I am 73 years old and was in a minor car accident in September 2016. I was thrown forward with such force that my seat belt caused the upper part of my large intestine to burst. That went undiagnosed for more than three weeks. When the pain was so bad I could not stand it I went back to the ER where the problem was finally diagnosed. I was put to sleep. A week later( September 21)I was dying so they finally did emergency surgery. I survived but was kept asleep to speed the healing process until November 1. When I woke up I was minus 18 in. of colon, plus a colostomy bag and a football-sized hole in my stomach and no belly button. My life will never be the same. The hole has not completely healed so I still spend most of my day on my back with my wife caring for me. Your video has made me realize I am still alive and I can still have a life and care for myself when I am fully healed. Thank you for your unselfish generosity to others who are still struggling.
So sorry about this... Has your doctor talked to you about a jpouch? If it is available to me, I would much rather have a jpouch than an ostemy bag. What a way to wake up... thank goodness you have a wife to help you!

Hi you have no idea how much you helping us who are going through the same thing, I had my operation 8years ago with a permanent bag and i learned everything I'm watching by trial and error took me months to get the hang of it but I got it to an art now,you so young and beautiful, sorry you had to go through this but I suppose that's life may God bless you and your family amen, cheers.
I had a bag after a car accident when I was 15. I woke up out of surgery and two weeks later I realized I had a bag. U never even heard of it. I was so scared. Your so brave. I'm over here crying thinking about how I felt. I eventually got used to it, but it was still hard. I got mine reversed after 6 months. Your amazing. And I love you.
@@ceciliaferreira9787 I'm 35 now and I was in my car accident at the age of 15. My colostomy was reversed about 6 months after the accident. I'm doing OK now, I still have complications though. I was good for about 10 years up until 2 years ago, I was in the hospital twice, my intestines were kinked I think, but they corrected themselves without surgery after about 5 days in the hospital. Thanks for sharing Genevieve. Car accident here also. Dr said to me, David, we've had you in a coma. You've broken your back in a couple of places. I said will I walk again? He said I should be OK. In and out of consciousness for a couple of days because of medication, I kept waking up during the night, feeling these weird things in my skin. They were 32 staples going up my middle. I wasn't told I had punctured my small and large intestine, and had to have colostomy surgery. Anyhooo, daunting and a bit scared to start with, got used to it after 6 months, I also had a reversal. I can't even imagine. People, we need to stop complaining about the small crap in our lives which is nothing compared to the day to day of people with different medical conditions.
I understand that you are trying to write a positive comment on we're trying to be positive. But actually these types of comments are what's called "negative good comments". Meaning even though you don't you try to have positive comment, it was actually very negative. How do you think the uploader feels when you say stuff like that? How do you think you make them feel when you say gosh you can't even imagine how you couldn't go through this? Epic representative again, I know you meant to be positive and was not intentional. It's like saying to somebody in a wheelchair with no legs and telling them "gosh you're so strong I don't know how I would ever live like that" ... how do you think your comment makes the person in the wheelchair feel? Your comment does more that'd been good, even though you were genuinely trying to make them feel better, so just some advice next time, if you're ever in that position and you think of something like that to say, it's better not to say anything then to say something like that.
Coolguy... when we live in a world with the Kardashians and their focus on plastic surgery, complete self focus, or a world full of materialism, then I wanted to remind people there are way more important lessons to learn. One being, those less fortunate for any number of reasons. Sorry you didn't get my message. I think the people who share their lives like this young lady, are heroes, and a wonderful example for the rest of us.

In fact, I'm applauding this young lady for living her life to the fullest in spite of her ostomy, and going a step further to help others with a similar health issue.

