Appreciated Joy’s description at the start regarding the “soft underbelly arbitrated by the collective”, to which Joy connected because it met a need for purpose within herself. A beautiful description, an instructive warning for all of us to be careful of the spiritual currents we flow within. Thank you for your always clarifying questions, Karen.
33:44 unfortunately, I have experienced that in my life…that internalized anger made manifest in poor health and a lack of care for self. I’m thankful to the Lord for making it thru, but it’s hard.
Powerful convo! We love you, Joy! Are you close to your siblings? I would like to see another talk with a sibling to see your journey and transformation from the view of loved ones, no pressure. 🤗
Joy’s perspective is so essential. How do we lead others, guide others, help others out of their depths? This is a question I continuously grapple with.
Where we have fallen and gotten back up again. We show them. We show them that there's a future. Social Media distortion compels us to constantly be showing off our wins and successes. But by sharing our failures we can help others realize that they are not beyond recovery either.
10:00 I think I know what she means by that…like a value of sensitivity and forcing yourself to “feel your way” into the experiences of others. There is certainly a lack of caution when it comes to the use of empathy (…potential consequences of projection, misrepresentation, and misunderstanding)
18:30 - On the topic of self-centricity; you could say we've gone from a vision of Jacob's ladder to Jake's revolutionary roundabout. With apologies to people named Jake 😅
I am on a bit of a crusade against empathy. All the data I've seen suggests it's a myth and this myth is inhibiting connection and relationship, and worse.
@@lkae4 Interesting. Sources ? My dictionary says: “the ability to understand and share another person’s feelings and emotions. Sharing & responding to their experiences.” “Helps build strong relationships.” This is bad in your estimation?
@@lkae4 For sure. We are obviously not islands though, are we ? It is through our interactions with others that we even know that we exist Right? Seems to me, like everything else, understanding ourselves and others requires finding a balanced perspective. The inner & the outer. Who am I, who are you?
1:00:00 "... redeems these past experiences and integrates them into the story of becoming" reminds me of Joseph's line "(the others) meant this for evil, but God meant it for good."
I loved getting to hear more of your story Joy. Perhaps I didn’t listen closely enough, but if I missed it is there a spot in the conversation where you talked about what event or set of events began a transformation for you into a different mindset? When/what moment(s) did you begin to view things in a different state of mind beyond the ‘progress’/intersectional/oppressed v oppressor mentality?
@@GrimGriz thanks. That’s definitely it - I’m not an attentive listener. I think I was curious about what led Joy into this space where the figure of Nick could manifest. How/why did she end up there? Relistening to the timestamp you linked helps me read between the lines.

35:50 That is absolutely fascinating. The image on the phone is a completely different person.
Thank you for sharing your story Joy, and for hosting, Karen. 🙏
Very excited to watch this. Joy is always so beautifully articulate.

15:00 Truth. Whatever has the capacity to transform history. Like Jesus of Nazareth ?

10:20 Empathy as a virtue is core. I hope you didn’t give that up. Continuing to listen to.
