I got a question and this is good, I was in a bump, the other person was in turning right lane but stopped level with kerb with nothing in front of her, and started to move slow on red and hit me as am going straight, who at fault ?
@4:08 let's say you want to turn right and there's no cars coming on your right. But on the left there's cars coming and going, since your signaling right (providing it's clear) is it okay to go into creep into the middle road to let drivers know you want to join their lane? Or do you stay at the giveway line until it's cleaar on both sides? Thanks!
Literally the best teacher ever man. My instructor says it looks like you know what you're doing when I actually don't.. not properly which resulted in me being stuck in the middle today doing my right turn. Well not anymore thanks to this genius!!! Life saver!

Passed the test first time today spent the last week watching all your videos and used so many methods of yours especially the 123 method so thank you very much :D
Good explanation, easy to understand I failed once because of the right turn. I have my test again next week and this video is right on time. Thank you.
Best of luck with your test tomorrow, take it one road at a time and email me at danetyghe@gmail.com if you have any questions or concerns about the test.
Thank you for your helpful videos, I been watching since I failed my fist time, I have my second attempt in 2 hours. Fingers crossed 🤞 I need to pass this time 😊
Wonderful lessons!! Very helpful. I love the pace and tone in the videos. Could you please indicate the page in the Rules of the Road book, about multiple cars being allowed to move into the junction and wait for the right turn? I heard some people saying that they were failed only because they followed the car-infront into the junction, creating a queue in the yellow box. What if a 3rd car does this as well (moving into center).
Dane, do you have a video, or can you make one, of the etiquette of driving down the one lane boreens, country roads, and hillside roads? When I was very young my uncles would drive us through those areas and it was quite hair raising. I never understood how there weren't car accidents all the time with the two-way traffic on a barely single lane road.
Stephen Williamson That's a plan I have for another video, thanks for the tip. I do touch on it slightly in this video, th-cam.com/video/VupiJdzXwqo/w-d-xo.html but when I make a specific video on that topic I'll let you know.
Got failed today for this even though I don’t believe I was cutting the corner. Didn’t know this would be a major. Hopefully will learn from this video for the next one.
Itsash oh dear, sorry to hear that. It's not necessarily a fail for cutting the corner as it depends on the situation and how the examiner judged it. A little bit of a Corner cut is no big deal but if you cut it a lot with another car nearby then that would be a much bigger problem.
Dane Tyghe yeah he said my positioning when turning right at the junction was way too far on the right however the left lane was to turn left so maybe it was because it was a confusing junction. Thanks for the video it’s great.
I had 3 minors and 1 serious. The serious was due to me going into the box and I carried out a right turn without giving way. Y next test day is actually today! So thought I'd brush up on what did wrong previously
Hello Dane, please could you make an explanatory video of when to move out of a major roundabout and also moving out from a minor to a major road, showing exactly where the cars with priority should be as at when you move out so as to avoid undue hesitations, Thanks . Please keep me posted.
Thanks for this video Dane. Can do some video on meeting traffic, planning and judgement Today I'm very sad. I cried as well coz I failed my test today on meeting traffic. 😡😢
Hello Dane Thanks for the great explanation. One question regarding keep clear. Should we consider keep clear box as yellow box while turning right? Thanks!
Hi, new subscriber here. I really find your tutorials very informative and helpful. I just have a couple of question. First is, on a green light for example, if the blue car rolled up to the center of the yellow box behind the red car which is allowed in general condition, is there a possibility that the blue car might get stuck in the middle? what will be the worse scenario and what should the blue car do if in case it happens? Second, if you can not commit to entering the yellow box, will u be marked if u decided to stay behind the first line and not roll up in the yellow box if there is already a car waiting to turn right? thank you.
It depends if the junction is big or small, bigger - 2 cars could roll up and if the 2nd car gets stuck he should not be faulted because the 1st car failed to clear the junction.
Hi Dane, hope you are doing great. I failed yesterday in Finglas Dublin test centre. I watched all your videos and i liked them too much. I need your help in discussing my mistakes from my test result, Could you help me with this ?