I don’t have an ostomy bag, but I saw this video pop up, and I was curious. I just want to say to anyone with one, that it’s okay, and that you all are very amazing to go through this. One thing I want to ask, How often would you have to change the bag?
My step father changes his in the morning and of a night after his shower but he pre cuts all his bags (has one for urine and one for stool) so all he has to do is clean the area and apply the bag, he doesn’t need all the same stuff as this lovely lady so it doesn’t require so much preparation
I had to have an ostomy bag up until I was 7. I had mine to drain bile that wasn't flowing properly through my liver. They told my mom, that it could kill me to take the stoma off, but I lived. Then 3 days before my 9th birthday I had a liver transplant. I just want to know if her bowls are constantly going into her bag? My bile constantly flowed into my bag.
The Invisible Child the bullet hit my intestines and that’s why I needed a colostomy bag for six months. After they reversed it I almost died again cuz 2 months after surgery my intestines had kinked up and healed that way
I am an RN, and have had to change, and teach patients how to do their own colostomy care. This video was great! Your matter of fact attitude is encouraging that this doesn't have to be a devistating life change. You can live a normal lifestyle with just a few minor changes. It doesnt have to ruin life,but it is a full time job.especially if u are like me and have a short transit as ive had 5 resections and have barely any small bowel left.short transit and dumping syndrome make it a nightmare cuz u cant plan a time to check on it.u really have to watch what you eat.im a firm believer in stoma paste and blowdrying mine rather than using body heat.u can also use a cynoacrylate that makes the skin around your stoma hard as its what super glue is made of.its not bonding like sg but its purple and will really help those with excess skin create a solid base.i use the cyanoacrylate called "MARATHON" AND ITS.CHANGED MY LIFE .but blowdrying has also been just as vip as i am a squirter with my short bowel transit.so i can apply cavalon barrier,paste powder if im rashy or burned and applly it all fast and before i squirt where if im using a hand fan its a 30sec min wait for dryness vs 5seconds and a warm bonding.hope this helps anyone. Just to clear the air i have no colon and have an ileostomy that is high om the chest ,almost at the brest level.so mine is naturally a harder thing to deal with as the acid is pure and potent.the smell is not as bad but my output is 99%liquid inspite of taking fiber,questran,fiber cookies,max lomotil anti diherriah medication so it.is what will kill me in the long term.i dont have enough intestine to asorb my electrolytes and will often get kidney failure,dehydration, cramping really bad,to the point i look like i have seized up.i wouldnt wish it on anyone,but im fighting till i die.......sorry for such a long post

I realized I never said thank you for this video. I watched this video about 2-3 years ago when I was diagnosed with bowel obstruction ( most likely Crohn's disease) and they told me I had a possibility of having a colostomy bag. I was about 11 and of course I was scared because I didn't want people to judge me. I posted a comment on here talking about how I was scared about it and I got a lot of comments that helped me calm down. The sweet comments and this video has really helped me and I really needed to give you a proper thank you. I don't what I would of done to myself if I didn't have this video. I really appreciate you!

I bet this is a drastic change, so I applaud the fact that people are open about this. As a graduated nurse and studying for her license exam, thank you for all the feedback. I would never of guessed seeing anything BTS related. Watching videos for educational purposes can be dangerous since I have BTS videos around me calling me. My mum wears a bag and she has for the past 30 years. She will always have it. She never coplains about it she just gets on with it. I am really proud of her and everyone else who has to go through this life changing condition. Just stay strong and know it will get easier everyday. X
I have Crohn’s and I took care of my daughter’s temporary ileostomy 2 years ago for 3 months. I know that most of the supplies are bought directly from the suppliers but I think if they were also sold in pharmacies and if people saw commercials on tv for supplies along with someone explaining the reason for them it would allow everyone to become familiar with ostomies. Everyone should at least be aware of the procedure and why people need them. I am so grateful for all of the people making these tutorials for osteomates and their caregivers. Thank you!

the fact that you make that seem so easy and how you seem to have such a great attitude about this is truly amazing. the way you seem to handle it should be and probably is very inspirational. I honestly think that not only people with issues similar to yours should watch this, but anyone with any kind of issue. Anyone with a body that doesn't work right should see this. When I hear or see someone going through something, whether it's something like your issue, or this young guy that goes to the same physical therapy place I do... who cant walk but tries so hard everyday it just makes my issues seem so small and make me want to do better with my issues since if you, and that guy can.... 😫 Omg this reminds of my Dad. He wore a bag the last 3 years of his life and I took over changing and cleaning him from the Nurses. I made my own template and looked after it. When the nurses changed him he ALWAYS leaked! Idk how I got to this video but almost brings me to 😭 remembering my Dad. ❤️ to everyone who wears a bag.

Tricia Miller I have an ostomy and I'm 14, what do you mean by does it hurt? Like when you change the bag? It doesn't hurt to change the bag it just feels like you're pulling off like a band aid a little bit but that is what the adhesive remover is for. And it doesn't gross me out because it is just a normal bodily function.

