    I guess we learned that some rattlers can upgrade and some can't. I think you got decent results overall. Thanks for doing it and sharing the results with us!

    Great exercise showcasing the rattlers. It shows that when you buy these you can be confident in the grade either being accurate or undergraded. Very rare to find a overgraded coin in a rattler although you do have to be careful to avoid PVC, over designated color on copper, and over designated PL and Dmpl coins

      @tylonnplatinumthe3rd659 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With copper it’s likely they turned in the holders and weren’t necessarily over graded but the results are the same

    Of the 15 or so PCGS rattlers I cracked out and sent back to PCGS, all but one (which came back the same grade) came back at least one grade higher with three coming back 2 grades higher. These were all commems, if it makes any difference.

    Hi, Ben. maybe it would be worth it if there is a big jump in price in the next grade. But then, they tend to grade harder when there is a big jump. I don't collect holders or labels. *TYU*

    3 rattlers had combined +3 numerical upgrades, small sample size, but I'd say yes! Even the toned Morgan that didn't upgrade, I'd pay closer to MS65 money for the attractive toning.

    I've had fairly Goodluck by buying Rattler's and OGH.. I was buying them right until it seems everyone seemed to raise the prices on their Rattler's & OGH. Then I started searching out OLD Anacs holders along with ANA Holder's. Seems like the word got about them also. You have to buy the coin right or won't gain any money if it upgrades.
    I had some real good Luck with 2 Anacs Walking Liberty halves. 2 of them did better than I would have never guessed they would. One went up to a 66+ from a 64, and the other went from a 64 to a 66. I almost had a accident in my pants. LOL. If you don't try this, you will never know. I have been somewhat successful

  • @zzyzxRDFwy15
    @zzyzxRDFwy15 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ben, I think you should send in a few mundane and ubiquitous coins for grading just for the fun of it and see what happens maybe then auction them off. Maybe even put a booger one of the coins and see if PCGS leaves it in place or rejects the coin. If the a coin grading company can regrade a coin and it goes up two points, it shows that the professional coin grading is nothing more than someone's opinion and subject to change the next day. What a racket...

    Why would you break a rattler at all? People buy coins in them for a premium. If you think that the coin would upgrade, why not just send it to CAC? Rattlers are already historically significant. On top of it all that St. Gaudens ended up with the same grade as the rattler. What's the point? Now you've lost money to get it re-graded, only to receive the same grade, and arguably from a TPGS that is considered slightly less desirable, and lost any potential premium for the rattler.

      @@okgroomer1966 obviously. That isn't the point. What *is* the point is, given a choice between two coins that are of the same grade and eye appeal, which one is more desirable? It's the one with a more historically significant slab, all other things being equal, because that's what the market has been showing for the past several years.

  • @upscalelures

    Value wise would it have been worth trying to get the rattlers CACed instead?

    • @tylonnplatinumthe3rd659
      @tylonnplatinumthe3rd659 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it would be a wash on the four coins but definitely make a few $ on the dime which probably had a 50/50 shot of going gold

    • @jaywindley
      @jaywindley 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it depends on the coin and the CAC. For example, that 1887 Morgan (according to Grey Sheet) is $123 w/o CAC and $144 with CAC at MS64. However if it happened to get a Gold CAC, then it would jump (I think) to $286. But at MS65 Grey Sheet says $240. So in this case, the regrade is worth more than a CAC (on paper) unless the CAC was gold. However, I think the NGC holder kills all of this speculation. The MS64 in PCGS OGH, especially with a CAC, is probably woth more than an NGC at MS65.

    These days i'd say rattlers always go for a premium. Basically standard to assume that a rattler would CAC or regrade a grade higher

    • @newbornma
      @newbornma 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If one would assume that a rattler would get a CAC sticker. Which one would be better to have: A rattler with a CAC sticker or, a grade point higher in a new holder? I guess it would depend on the date & if there is a big jump in price between the two grades.

  • @tylerrusin912
    @tylerrusin912 ปีที่แล้ว

    With the current market you would've been much better off sending those all to CAC

  • @okgroomer1966
    @okgroomer1966 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd find grading a much more valuable service if it was done closer to how ancients are done. Multiple scores without trying to nail down a specific 1-70 number with subjective standards. The current system has people chasing slabs and stickers, the coins are almost of secondary importance. A loved coin can become unwanted all over some putz and his opinions.

    Send the rattler holder coins to PCGS regrading is better than crack out.
    MS65 NGC new holder is less valuable than MS64 PCGS Rattler holder
