    This is more like a beginner's video to a miniature Formal Upright style bonsai (well, more like a pre-bonsai) that I created; using this Chinese Juniper seedling. This video was done in June 2011, I have posted an update in June 2012, check it out.

    I am so glad that you decided to delete the derogatory and offensive responses. You took your time to create and produce this video that i am sure many of us entering the fantastic hobby of Bonsai will appreciate. THANK YOU for the inspiration. I live in the tropics Caribbean so I may need to find plants that are indiginous to this region. You have inspired me.

    For 40 years, yes. It would be a better idea, however, to comment on the actual subject of this post. I liked this mini-lesson. As a beginner, one of the things I often feel hard to grasp is how to envision the maturing or grown tree when your starter material looks almost like an unruly weed! (I'm not criticizing the author's choice of material.) He provides a good start for beginners like me, demonstrating the typical branch and foliage arrangement for a formal or informal style tree.

    Your videos are perfect. They relax me as they are instructional. The tempo is pleasing, voice calm, and clear. And what you do so easily is not so easily done by most beginners--trust me, I know. I am very impressed!

    I add a few drops of dish detergent to a gallon of water prior to watering dry soils. It breaks the "surface tension" and allows the water to fully wet the soil. It has NEVER bothered my tree's or plants. Also, I think the yellow pot which you selected was the best pot for your tree, the blue's made the tree too dark & gloomy.

    Hey commenting folks, I am enjoying this, and if we do, then let us.....no one is perfect yet....lol. You can teach someone what you know and not what you do not know.....but share what you do know - then we will all learn more.......be appreciate of folks willing to share and open themselves up to unappreciative folks. I am new at this and I need beginner's language.....so, if you want more, keep searching....:)

    I love your videos man. We see bonsai very similarly. You like to let the tree decided primarily what it is going to look like. That is also how I grow my bonsai. Now I have nothing against wiring, but when I see a more wier than tree it turns me off, anyway great little tree, I would keep it close to that size it it were mine it has a nice look. Looking forward to your next project, maybe a maple hint hint ;-) God bless.

    When re-potting and first watering you can poke some holes into the soil with a chop stick or similar to help water absorb and prevent pockets.

    I want to start Bonsai with already grown trees from 15cm to 30cm and then start from seeds. Perhaps I'll plant some seeds at the same moment I buy already grown plants! :)
    So far what I've seen is cutting some branches and apparently every certain time cut the roots a little bit.

    I am wondering how this tree has done with this choice of soil. The difficulty of getting water into the pot makes me wonder about another important aspect of soil, aeration. The water draining quickly through the soil draws fresh air into the soil.

    Just found your video and really like it. I want to start raising a bonsai, but I don't know which kind of tree to pick. I life in central Germany and I just have a balkony that's facing to the East. So there is quite lots of direct sun in the morning, but only shade later. I may also need to take it indoors during winter. Which kind of tree can you recommend ?

  • @davidsalomongp
    @davidsalomongp 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't get it...
    Bonsai is to only be cutting the tree to keep it small, and it'll get the shape and appearance of a full-grown tree?
    What about the leaf size and all of that?
    I've been searching a lot and I'm just noticing out it's a lot about cutting.
    I thought I had to do something with the roots...
    Where can I read/see about this?

    Greetings from Quebec. Thanks for your videos!
    I have recently purchased my first bonsai tree (a 4 inch Juniper) and have been keeping it outside. However, winter is on it's way and temperatures will drop to -35. From what I read online, I want to keep my juniper outside. I was thinking of burying the pot in the ground, up to the trunk and covering the base of it with mulch and giving it cover from the wind, and covering it with snow. Or, should the tree be inside with some sort of grow light?

    Is it possible to create a bonsai tree from any plant with a root, by simply pruning it and restraining it's growth with wires?

    • @ericbrown4761
      @ericbrown4761 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      don't restrain it's growth. prune growth back to shape. wiring doesn't restrict growth, it allows you to manipulate the direction in which the growth goes.

    How to bonsai a banyan tree at home.....?

  • @casimsalabim
    @casimsalabim 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't understand why you cut off the lowest of the branches at this state of a developing bonsai. It would have thikened the bottom of the trunk, thus creating a better taper.
    Maybe another tip could be not to fill the pot completly with soil. Water would have some time to sink into the soil instead of flowing off the sides.

    Can someone please help me? I bought a juniper from a bonsai store about 2 weeks ago. I live in new england so we get some cold nights here and i don't think he let the plant go to winter dormancy. I'ts getting warmer now and im not sure what to do with it. Should i just keep watering and fertilizing or see if it gets cold??

    • @ericbrown4761
      @ericbrown4761 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      it will be fine if it doesn't go into dormancy for a year. I wouldn't push it this growing season and make sure it sleeps in the fall. move it to the north side of your house or whatever the case may be, to reduce light level and watch the water. My junipers seem to be quite thirsty even in the winter surprisingly, so they get watered twice a week during dry spells. They aren't as finicky as some would have you to believe. They're more forgiving than you may think. Good luck.

    • @perfectperson214
      @perfectperson214 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not for anything this small, also in Cali or anywhere in the southwest a large particle soil can dry out completely in an hour or two sometimes in summer. So the fine soil is necessary for retaining water.