Hi, I have seen most of your videos and loved a lot as it helps a lot to learn diving, I had a question in mind, is it allowed to change gears while taking any kind of turn? Thanks
Hi Dane, thanks for making these amazing videos. I had one situation happened during my driving test last year (which I failed) - I was in the yellow box waiting for my turn to turn right. There was an incoming traffic and also an incoming van who also wanted to turn right so he was also in yellow box. Now when the gap appears for me, shall I take my turn first? Or who gets the right of way in this situation?
I got an answer in your another video "How to turn right..." So it seems both the cars will have right of way. In my case, I didn't take the right turn on driver's side of both vehicles, instead, I passed first but tester said I should have given him the way which don't make sense to me.
Thank you so much for the amazing videos I wanted to ask you that after we finish turning left or right, the steering automatically returns to it's original position like a recoil. Is it allowed to let it recoil on its own during the driving test?
Great video. I've got a question. At a yellow box, if I wanted turn right would I be obligate to enter the yellow box? What if I still wanted to run right, but waited at the stop line, is that allowed?
+Irene Lopez You should enter the yellow box as it will be a better position and shows more decisiveness. Staying back means that you have a greater distance to cover in order to complete your turn.
Box junctions are best source of income for councils so be careful not to stop in them. You will be fined even if a little bit of your front or back tyres are on the box junction and even if you are not blocking any traffic. The whole idea for the council is to have the slightest excuse to fine you the extortionate amount of £65. Be careful with box junctions and do not allow councils to rip you off by entering them unintentionally.
Hi, I have an upcoming driving test, this will be my third one 🤞🏻 a question in relation to turning right at a traffic light, in my previous test I was the first car in the que, moved to the middle of the box when the light went green, I saw there was a turning light. It was a busy road in Tralee, the light change to red, no turn light and I was now blocking traffic in the yellow box, FAIL! I was afraid to run the red light, but it’s ok if in the yellow box, to turn right on red?
Once you go into the middle you have to be alert and ready to go, you can't stay stranded as you will block the junction so yes it appears that you you should have proceeded just before it got to the stage where you blocked the junction.
Great videos dane. At a busy crossroads earlier in single lane traffic I was turing right on green with no filter arrow but I couldn't turn with the traffic coming towards me any advice. I got a few beeps
Well you can only turn if it's safe so if the person behind you can't control themselves that's their weakness that they have to live with. In this video I will explain about traffic lights - th-cam.com/video/IRCbYdC1R0Q/w-d-xo.html
Hi! Really good info, still have one question! What if you have moved to the yellow box and the light turns red without you finding an opportunity to turn right? I'm hiring a car in April to drive around UK, I'm from India, where no rule is followed! :P
Hi Dane, first of all thank you so much for such great lessons, your videos have been incredibly helpful! Now on to my comment/question, which relates to the previous comment about turning right from a box when lights go red: I recently was failed for doing exactly that. Busy road in Barnet, no space for me to turn, lights go red therefore oncoming cars stop and off I go. As I’m doing so, Inspector tells me I have gone through a red light, then tells me not to worry and keep focusing on the rest of the test (this being half way through the test) At the end he tells me that I haven’t pass just for that one fault! I helplessly argue I didn’t have space while green was on, and I chose to go through red light not to block the traffic coming across from the side. He then tells me the spot is designed for it and that I should’ve waited, I still can’t quite make sense of it which is frustrating, because I fear I might end up making the same mistake next time or, just be all confused and insecure when facing similar situation. Thanks in advance!!!
It depends on the situation, the rule I am explaining is a general rule which is applied in most situations. However all junctions are different and there may have been a safe area for you to wait, I'm not sure because I'm not familiar with that junction. Sorry to hear the bad news but I would advise you to talk to a locally based driving instructor about this issue.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Yes, that's exactly what I think must've happened. Possibly a filter light I missed somewhere. Thanks for the advise and keep the great videos coming!
Great video. One thing I'm still not sure about is that at 6:40. When the red car is in the yellow box, how should the red car position itself if the yellow car wants to make a right turn also? From the diagram the red car is blocking the road for the yellow car to turn right. In a real life context would the yellow car go around the back of the red car?