I’m a nursing student and I just wanted to tell you that you are an amazing example especially for younger people who have to have any type of stoma for whatever reason. Like you said you are still new but you are also so confident and seem to be adjusting to this big change beautifully! It can be difficult but you are an amazing person and are so brave for being willing to make these videos for people to learn from or for those who are just curious!! I am learning about stomas and ostomy bag care for my nursing 101 course. This video has actually been far more effective than anything they've given us as far as teaching materials. Thank you for being willing to teach us future nurses, too.
Girl, let me tell you something: you're absolutely amazing!!! I'm a nursing student and I've dealt with a lot of people with stomas and most of them couldn't accept that new thing about them and were ashamed of it. The fact that you have the courage to share this with the world really amazes me because a lot people still don't know what's a stoma and what it actually means to the people who have them and it's important to talk about it and don't make it a taboo. When I worked with developementally disabled adults, I'd a client who required this type of medical care. He was non-verbal, so I thank you for allowing me to see/hear what he was dealing with. Btw, the folks who, in your comments, say it;s gross- every good mother has cleaned poop from their baby and not minded it at all (well, sometimes,) but it's all part of being human! Thank you for putting yourself "out there" for the world to see. And yes, you're cute! Glad you already have a Mom cuz otherwise I'd be tempted to adopt!
My mom is 62 and she might get an ostomy bag. She was very upset in the beginning until she saw videos like yours. She told me "if these pretty young girls aren't ashamed of it, me that I have nothing to show off I can do it!". She felt encouraged by your bravery and confidence. So thank you!!!
Hi Laura, my mom will be 80 years of age soon, at the beginning of this year she needed to have an emergency ileostmy, and she was completely unable to tend to it by herself when she returned home, due to how sick she was, (and I was utterly clueless as well). We did get some information from the healthcare workers, but, as we were still in need of further demonstration, etc., I searched the internet and so fortunately came across some of your videos and found them to be very helpful. I just want to thank you so very very much, you have been a huge help to me in helping my mom, and now, little by little, as her health improves, and through watching your videos, she is beginning to be able to do some of her ileostomy care on her own.

This is incredible! Thank you so much for sharing and showing others how this works. I had stage 4 colorectal cancer five years ago and had to have the same ileostomy and it was very traumatic because no one knew how to instruct me on how to take care of one and change one out. I was basically sent home with a bit of equipment and figure it out on my own. There was only one ostomy nurse for a large area and she was in the process of retiring plus she just didn’t seem too well informed. Your bravery to show how to do this can help so many others through this process. I’m sure your mom is very proud of you. I had my ileostomy reversed after several months.
This was such a comfort to me five years ago when I was diagnosed with colonrectal cancer. It made things so much more straight up for me...less shame and embarrassment. Just matterafact...now my brother is going through something very similar and I can send it to him. Thank you so much for this

Seven years later...I just wanted to thank you for posting this video to help other people with ostomy bags, and those who don't know anything about them, to learn. You're positive and calm way was nice to see. It's not easy to post the challenges in our lives (most people just show the highlights), but it's so good to include people and show them that as we may have differences, we are all, essentially, the same. It does a world of good in dispelling ignorance and fear. It sounds corny, but it's true. Because I knew someone with cerebral palsy growing up, when I met someone or saw someone with the same or other differences, I felt comfortable to communicate with them as a person, just like any other person I'd meet. Thanks again for sharing part of your life!

This video resurfaced in my feed. I actually watched this video back in 2013 when I was first diagnosed with UC. I watched this to educate myself and relate to someone when I had no idea what the disease was. Thought this will probably be my life at some point but not anytime soon. Less than a year into diagnosis I had emergency surgery and had my own temp stoma. I was super confident with changing my bag because of this video. I honestly can't imagine how I would have handled such a lifestyle change without causally watching this beforehand. Thanks for informing stoma owners and curious viewers!

Hi I'm Simon and I used to do this , when I was nursing many years ago. I used soapy water, and a small disposable wipe , and clean around the stoma . All of this brings back memories, for me . People may think that this is sqwimish , but you are doing a great job in educating people . All the best . Simon X
And also when you clean around the stoma , you can use disposable gloves . So infection doesn't spread , and as especially if you have any pets around . Simon x

OMG I had to have a colostomy for nearly a year. For the 1st 6 months I was in the hospital and nurses changed it. When I was sent home, I was on my own! I just had to remember what they did in the hospital. I wish I had had this lesson! You are helping many people.

