topic. However I didn’t say a word and just kept those thoughts to myself. I know for fact if I felt it was okay or didn’t fear being taken away and put in a psych ward if I was to talk about how I feel with someone. Exactly like you said just having someone listen can truly make a major difference. I absolutely would have felt so much better.

I get a caution feeling on this one. That many electrical explosions and the lights and AC not working in multiple units hours before could mean the apartment complex is not maintained well. Remember the condo building that collapsed in Florida? It wasn't maintained bc of owner disputes and lack of action over time. It's worth looking into.
That said, you were protected again. Your waking up 30 minutes before the alarm both times is not a coincidence. I was once woken up by a dream in which I was on the phone saying "someone is here that doesn't belong." Indeed someone was. I had to wake up others and prepare to defend myself. Thankfully we caught the guy and we were all safe.

A couple of decades ago I had an electrical fire in the apartment I had been in for almost 10 years, which was just 3 stacked units in one building. (The only fire alarms were in the external hallways, front and back, between apartments. It had never been an issue before.) The fire started around 2am by a faulty extension cord that was under my bed. The fire ate its way through my bed and, once it breached the edges, made its way into my closet. Unbeknownst to me, my ex had left some fireworks (which are illegal in my state) in my closet. So, while I was (luckily) watching a movie with a friend in my living room, our night was disturbed by the sounds of fireworks exploding in my bedroom! The fire alarms didn't go off until we opened the apartment door to leave the building! Thank goodness for cell phones and the fact that the fire department was just a couple blocks away! They were able to get to us quickly, which saved the building from having more damage than just my room, but my entire room was gutted by the fire. (Every time I see a design show where they paint the walls super dark, I cringe at the amount of lights the owner of that room will need to be able to see anything in the room! We had to have a stadium light brought up to a window to be able to see enough to clean out the room because the soot on the walls just swallowed the light in the room!) I am also grateful that I had renters insurance, or I would never have been able to replace some of the things that got ruined. (Many things were irreplaceable, like old home movies and my childhood dollhouse, but I was able to afford a brand new bed and dresser.)

My first college I attended was in southern California and the dorm apartment complex constantly had fire alarms going off in the middle of the night. It was terrifying and so many stairs to walk down. I'm visually impaired and grew up in a small country town so I was not used to all of this in a big city. One time it was because some idiots clogged all the toilets and flooded two floors and another someone started a fire that spread. I left that college after my freshman year because it was a party school and it was in the top ten most dangerous campus in the US. I'm glad you and your mom and everyone in your buildings are safe.

My explosion story: one Saturday night after celebrating my birthday with my family, I was asleep in my room with the windows open. A big explosion woke me up at 3 am and I felt the heat on my face and my ear closest to the window was ringing and buzzing. After a moment of complete silence I heard people screaming, blood curling screams including a woman screaming for her baby. I ran onto the balcony and to find the building in front of ours was on fire, massive flames, as well as a couple of trees in between the building and ours.
Turns out an old person decided to commit suicide with gas bottles on the 1st floor (it was an 8 storey building). He had amassed loads of gas bottles and some didn't explode and were scattered onto the lawn.
I had no clue if there were any casualties until the end of the next day but turns out some people in the flats above had been woken up by the smell of gas and had evacuated minutes before the explosion. Also, the fire trucks took a good 20 minutes to show up, which felt like an eternity, seeing the building on fire and not knowing if people could exit or were trapped inside.
I had PTSD for a good few years after that.

Without the explotion, this actually happend to an electric box near my house. Our light had started flickering like a disco light, our heating unit were making strange sounds and it went on for a few days, we tried to figure out if there was anything wrong in our house, got told by someone that know electric things that it most likely wasn't and called to get someone to check it around christmas time. They were not happy, they though it was something in our electricity cabinet and checked, but couldn't find anything. They said they would be back and went away for like an hour, comes back and tells us that the electric box to our house (thankfulle over the street and up a bit from us) was actually burning. It was nice to have the lights and heating unit working normal again after that and them being less annoyed when they came back, because it had been an actual thing and something that had to do with their job rather than an in house easy fix.