@@DaneTygheletsdrive thanks. Sometimes I wonder should i pass the car before I turn. So you're saying I shouldn't pass them? I suppose it depends on the situation
I'm not saying anything definite because the whole situation entirely depends on the drivers, the space and who is more advanced in terms of making progress. On a smaller junction one car might hold back slightly and allow the other to turn, on a bigger one both could turn together. Sometimes whoever gets there first or whoever shows more enthusiasm gets to go first.
What if you're turning left near the boxed junction and you have a give way there- no traffic light.. you must look and give way to traffic on your far right as well as cars making a right turn into your road already on the yellow box? I messed this turn up and the instructor had to brake for me as a car was already on the box and making a turn on to the road I wanted to turn in to! N I've driven in this part of my area so many times .. it's my understanding of the rules I never got properly.. any advice?
Dane thank you for an extremely helpful video. If I'm turning right and I need to slow down to, say, 10kmph to take the turn safely, is it ok to start in second gear and partially press the clutch until I'm around the turn (rather than drop to first gear to take the turn and then go back to second after the turn)?
It's OK but it might be a better idea to just drop to 1st gear or do it in 2nd, choose one option otherwise you might get done for coasting, it can depend on the tester.
When turning into a new road that has an obstruction, a parked car on your side of the road. Would you tell your students to always try to still turn into your own lane first, then move out because of the obstruction, or is it ok to directly turn into the other side of the road to show anticipation? What if there's a continuous white line in the center at the beginning of the road? Would this qualify as an exception because I want to avoid an obstruction ahead?
when you are moving off to the right .. do you move with the bite (if you have to stop turning right)and a bit of gas for a smooth speed until you are straight enough to off the clutch ... ?
+Elvst you should get the bite if you have used the handbrake as this helps you move off smoother and quicker. Always use the handbrake and feel the bite if stopped on a hill or stopped a long time.
Dane Tyghe thanks and i must say your videos are awesome. i have learnt a lot from your videos more than from from my instructor. happy to have found you. i’m halfway all your videos lol. thanks once again would you a video about one way road - what to look for and how to know u are on one way road. thanks
Hi Dane. I'm struggling with keeping the car in motion when attempting to undertake an open turn where the objective is to not to apply the brake. Do I coast through the turn and accelerate only when on the straight or can you accelerate whilst steering? I'm sorry if this is a silly question but I'm not getting it! I appreciate any reply. I'm driving an automatic car but the tiny but I'm stuck on is probably relevant in any car possibly. Even though Im learning in an automatic, I still enjoy your videos for roadsense and procedures. Thanks
I'm not sure I understand the question, firstly there's no rush on the junction, perhaps stop and creep forward to improve your view. You can't really coast in an automatic car but by just releasing the brake it will allow the car to edge forward
Hi thanks for your video but one quick question - what happens if there is no box junction and the light turns to amber and red while I'm still waiting to turn right?
Hi Dane, I have a quick question. I've encountered a few junctions that don't have a yellow box or a turning box for turning right. So in a situation without a box, can you still move forward into the middle of the junction if the light is green and you're first in the queue? or should you stay put and wait for the filter light ? Thank you🙂
Hi Dane, I completely understand right turns and how not to cut corners but what I’m struggling with is when I’m making a right turn into a side road and there’s a parked car near the corner. How do I know if I should drive behind that car and then move out or if I should drive into the middle of the road . Is there like a magic number of cars that a parked car has to be parked away from the corner for you to drive behind it
I have the same problem, I’m yet to come across anyone on TH-cam showing examples of right turns with parked cars on new road. Does anyone know when you can go in the middle when there a parked car. Most roads are full of parked cars
Elvst The situation you specifically highlighted at 7.40, where both cars can turn right, is normally only done at traffic lights because it's safer as traffic lights are a controlled junction. By that I mean the other roads to the left and right will have red lights. It is possible to do so at a regular crossroads but only if it is safe to do so as at a regular crossroads (no traffic lights) you must be aware of and give way to the main road. This video will help explain that in a bit more detail th-cam.com/video/8QCjxhnWNYU/w-d-xo.html
Hi! Do you carry on if the there is green light and red arrow light and you want to turn right? Some say to wait in the middle, some that you wait behind the line. What is the correct way? Thanks 😊
Hi Dane! Thanks again for this video. I can’t find the rules for the arrowed box turning right anywhere. Is it the same as the yellow box? My biggest issue is with the traffic light. Am I right to think that I can move to the box once the light is green (going straight) and I can turn right either 1 - gap in oncoming traffic 2 - green arrow come up 3 - light turn red (no gap during the period). What if the filter light (arrow to the right and previously not lighted up) goes red? I’d appreciate your help very much.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive this other video is very good indeed, thanks for sharing. My incident was in a very specific traffic light (GoogleMaps Cookstown Luas, Tallaght), there was a green arrow to move straight, so I moved into the turning box, but now it seems that I can only move into the box once it’s a full green light, thanks for clarifying.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive I thought this day would never come but I finally passed the test! Thank you very very much. Your videos were fundamental in my journey.