Hi, hope everything still going well for you, i had my ileostomy in 1979 when i was 28 years old (a lifetime ago) and i use a 2 piece system i could never get on with 1 piece also i have never sat down and done a bag change that just seamed a weird thing to do but i also find very cold water after i have cleaned up and before applying bag stops stoma working for awhile also as a male a bit hairy so need to shave, i preheat the backplate and ring having it between my thighs whilst doing all the prepwork but it only takes a few minutes to do, but thats 40 years of doing it and in 1979 (in the uk) you were seriously ill , had opp, discharged from hospital and basically left to your own devices, its great that their is so much information about now, anyhow stay safe and enjoy life

I'm 61 years old and just got a colostomy less than two weeks ago. Mine is so difficult to cut out because I have a huge open area surrounding my little stoma. I'm still pretty inept with cutting. Hopefully it will close so I have a stoma like yours. It would be certainly easier to cut, lol. I still have trouble with leaking as well. If I get through two days without one it's amazing! I have to say that you shared this teaching with so much grace and dignity. You are my new favorite person!
Good too hear from you! I am well and having more luck with my colostomy although as with any colostomy there is going to be issues. I'm told I'll never have a normal stoma it will always remain teensy but it works! Anyway, I'm hoping that you are well and thriving!

I just came across your TH-cam channel and I’m happy I did! I also have crohns and ulcerative colitis and had my entire colon removed and a little bit of my small intestine. I was 16 when I went through three surgeries and had a colostomy bag and a double stoma colostomy bag. My third surgery I actually got a reconnect luckily but just wanted to say you are way stronger then I was when I went through it all. Hi! I had my colon removed and subsequent ileostomy surgery 3 1/2 years ago, after suffering with UC for 40 years. I use a 2-piece Hollister system. Over the years since my surgery I experimented with lots of different ways to change my skin barrier/flange and bag. For me, I've found that standing over the toilet is the cleanest and fastest way to change these devices. I prepare everything way in advance (cut the hole in the flange, get the bag sealed, and I apply the Hollister Karaya paste to the inside of the flange even before I remove the flange and bag). Many times, I will then get in the shower for a morning or evening shower. I keep a folded piece of toilet paper in the shower with me, and I cover my stoma before I leave the shower in case any stool comes out in that 5 second time span between leaving the shower and standing over the toilet. When I get out I dry my stoma area off and then apply the flange and bag. By doing it in the shower and then standing over the toilet, any stool that comes out either goes down the shower drain or into the toilet. I used to use wipes and powder, etc,, but I don't use those products any more: I find the flange sticks better with no other products. I normally am able to go abut 4-7 days between changes..The change itself takes less than 3 minutes after I exit the shower. If I need to change it and a shower is not a possibility, I still do it standing over the toilet for stool reasons, and the entire change from start to finish takes about 10 minutes..BTW, I bought a few sets of curved stainless steel scissors on ebay for cutting the whole in the flange.....they work wonders! Good luck to everyone who has gone through the operation or who is suffering and may be having this surgery in the future. I am a home improvement contractor and am very active and my ileostomy has not kept me from doing anything I want to do!

I am 73 years old and was in a minor car accident in September 2016. I was thrown forward with such force that my seat belt caused the upper part of my large intestine to burst. That went undiagnosed for more than three weeks. When the pain was so bad I could not stand it I went back to the ER where the problem was finally diagnosed. I was put to sleep. A week later( September 21)I was dying so they finally did emergency surgery. I survived but was kept asleep to speed the healing process until November 1. When I woke up I was minus 18 in. of colon, plus a colostomy bag and a football-sized hole in my stomach and no belly button. My life will never be the same. The hole has not completely healed so I still spend most of my day on my back with my wife caring for me. Your video has made me realize I am still alive and I can still have a life and care for myself when I am fully healed. Thank you for your unselfish generosity to others who are still struggling.

Hi you have no idea how much you helping us who are going through the same thing, I had my operation 8years ago with a permanent bag and i learned everything I'm watching by trial and error took me months to get the hang of it but I got it to an art now,you so young and beautiful, sorry you had to go through this but I suppose that's life may God bless you and your family amen, cheers.

I had a bag after a car accident when I was 15. I woke up out of surgery and two weeks later I realized I had a bag. U never even heard of it. I was so scared. Your so brave. I'm over here crying thinking about how I felt. I eventually got used to it, but it was still hard. I got mine reversed after 6 months. Your amazing. And I love you.

