Thank you for all the support on the last video!
In todays video I start working on my newly acquired 1973 Toyota Hilux. I just purchased this truck and am super excited to get it running and back on the road for the first time in 20 years! Absolutely crazy that this 50 year old truck only took a day of work to get it back on the road! If you want to see more Toyota content Like Subscribe, and follow me on social media @ redline.ranch on instagram.
Where would YOU roadtrip this sweet truck? Let us know!
Maybe to Reno, NV for Hot August Nights! Even if you drive up and down the strip! It's always a fun time to see all types of vintage vehicles; pristine or not... doesn't matter. :)
To my house: in south Texas :-)
Somewhere at least 200 miles away from where your at now. A 400 mile road trip would be good to break her in , lol
Drive it to North Central Florida, I'd might buy it from you
It would by my daily driver. I’d wax and buff it
That is an absolutely gorgeous little truck man! Whatever your plans are for it, I'm just glad you went out of your way to bring this beauty back on the road!
I plan to get it back operational then make it a good driver and hopefully take it for a roadtrip this spring!
I like this guy. Just seems like a good, kind hearted, and hard working man. Keep moving big guy! looking forward to seeing this Hilux restored to glory.
I appreciate that! All the support and feedback make doing it so much easier and more enjoyable!
I would be proud to use that truck for a daily driver
As will I
Love it. Your truck reminds me so much of my 74 HiLux. Make me miss it. The sound of the doors, hood and engine running really brings it home. The old girl has had a hard life, and it would be good to see ya restore it to as close to factory as possible. I think the Corona or Corolla from that same period uses many of the same parts. It may help you source what ya need. Anyhow keep it up love these small trucks
I have a Corolla and Corona from similar years so that’s good to know! I want to get it cleaned up really good and make it look like it’s new again
Nice work! It’s such a satisfying feeling to have working lights, having revived many of beater Toyota….it’s the small things.
It really is! The creature comforts and small things make all the difference!
You are a master mechanic and a jack of all trades man
Thanks! I appreciate that, try to be good at what I do
Great work restoring this truck I especially admired your wiring skills, you have good deduction skill & resourcefulness. ROCK ON😊
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoy watching!
Makes me miss the 74 I had back in the day and it too was the same color but mine was a 4 speed.
My 76 fiberglass body camper is a four-speed but I don't think a 5-speed would help it LOL but it is a chugger 2.0 actually it's a 2.2 but you know how they are
That one white wire under the dash on it's either the headlight switch plug or the ignition switch plug is a ground
A manual would help the truck a lot!
@@redlineranch. I had the on my trouble spots. The Jack Black didn't do as much damage as it looked like most of it was bad connections
Wow I can't wait to see the rebuilding process and much love from kenya 🇰🇪
Hizi Hilux ni nyingi sana huku home. 🇰🇪
Awesome to see people from so far away!
You have a naturally engaging style and know your stuff... looking forward to more in the future.
Thanks! I try hard to keep it interesting!
Awesome ignition location. Nice and hidden :)
Thanks, I tried!
What an awesome little thing! Glad to see it coming back to life. It could use some fancy detailing now. Maybe some detailing TH-cam channels would do a collar on this? It deserves to get that shine back.
That would be cool
There is nothing more enjoyable than fixing problems on your vehicle yourself mate well done for your perseverance with those grounding issues and I love your way of thinking on how to get around parts that are not easy to find 😊 can't believe how solid she is and it's so cool that you rescued she and got her back on the road
I think the timing might be a bit out and she's running a bit rich but hay she looking good 👍
Thank you so much for the support, I'm grateful for the opportunity to work on these awesome old vehicles! I still need to get a few odd and ends done on this thing to get it where it needs to be, timing, maybe a carburetor adjustment too, I live at 7,000ft in elevation, so that might be why its running rich right now.
It's an old engine, so time it with a vacuum gauge,
If you can get it up to 17 - 18 on the gauge, it should run pretty well.
And clean all the earth points while you try fixing the lights.@@redlineranch.
Ooops. You beat me to it!
Dude! So entertaining for Toyota heads! Thanks!
88-pickup
89-4x4
08-xB
10-xB-automatic
👍🏽
Glad you enjoyed! That’s quite the lineup!
More old car should be put back on the road
I’ll get as many as I can back up and going!
Nice job and recording style. I am glad I came across your videos. I wish you continued success with your projects and channel. Nice work.
Thanks so much! It’s a lot of work and I’m glad people are enjoying it!
Love to see what you end up doing with it moving forward. Appreciate the format you film in too. Cheers!
More to come! I appreciate the support and feedback!
