      Agreed. But it will take decades to replace French with our local languages. Must start the process NOW. In Singapore they have 4 official languages and everything works just fine over there

    Trains look nice but $1.3B for 40km of rail sounds awfully expensive for a poor country like Senegal. Here is the math. It is costing Senegal $32.5M per km vs. ~$20M per km to build High Speed Rail in China (HSR is much more expensive to build). China also built 414km rail in mountainous Laos for $6B or $14.5M per km, less than half of Senegal. They expect 100K commuter to the use the rail. Dakar has 1M population, so they expect 10% of Dakar population to use the train every day? Sounds awfully optimistic.

    • @xzybit1984
      @xzybit1984 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      No, Dakar has about 3.5 millions in population. I agree with you that the train is a bit expensive particularly when you compare it to Chinese costs but overall it's a positive move for Dakar. I think the work for the extension of the line has already started, so this is just a beginning. Hopefully they'll find way to lower the costs.

      You are absolutely right the cost is horrible. Most people won’t be able to afford this thing they will have to subsidise it somehow. I’m sure they are looking at oil revenues which have already been tainted with corruption British petroleum involved. I’m glad they done it because we do need infrastructure but I just don’t trust this government to manage it right. This is our time to invest in infrastructure and mainly manufacturing China wants to move away from that and concentrate on high tech we should be taking the slack but who knows…..

It was made to save the French company (Alston) who was about to go bankrupt until Macky Sall (French Citizen) gave them this gift. Senegalese are hungry, sick, and unemployed and in return you build them a train that only runs for 34 miles for $1.3 billion, what a great job! I am Senegalese and please do not be happy for us because these are the kind of projects that keeps us poor, broke, ignorant slaves to France. A project made by France, funded by a French bank, maintained and run by French company is clearly not meant to boost any other economy beside the French economy. We are hopelessly waiting for 2024 when Macky Sall, the French Citizen can peacefully leave our country and go retire in France just like the rest of the previous Senegalese presidents. Why do African nations buy expensive modern equipment instead of settling for older equipment i.e. not second hand and then try and manufacture it in Africa. Study carefully the successful Indian model of doing things. The world needs Africa to succed so we can create a bigger pie. The main thing is to get rid of corrupted politicians if Africa is going to succed.

    2020 Senegal's GDP per capita was 1,356 USD, a one-way train ticket costs 3 dollars, Meanwhile Germany's most expensive city Munich, GDP per capita 79,690 euros = 90,536 dollars, but a one-way train ticket costs 3.5 euros =3.98 dollars. Question is, in Senegal who can afford the train riding?

    The fare is 3 dollars, wow. This is excessively expensive for the Senegalese. Also, it seems like the construction costs were inflated. They are better off not having a commuter train. Forking over 1.3 billion dollars to France for a train that won't be used.