I was good for about 10 years up until 2 years ago, I was in the hospital twice, my intestines were kinked I think, but they corrected themselves without surgery after about 5 days in the hospital. Thanks for sharing Genevieve. Car accident here also. Dr said to me, David, we've had you in a coma. You've broken your back in a couple of places. I said will I walk again? He said I should be OK. In and out of consciousness for a couple of days because of medication, I kept waking up during the night, feeling these weird things in my skin. They were 32 staples going up my middle. I wasn't told I had punctured my small and large intestine, and had to have colostomy surgery. Anyhooo, daunting and a bit scared to start with, got used to it after 6 months, I also had a reversal. I understand that you are trying to write a positive comment on we're trying to be positive. But actually these types of comments are what's called "negative good comments". Meaning even though you don't you try to have positive comment, it was actually very negative. How do you think the uploader feels when you say stuff like that? How do you think you make them feel when you say gosh you can't even imagine how you couldn't go through this? Epic representative again, I know you meant to be positive and was not intentional. It's like saying to somebody in a wheelchair with no legs and telling them "gosh you're so strong I don't know how I would ever live like that" ... how do you think your comment makes the person in the wheelchair feel? Your comment does more that'd been good, even though you were genuinely trying to make them feel better, so just some advice next time, if you're ever in that position and you think of something like that to say, it's better not to say anything then to say something like that.
Coolguy... when we live in a world with the Kardashians and their focus on plastic surgery, complete self focus, or a world full of materialism, then I wanted to remind people there are way more important lessons to learn. One being, those less fortunate for any number of reasons. Sorry you didn't get my message. I think the people who share their lives like this young lady, are heroes, and a wonderful example for the rest of us.

My step father changes his in the morning and of a night after his shower but he pre cuts all his bags (has one for urine and one for stool) so all he has to do is clean the area and apply the bag, he doesn’t need all the same stuff as this lovely lady so it doesn’t require so much preparation

I had to have an ostomy bag up until I was 7. I had mine to drain bile that wasn't flowing properly through my liver. They told my mom, that it could kill me to take the stoma off, but I lived. Then 3 days before my 9th birthday I had a liver transplant. I just want to know if her bowls are constantly going into her bag? My bile constantly flowed into my bag.

The Invisible Child the bullet hit my intestines and that’s why I needed a colostomy bag for six months. After they reversed it I almost died again cuz 2 months after surgery my intestines had kinked up and healed that way
I am an RN, and have had to change, and teach patients how to do their own colostomy care. This video was great! Your matter of fact attitude is encouraging that this doesn't have to be a devistating life change. You can live a normal lifestyle with just a few minor changes. Thank you so much for this informative video. I'm sure it will help hundreds of viewers who are having to deal with an ostomy for whatever reason.

It doesnt have to ruin life,but it is a full time job.especially if u are like me and have a short transit as ive had 5 resections and have barely any small bowel left.short transit and dumping syndrome make it a nightmare cuz u cant plan a time to check on it.u really have to watch what you eat.im a firm believer in stoma paste and blowdrying mine rather than using body heat.u can also use a cynoacrylate that makes the skin around your stoma hard as its what super glue is made of.its not bonding like sg but its purple and will really help those with excess skin create a solid base.i use the cyanoacrylate called "MARATHON" AND ITS.CHANGED MY LIFE .but blowdrying has also been just as vip as i am a squirter with my short bowel transit.so i can apply cavalon barrier,paste powder if im rashy or burned and applly it all fast and before i squirt where if im using a hand fan its a 30sec min wait for dryness vs 5seconds and a warm bonding.hope this helps anyone.
Just to clear the air i have no colon and have an ileostomy that is high om the chest ,almost at the brest level.so mine is naturally a harder thing to deal with as the acid is pure and potent.the smell is not as bad but my output is 99%liquid inspite of taking fiber,questran,fiber cookies,max lomotil anti diherriah medication so it.is what will kill me in the long term.i dont have enough intestine to asorb my electrolytes and will often get kidney failure,dehydration, cramping really bad,to the point i look like i have seized up.i wouldnt wish it on anyone,but im fighting till i die.......sorry for such a long post

I realized I never said thank you for this video. I watched this video about 2-3 years ago when I was diagnosed with bowel obstruction ( most likely Crohn's disease) and they told me I had a possibility of having a colostomy bag. I was about 11 and of course I was scared because I didn't want people to judge me. I posted a comment on here talking about how I was scared about it and I got a lot of comments that helped me calm down. The sweet comments and this video has really helped me and I really needed to give you a proper thank you. I don't what I would of done to myself if I didn't have this video. I really appreciate you!