I live in The United States of America where we drive on the right side of the road. If there are two left turn lanes & I am on the outside left turn lane, shall my vehicle be to the left of the lane or in the center?

Great videos dane. At a busy crossroads earlier in single lane traffic I was turing right on green with no filter arrow but I couldn't turn with the traffic coming towards me any advice. I got a few beeps
Well you can only turn if it's safe so if the person behind you can't control themselves that's their weakness that they have to live with.
In this video I will explain about traffic lights -

@@DaneTygheletsdrive cheers dane keep up the great videos.
I'll try, thank you
Hi! Really good info, still have one question! What if you have moved to the yellow box and the light turns red without you finding an opportunity to turn right? I'm hiring a car in April to drive around UK, I'm from India, where no rule is followed! :P
You must go, you can't stay in the middle after light goes red
Hi Dane, first of all thank you so much for such great lessons, your videos have been incredibly helpful!
Now on to my comment/question, which relates to the previous comment about turning right from a box when lights go red:
I recently was failed for doing exactly that. Busy road in Barnet, no space for me to turn, lights go red therefore oncoming cars stop and off I go. As I’m doing so, Inspector tells me I have gone through a red light, then tells me not to worry and keep focusing on the rest of the test (this being half way through the test)
At the end he tells me that I haven’t pass just for that one fault! I helplessly argue I didn’t have space while green was on, and I chose to go through red light not to block the traffic coming across from the side. He then tells me the spot is designed for it and that I should’ve waited,
I still can’t quite make sense of it which is frustrating, because I fear I might end up making the same mistake next time or, just be all confused and insecure when facing similar situation.
Thank you and best wishes
Great video. One thing I'm still not sure about is that at 6:40. When the red car is in the yellow box, how should the red car position itself if the yellow car wants to make a right turn also? From the diagram the red car is blocking the road for the yellow car to turn right. In a real life context would the yellow car go around the back of the red car?
Normally they'd pass passanger side to passanger side, both could turn together. Generally it works itself out grand.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Thank you, I asked my instructor today and he said the same thing
Great minds think alike, best wishes and stay safe.
Thanks for this video
What if you're turning left near the boxed junction and you have a give way there- no traffic light.. you must look and give way to traffic on your far right as well as cars making a right turn into your road already on the yellow box?
I messed this turn up and the instructor had to brake for me as a car was already on the box and making a turn on to the road I wanted to turn in to! N I've driven in this part of my area so many times .. it's my understanding of the rules I never got properly.. any advice?
Very good 👍
Thanks
Dane thank you for an extremely helpful video.
If I'm turning right and I need to slow down to, say, 10kmph to take the turn safely, is it ok to start in second gear and partially press the clutch until I'm around the turn (rather than drop to first gear to take the turn and then go back to second after the turn)?
It's OK but it might be a better idea to just drop to 1st gear or do it in 2nd, choose one option otherwise you might get done for coasting, it can depend on the tester.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive ah, I see. I'll avoid it; don't want to risk coasting. Thank you.
Good luck
It's really helpful 👍

When turning into a new road that has an obstruction, a parked car on your side of the road. Would you tell your students to always try to still turn into your own lane first, then move out because of the obstruction, or is it ok to directly turn into the other side of the road to show anticipation? What if there's a continuous white line in the center at the beginning of the road? Would this qualify as an exception because I want to avoid an obstruction ahead?