First of all I would just like to say I'm so glad you're safe, and I'm sorry about what you went through, that sounds terrifying.
My fire story: This happened in November..so this is where it starts...I was just sitting in my room with a blanket because it was really cold(get's pretty cold by November where I live), then I hear fire alarms start blaring and suddenly my dad burst into my room saying, "Fire! We have to get out!" It seemed, and still seems so surreal to me that this actually happened. I had to wake up my older brother Matt.(Just for background info I have like 7 siblings that are in the house..) And all I remember going downstairs was covering my face with my shirt, I couldn't see anything the smoke was extremely dark, making it difficult to find the way out, I remember yelling "I can't see, where's the exit??!?" I did eventually find my way out and all I saw was thick, dark smoke coming out of the windows. All I did was cry at the sight, that was my home I've lived in my whole life, which was getting destroyed right before my very eyes.. There was so many fire trucks that day, that they lined up at least half of the road. Going through this really helped to show me how many good people are in the world though, many people from our neighborhood, and even some people people that were relatively far from our neighborhood came and gave us blankets, and even let us borrow their shoes. I really hope I get to help them someday, I owe so much to everyone that helped me. And I still remember what happened every single day..My house ended up getting fully knocked down and is being rebuilt, hopefully by this December it will be finished. Sorry if this is long, and to anybody that read this far, thank you.

Molly, you are so beautiful, and you bring so much positivity, hope, and love to people. Life is about ups and downs, everything will work out. I know you're going through a rough patch but things trust me will get better. Story: When my son was little, I smelled something weird in the apartment, and it made me nervous so I slept with the carbon monoxide detector in the living room. The next day I go to work as a teacher, and I come home. Normally, I just crash and fall asleep. However, this night, my son who was small at the time, went out with his Dad, and I went to the mall which I normally NEVER do. So when I got home my block was filled with fire trucks, and my first thought was oh, it was a gas explosion. It was actually my house that went on fire! It was an electrical fire in the walls caused by the fan in the bathroom. To this day, I never use a fan in the bathroom. If my son was home, he would have been in the room next to where the fire started!! God did protect us because that was never our normal routine to be out of the house. I lived in a mother/daughter house, and the woman upstairs saw flames coming up through the floor, she was okay. She tought I left a candle on, but it was the bathroom fan. I ended up living with my sister until they fixed the house. Molly, love you!!!

That’s a terrifying situation to be in, especially disabled. I’m glad you’re all ok! I hope things get better for you, Molly soon!
I used live in a Apartment Building when I was little, the Fire Alarms went off and We had to exit the building using the front stairwell. (The power was out, except for the emergency lights near each exit. I was able to see where the exit signs were and those lights thankfully!) The elevators were also shut off too. I was with My Dad and My Visually Impaired Twin Brother Anthony, without a White Canes yet. So My Dad had a bright flashlight so We can see the stairs going down to the parking garage/basement of our building. The Fire Department was there, nobody was injured or anything! The power went back on, not long after We left for a walk.

You are right about people not taking alarms seriously. I believe it was last year my phone alerted to a Tornado warning in the middle of the night, followed by the town sirens going off. From what I could tell I was the only one in my neighborhood who gathered my dog up and locked us in the bathroom. The tornado hit less than a mile from here. I believe it killed one person.
So, I wouldn't call those near-death experiences really... When I was 7 or 8, I had what is considered a real NDE Near Death Experience. I went over the handlebars of my bike on a big hill. I was gone and I mean GONE! I left my body, flat lined for a bit and went home for a visit to the land of the dead people. I don't know why that is considered a "near"-death experience when I actually died. I would think what you are talking about would be considered near death??? When I came back to my body and opened my eyes there happened to be a nurse at the scene of the accident and she was talking to me about dying. I was so confused because I couldn't figure out why she was talking about death to such a small young child. I remembered where I went, but I never put that together with being dead. That is the only thing I remember for 3 either days or weeks. I don't know how I got home; I don't know if I went to a hospital. I don't know what happened during that time. It is all just blackness in my memory. My family never talked about it or allowed me to talk about it, so I have no information. Everything from before the accident is also gone. All my memories from before the accident are of me holding a picture and an adult telling me a story of what happened that day. That is my NDE story!

This has happened to me. I have this neighbor a few blocks away that uses some yard machine that sounds IDENTICAL to the tornado siren. We are used to it going off every evening in the summer, so we don't think anything about it. One evening, the tornado siren DID go off. We didn't know and thought it was that machine. The police came by and asked why we were not doing anything. Why would they let anyone use a machine like that? We can't tell the difference between that and a real tornado siren.
    Problem!