I am very happy to see people encouraging each other. I bet this is a drastic change, so I applaud the fact that people are open about this. As a graduated nurse and studying for her license exam, thank you for all the feedback. Not only do I learn from the videos but also the comment sections. I have Crohn’s and I took care of my daughter’s temporary ileostomy 2 years ago for 3 months. I know that most of the supplies are bought directly from the suppliers but I think if they were also sold in pharmacies and if people saw commercials on tv for supplies along with someone explaining the reason for them it would allow everyone to become familiar with ostomies. Everyone should at least be aware of the procedure and why people need them. I am so grateful for all of the people making these tutorials for osteomates and their caregivers. Thank you!

It doesn't hurt to change the bag it just feels like you're pulling off like a band aid a little bit but that is what the adhesive remover is for. And it doesn't gross me out because it is just a normal bodily function.

Girl, let me tell you something: you're absolutely amazing!!! I'm a nursing student and I've dealt with a lot of people with stomas and most of them couldn't accept that new thing about them and were ashamed of it. The fact that you have the courage to share this with the world really amazes me because a lot people still don't know what's a stoma and what it actually means to the people who have them and it's important to talk about it and don't make it a taboo. When I worked with developementally disabled adults, I'd a client who required this type of medical care. He was non-verbal, so I thank you for allowing me to see/hear what he was dealing with. Btw, the folks who, in your comments, say it;s gross- every good mother has cleaned poop from their baby and not minded it at all (well, sometimes,) but it's all part of being human! Hi Laura, my mom will be 80 years of age soon, at the beginning of this year she needed to have an emergency ileostmy, and she was completely unable to tend to it by herself when she returned home, due to how sick she was, (and I was utterly clueless as well). We did get some information from the healthcare workers, but, as we were still in need of further demonstration, etc., I searched the internet and so fortunately came across some of your videos and found them to be very helpful. I just want to thank you so very very much, you have been a huge help to me in helping my mom, and now, little by little, as her health improves, and through watching your videos, she is beginning to be able to do some of her ileostomy care on her own.

I just want to say thank you. In a few days I will be operated on for a cancer and probably I'll have a ostomy. For a short period, if everything will be ok. But there's a chance of a permanent ostomy. Cause of a cancer of my mum I've never accepetd the idea of this (cause she not accepted that for the short period of her life after the operation). You are the most beautiful and bravest young person I have ever came across as a former teacher I was Diagnosed with Fibromyalgia lupus 20 years ago and I've been on Life support twice and has lived most of those years in ICU due to the medications and complications of the treatments I lost all of my hair eyebrows and lashes. I now started a non-profit support group to Encourage and Inspire people all over the world to never give up no matter what their Diagnosis are You would make a Great speaker for young people or just people because you are an Angel of Hope Thanks for sharing!!

Thank you so much for sharing and showing others how this works. I had stage 4 colorectal cancer five years ago and had to have the same ileostomy and it was very traumatic because no one knew how to instruct me on how to take care of one and change one out. I was basically sent home with a bit of equipment and figure it out on my own. There was only one ostomy nurse for a large area and she was in the process of retiring plus she just didn’t seem too well informed. Your bravery to show how to do this can help so many others through this process. I’m sure your mom is very proud of you. I had my ileostomy reversed after several months.

I use a 2 piece thankfully. Allows you to get a really good alignment on your stoma.
Seven years later...I just wanted to thank you for posting this video to help other people with ostomy bags, and those who don't know anything about them, to learn. You're positive and calm way was nice to see. It's not easy to post the challenges in our lives (most people just show the highlights), but it's so good to include people and show them that as we may have differences, we are all, essentially, the same. It does a world of good in dispelling ignorance and fear. It sounds corny, but it's true. Because I knew someone with cerebral palsy growing up, when I met someone or saw someone with the same or other differences, I felt comfortable to communicate with them as a person, just like any other person I'd meet. Thanks again for sharing part of your life!