I love this little truck, you did a great job bringing it back.
Glad you like it, I'm excited to see hoe it does on the road with all the improvements!
Had one just like it. A 76.
Repainted it and put flames on it.
Rough ridding tho.and coulda used a 5 speed.
I think a manual wold help this truck a ton
A full restoration of this would be so cool to watch but I kinda like it as is just fixed up cool little truck
I want to fix it up, but don’t know about a full restoration
@@redlineranch. IF you were going to keep it I'd try to find another trans for backup & try to locate someone with experience that has rebuilt them
Great job especially on the learning curve. My first resurrection was a 25 yr. old '39 Chevy. At the very end of the video, I did not notice any glow from the registration markers, perhaps they're still covered in exhaust. Narragansett Bay
Very cool! There is no tag light on the truck right now I’m looking to source one
awesome truck i am looking forward to next video on it
Coming soon!
LOVE how those 18RC engines PURR !!
Me too! They are stout little engines
Good work mate. Rob.
Thanks!
this is my new favourite channel! keep it up man!
Thanks! Will do! I’m glad you’re enjoying the content!
I want an old Hilux or Ford Courier. I do have a 93 Toyota Pickup, but I love this body style.
A shame someone butchered all the wiring when the grounds started failing. I've seen it before though.
It’s definitely unfortunate
That thing is like gold , love it .
I agree!
I'm digging these video's a sugestion after owning a mini truck that I wish I did was put some of the new interior sound deadening material in it, remember how loud it was inside and could never hear my stereo. Oh and in one of my $500 vehicles in the 80's I put in a hidden kill switch (should say under the hood battery kill not to drain battery and prevent your truck being stolen).
That’s a really good idea! Especially in the big cities
License plate light too? Some people don't like burned out license plate lights
There is no bulb or housing there, I’ll need to buy a whole light
On the Hi Lux lights, line all of the reflective sockets with foil A/C tape to make them Brighter! And wash all the lenses and spray them with plastic lense treatment.😊
Also Holley seals LED hi n lo beam bulb the look just like Sealed Beam bulbs. Way brighter for country roads!!
Good advice! I’ll look into that
qwned one in 77 starting a painting business out of a hilux for years had a canvas canopy in the bed and wife and i drove to maine from southern california a fine little truck
They don’t make them like they used to!
Handsome masculine compact pickup truck..🎉
Sure is
What a beautiful truck man.. I want to see this truck modified man. It will be cool
You and me both! Not sure what I want to do yet
Thank you! It gives me hope in my project to restore my 1999 Toyota HiAce!
You can do it! I know how valuable motivation can be and I’m so grateful to be able to share that with you!
@@redlineranch. Indeed! Restoring is creation of something material and longer lasting lasting! Thanks again to you!
I noticed a lot of my connections like on the solenoid we're just green and more than making connections same with the headlights no connection until you wiggle it
And yes the grounds need to be there good
Yeah, the corrosion definitely took its toll!
i give you props my dude..
Thank you! I appreciate the support!
These days, the Hilux would be considered a weird small car if built as is.
It is for sure a quite small truck!
I'd love to own that truck!
It’s a sweet ride!
@@redlineranch. I remember when these trucks were new, I wanted one very much but couldn't afford to pay attention...
Yea! Great job! Road trip needs a camper or popup trailer! Waiting for the adventure! Summer is coming, maybe Michigan lakes? I'm afraid the Upper Peninsula mosquitos might fly away with that truck!
Is love to take it that far, not sure how it would like the modern speed limits and highways!
Cool project. I’m doing a 1985 Ram 50 (L200) 4wd. So basic to work on.
Very cool!
Some centre-caps magically appeared on three of the wheels since the last video. Did they come with the truck?
They did! But only three :/
Those were excellent trucks
I agree
Bro it need some adjustment advance
It’s getting more work soon
Very nice job , a buff job would do that thing wonders. I would take that bad boy on a fishing trip .
You and me both, I look forward to getting it buffed out and taking it into the woods to camp and hang out!
Get it some love be better than the new ones lot less electric junck
They were so much simpler!
Another Hilux brought back to life maybe door cards and the roof lining done my 1997 Toyota Hilux was running and registered when l bought it in Newcastle N.S.W Australia and l drove the Hilux home and drove it to work on the Monday and discovered a wiring issue on the number plate light because it wasn't a part of the Toyota l have an aluminium tray and tge number plate bracket was fitted by the company who fitted the tray and it was the wordt job l have done on the Hilux and now my number plate light is an LED but all the work l have done on it has kept me busy just replacing a couple of 27 year old bits and making sure it passes its yearly registration inspection
Awesome man
Thanks for the visit!
