Great video on compressors! Now I have a much better understanding of their purpose and where they fit in the signal chain. This was a very helpful video!
Compressors should be considered “core” components of a signal chain. Put it before (pre-stage) your OD pedals. I agree with putting at after fuzz though because it adds clarity. EVH used a small amount of compression in the post signal chain to enhance the dynamics of the power amp stage more. He was a known tone chaser. Add a parametric EQ to provide a small boost to make the mids cut through the mix without sacrificing tone.
Excellent video, great performance and informative! I have three great compressors to recommend to any guitarist: 1- Wampler Ego ( Full & mini) 2- Andy Wood Woodshed by Suhr 3- Strymon Compadre ( specially the Studio compression side)
Nice lesson, Buddy. What I like about compressors is that the taming of the peaks/transients allows one to hit transformers and tubes with a fatter signal and get richer harmonics even when playing clean.
My dude my favorite TH-camr great video I have a pedal board rebuild going on I currently have a fuzz benson germanium fuzz, tuner, overdrive, dd3 boss delay. I need to add another fuzz, chorus,I want to add a univibe nothing expensive for the vibe, and I'd like to add a phaser, and reverb pedal. I can fit 10 pedals total. I use a peavey 20w tube amp tweed style with built-in XLR out.
@@mccauley6027 I always go before drive but I haven't really tried before fuzz. Right now I go fuzz into treble Booster into my vibe. I will play around with it
Nobody ever talks about the high pitched picking noises being controlled by a compressor. Within 4 minutes of this video I’ve understood more about what they do more than I ever knew. You always hear “it just squeezes the signal and cuts the highs and lows” but you don’t hear about it controlling the nuances.
Amazing way to explain it Buddy! Excellent video and great performance! Do you still have and use the Wampler Ego Compressor with the JHS Morning Glory in your main pedalboard? Thanks 🙏🏻
Thanks for your reply Buddy! By the way, you should check the new Wampler Cory Wong Compressor based on the Ego. It sounds fantastic, it has a great boost and so many cool features. It’s a no brainer! Definitely it will be awesome to hear you make a review video in your TH-cam channel of this Compressor new pedal. 🙏🏻
I spent so much time thinking and rethinking my signal path before i made the move from DAW to physical pedals that I doubt myself at every turn. I feel somewhat vindicated by your videos so many many thanks. Question: I currently have a signal path of GTR>mini germanium fuzz face > mini Ego > Tumnus deluxe>Lehle mono volume (0dB) which I run low on the GTR volume pot. I want more sustain at lower settings so I feel that a Proco Rat would sit well between the EGO and the Tumnus. My amp is UAFX Ruby into Logic. Comments?
I wouldn't necessarily say I dislike compressor pedals. They definitely come in handy for keeping the attack time the same on funky type stuff. Just not something most players need to have. If I had to minimize a pedalboard it would probably be the first thing to go.
An overdrive can make a poor player sound average. A compressor pedal won’t. A compressor pedal allows an accomplished player to play more freely. This is why I own seven overdrives and no compressors.

Thank you for your time Mr. Blues. Very helpful to me!

Excellent video. Very informative and fun to watch.
Wow love your sound. Thanks I will watch this like a thousand times 😂
Loving this series! This was the best compressor overview I've seen. I wish this existed 20 years ago when I was trying to figure it out!
excellent video, congratzz
Thanks for this excellent video
You’re welcome thank you for watching!

Please how to Univibe next!🙏 I find myself having trouble dialing it in sometimes
Yes! Especially with fuzz. It comes out like a phasor sometimes
@@anejo333 that’s because it wants to be in front of drive and fuzz. Issue with that though is it sometimes affects how your fuzz feels

I like my wah before, it helps to make it usable in the full range ;)
Nice content and nice playing as usual: thx!

I have a Strymon Compadre that I never use, because of the noise that is amplified. Maybe I'll give it a shot again.
That compressor is great!
I have it. Use the studio one which is very subtle and check the dry button to always control your natural guitar signal…
Very useful video, thank you.

I still have the EGO on my main board but I've replaced the morning glory with the Apollo Approved Skyscraper

I used to feel like compression was cheating or made me less of a dynamic player but I really never tried to lower the amount.

Philosophers tone, under 200. But good, has a blend.
How I'm used to go with compressors. Turn it on.
😂 turn it on leave it on forever

Trick question. Don't use a compressor.