This video resurfaced in my feed. I actually watched this video back in 2013 when I was first diagnosed with UC. I watched this to educate myself and relate to someone when I had no idea what the disease was. Thought this will probably be my life at some point but not anytime soon. Less than a year into diagnosis I had emergency surgery and had my own temp stoma. I was super confident with changing my bag because of this video. I honestly can't imagine how I would have handled such a lifestyle change without causally watching this beforehand. Thanks for informing stoma owners and curious viewers!

Hi I'm Simon and I used to do this , when I was nursing many years ago. I used soapy water, and a small disposable wipe , and clean around the stoma . All of this brings back memories, for me . People may think that this is sqwimish , but you are doing a great job in educating people . All the best . Simon X
And also when you clean around the stoma , you can use disposable gloves . So infection doesn't spread , and as especially if you have any pets around . Simon x

OMG I had to have a colostomy for nearly a year. For the 1st 6 months I was in the hospital and nurses changed it. When I was sent home, I was on my own! I just had to remember what they did in the hospital. I wish I had had this lesson! You are helping many people.

Hi, hope everything still going well for you, i had my ileostomy in 1979 when i was 28 years old (a lifetime ago) and i use a 2 piece system i could never get on with 1 piece also i have never sat down and done a bag change that just seamed a weird thing to do but i also find very cold water after i have cleaned up and before applying bag stops stoma working for awhile also as a male a bit hairy so need to shave, i preheat the backplate and ring having it between my thighs whilst doing all the prepwork but it only takes a few minutes to do, but thats 40 years of doing it and in 1979 (in the uk) you were seriously ill , had opp, discharged from hospital and basically left to your own devices, its great that their is so much information about now, anyhow stay safe and enjoy life

I'm 61 years old and just got a colostomy less than two weeks ago. Mine is so difficult to cut out because I have a huge open area surrounding my little stoma. I'm still pretty inept with cutting. Hopefully it will close so I have a stoma like yours. It would be certainly easier to cut, lol. I still have trouble with leaking as well. If I get through two days without one it's amazing! I have to say that you shared this teaching with so much grace and dignity. You are my new favorite person!

Good too hear from you! I am well and having more luck with my colostomy although as with any colostomy there is going to be issues. I'm told I'll never have a normal stoma it will always remain teensy but it works! Anyway, I'm hoping that you are well and thriving!

Hey, someone who’s just come into my life has a stoma, is there anything you’d recommend I keep in the house for when they come over? I’m not close with them but they’re close with someone else who often comes over to my house and I want it to be a safe, prepared space for them.

I just came across your TH-cam channel and I’m happy I did! I also have crohns and ulcerative colitis and had my entire colon removed and a little bit of my small intestine. I was 16 when I went through three surgeries and had a colostomy bag and a double stoma colostomy bag. My third surgery I actually got a reconnect luckily but just wanted to say you are way stronger then I was when I went through it all. Thank you for making videos about it all, it’s rare for me to actually hear someone who went through the same exact thing I did.

Hi! I had my colon removed and subsequent ileostomy surgery 3 1/2 years ago, after suffering with UC for 40 years. I use a 2-piece Hollister system. Over the years since my surgery I experimented with lots of different ways to change my skin barrier/flange and bag. For me, I've found that standing over the toilet is the cleanest and fastest way to change these devices. I prepare everything way in advance (cut the hole in the flange, get the bag sealed, and I apply the Hollister Karaya paste to the inside of the flange even before I remove the flange and bag). Many times, I will then get in the shower for a morning or evening shower. I keep a folded piece of toilet paper in the shower with me, and I cover my stoma before I leave the shower in case any stool comes out in that 5 second time span between leaving the shower and standing over the toilet. When I get out I dry my stoma area off and then apply the flange and bag. By doing it in the shower and then standing over the toilet, any stool that comes out either goes down the shower drain or into the toilet. I used to use wipes and powder, etc,, but I don't use those products any more: I find the flange sticks better with no other products. I normally am able to go abut 4-7 days between changes..The change itself takes less than 3 minutes after I exit the shower. If I need to change it and a shower is not a possibility, I still do it standing over the toilet for stool reasons, and the entire change from start to finish takes about 10 minutes..BTW, I bought a few sets of curved stainless steel scissors on ebay for cutting the whole in the flange.....they work wonders! Good luck to everyone who has gone through the operation or who is suffering and may be having this surgery in the future. I am a home improvement contractor and am very active and my ileostomy has not kept me from doing anything I want to do!