Hey you got a good van just need some work
Where are you located? Send me an email

Do you think you can change the front drums for disc brakes using Pickup parts??
I’m reading about that and trying to see if anyone has done it before
24:08 - Uff Da! Do you have Scandinavian roots?
Awesomeness. Subbed
Thanks for the sub!
Cool colour and worth big pounds in England that is
It’s a pretty valuable truck!
Uffda? Are you by any chance Norwegian (family)? Awesome truck, and great work on this!
Not that I know of but possible! Also thanks for the support!
@@redlineranch. you’re welcome! By the way; «uffda» is the Norwegian word/term for «oh, dear» or «too bad»😊
The air filter looks hideously clogged.
It could definitely use a new filter
@@redlineranch. It's reusable. Wash it, and re oil it
Nice little truck surprised that it's an automatic.
Me too!
is it better to change the front brakes to disc brakes no?
Probably, I’m looking into parts for that!
Where in New Mexico are you? I’m near Bernalillo.
Central NM
No way that truck would survive Pennsylvania or the rust belt northeast. Which makes me sad as that’s why I’ll never see old cars much like this in my neck of the woods.
2 becomes 4-8 six functions
Swap the new tundra twin turbo 3.5 n wheelies all day.
If money wasn't a factor that would be amazing!
My grandfather put 600k miles on his.
That’s wild! I’m sure it saw some awesome adventures!
Hi Nicholas How are you?
Start with your self
Huh?
YOU TALK TOO MUCH ..
On my channel? Too bad
were would be the best place to get the part and stuff like that for a old model truck because i got one just dont know were to look
Forums and Facebook groups have been the best source for me
That little Frankenstein truck is gonna live another 50 years giving you a lot of joy and asking for almost nothing. Congrats!!!!
You got that right!
How about the differential oil?
What different oil?
NIce work, but you should replace that air filter, it looks well & truly cooked and the engine is blowing black smoke, so it’s running rich and that air filter is most likely part of the cause
That’s a good idea, it’s also about 7000’ in elevation which I don’t think it’s tuned for
How many months of work does this 30 minute represent? I noticed you went from Summer to Winter.
He's in New Mexico, it can do that in a weekend.
This was all in about 2 weeks, the weather moves fast around here
Better to put on disk brake in front
I’m looking in to that!
Hey, nice truck. Would you be interested in selling this truck. I'd love to have it. I've been a huge Toyota guy most of my life. Let me know if you're interested in selling it
No, sorry, thank you very much though!
That’s a great little Ute,if we have a nuclear war the only things still going will be cockroaches and Toyota Hilux.
I agree! Impossible to kill
I would just restore it get it runnin nice. Maybe 20 years back be about the engine swap. But its a classic'
I can see both sides of that debate, the original engine is cool and all, but makes it a bit of a drag to drive.
Please don't shine up the paint! Truck has a great weathered look to it, real rough and meaning business is a great look for an old work horse
Noted!
I have got to find the repair manual for you
that would probably help a ton!
cool ride. Would you stop talking much and comment while you're working only? that would be great.
🐶🐶
Ya well buy kit or just replace what is needed
It's Always the Ground!!!
New subscriber. Absolutely brilliant work. Looking forward to the Hilux build
Thanks for the sub! I look forward to getting the hilux back up to par and even better than ever!
1st & 2nd gen 4runners are just a different body on a hilux/pickup frame. All the parts should interchange.
That’s definitely not the case, the frames, steering systems and suspension are all completely different
Well done, good job. Waiting for the next video.
Coming soon!
👍
Finally an affordable truck!
I agree!
Trans fluid??
I thought about changing it but have had bad experiences changing old trans fluid, so for now I think I'm going to leave it.
@@redlineranch. hi ok just didn't see you check it, thanks good videos, keep them coming, from UK
Fix it don’t paint it, make sure you can charge your phone and a nice set of earbuds and you are good. I forgot does it have a defroster for the windshield? Great Video Thanks 🙏
Thanks for the support, I want to buff the paint to see how it looks, then fix up all the small things about it
Great content, nice truck, thanks buddy!
Thanks for watching! I appreciate the support
Loved the first episode. Hopefully this one too. Let’s goooo…..
I hope so too! Thanks for the support!
@@redlineranch.awesome episode man. You should keep it original and bring it back to the former glory. Good luck 👍
Nice lil trucky ...I got an 82 Hilux with automatic also . Been enjoying fixing on it over the last ten years
Right on that’s awesome! Have you seen my 1988 pickup build?
