  • Colostomy and ileostomy nursing care video for the NCLEX exam. Learn about the types of gastrointestinal ostomies, such as the colostomy and ileostomy. The types of colostomies include the ascending colostomy, transverse colostomy, double-barrel colostomy, descending colostomy, and sigmoid colostomy. An ostomy is a surgical opening created on the surface of the abdomen to allow stool (waste) to exit the body rather than through the rectum. Gastrointestinal ostomies will be formed from the small or large intestine. A colostomy is a surgical opening created to bring the LARGE intestine (also called colon) to the surface of the abdomen. An ileostomy is an opening created to bring the SMALL intestine to the surface of the abdomen (specifically the ileum). As a nurse providing care to a patient with a GI ostomy, it is important to know the pre-opt/post-opt care along with diet, medication restrictions (no enteric-coated and sustained-released medications) for the ileostomy, the different types of ostomies, stoma care, and the stool consistency expected from the ostomy. Depending on the type of ostomy and its location, the patient should have the following stool types: Ascending: liquid stool, Transverse: lose to partly formed stool, and Descending/Sigmoid: similar to normal consistency, and ileostomy: liquid stool.

P.s. been watching you for years. Started as a RN student… now watching to precept new LPN, RN’s. They come fresh from school. I like to show (most learning is hands on).. but with new nurses I think it may help going back to anatomy and physiology (they are use to this to develop critical thinking).

Wow this video is very educational. My daughter had a ileostomy as a newborn. The surgeons and nurses educated us as much as they could but the vocabulary was and the anatomy of the surgery was a difficult to understand. Especially when trying to describe what the surgeons had done for her! And what her care would be like going forward. I wish I had this video back then to help explain it. Thank you for posting this it has cleared up so many misconceptions I had and will help me describe her condition more accurately.

Thank you. I know this as a med-surg nurse… but am preceptor to new nurse. Needed refresher on how to present to my student… other than we do this or that, and the why. I wanted to cover this common issue in a way that makes critical thinking since .. vs how I present to the patient.

I love your videos. You're just too awesome. I was wondering if you can do a video about NCLEX style questions. I happened to fail the NCLEX few times. I think to me it's the "vagueness" answer choices that gets me. I used a lot of resources but the ACTUAL NCLEX answer choices is nothing like from the reviews I've used. I'm talking about KAPLAN, UWORLD, Saunders, Lippincott, and so on. I do fairly okay on the practice questions because the answer style choices are direct. So, if you know any way there is a method of answering these "vague" actual NCLEX questions, this would be very nice. The wordings they use are so tricky and makes you second guess a lot. I also have many friends who share similar concerns about this. Appreciate all the help.