In the city I grew up in (bit north of LA), I loved to go to this nice shopping & pier area by the beach, and I'd always park in the same large parking garage. One day a couple years ago, my boyfriend and I were parked on the second floor, sitting in the car, just hanging out, when all of a sudden we hear this loud BOOM.
I thought it was a gunshot, which is likely because there is a lot of crime where I'm from, and I wanted to leave. Started the car again, backed out, went down the ramp and around the corner only to see a car totally engulfed in flames. The entire first level was quickly filling with dense black smoke, and we couldn't get out.
We decided to just repark the car and leave as quickly as we could down the staircase with the crowd of people who were also trying to escape. We went and got ice cream to calm down and carried on with our activities because there wasn't really anything else we could do.
I guess there was some kind of explosive in the trunk of the car. I'm still not sure exactly what happened, but that shit was scary!! Luckily nobody was injured.

It's so important to have a fire plan of your own, no matter what! Only you truly know your limits so include that in planning. For example in my situation it's my husband, myself, and our cat. We live in a 3rd floor walk up where the stairs are outside. We're in the southeast USA and it's hot and humid year round. I have severe asthma and allergies nearly year round so the stairs are doable as needed but I simply cannot make extra trips at all times depending on how my breathing is. My husband on the other hand is fit and used to stairs, doesn't mind making extra trips and all of that. Our building has frequent fire alarms, at times there have been multiple in a week but rarely less than one every 2-3 months. They're always false alarms. I also have a fear (serious diagnosed anxiety) that if we both went down and there was a real fire, the authorities won't let us back up to get our cat. I know for a fact this happens and though I understand why, I refuse to put my life above an animal I'm responsible for and have essentially imprisoned. So our plan is that my husband takes his phone and goes down to check out what's happening, and I put our cat in the pet carrier and we wait. Husband texts me what's going on, if it's a false alarm he comes back up, if not I will take my cat and go down too.

My fire alarm story: My family moved to America from England about 8 years ago and the first week we were here, we stayed in a hotel. On the 2nd or 3rd night of staying in this hotel, the fire alarm started going off at like 1:45 am and we heard a lot of fast footsteps in the hallway. We quickly put some clothes on over our pajamas and ran out of the room and ran to the stairs. When we got to the stairwell I looked up at the floors above us and saw tons of smoke trickling down towards my floor. So we ran down the stairs and went outside where most of the other people were waiting. Then like 3 firetrucks showed up and firefighters just burst out of them and were yelling for us to get out of the way as some of them ran inside. About 10 minutes later three of the firefighters came back out with an elderly man who apparently brought a toaster into his room and then cut a hot pocket in half and put it in the toaster (open side down). He then fell asleep and this hot pocket was in the toaster burning and on fire for about an hour. I don’t know what happened to him but everyone just casually went back inside at about 3 am. I was 7 when this happened and I already didn’t want to move this made me want to leave even more than I already did. Also at school the hallway outside of my classroom caught on fire when I was in 5th grade.

Glad you're ok... My Guide Dog Atari and I feel your pain re: fire alarm noise in apartments. Recently, they came to test alarms in our buildings and asked that we Not leave since they were fixing my heater at the same time. My working dog would have none of that ( intelligent disobedience when I told him to stay with me), = fire alarms a big deal for him....he drags me outside every time he hears one, harness on or off... that part is good, but the getting upset part is very unlike him, he is nearing Retirement (I can hardly type the "R" word !) and fire alarms seem to bother him even more these days. Hope this 3rd event is the end of your recent troubles. Thanks Heaps for sharing your stories and asking for ours, Mary and Atari

I had a frustrating experience when I lived in a top floor apartment and I was home alone with 3 cats during a fire alarm. No one had their carriers where I could get to them. Alice is an angel cat and will regularly curl up in tote bags, so I scoop her into one and toss her under my arm on my shoulder. I dump out my roommates hamper and put his cat, Zoe, in his hamper and she's a good girl and will stay in for about a minute before she hops out. My boy, Oliver will stay in the hamper for 10-30 seconds. I get them both in the hamper, and place Alice in the tote on top of the lid to keep it closed grab my keys open the door, for the alarm to stop. I'm really glad I didn't have to carry 3 cats down 6 flights of stairs in make shift carriers, and then keep them calm outside asking neighbors for help but when the roommates got home I told them what for.

I live in residence for school, and I've been through a record number of fire alarms this year! I'd estimate close to 30 alarms that I have been present for, and I currently live on the 10th floor of my building. When they started, it was always between 2am and 5am, so my brain wouldn't let me sleep anymore and would make me think I heard the alarm every time I tried to fall asleep. Thankfully they've slowed down significantly (though I probably just jinxed it lol). Ours were mostly malicious pulls and ppl tampering with the bathroom alarms so they could smoke, but we also had at least one where someone put popcorn in the microwave for way too long and then left it to catch fire (happened on my floor that time, but thankfully I was visiting family that week).

ugh omg your point about frequent fire alarms being kind of unsafe is so true. My junior year of college, I lived in a building where the fire alarm would go off extremely frequently, like sometimes multiple times a week, and it was almost always in the middle of the night. My roommate was so sick of being woken up that she just stopped leaving the room when the fire alarm went off bc it was always just like "oh someone burnt mac & cheese in the microwave again", and I think a lot of people did the same.