Depends on the situation but it should be OK to turn in if its safe and wait, its OK to cross the white line.
when you are moving off to the right .. do you move with the bite (if you have to stop turning right)and a bit of gas for a smooth speed until you are straight enough to off the clutch ... ?
+Elvst you should get the bite if you have used the handbrake as this helps you move off smoother and quicker. Always use the handbrake and feel the bite if stopped on a hill or stopped a long time.
Dane Tyghe thanks and i must say your videos are awesome. i have learnt a lot from your videos more than from from my instructor. happy to have found you. i’m halfway all your videos lol. thanks once again
would you a video about one way road - what to look for and how to know u are on one way road. thanks
+Elvst Thanks very much for your kind words, that's a good idea for a video, it's something I could do in future.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Thanks for replying - I think its just a case of practice makes perfect, or at least "better".!
Indeed, one step at a time 👍
Hi thanks for your video but one quick question - what happens if there is no box junction and the light turns to amber and red while I'm still waiting to turn right?
You do exactly the same as you would if there was a box, you can't stay stranded in the middle of the junction, box or no box
Hi Dane, I have a quick question. I've encountered a few junctions that don't have a yellow box or a turning box for turning right. So in a situation without a box, can you still move forward into the middle of the junction if the light is green and you're first in the queue? or should you stay put and wait for the filter light ? Thank you🙂
Move up to the middle on full green light
Thank u, its very useful
+Bhuvaneswari T you're welcome
Thanks for the vid. Just wondering if there is such a box anywhere in Wexford town. I live in the country and I do not drive much in town...
Gisela Kolossa not really in Wexford town but the Crossroads by the hospital would be the closest.
Dane Tyghe thanks
Helpfull lesson
+Shahlda Dilawar thank you
Hi Dane, I completely understand right turns and how not to cut corners but what I’m struggling with is when I’m making a right turn into a side road and there’s a parked car near the corner. How do I know if I should drive behind that car and then move out or if I should drive into the middle of the road .
Is there like a magic number of cars that a parked car has to be parked away from the corner for you to drive behind it
It'll entirely depend on how close the parked car is to the corner
I have the same problem, I’m yet to come across anyone on TH-cam showing examples of right turns with parked cars on new road. Does anyone know when you can go in the middle when there a parked car. Most roads are full of parked cars
Normally be central to avoid the car, especially if its parked close to the corner
a question @7:40 does it applies to any junction turning right( two cars can wait to turn right)
Elvst The situation you specifically highlighted at 7.40, where both cars can turn right, is normally only done at traffic lights because it's safer as traffic lights are a controlled junction.
Thanks 😊
Depends on the light, some lights are filter arrow shape.
Very helpful, thank you
You're welcome, best wishes and good luck with your driving
If there is a road marking box for one car when turning right on a filter, would it only be one car can move up? Thanks😊
Usually just the one car
Treat it the same as yellow box, I have already explained this rule in many of my traffic lights videos
th-cam.com/video/IRCbYdC1R0Q/w-d-xo.html
@@DaneTygheletsdrive this other video is very good indeed, thanks for sharing. My incident was in a very specific traffic light (GoogleMaps Cookstown Luas, Tallaght), there was a green arrow to move straight, so I moved into the turning box, but now it seems that I can only move into the box once it’s a full green light, thanks for clarifying.
Yes that's right, if the filter arrow is on you can only go in that direction. A full green light gives you more options.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive I thought this day would never come but I finally passed the test! Thank you very very much. Your videos were fundamental in my journey.
That's great news, congratulations on your successful achievement 🎊
I live in The United States of America where we drive on the right side of the road. If there are two left turn lanes & I am on the outside left turn lane, shall my vehicle be to the left of the lane or in the center?
That may depend on your destination, watch out for signs and markings that will guide you.
How do I get a copy of that book you have? It looks good for learning about road navigation.
It's more of a teaching aid to be honest but driver education supplies Dublin is where I purchased it
Sir when I take right turn do I have to check center and right mirror or have to check left mirror as well? Thanks
All 3 is OK but centre and right are the main mirrors for a right turn