I’m so glad you made it out and everyone was OK it certainly is a jarring experience!
When my husband of now 11 years and I had our first apartment it was kind of a crappy apartment but we were young and poor and it was all we could afford. Earlier that week and the week before there had been a couple of other fires, but the week before that we had just renewed our lease 😶😬. One morning we woke up (it was a Saturday) and we were going to get coffee and pastries at our local coffee shop. As we were walking to the car in our sweatpants and hoodies we noticed some smoke coming from the junction box so I go in our apartment and I grab our file box and my laptop and put it in my car while my husband goes to the managers office to tell them what is going on. Keep in mind at this time there are no fire alarms going off because we are in a ghetto ass apartment so the manager the poor woman yells “oh shit! Not again! Get everyone out!”. So my husband the manager and I go around to buildings that are attached and bang on all the doors walls windows everything we can find that might make noise and yelling for everyone to get out fire fire get out. Several of the people across from us were single parents so they were grabbing their kids not even caring about if they had diapers or not(I wouldn’t either I don’t have kids and I would just be like grab the kids let’s go) we get everyone out and smoke starts coming out of the windows of the apartment across from us. My husband goes into our apartment one last time to make sure things are unplugged and turned off and runs back out. By that time the fire department is there and blocking off the parking lot. This was before I knew I had mental health issues so I had a full-blown panic attack and collapsed on the grass luckily a nurse from the apartment across the street saw me going down and made sure I was safe and covered me with a quilt. I still have that quilt. She handed other people blankets from her home and then disappeared like an angel. I tried to find her later to give her back her quilt but she was nowhere to be found. The apartment across from us was in shambles, The only thing left or black support beam and the floorboards. At the front door of the apartment just 6 feet away was a charred tennis shoe of a toddler luckily both the little girl and the mother were safe she asked us for a trash bag so she could collect the last few things they had left. Luckily for us the fire head only licked the roof and the firefighters had to bust down our door to make sure that all hotspots were extinguished. The only thing we lost were a few clothes that I had left scattered on the floor and because they were soaked and covered with insulation and all of our food that was in the cabinet. The building had violated fire code because there was no fire break in between the two buildings. Another apartment across from us had fireworks and car parts in his apartment and even though his apartment was destroyed somehow those fireworks did not ignite. I think God for that every day. We were there till two in the morning loading a horse trailer that my dad had brought from our family farm an hour away with the things we had. We tried to help anyone else we could get the things they had left in the Red Cross Came and made sure that children and families head simple supplies. The cops came by to make sure we were not looting and luckily I had my current address on my drivers license they asked if there was anyway they could help but we were almost done so they drove away. Not long after a woman drove by and handed me an envelope and said I’m so sorry God bless you, in that envelope there was money for gas so we could make it to the farm where we would stay with my family. It took days and days and days of washing and airing out but we finally got the smoke smell out of our clothes and most of our furniture. I am just thankful that we had furniture, most people had nothing. At that time our young unexperienced minds didn’t think it important to have renters insurance cell if we would have lost a lot of things it would’ve been devastating. Turned out later that all the fires that were experienced within the past couple of months or due to faulty wiring and building code violations. We went to turn in our keys and end our lease because our apartment was uninhabitable and they asked us if we would like to just stay in another apartment at the complex and renew our lease there. It took a while but we were refunded our deposit and our rent -2 days but I was not about to fight we were safe. A few days later after scrambling we found an apartment that we could barely afford and lived there for a couple of years (with renters insurance) now we have our dream home. 10 years later the sound of the heat are coming on still gives us flashbacks but with the eight Smoke detectors in our new home we are better prepared. It is still some thing that my husband and I deal with in our therapy from time to time. these experiences Strengthened our marriage and brought me closer to taking care of my mental health. That quilt that was placed on me an Angel is now On our bed that we share with my emotional support dog. I sure as hell wouldn’t do it again but I’m glad we are better for it.

That’s a crazy story. Speaking of electrical fires this past semester there was an electrical fire in one of the dorms on campus during finals week like literally 11pm in the middle of finals week. It was insane
